Desperate to escape the pain of his brother’s death, Jesse Melnik ran—but he couldn’t outrun the grief, no matter how much distance he put between himself and his past. Now, after fifteen years of trying, he’s finally ready to face his hometown of Charlottetown again.
He expects the memories of his brother to hover in every corner of his family’s sailboat and whisper in every sea-tinged breeze.
What he doesn’t expect is Parker Willis, the best friend he left behind without a word the day he fled.
And he certainly doesn’t expect old feelings to resurface.
Parker’s been stuck in a rut since his father died three months ago. Every day is the same: try to keep his father’s dinner cruise business afloat so he can chip away at Dad’s debts, all while working a job that leaves him more frustrated than satisfied.
Then Parker’s routine shatters in the best way possible: Jesse Melnik returns to Prince Edward Island for the summer, all six feet three inches of gorgeous hockey player.
Now, that’s different.
Jesse kickstarts Parker’s heart.
Parker makes Jesse feel again.
And although both men are a little bit damaged from struggling down the broken path of loss, maybe—just maybe—if they can lean on each other, they’ll learn to move forward at last.
Content warnings: themes of grief, discussions of a parent's death from cancer, discussions/descriptions of a sibling's death from suicide

Jesse glanced over and nearly swallowed his tongue.
How dare running shorts be so goddamn tiny and cling so goddamn nicely to long, shapely legs dusted with hair the same shade as the finest dark chocolate? Jesse was still reeling at being in the same place at the same time as Parker for the first time in years—had, in fact, tossed and turned all night thinking about Parker—and now he showed up out of nowhere again and sent Jesse’s libido into a jumble of desire and yearning?
There were things that Jesse had left in his past, and his attraction to his best friend was supposed to be one of them.
Former best friend? Best friend he’d recently gotten reacquainted with? Former best friend who could be his new best friend?
Fuck. Relationships were hard.
Along with the shorts, Parker also wore a long-sleeved running shirt in teal and a baseball hat with Montreal hockey’s logo on the front. His dark hair curled out from underneath the sides of the hat, and the two-day stubble on his jaw was way sexier than Jesse wanted to admit. He was a couple of inches shorter than Jesse’s six foot three, but whereas Jesse was—admittedly—very big, even for a defenceman, Parker was lanky and toned, the muscle definition obvious in his running gear in a way it hadn’t been in the jeans and Willis Dinner Cruises-branded long-sleeved T-shirt he’d been wearing last night when he’d appeared like a figment of Jesse’s childhood wishes and sat next to him on the bench at the marina.
Whatever he wore, Parker looked like he’d fit into all of Jesse’s empty spaces.
Shaking his head to rid himself of that thought, he shoved his phone back in his pocket and scowled. “I’ll get you a new hat.”
Parker’s lips quirked. “I like this hat.”
“Since when are you a Montreal fan?”
“Hey, don’t knock them. They made it to the playoffs.”
The unlike you was left unsaid, but Jesse heard it loud and clear and refused to be amused.
“So.” Parker’s shoulder bumped up against his. “What are you doing?”
“What are you doing?”
“This is my jogging route.”
“That so?” Jesse would have to remember to be by his window in the mornings so he could watch Parker run by in his short shorts.
“Mm-hmm. Is it your jogging route?”
“No.”
“What are you doing here then?”
Glancing back at the house, Jesse let out a long breath. “Deciding what to tackle first. What colour would you paint that door?”
Parker blinked once and frowned. “Why would you paint it any colour?”
“Because that rusty red makes me think of dead bodies on a crime show?”
“No, I mean . . .” That unique greyish-greenish gaze of Parker’s swung from Jesse to the house and back. “Do you know the people who live here? Are you doing work for them this summer or something?”
“I live here,” Jesse said. “And I don’t want to live with that gross colour for the next two months.”
“You . . . bought a house?”
Jesse grunted.
“But you live in Vancouver,” Parker said slowly, as though reminding Jesse of this fact.
“No, I know, but . . .”
But what? He’d wanted a project for the summer? Something that would keep him occupied so he didn’t have to think about where he was and why he was back for the first time in fifteen years? A fixer-upper was as good a distraction as anything.
His therapist wouldn’t love that he was keeping busy instead of sitting with and analyzing his feelings. But she didn’t have to know. Right?
When Jesse didn’t continue, Parker said, “Are you retiring from hockey and moving back here?”
“Fuck no,” Jesse blurted.

