R S Joby was the son of an LNER locomotive fireman who rose to top link work in the last days of steam on the Western Region.

He studied Geography and History at University College, London before taking his doctorate at Leicester University under Professor Dyos and David Williams.

He taught and lectured in Norfolk, gave Cambridge University Extramural lectures on railway topics and was also a tutor for the Open University.

He writes predominently on railway history, although also covering watweerways and airfields, and his books are definitive works on the aspects on which he writes.
