Wisdom Wednesday: C. Kevin Thompson
Do you have a method for keeping track of your writing ideas? And if so, how do you know which story idea to pursue next? Our guest today is author C. Kevin Thomson.
Welcome, Kevin!
Name: C. Kevin Thompson
Genre: Speculative Fiction, Mysteries, and Thrillers
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Latest Novel: The Letters
Writing Tip:
When coming up with ideas for books to write, keep a cheap, spiral-bound notebook handy and on one page, jot down a tentative title, some possible protagonist’s names, and a quick synopsis of the story that came to mind. Try to keep the information to one page. Don’t drone on about it. Be as succinct as possible, but give enough info so that when you look at it later, you’ll remember the idea.
Then, let it sit and simmer for a while. As more ideas come to mind, jot those down too. If you don’t, you’ll forget them, and they may never come back.
When you’re ready to start a new novel or non-fiction work, peruse your idea book and see what jumps off the page, begging you to write it next. And don’t be surprised it two or more ideas raise their hands and say, “We’ve been talking, and we think if you work it right, you could incorporate all three of us into a more intricate, deeper work.” Sometimes, it’s the combination of ideas that turn out to be the best.
Writing Tip for New Writers:
The writing life—the one that looks soooo glamorous as it is portrayed in movies and TV shows—is really a hard life. It’s not an easy market to break into these days, and it can be daunting. This world of writing and publishing has also changed so much in the last ten years. Therefore, learn the craft (i.e., learn how to write well), be patient (nothing in this industry happens overnight), write what you can live with. Why? Because if you don’t, you may end up being a very miserable but rich author. One who wants to write in another genre but can’t because his or her publisher is saying it’s against the religion of “platforms.” At that point, you’re left with “jumping ship” and leaving your publisher (and your major source of income) or “jumping off a cliff,” because if you have to write one more _______________ (fill in the genre blank here), you’d rather take a long walk off a short pier.
I exaggerated a little on that last choice, but you get my drift. Go into this writing life for the long haul.

THE WORLD IS A CRAZY PLACE
WHEN THE LIVING ARE DEAD
AND THE DEAD ARE ALIVE.
Rachel Hamar—a Manhattan bank teller—lives nothing close to a Manhattan lifestyle. Residing in Washington Heights, NY, the only thing keeping her in The Big Apple is her mother—a long-time patient in a local psychiatric hospital. It’s December, 2014, and the twentieth anniversary of her high school sweetheart’s tragic death. She’s not sure how much more heartache she can endure, especially after being told earlier in the day she no longer has a job at the bank. A casualty of downsizing.
In the midst of spiraling depression, Rachel receives a mysterious letter in the mail. When she opens it, she becomes cautious and skeptical of its contents and discards it as a mistake, concluding it’s simply addressed incorrectly or a postal worker’s faux pas in the midst of a busy Christmas season. But another letter arrives the next day. And another the day after that. Before long, she is in possession of several letters. Each one more puzzling than the last.
Thinking that someone may be playing a cruel game, she contacts the police, and this propels Rachel and the two detectives into one of the most bizarre cases they’ve ever encountered. Is it a friend’s cruel joke? Is it some stalker’s perverse idea of manipulation? Or is it something more?
Working together, the pair discovers an unusual business card among Ms. O’Connor’s family belongings that leads them on a journey to China. There, the women embark on an adventure of faith and self-discovery as they uncover secrets, truths, and ultimately, God’s perfectly arranged plans.

C. KEVIN THOMPSON is a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a kid at heart. Often referred to as “crazy” by his grandchildren, it’s only because he is. He’s a writer. Need he say more?
The second edition of his award-winning debut novel, The Serpent’s Grasp, is now available! The first four books of his Blake Meyer Thriller series are scheduled for re-release in the spring of 2022, with the heart-pounding conclusion of Books 5 and 6 to join the series in the summer of 2022! And, his newest standalone novel, The Letters, winner of the 2021 Selah Award in the Speculative Fiction category is now available in both e-book and paperback!
Kevin is a huge fan of the TV series 24, The Blacklist, Blue Bloods, NCIS, Criminal Minds, BBC shows Broadchurch, Shetland, Hinterland, and Wallander, loves anything to do with Star Trek, and is a Sherlock Holmes fanatic too. But you will never catch him wearing a deerstalker. Ever.