But we’ve been together for eleven years now, and the older I get, the more I want our marriage to be real.
Salvation -- Since the day Yulia came to live with me, I’ve not once cheated on her. She’s legally my wife, and that’s all that matters. Besides, my daughter, Clover, has kept me busy. Now Clover’s nearly an adult and I’ve noticed the way Yulia looks at me when she thinks I’m not paying attention. But can we have a real marriage when we’ve been nothing but friends all these years? It’s too bad my family has be to taken before I realize the answer to that question. Now I’ll do whatever it takes to get Clover and Yulia back, and I’ll send their kidnappers straight to hell.

Yulia
The wind whipped my hair across my face, stinging my eyes as I stood at the edge of the school grounds. My heart pounded, each beat a reminder of the choice before me. Memories flashed through my mind -- cruel hands, mocking laughter, endless fear. I closed my eyes, willing the images away.
This was it. The end. My fingers trembled as I gripped the knife tighter. Just one cut and it would all be over. No more pain. No more shame. I took a shaky breath. “Prosti menya, sestra,” I whispered. Forgive me, sister.
The blade glinted in the fading sunlight. So sharp. So final. I pressed it to my wrist.
A roar split the air.
My eyes snapped open. In the distance, a motorcycle engine growled, growing louder. Closer. I hesitated, the knife hovering above my skin. Who would come here? Why now? The engine’s rumble filled my ears, drowning out the frantic beating of my heart. Despite myself, I turned toward the sound.
A flicker of… something. Not quite hope. But curiosity. A momentary distraction from the abyss. I lowered the knife, just slightly. My mind raced. Should I wait? See who it was? Or finish what I’d started?
The motorcycle drew nearer. Any moment now, it would crest the hill. I bit my lip, indecision paralyzing me. The wind continued to howl around me, urging me forward. But that sound… it called to me. Promising… what?
I didn’t know.
For just a moment, my despair lifted. And in that moment, I chose to wait.
The motorcycle crested the hill, its rider a dark silhouette against the blazing orange sky. My breath caught in my throat. He was massive, all broad shoulders and muscled limbs, his leather cut emblazoned with a patch I couldn’t quite make out.
He dismounted in one fluid motion, his boots hitting the ground with a heavy thud. My fingers tightened around the knife as he strode toward me, his pace urgent but measured. “Easy now, darlin’,” he called out, his voice a low rumble that carried on the wind. “Why don’t you put that knife down?”
I shook my head, taking a step back. “Stay away,” I warned. “I don’t know you.”
He slowed his approach, hands raised placatingly. “Name’s Hawk. I’m with the Reckless Kings. I was sent here to help. A few of my brothers are waiting nearby to make sure we don’t run into trouble.”
My mind reeled. The Reckless Kings? How did they know? Why would they care? “No one can help,” I whispered, more to myself than to him. “It’s too late.”
Hawk took another careful step forward. “It’s never too late, sweetheart. Trust me on that.”
I laughed, a bitter sound that surprised even me. “Trust? I don’t even know what that means anymore.”
His gaze met mine. “Then let me show you. Just… put the knife down. Please.”
My hand trembled. Part of me wanted to believe him, to grasp at this lifeline he was offering. But the fear, the pain of the past years, it all threatened to drown me. “I can’t,” I choked out. “You don’t understand what he did to me.”
Hawk’s expression softened. “Maybe not exactly. But I’ve seen enough pain in this world to recognize it. You’re not alone, Yulia. Not anymore.”
My name on his lips startled me. How did he know? Who sent him?
As if sensing my thoughts, he added, “Your sister’s worried sick. She asked us to find you.”
Tears welled in my eyes. “Oksana?”
Hawk nodded. “She loves you. Let us help. Let me take you somewhere safe.”
The knife slipped in my grasp, my resolve wavering… The knife clattered to the ground, and my legs gave out. I crumpled, expecting to hit the cold earth. Instead, strong arms caught me, steadying me against a broad chest.
“I’ve got you,” Hawk murmured, his voice a low rumble. “You’re safe now.”
I trembled, my body wracked with silent sobs. Years of pent-up fear and pain poured out of me as Hawk held me, his grip firm but gentle. “Can you walk?” he asked after a moment.
I nodded weakly, not trusting my voice. Hawk kept an arm around me as he guided me toward his motorcycle. The machine loomed before us, all gleaming chrome and sleek lines. “Ever ridden before?” Hawk asked, swinging his leg over the seat.
I shook my head, eyeing the bike warily. “Nyet… no.”
He extended his hand. “First time for everything. Hold on tight, okay?”
With shaking fingers, I grasped his hand and climbed on behind him. The leather of his cut was smooth under my palms as I wrapped my arms around his waist. I heard three more motorcycles and noticed the men were also from the Reckless Kings.
“Ready?” Hawk called over his shoulder.
“Da,” I whispered, tightening my grip.
The engine roared to life, vibrating through my entire body. We took off, the world blurring around us as we sped away from the school grounds. Away from my nightmares.
I pressed my face against Hawk’s back, the wind whipping my hair. Part of me still couldn’t believe this was real. That I was escaping. That someone had come for me. “Where are we going?” I shouted over the engine’s rumble.
“Somewhere safe,” Hawk called back. “Our compound. You’ll be protected there.”
Protected. The word sent a shiver through me -- of fear or hope, I wasn’t sure.
As we rode into the gathering darkness, I clung to Hawk, to this stranger who’d become my unexpected savior. My mind raced with questions, with doubts. But for now, I let the roar of the engine drown out my thoughts, focusing only on the road ahead and the promise of safety it held.
Tears stung my eyes, instantly whisked away by the biting wind. My chest ached with each ragged breath, emotions churning like a storm inside me. Gratitude and terror warred for dominance.
“You okay back there?” Hawk’s voice barely reached me over the engine’s roar.
I nodded against his back, not trusting my voice. My fingers dug into the leather of his cut, anchoring me to this surreal moment.

