Wandering about Thimphu today and stopped off at a divey little place for a traditional meal. That's the fiery chilli, cheese and beef curry, some daal from Southern Bhutan and salad. The owner put us on Skype to talk to all his various relatives. #bhutan #traveldiary #mountainechoes

Traditional dancing during the tea break. There were these two guys wandering about wearing masks and carrying giant wooden phalluses. One strolled next to me as I tried to get a WiFi signal and said "hi dear" holding out his, um, PROP. he went away after I tried and failed to take a selfie. Me with my smoking permit, allowing me to carry cigarettes into the country. I knoooow and I have totally quit, except like, sometimes when I haven't. New art project. When I'm watching TV or have some down time, I doodle in a little blank book I keep on my desk. Mostly I draw pen and ink portraits of people like these ones. Yesterday, I cut around one with scissors and it looked pretty good so I decided to do more and put them up on this wall by the front door as they emerge. My first book launch was eight years ago this week. We invited everyone, like it was a wedding or something. I remember the fancy invites (still have one on display!) and the special drinks that Agni at the Park made for the occasion and smiling till my face hurt and then after, how my friends and I went to the pool behind Agni and stood in the water laughing.
