Happy Valentine’s Day
In this pandemic year, amorous propensities may not be running high, and the ability to deliver romantic tchotkes is diminished. But I think Valentine’s Day is sweet. The world could always use more love.
I’d like to dedicate this heart-on-a-light-box to my sweetheart, Phyllis.

Valentine’s Day is something of an ersatz holiday, with made-to-order Hallmark cards, chocolate, and roses. The historical origins are murky, to say the least: there were several martyrs named “Valentine” slaughtered by Roman authorities that the Catholic church elevated to sainthood. Also Roman: the festival of Lupercalia, roughly February 13 – February 15. This extended party involved animal sacrifice, drinking, sex, and flagellation. Pretty far from today’s canonical ‘Hallmark’ holiday!
In the 5th Century A.D., Pope Gelasius I probably laid the foundations for the modern holiday by combining commemoration for the martyrs (St. Valentine’s Day) with the old pagan holiday of Lupercalia.
To Hades with historical origins! Let’s love each other, and enjoy Valentine’s Day!

Monochromatic Visions Portfolio
We’re pleased to be able to offer my Monochromatic Visions Portfolio at a still fairly affordable price ($1200). There are only two portfolios left at this price.

Fruits and Vegetables on the Light Box Webinar Saturday February 13
What can you photograph on a light box? It turns out: just about anything that is translucent. In particular, early in the pandemic year Harold had fun experimenting with fruits and vegetables on the light box at the behest of an art director.
In this webinar premiere (there’s a first time for everything!) Harold & Phyllis will show some of Harold’s fruit and vegetable work, explain the tools they use, show aspects of fruit and vegetable composition, and process some of these images in real time so you can watch. As always, there will be plenty of time for you to ask questions that Harold & Phyllis will do their best to answer.

Pandemic Print Pricing Offer Still Applies
I’d like to remind potential print collectors that we are still offering a “pandemic” print special (please click the link for the details of our specially-priced offer). I am optimistic and hopeful that widespread vaccination will end the pandemic this spring. Returning to a new normal will mean an end to our pandemic print special. So if collecting one of my prints at a very special price interests you, please don’t delay!
During the pandemic, it has been great to be able to put my work in tangible form in the hands of collectors at an affordable price, and great when I hear from a discerning print recipient (as I did the other day): “Thanks Harold for the print. It is deliciously delicate and I love it!” Another collector writes “[Our print is] so beautiful and we will enjoy it in our home. We knew it would be wonderful, but this far exceeds what we imagined.”
It is worth pointing out that pandemic print special applies to almost all of my images. The choice of image is yours, and I will try to match the image with the best paper to make the most graceful and beautiful print possible!