A Sean McPherson Novel, Book 5
Mystery/Thriller/Private InvestigatorDate Published: 04-15-2025Publisher: SparkPress

A contemporary crime thriller perfect for Louise Penny and Robert Dugoni fans, Illusionist presents PI McPherson with an impossible dilemma: kill an author at a writing retreat in the Pacific Northwest, or let a college student die.
When an illusionist arrives at Pines & Quill, one of the retreat’s owners vanishes—right in front of witnesses who see nothing. Meanwhile, crime boss Georgio Gambino tightens his grip, blackmailing a writer into murder and framing Sean McPherson. His threat is clear: obey, or your daughter dies.
As McPherson investigates, he uncovers a brewing power struggle—Carmine Fiore, Gambino’s second-in-command, is staging a coup. While Gambino’s network traffics drugs, weapons, and humans, Fiore manipulates the Sureños gang, planting evidence to shift blame.
Desperate to turn the tide, McPherson seeks a dangerous alliance. But when deception is the game, only illusion can outmaneuver the truth. Enlisting the retreat’s eclectic writers—including a NASCAR driver, a triathlete, a house-flipping architect, and a magician with secrets of her own—McPherson sets the stage for the ultimate trick: survival.

Chapter OneSUMMER
“Hubba, hubba.”
Summer Hastings glanced over at her new teammate, Kendra Miller, and rolled her eyes. “Girl,” she said with a droll expression, dabbing her face with one of the cooling towels on the break station by the side of the track. “You can’t ‘hubba, hubba’ every new guy you see.”
Kendra, ebony skin aglow under the late afternoon sun, reached for a bottle of water. “Why not?” she asked, screwing off the cap before chugging half the bottle in one long, sensual swallow.
“I dunno.” Summer didn’t really have a reason for her admonition; she was just tired of hearing Kendra fawn over every male she came into eye contact with. “It starts to lose its meaning after a while, I suppose.”
Kendra paused, nodding at the latest “hubba, hubba” recipient in question, none other than their cross-country coach, Dawson Billings. “Not to me it doesn’t,” she snorted, tossing her empty water bottle in the recycling bin beside the break table.
Summer followed her friend’s gaze to their coach, a fit, lean, rigid slice of man with salt-and-pepper curls, a barrel chest, and three-day stubble who looked to be in his early to mid-forties. She shrugged and trailed after Kendra, who’d jogged off for another cool down lap as their practice wound down for the day.
“Maybe you should have a ratings system,” Summer huffed playfully, nudging Kendra as they ran together. “You know, Hubba-Hubba Level One and Level Two or something.”
Kendra frowned, sinewy arms pumping as they loped around the smooth, red clay colored track, side by side and stride by stride. “Is two higher or lower than one on this rating system of yours?”
Summer chuckled, rushing along behind a series of other runners on the cross-country team, most of them upperclassmen returning from the previous year. As two of the only six incoming freshman, Summer and Kendra had quickly bonded during Welcome Week, a ten-day kind of “soft opening” to the fall semester at small but exclusive Haversham University in quaint and picturesque Briar Ridge, Tennessee.
“I feel like one would be the hottest rating, like Defcon Hubba-Hubba, and ten would be the lowest, like…Ho Hum Hubba-Hubba.”
Kendra nodded like she was actually considering the notion, soft black stubble atop her head glistening in the shimmering prelude to twilight that smothered the little valley they were in with a most flattering auburn glow. “But isn’t a hot guy considered a ten, so…”
Summer grew distracted, motion out of the corner of her eye signaling a “hubba, hubba” of her own as a smooth, sexy siren inched closer to their coach on soft, silken legs so smooth they glowed in the late afternoon sunlight. “Or a woman…” she said so softly she doubted Kendra heard over the slapping of their high-tech running shoes on the even higher tech track surface.