Wisdom Wednesday: Liana George
Welcome back to Wisdom Wednesday! I don’t know about you, but I love getting the chance to get to know other authors and to get a mid-week boost with writing tips. Today, we have author, Liana George.
Welcome Liana!
Name: Liana George
Genre: Contemporary Christian Women’s Fiction
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Latest Novel: Perfectly Arranged (The Hopeful Hearts Series, Book 1)
Writing Tip:
Don’t wait for perfect conditions to occur before you sit down to write! Whether it’s waiting for inspiration, an organized/clean house, a certain level of education, or the kids to be grown and out of the house before you start writing, if you wait for those “perfect conditions”, you could be waiting a long time. Look for ways to work in spite of those things. Otherwise, you’ll never get any writing done! (Ecclesiastes 11:4)
Writing Tip for New Writers:
Learn as much as you can! Whether it’s hiring a writing coach to guide you on the process, attending writing conferences, or reading lots of craft books, constantly look for ways to strengthen your writing muscle! It will serve you well.

Can Nicki risk letting go of her well-ordered life plans and embrace what God has perfectly arranged?
Short on clients and money, professional organizer Nicki Mayfield is hanging up her label maker. That is until the eccentric socialite Katherine O’Connor offers Nicki one last job.
Working together, the pair discovers an unusual business card among Ms. O’Connor’s family belongings that leads them on a journey to China. There, the women embark on an adventure of faith and self-discovery as they uncover secrets, truths, and ultimately, God’s perfectly arranged plans.

As a multipotentialite, Liana Georges has many interests and creative pursuits. She claims that’s why it took her so long into adulthood to become a fiction author and get her first book, Perfectly Arranged, published. Yet if it weren’t for the diverse adventures she’s experienced on the journey – from being an ex-pat in China and Germany to restoring order in people’s homes and lives – she knows she wouldn’t have any stories to tell.
Married to her college sweetheart, Clint, she has two adult daughters and lives on a small farm on the outskirts of Houston. When she’s not scribbling away she enjoys watching tennis, reading from her large TBR pile, or planning her next vacation.

Wisdom Wednesday: Susan Page Davis
Hello everyone!
I love having authors on my blog for Wisdom Wednesday, but this one is extra special. Susan Page Davis is not only a wonderful author, but she’s also a great friend. We co-lead a local writing group, and she is also a fellow Scrivenings Press author, and I had the honor of editing her newest release!
Welcome Susan!
Name: Susan Page Davis
Genre: Mystery
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Latest Novel: Ice Cold Blue (True Blue Mysteries, Book 2)
Writing Tip:
I make a three-ring binder for each book series or standalone novel. In it I put my contract, synopsis, important research materials, and anything else I accumulate while writing the book—sometimes that’s a map or a floor plan, or maybe it’s a calendar for the year the book is set in (from timeanddate.com).
Writing Tip for New Writers:
Don’t be afraid to let someone with more experience read your work. Read widely, not just in the genre you are writing, and try to write something every day.

Campbell McBride is now working for her father Bill as a private investigator in Murray, Kentucky. Xina Harrison wants them to find out what is going on with her aunt, Katherine Taylor. Katherine is a rich, reclusive author, and she has resisted letting Xina visit her for several years. Xina arrived unannounced, and Katherine was upset and didn’t want to let her in. When Xina did gain entry, she learned Katherine fired her longtime housekeeper. She noticed that a few family heirlooms previously on display have disappeared. Xina is afraid someone is stealing from her aunt or influencing her to give them her money and valuables. True Blue accepts the case, and the investigators follow a twisting path to the truth.

