Chainsaw Operations with Team Rubicon Disaster Response
For the last week, I’ve been deployed to New Bern, North Carolina with Team Rubicon to help Hurricane Florence survivors clean up. Florence isn’t in the news anymore, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.
I had the great fortune to work with an outstanding, fun group of sawyers to remove hazard trees. Many of the trees we removed were on properties owned by military veterans or elderly people without the ability to do the work themselves. One veteran was a five-time Purple Heart recipient and the sweetest gentleman ever. I was truly honored to meet him and his veteran neighbor.
Since Team Rubicon doesn’t do disaster tourism and there’s plenty of devastation pictures out there, I’ll just share pictures of our Forward Operating Base, my Strike Team Bravo and some of the great work we did. Want to help out? Sign up for Team Rubicon, donate if you can, or spread the word. We’re still doing cleanup in North Carolina, Flordia and we’re headed to the Mariana Islands for medical relief.

And a quote about a wonderful Montana hike by yours truly!

Winter Is Coming
GoT reference? No.
Winter in Montana reference. We’ve changed the furnace filter, pulled the hoses off the outside faucets, and today, we burned slash.
The Amazing Sleeping Man prefers to call it “Praying to the Snow Gods” and I prefer a more practical approach.
No matter what, winter is coming. The mornings are below 32 degrees F, frost is heavy, and all the leaves are turning. In Montana, that means not only the aspens and birch, but the larch too. Larch (aka tamarack) is a deciduous conifer–a fir-like tree that loses it needles every fall. This group is in our back yard. Enjoy!

Hiking the Bear Creek Overlook
The Amazing Sleeping Man had a tough week at work, but he still wanted to go hiking this week. So, I picked the Bear Creek Overlook. We hike Bear Creek itself a couple of times a year, but we’ve never done the overlook.
That was a mistake–it’s beautiful! Especially in fall, when the larch are starting to turn. Even with a little snow.
It’s longer than the Blodgett Overlook trail, but still an easy, pleasant hike. It’s also in the trees most of the way, so you could hike it even in the height of summer. It’s 2.5 miles long, with a 1200 ft elevation gain, and a nice wide tread on long switchbacks.
This is a popular trail, with very little parking at the trailhead, and the hardest part is driving there–the road is very narrow and rocky in parts.
But the end result is well worth it!

Video Couldn’t Kill This Radio Star!
The radio star in question, Steve Fullerton, interviewed yours truly, for the AM 1240 KLYQ Local Events Radio Show, airing tomorrow at 8:00 am Mountain Time! And always available on the net, of course.
We talk about my writing process, how I came up with the idea for Lightwave: Clocker, and my upcoming appearance at Chapter One Book Store. I’ll be reading and answering questions at Chapter One on Oct 12th, at 7:00 pm.
Tell me what you want to hear:
The beginning of Lightwave: Shooting Star, Folding Space Series 3.0, or
A prequel short story about Saree, or
A prequel short story from the ancient past in the Folding Space Universe (slightly creepy for Halloween
!)I am ridiculously excited about this appearance, and I had a ton of fun talking to Steve for the radio show. I hope to see you at Chapter One!

Fall Hiking – Blodgett Canyon Overlook
Fall in the Bitterroot Mountains is magical. The colors are bright and beautiful, the temperatures are perfect for hiking, and the crowds are gone. Not that it’s ever that crowded here, but it’s even better now.
We hiked the Blodgett Canyon Overlook trail on Tuesday. It’s a mere 1.5 miles and 400-foot elevation gain, with a wide, well-maintained trail; a quick, easy jaunt. The destination is worth far more effort–Blodgett Canyon is gorgeous, especially with fall decorating the slopes. Enjoy!

Not your usual ghost story – Kayelle Allen’s Lights Out #SpaceOpera #SciFi
If you knew this was your last day to live, what would you do? Would you face the end with a clear conscience? Would you fight for one more day?
Look for that person you wronged and make it right? Run away? Turn and fight? What would you do?
In Lights Out by Kayelle Allen, the hero knows his end is near. Instead of running, Tornahdo makes a choice. He will face death with a clear conscience and the knowledge that his death will serve mankind. He will join…
GHOST CORPS
He can save mankind. After he does one important thing. Die.
Join the Ghost Corps, they said. You’ll live forever, they said. You’ll save mankind, they said. They didn’t say that to do it, first he had to die.
When Tornahdo signs on the dotted line, he puts his life into the steady hands of the mighty Ghost Corps. Three grisly deaths and three agonizing resurrections later, he’s assigned duty on Enderium Six.
He’s facing his most dangerous mission yet, the very reason the corps exists.
Do they expect him to win? Fat chance. Tornahdo and his team are already dead and this mission is codenamed “Lights Out.” No, there’s more to this than he can see.
To discover the truth, he must face an unbeatable, unkillable enemy, and this time–somehow–find a way to keep himself alive…
Excerpt, Lights Out by Kayelle Allen
The air reeked of antiseptic and starch stiffened the pillowcase. If only the mind-numbing jabbering would stop.
Tornahdo pried open his eyes. The flattened blood bag above him, stenciled equipment and gray walls screamed military hospital.
He’d died. Again.
Spanish curses slipped out. His abuela would’ve taken a switch to him. He made the sign of the cross and kissed his fingertips.
After yanking the tube out of his arm, he pressed a thumb over the entry point. Thankfully, this time, he wasn’t writhing on the floor in agony. Well, not yet.
A faceless android in a Ghost Corps uniform loomed over a bank of equipment displaying Tornahdo’s name and vitals. First impression was right. Military hospital.
The weapons-grade yapping continued.
“Did you hear?” a youthful voice bragged. “He killed six of ’em last night.”
“Yeah, but they don’t stay dead. They never do.”
“If Ultras didn’t come back to life, their plasma wouldn’t bring our own people back.”
The transfusion of enemy blood healed the hole in Tornahdo’s arm in seconds. He thumbed off the red smear and rolled over on the gurney.
An open door led to a sink and toilet built to let gravity do its work. Which meant this was a planet. You hadn’t lived until you were in space, floating in zero gravity while your body’s final twitches sent your corpse spinning.
Notices on the wall confirmed this was San Xavier in the Colonies of Man. Same place he’d bought it the first time.
This was getting old.