She struggled to ignore the newcomer as they rounded the track for another pass past their coach and the sultry, auburn-haired beauty by his side. But she wasn’t the only one to notice. “Who’s this now?” Kendra huffed as they approached, watching their coach and the sexy newcomer chuckle over something on a clipboard she was showing him.
Summer snorted at her overdramatic friend. “Guess you’re not the only one who thinks Coach is Hubba-Hubba Defcon One, Kendra.”
“Witch,” Kendra puffed as they cruised by, careful to avert their eyes less their ire—or, in Summer’s case, desire—be noticed by the feather-ruffling newcomer and her snicker-inducing clipboard.
Summer smiled secretly to herself, glancing up just as they passed to notice the sexy ginger look up as well. Their eyes locked for a moment, maybe less, and Summer felt the thrill of allure as their gaze lingered that one second longer than perhaps it should have, given the circumstances.
It was Summer who broke it first, looking down at her shoes and nearly stumbling as she struggled to keep up with Kendra, who had pulled a few paces ahead. “We’re supposed to be cooling down, remember?” She forced herself not to glance back at the sidelines.
“Sorry,” Kendra chuckled, slowing her roll and letting Summer catch up. “Little Miss Pigtails got me all heated over here!”
Summer nodded for very different reasons. “Same, girl,” she muttered, the soft, vaguely yearning sound of her voice drowned out by the gentle slapping of rubber soles on track coating beneath them. “Same.”PurchaseNineStar Press | Books2Read

About the Author

It’s never too late to make my dreams come true. I was lucky to be born on the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, specifically in Alexandria. My summers were spent on the beach, enjoying the sunshine, the original surfboards/paddle boards, and the game of sand pickleball before it even made it to the US.
Not having TVs, I read many books, especially wartime ones, Ian Flemings’s early James Bond novels, John Le Carre, Agatha Christie, Maurice LeBlanc (Arsene Lupin), and other detective/mystery-type books. For school, we had to read all the French Classics. I was always intrigued by how the characters always managed to resolve their problems.
At the Age of 19, I came to California as a foreign student. After graduating with an engineering degree, I was able to obtain my permanent residency. I never looked back. My mother was able to join me, but unfortunately, my father passed away.
Once I graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree, I joined an International Engineering and Construction Company and spent all my working time with them. What was great is that the company moved me to many work projects around the world, where I spent an average of a couple of years on each. My wife joined me on some of these assignments.
But my love for writing was always with me. During my stay abroad, I wrote a philosophical book and many articles for local newspapers and the Laguna Beach weekly issues, comparing life in Laguna Beach with life in Indonesia. I wrote articles for the company’s monthly newsletter, as well as for other publications.
I recently decided to use a “nom de plume”/pseudonym for my writings. My real name is Jean-Pierre Zacaropoulos. Having a last name starting with a “Z” had me called upon in classes either as one of the last ones or one of the first one. It was always a guessing game. But usually having an A or B will push you to the top (Ha! Ha!). So I decided to choose a “B”
Now, I have a little bit more time, so I decided to make my long-time desire come true. I wrote my mystery/romance novel, which will be followed shortly after by a sequel.