Susan Page Davis is the author of more than ninety novels and novellas. Her work has won several awards, including the Carol Award, two Will Rogers Medallions, and two Faith, Hope, & Love Reader’s Choice Awards. A Maine native, she now lives in Western Kentucky with her husband, Jim. They are the parents of six grown children and have eleven grandchildren.

Wisdom Wednesday: Deborah Sprinkle
Hello everyone!
I just got back from a Writing Retreat, so today is the perfect time for another Wisdom Wednesday. Today we have author Deborah Sprinkle joining us.
Welcome Deborah!
Name: Deborah Sprinkle
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Latest Novel: Silence Can Be Deadly
Writing Tip:
There are so many that come to mind, but if I have to choose just one thing to emphasize, it would be to bait your hook with an irresistible first line and paragraph. By that I mean set the hook with your very first words or your readers will spit it out.
I think this is my favorite writing tip because crafting a truly great first line takes effort and skill. Most writers I know will rework the opening line and paragraph over and over trying to get it just right.
And when they do, it’s a thing of beauty.
Writing Tip for New Writers:
My advice for new writers is this:
Learn the craft.Be humble but persistent.Grow a thick skin.Relationships are important. Give as much as you take.

Forced from the career he loved and into driving a taxi, Peter Grace had grown accustomed to his simple life. Until one night when a suspicious fare and a traffic jam blew it all apart, and he was on the run again. Only this time it wasn’t a matter of changing occupations but of life and death.
He needed help and he knew where to find it. His old friend Rafe in Pleasant Valley. What he didn’t count on was finding not only the help he needed but a community of new friends and the love of his life. Zoe Poole.
The story of Captain Nate Zuberi and his wife Madison continues as they too risk their lives to help Peter. Along with Peter, Rafe, and Zoe, they strive to catch an assassin.
But can the group of friends find the killer before anyone else gets hurt?

When Deborah Sprinkle retired from teaching chemistry, she wanted to do three things—one of which was to write a mystery novel.
After many years of honing her craft, Deborah realized her dream. Deadly Guardian debuted in May, 2019. Deborah’s second book in the series, Death of an Imposter, was published November 24th, 2020. And the third is under contract for November of 2021. She continues to win awards for her short stories, articles, flash fiction, and novels.
Deborah lives in Memphis with her greatest fan, her husband of 49+ years, and continues to be an ordinary woman serving an extraordinary God.

Wisdom Wednesday: Delores Topliff
Hello everyone!
Today we have author, Delores Topliff, author of Books Afloat here to talk about her writing tips for author and new writers, and to share with us her upcoming new release, Christmas Tree Wars.
Welcome Delores!
Name: Delores Topliff
Genre: Historical but some Contemporaries are also in the works.
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Latest Novel: Christmas Tree Wars
Writing Tip:
If you have to step away from a writing project for a while OR encounter writer’s block, this usually jolts me out of it.
It’s like driving up a steep hill when you don’t have enough momentum to make it up the hill the first time. Then, I back down, reread what I’ve written before, remind myself of my final writing goals, and then press the gas pedal to the metal and start writing. Have fun on the journey. The view is great from the other side coasting down.
Writing Tip for New Writers:
Jump in the water and swim. If it’s winter and conditions are not ideal, break the ice and jump in and swim anyway (even for a brief amount of time). Nothing can be critiqued or revised until it’s on the page. Once you start, you will see ways to improve your project and new exciting ways to bring your story to more engaging three-dimensional life.

Kris Lundquist, a young New York City financial planner, returns home to Wisconsin for two weeks to help his Swedish-American Christmas tree grower dad survive financial crisis. There, he gets re-acquainted with Marcie Halvorsen, their cranky Norwegian-American neighbor’s niece who is home helping her uncle do the same. Kris and Marcie compete in contests to provide national Christmas tree to build businesses, but only one can win. Despite their relationship being as star-crossed as Romeo and Juliet’s, their romance helps their families and town rediscover the reason for the season and even inspires an annual Christmas-in-July festival.

