Tribes of Kai Pin-up – Work in Progress

Frank Cho Tribes of Kai, Daren Bader, Flesk Publications, pin-up art

We got hit with an unexpected snow storm on Valentine’s Day evening. I actually had to park in my neighbor’s driveway at the bottom of the hill since my van couldn’t make up the slippery hill and onto my driveway. Anyway, it’s a good weather to bundle up in the studio and get some work done.

I have several projects on my plate right right now. I’m jumping around a bit. Here’s one of the projects that I’m working on. Something completely different and fun. My tall skinny buddy, Daren Bader, has a new project out that he just finished and about to put out called Tribes of Kai. It’s about a tribe of cat-like people going to war against the tribe of reptile-looking people. The book’s being published by Flesk Publications this summer. I haven’t read it since it’s not completely lettered but it’s gorgeous. The entire book is painted in oil paint. (I think.) It’s moody and dynamic. And I simply can’t wait to read it.

Daren asked me if I can do a pin-up for his book which I jumped at the chance. Here’s the pin-up that I just sketched out. I’m gonna try to ink it this week when I have time to really focus on it. And I hope it’s half as good as Daren’s artwork in Tribes of Kai.

Liberty Meadows Sunday Strips Remastered

Frank Cho Liberty Meadows Sunday Strip Remastered

I’m in process of rescanning and recoloring my Liberty Meadows Sunday strips. Most of my old files were corrupted and lost. Now after a ceiling leak scare, I decided to rescan all my original Liberty Meadows Sunday strips before they are permanently lost.

I’ve hired the lovely and talented, Michelle Proust, to recolor all the Sunday strips. The good news is that at the rate we’re going, I should have the long awaited Liberty Meadows Sundays Collection Book 2 out by this fall. This book will collect the final two years of Liberty Meadows Sunday comic strips.

I’m on cover duty at Marvel Comics for the new Garth Ennis book, Phantom Eagle: Where Monsters Dwell. From the story synopsis that I’ve been given – Dinosaurs, Amazons, and WWI, it sounds like a hoot. I can wait to draw those amazons!

Skybourne Work-In-Progress

Frank Cho skybourne

Frank Cho: Skybourne. Interior page work in progress. Click to view full image

I can’t believe January is over and it’s Friday already. The days are zipping by. After many minor mishaps (leaky ceiling) and weather obstacles (multiple school closings due to snow), I finally managed to find some steady time to write and draw my creator-owned projects.

I’ve been jumping back and forth on “Skybourne” and “World of Payne” these last several days. I completely forgot how blissful it is when you’re completely focused on work and feel that sense of accomplishment. I’ve completely laid out issue #1 of Skybourne. Now I’m in process of refining my rough pencils and started inking some pages. (See above image.)

All in all, I’m producing and things are good. Everything is running smoothly for once in my studio. Let’s just hope the weather holds out.
