LEAST FAVOURITE BOOKS I READ IN 2018

Hello awesome people and welcome back to another Saturday post.

Being an avid reader and a bookworm doesn’t mean that you always read amazing, heartbreaking, phenomenal, unique novels. Sometimes, it means that the book you pick up will end up being one of the worst books you ever read in your life.

Unfortunately, this year I read a total of 5 1-star-rated books and for that I am terribly sorry. Of course, it may seem like an indifferent number to those who read a gazillion books in 2018, but to me, who had a goal of 50 books, this means that 10% of the books I read where a complete disaster!

CHRISTMAS MOVIES’ RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THIS YEAR’S HOLIDAY SEASON

When the days are getting colder and the nights are getting longer, aside from reading a good book and drinking a nice, hot cup of coffee, there’s nothing better than drinking hot chocolate and watching movies. And not just any movies… But Christmas movies!

The Query Journey, Vol. 2

They say a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and they’re right about it. The exact same thing happens when it comes to pitching your manuscript to potential agents: the journey of a thousand rejections begins with the first submission.

Still, even if you get a gazillion rejection emails, there may be a fair few that will make this whole procedure worth it. Because three, maybe four agents will ask to read your full manuscript and you’ll finally realise that you didn’t waste your time working on a whole new story. You just haven’t found the right agent for your “baby” yet.

All you have to do is keep querying!

Hello awesome nerds and welcome to the second part of my query journey!

Over the past few months, I revised The Auras Chest, I polished and edited it as much and best as possible, and when I was finally happy with what I had, I started sending it to potential agents again.

After receiving more than 50 rejection emails, I had started deliberating whether TAC was good enough or not. My head kept screaming that if agents don’t want it, then it isn’t good enough. My heart though had a completely different opinion. And even though I was dealing with some serious reading slump and writer’s block, I started working on TAC‘s sequel again, the Creator of Divine Mysteries, and that’s when I realised how this story truly made me feel. It’s complete and utter bliss! It warms my heart and soul, and even if it takes years, I know that it’ll be published some day.

That’s when I got my third request to send the full manuscript of the Guardian of the Auras.

“THE AURAS’ CHEST: GUARDIAN OF THE AURAS sounds like an intriguing project and I would love to take a look. Please follow the instructions below to upload your complete manuscript. I look forward to reading it.”

I’m not getting my hopes up or anything, but it’s nice to know that there are people out there considering your work. It’s even better to have dedicated readers, because they’re the ones that motivate you to keep working, to keep writing, to keep dreaming.

Even some rejections are motivational. Like this one, for example:

“Hi Viktoria,
Thanks so much for reaching back out! You have a strong writing voice and I like the spirit of this story, but I’m having a tougher time selling fantasy projects, so I’m slowing my roll on signing projects that are distinctly fantasy, and therefore I have to pass on this. I really appreciated the chance to take a look, though! Feel free to query my colleague Britt, who acquires YA projects as well and trends toward fantastical genres.”

It’s all about honesty people. The fact that this particular agent was honest with me makes me happy and proud that I chose to send my work to her. And it brings her on the top of my list for future projects, especially Project Geek.

The most extraordinary thing though happened a few weeks ago.

I had submitted TAC to a Greek publishing house (we don’t have agents here in Greece) and after four months, I thought they had decided to pass. I’m glad I was wrong. They’re still considering my submission and they said that they’ll get back to me soon.

I also submitted the full manuscript to two more Greek publishing houses, so fingers crossed folks. Either it’ll get published here or it’ll be an international book. I’d be happy with either of these two outcomes.

I’m not saying that this whole process is easy. If I said that, I’d be lying to you. I’ve cried countless times already, I’ve questioned my writing skills more than you can imagine and I still wonder what would be the best option for me: to self-publish or to just wait and see what three agents and three publishing houses are going to say to me?

Of course, I can always self-publish and then, if someone decides to pick my project, I can publish it traditionally, as well.

What do you guys think? Would you be willing to read a story that goes as such…

“There’ll come a day when souls will ask how our Rondure was made.
So make sure that you learn by heart the Valiant Four’s parade.
At first, only the darkness ruled upon this island’s sky.
But then Ethereal fixed the sun, the moons and stars up high.
She blew the air and souls awoke, finally brought to life.
And so Barth’s earth was filled with laugh, prosperity and light.
Twins they might were, the youngest two, yet not at all the same.
For one was liquid, flowing free, the other one aflame.
Cordelia means “daughter of sea” yet she was its own mother.
The oceans, rivers, lakes and brooks claimed that they had none other.
For that was true, despite her twin; he turned the fields ablaze.
Volcanoes, fire, the core of earth, all these were Kai’s domains.
Those were the Four, those were the brave; Element and Protector.
Still, there was one, a Prodigal, a Humdrum souls’ collector.
She was Creator as well, a Guardian of some kind.
And that’s the story of the Auras’ chest, where mind and heart will bind.

Chapter 1
Nobody had said that hearts were wild creatures. They only used to say our ribs were cages. Cages that would protect this vital organ from the plague that used to rule upon the world. But in a land, where feelings had been banned for centuries now, two things were unforgivable. One, to have your judgement clouded, when up till yesterday, your place in the world was almost certain. And two, to let hearts melt, surrender to fierce emotions, because you were foolish enough in the first place, to unleash them once again.
There would be no forgiveness, no hope for me. For I had done both.”

I know I’ve shared the first rough drafts with you, but the final manuscript has changed drastically since then. Your opinion means the world to me, so I’d really like to know what you guys think.

Would a story like that make you feel excited?

It is because of you that I keep querying, because of my parents and Apo, that keep believing in me, and because it feels right in my heart.

So, if you guys wanna see more of that kind of updates, please do let me know in the comment section below. Also, do let me know if you’d like to read some of the final chapters of the Guardian of the Auras here on the blog.

Thank you all for being here once again and for reading my posts. It means the world to me and I want you to know that I most certainly don’t take your presence here for granted.

Love you all, wonderful creatures!

Till next time… Toodles! ❤
