The girl appeared to float just above the ground as she crossed the lawn. Her rose-colored lips bowed in a reserved smile. As she drew closer, Valentins noticed her unusual eyes. At first, he supposed that the rufous shade was a trick of thelight, but the color remained constant when the battery-operated lantern shone directly on the girl's face.

Luisa and Parsifal were both children of military families. Luisa’s family was Latino, but her father was stationed in Italy when she was born. Parsifal jokingly called her the Hoe of Venice, to which Luisa responded, “it’s the Venetian Dreamboat, my Tennessee lamb,” in a Latin-tinged Southern accent while blowing the provocateur a kiss; the Tennessee lamb nickname both addressed Parsifal’s Southern roots and compared him to the lady of loose virtue in a humorous song by the band Little Feat.

“I ain’t scared of you, my little quesadilla,” Parsifal goaded, batting his eyes. Luisa threw a piece of seaweed at him.

“You like man-meat anyway, Pendejo,” Luisa retorted.

Today I'll be sharing a few sentences from the next chapter, All Hands on Deck. Just a tease, mind. This is a novelette, I don't want to give it all away!

Parsifal observed the fabled Dirty Dutchman through binoculars as van Donk and Valentyn Smolarek, a tall, slender, dark-haired, twenty-five-year-old Ukrainian man with striking navy-blue eyes, canoodled shamelessly on the deck of The Curious Elegance. The mature swain stroked his fingers over the younger man’s angular cheek and down his slender neck as he parted his conquest’s lips with his tongue.

“Oh, my stars, Girls, I swear the Amsterdam Hot Daddy might just be fixin’ to fuck the Ukrainian Stud Muffin right there on the deck of the Good Ship Lick My Lollipop,” Parsifal reported, his Tennessee accent lilting with excitement.

“Well, don’t keep it to yourself, Pendejo,” Luisa admonished. “Spill the frijoles!”

“I’m not even kidding, Louie. The old Silver Fox just squeezed a big ole dollop of suntan oil onto his hand and is rubbing it all over our boy Valentino’s gorgeous chest and abs. What I wouldn’t give to have my hands where his are!

WTF Blogger?

Just in case you were under the mistaken impression that Blogger had stopped being stupid, allow me to correct you. Blogger just went through and decided that an old story-planning blog I hadn't even posted to in several years violates community standards. I wasn't even my usual profane self in any of the posts on this blog. I'm now going through and setting any blogs I'm not currently actively using to private to avoid having this same nonsense happen to any of them.Just...what the hell?

SnippetDeborah Virgo and Valentins Hines met on the first day of summer 2017. The youngsters lived at the wrong end of Fox Avenue. The electricity had been turned off in Valentins's house, but he didn't mind sitting on the covered porch painting figurines. His mother, Doriend Hines, was gone most of the time, working at the Daily Grind Bistro or The Zealous Whistle Tavern or staying overnight with old folks who paid her under the table for her caregiving services. Doriend was a workaholic who would have been thriving monetarily if not for being a functional alcoholic and opioid addict with a love of gambling.
Valentins was sitting on the porch at dusk, painting a vampire figurine for his haunted house, when a wraithlike girl with an alabaster complexion and waves of xanthic hair flowing to her mid-back entered the gate.

That being said, let's get to our Q&A with Candi!

I love this image from Mystic Art Design! It portrays a wistful, maybe somewhat uncertain young woman, not a super-confident super-vixen with a bangin' Playboy model bod. Candi is the girl next door, not That Hottie Over There. She's the kind of gal who enjoys going dancing with her friends, but she isn't a chic club chick. Being raised in a rigid, religious family, she's looking for new experiences, but she isn't sure what shape those experiences will take.
That being said, let's learn a little about Candi in her own words. I suck at writing interview questions, so I used the Character Questionnaire from Reedsy and the random number generator linked below to choose what questions to ask. I always used to use Random.org, but the site has gone wonky.

1. If you could choose one, would you rather be more beautiful or more intelligent?
More intelligent. I think it would be worth more to the world if I had the intellectual ability to help solve important problems. There are plenty of attractive women out there already. Most of them aren't Hedy Lamarr. She's my heroine. She was beautiful, smart, brave, and talented.
2. How would your boss describe you?
Dependable, I think. I always show up when I'm expected to, usually 10 to 15 minutes early. I never come to work with a hangover, which I think really impresses Boris, considering that we work at a resort where there's always a party happening somewhere. Boris knows he can count on me, and he appreciates it.
3. What’s the worst thing you’ve ever wished on somebody (and who was it)?
There was a Russian family--the Bogomolovs--who became part of our church when I was 12 years old. They had a son, Ali, who was my age. I tried to be nice to him, but he was such a pious jerk! I suppose this is pretty immature of me, but since I don't believe in wishing death or lasting harm on people, the worst thing I could think of was to wish that Ali would crap his pants while he was up in front of the congregation playing Little Minister and fooling the adults with how devout he supposedly was. Most of the kids knew he was just awful.
4. Who was the last person to break your heart?
I've only had one romantic relationship before and I'm afraid I may be the one who did the heartbreaking. It depends on how much I meant to my high school boyfriend Henry. As I mention in the story, I think my parents were more in love with the idea of me marrying Henry than I was. I was relieved to get away from him. I think he would have been a controlling husband.
Just before I left to start my studies at Sunny Coast Hospitality College, I had to say goodbye to a lifelong friend, an old horse named Eddie. I rode Eddie nearly every weekend when I was growing up. Six weeks after I started school, Eddie's owner, Mr. Hjálmar, emailed me to let me know he had to put Eddie down. I couldn't stop crying. So, maybe the last person who broke my heart was Mr. Hjálmar, but he didn't mean to. He's a good man.
5. How would you respond to an apology from somebody you still can’t forgive?
When I was eleven years old, there was a youth group leader, Mr. Haran, who took me into one of the church offices. He grabbed my bottom and put his hand down my shirt. I never told anybody until a few of the other girls said he did the same thing to them. He moved away. I would tell him I hoped he was truly sorry for his actions and that I hoped he would never do anything like that to another young girl. I still have nightmares about him, about the way he looked and the way he smelled, and how sick the feeling of his hands and the words he said to me made me feel.
6. Have you ever done something illegal?
I put a pack of gum in my purse one time and walked out of the store with it. It was an absent-minded action rather than a deliberately illegal one. I had a lot on my mind with trying to finish my senior project before graduation. Once I realized what I'd done, I went back to the store and paid for the gum. My face was so red! I'd never be able to be a criminal. I have too much of a guilty conscience.