18th - 24th - What is your opinion on modern artists' interpretations of deceased authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Louisa May Alcott, Charles Dickens, and Jane Austen? Do you think these interpretations represent the authors correctly, or do they disrespect the authors? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)It depends on the author. I believe most authors treat such story inspirations with respect. For instance, I reviewed a book called Humbug last December. Here is the book's blurb.
Blurb
A Christmas Carol shows us one terrible day in Ebenezer Scrooge’s life, but have you ever wondered what came before his fateful encounter with the ghosts of Christmas time? What happened to turn him into the scowling, penny-pinching old man we think we know so well?
There is so much more to this character—possibly more than Charles Dickens himself could ever have imagined.
Scrooge has compelling reasons for hating Christmas, for rejecting his fiancée and his precious nephew, and for employing Tiny Tim’s father, despite his obvious incompetence. He is a doting uncle, beloved brother, successful businessman, and passionate lover, but a dark secret puts both him and his loved ones at risk. Scrooge struggles to embrace his true self and live in defiance of the Victorian era’s repressive moral standards. Soul-crushing losses and his own destructive choices shape his fate into a twisted path of sorrow, frustration, and uncertainty—but also happiness, fulfillment, and love.
Scrooge’s own words sum it up best: “How delightfully queer life is.”
https://ornerybookemporium.blogspot.com/2024/12/humbug-audiobook-review.html
Some people might take exception to an author interpreting a well-known character from a classic story like A Christmas Carol as bisexual or gay, but I don't think that is the case. I believe the story treated Scrooge respectfully while offering a plausible explanation for his bitterness. I gave the book a five-star rating.

Zane Carter and his sons, eleven-year-old Ty and thirteen-year-old Joseph, venture one hundred miles into the Idaho wilderness with only a knife and the knowledge of their Nez Perce ancestors. Danger awaits at every deadfall and lurks in every snowy shadow as the boys hunt, fish, make weapons, and build shelter, learning to survive, taking only what they need from the land, and leaving no trace.
During their eighteen-day journey, Zane’s determination to fulfill a promise to his grandfather, an Indigenous warrior who exemplified the tenets of a wise and spiritual existence, is thwarted by a fatal encounter that transports Zane into an ancient realm as he straddles the thin line between life and death.
He wonders what has become of his boys. Have they learned enough patience, resourcefulness, and courage to complete this rite of passage? Will they make it out of the wildlands alive? Or will the unforgiving forces of the natural world take them too far from home to ever return?

Once Upon a Blue Moon Book Blitz #rabtbooktours

Paranormal Romance/Mystery
Date Published: July 1, 2025
Hazel Thornton is a small-town witch with a knack for brewing potions, botching spells, and annoying her grumpy werewolf neighbor, Blake Carter. But when a magical mishap leaves them trapped in each other’s bodies, they’re forced to work together—awkwardly, sarcastically, and very much against their will.
To make matters worse, Moonridge is on edge. Wolves are acting strange. Magic is going haywire. And beneath Hazel’s apothecary, something old and dangerous is waking up. As Hazel and Blake stumble through spellwork, supernatural politics, and a suspiciously perfect wellness guru with a shady agenda, one thing becomes clear: this body swap isn’t their biggest problem.
As Hazel and Blake race to reverse the spell, they uncover secrets that could tear the town apart. But the deeper they dive into the mystery, the more they realize their biggest problem might not be magic... it might be how much they’re falling for each other.
Though she’s been quietly writing for years (mostly through anonymous fanfic and enthusiastic encouragement for other writers) this marks her first official foray into paranormal-romance-mysteries. (ParaRoMystery?) It was the quiet days of the COVID pandemic, the persistent voices of the Moonridge characters in her head, and the gentle (okay, sometimes pushy) insistence of family and friends that nudged her toward publishing.
Avery lives in the northern U.S., where it’s cold more often than not, with two opinionated dogs, and a significant other who is equal parts grumpy and lovely. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her watching trashy reality TV or reading with a blanket, a cup of coffee, and at least one pet trying to prove that they are more interesting than her book.