Delores Topliff did years of college teaching, traveling, living, and writing before focusing on writing Christian novels. She continues teaching university online dividing her year being a snow-bird between living on a farm in central Minnesota and warmer winter temperatures in Northeastern Mississippi where she loves the people and accents. She brags about her two fine doctor sons and five delightful grandchildren.

Wisdom Wednesday: Brett Armstrong
Hello everyone!
I’m excited to have Brett Armstrong back with us for Wisdom Wednesday. As a freelance developmental editor for Scrivenings Press, I had the privilege of working with Brett and editing his newest release, Shadows at Nightfall!
Welcome back, Brett!
Name: Brett Armstrong
Genre: Christian, Epic Fantasy, YA
Publisher: Expanse Books, Scrivenings Press imprint
Latest Novel: Quest of Fire: Shadows at Nightfall
Writing Tip:
Draw your story. Or create Pinterest boards. Or use Canva. Add a discrete visual dimension to characters and settings from a book. Drawing in particular produces all sorts of neat details that can be worked into a story to flavor it. For instance, after drawing Jason from Quest of Fire, I realized he wore a hat. The hat then became a physical attribute I could use to show emotions based on what he was doing with the hat. For instance, instead of saying, “Jason is nervous.” I could say, “Jason wrung his hat in his hands.” Both impart the same sense, but one is telling and the other is showing.
The hat also became an important characterization tool because in Shadows at Nightfall where Jason got the hat is revealed and it says something about him and hopefully raises questions with readers because of what it implies about him through where it came from. Moreover, drawing a scene or piecing together some images can help with sorting out scene logistics, reasonability, etc. There’s so much to be gained through the translation of what is imagined and described in words to something tangibly visible. Plus, it gives you something to share with readers that is a personal touch.
Writing Tip for New Writers:
Take a good long look at yourself and your writing and ask yourself why you want to be a writer. As tempting and easy as it may be, don’t just answer with, “I enjoy writing.” Dig deeper. Especially for those looking to be published authors you need to build yourself a sort of refuge for when things are hard. Like when you get tough rejections, lose in awards contests, have bad sales, or get a terrible review…or ten. If you can isolate what made you love writing and pursue it then that can be a base on which you build your writing career. Financial, critical, every metric by which one might measure success can be what they are but writing will still hold meaning and purpose and passion for you. For believers in Christ, our foundation and rock of refuge is already laid. Leaning on Christ is something we need to do in all aspects of life, writing careers are no different. Cling to that why for writing and no matter what you face, you’ll persevere and complete the stories of your heart.

The hour has arrived… with all its terrors.
The shadows of Jason’s past have caught him. Having stepped into the Quest of Fire, Jason is pursued by a league of assassins formed of pure darkness. To his horror he discovers these creatures also were contracted to eliminate Anargen and his friends as they sought to understand the Tower of Light’s oracle. To unravel the mystery of who wants him dead and how he fits into the ages old quest, Jason must travel the lengths of the Lowlands. In the Ziljafu deserts a secret awaits him that will shake him to his core. He’ll have to move fast and cling fiercely to hope, as Anargen’s story twists down a bleak path to almost certain failure.
The creatures of darkness in the Lowlands have long waited for men to spurn the High King’s laws. With few concerned for the light and everything falling apart around them, Jason and Anargen will face the shadows of night’s falling as their world hangs in the balance.

Brett Armstrong has been exploring other worlds as a writer since age nine. Years later, he still writes, but now invites others along on his excursions. He’s shown readers haunting, deep historical fiction (Destitutio Quod Remissio), scary-real dystopian sci-fi (Day Moon and Veiled Sun), and dark, sweeping epic fantasy (Quest of Fire). Every story is a journey of discovery and an attempt to be a brush in the Master Artist’s hand. Through dark, despair, light, joy, and everything in between, the end is always meant to leave his fellow literary explorers with wonder and hope. Always busy with a new story, he also enjoys drawing, gardening, and spending time with his wife and son.

