An office switcheroo to help salvage pandemic productivity

I haven’t posted at all since the pandemic began. Like most of us, I have complicated feelings about many things. However, I’ll jump back in with something lighter: how I’ve adapted my physical workspace to our new life.

2020 goals (I should set them even if I forget them 😏)

A couple weeks ago I wrote about setting goals as an indie. We lack external accountability to set goals at all, let alone make them happen. This can leave us feeling hopeful at the beginning of the year and downtrodden at the end. I’ve been to this rodeo enough times to feel this keenly during New Year’s resolution season.

On the bright side, indies can ditch useless metrics. We don’t need to check boxes to demonstrate someone else’s idea of progress. Last year I met most of my goals without mu...

How much should I care about setting goals for my business?

How would I look if I said “I never set goals for my work?”

That’s not strictly true, but I have shied away from quantitative goals over the past several years. I used to set specific targets for every possible metric: social media followers, pageviews, blog posts per week. For my fiction work I set goals to finish a current manuscript or hit a target word count on a new one. I rarely met these goals and when I didn’t, I felt bad about myself.