Wisdom Wednesday: Debbi Migit
Hello everyone!
I hope you are all having a great week. I can’t believe we are already into September! This year is flying by. But that also means that Fall is right around the corner, which makes me incredibly happy.
Today we have author Debbi Migit with us to share her favorite writing tips for Wisdom Wednesday. Welcome, Debbi!
Name: Debbi Migit
Genre: YA
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Latest Novel: September Shadows, book one in the Justice, Montana series.
Writing Tip:
Remember those plastic human body models we had in school? I visualize one of those as I begin my story. I view my first draft as the skeleton. It contains the characters, plot, and the basics needed to hold the story together.
The subsequent drafts (and there are many) are like building the rest of the model-I add the muscles, and organs, filling in more details and descriptions. Next, I add the brain. That’s when I make sure that there are no plot holes.
Finally, I add the heart. I’ve learned that because I am emotionally reserved, I write my characters that way-at first. Then, near the end of the story, when they (and I) feel safe, I go back and add the emotional depth they couldn’t express earlier. That last element is the most satisfying for me.
Writing Tip for New Writers:
Keep learning. Join organizations. Listen to podcasts. Attend writer’s conferences. I write from beginning to end without edits; this saves me from switching back and forth in my brain, which makes me dizzy When I’m done, I use Grammarly and Pro Writing aid to edit.

After the sudden death of their parents, Jess Thomas, and her sisters, Sly and Maggie, start creating a new life for themselves in Justice, Montana. But when Sly is accused of a crime she didn’t commit, the young sisters are threatened with separation through foster care. Jess is determined to prove Sly’s innocence, even at the cost of her own life.
Cole McBride has been Jess’s best friend since they were children. Now his feelings are deepening, just as Jess takes risks to protect her family. Can Cole convince Jess to trust him−and God−to help her?

Award-winning author and speaker, Debbi Migit, lives in central Illinois, surrounded by pumpkin patches and cornfields. Debbi’s hobbies include reading, writing, and avoiding arithmetic. Her favorite color is turquoise, and she collects Trixie Belden books and typewriters. If playing Candy Crush were a paying gig, she’d be rich.
Debbi’s new romance/suspense series begins with September Shadows, which was released in February 2021. Then, look for October Outlaw in November 2021, followed by November Knight and December Dreams in 2022/2023.

Wisdom Wednesday: Beth E. Westcott
Hello everyone!
I hope you are all having a wonderful week. It’s back to school time for my family, so we all adjusting to new schedules and getting back in the swing of getting up super early. Which isn’t easy when you have a house full of night owls.
I’m excited to have another author here for Wisdom Wednesday.
Welcome, Beth!
Name: Beth E. Westcott
Genre: Sweet Christian Romance
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Latest Novel: Heart’s Desire
Writing Tip:
Don’t let unnecessary distractions rob you of your writing time.
Writing Tip for New Writers:
Learn to write well, ask questions, ask for help when you need it. Be willing to invest time, effort, and money as you would for establishing any career. Connect with others in the writing/publishing community through conferences and on-line groups and classes, or people in your community who are also interested in writing. Read books about writing craft and books in your genre. And remember that sometimes life interrupts our best-laid plans. If God is calling you to write, you are not alone in this.

When Aubrey White and Jeremy Abbot meet again at her brother’s wedding, neither of them is thinking about falling in love. Both focused on their education and careers, they are surprised by love, and they soon learn that falling in love doesn’t follow a straight path to happily ever after.
The stress caused by busy schedules, misunderstandings, a broken promise, a sister’s stubbornness, and a secret, threaten to uproot their plans for a future together.
Is God showing them that the desire of their hearts is not His plan for them?

A life-long lover of books and reading, Beth’s first Christian romance novel, Meadow Song, debuted in 2018, republished by Scrivenings Press in 2020.
Lillenas Drama accepted some of her church holiday manuscripts for publication in their Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving Program Builders. Several devotions appeared in Penned for the Heart and one in The Secret Place. Her short story “Sadie and the Princess” is included in Heart-warming Horse Stories on Amazon. Heart’s Desire, her second novel, was released by Scrivenings Press on July 27, 2021.
