God’s Will Is Good

God's Will is Good by Elizabeth George

Do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2

This verse found in Romans 12 is the key to understanding what it means to follow God with all your heart.

It starts with a command, “Do not be conformed to this world”, and continues with how to obey that command, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. This is followed by the promise, “That you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

What an incredible promise! To know and live out God’s will should be every Christian’s desire and dream. His will is what we should strive after and we should desire to exist in the center of His astounding will. But what do we know from this verse about God’s will?

God’s will is good. His will for you reflects one of His most compelling attributes–His goodness. We have a good God. His goodness is settled forever. While circumstances around you and involving you may be difficult, hard, or downright miserable, know that God is at work, eventually (and sometimes not until eternity) making all things good.

We also, as believers, can trust that if life changes need to be made, He will be with you, guiding you, directing you, and protecting you.

Renew your mind with this truth, this promise, this fact, this certainty, this assurance. You can cry out to God for wisdom and discernment as you deal with difficult events in life. This is how you renew your mind. Rather than succumbing to your fears or shame, you can choose to think on God’s truth, faithfulness, and guidance. Believe you have a good God who causes all things, including His will, to work together for your good (Romans 8:28).

RESPOND:

Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to live in your perfect will. Renew our minds, that we may not be conformed to the world. Amen.

REFLECT:

How can I see God’s goodness around me? How have I seen God faithfulness or goodness in difficult times?

REMEMBER:

Renew your mind by pursuing God’s Word, and continue to seek Him for wisdom when the difficulties of life seem overwhelming.

Living with Power and Confidence

Living with Power and Confidence by Elizabeth and Jim George

Where does God have you today? What roles and responsibilities have been given you by your Lord? And how about your dreams—and your heart’s desires? Many of these indicate God’s directions for your life.

Take some time to discover what the Bible says about your roles… and then pray about them. Why not jot down some dreams you have too? Write them down in your Bible, your prayer book, a personal journal, or a special notebook dedicated to dreaming and planning and doing as you become a woman after God’s own heart.

Jesus knew all about how difficult life would be on this fallen planet. He’s already provided exactly what you need. First and foremost, Jesus offers forgiveness to all who place their trust in Him. Your sins, past, present, and future were forgiven because Jesus bore them for you on the cross (Romans 5:1,5,9). He conquered the power that sin has over us when He rose from the dead (Romans 5:21 and 8:2).

Jesus also assured that believers were provided a “Helper,” the Holy Spirit. Jesus first mentioned the promised Helper to His disciples after they were saddened when He told them He would soon leave. To encourage them, He said, “It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart I will send Him to you” (John 16:7).

The Holy Spirit would be there to guide, direct, and motivate them just as Jesus had when He was physically present on this earth. As a final assurance that He wasn’t leaving the disciples without the resources they needed to serve Him, Jesus promised, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8).

God’s road to success is quite simple: As you faithfully follow Him with all your heart and are obedient to fulfill His will for you, you will be blessed. His goals for you are achievable because of the indwelling presence and power of the Holy Spirit. You can enjoy success. Yes, you’re human, and you will have moments when you fail, slide back, fall down, or stay in one place for a while. But as you rely on God and do what He asks of you through His Word and prayer, He will give you the desire and confidence-and power-to move on and enjoy life in Him.

RESPOND:

Thank you, Lord, for your presence and the power of the Holy Spirit. Help me to rely on You and Your Word for success. Amen.

RENEWING RESOURCES:

Don't guess about the next step and hope for the best. Get a clear view of the right path as you follow God's wisdom found in the book of Proverbs. Bestselling author and Bible teacher Elizabeth George takes you on a journey through the 31 chapters of Proverbs, which cover the matters closest to your heart

REFLECT:

How can I practically live in the power of the Spirit? What personal goals will help me accomplish being a woman after God’s heart?

REMEMBER:

As you follow God with all your heart, His Spirit and Word will guide and help you to live a successful life.

Give God Your Life

Give God Your Life by Elizabeth and Jim George

Our devotion to God is strengthened when we offer Him a fresh commitment each day. Every morning, in a simple, genuine prayer, start fresh with God by giving Him all that you are, all that you have: now, forever, and daily. Lay everything on God’s altar in what one saint of old called the “surrendered life.”

Give God Your Life

Give God your life, your imperfect body, your health-or lack of it, your husband, each child, your home, your possessions. Nurture the habit of placing these blessings in God’s loving hands to do with them what He will. This habit reminds us that these blessings are not ours to begin with—they are His! A daily prayer of commitment helps us to release what we think are our rights to these gifts. As the saying goes, “Hold all things lightly and nothing tightly.

I find these words from nineteenth-century devotional writer Andrew Murray helpful: “God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.” Aim at some kind of daily commitment to God. It can be as simple as this prayer, the first of F.B. Meyer’s seven rules for living: “Make a daily, definite, audible consecration of yourself to God. Say it out loud: ‘Lord, today I give myself anew to you.’”

The prayer of commitment I love best, and have written on the front page of my Bible, is that of Betty Scott Stam, a China Inland Mission worker. She and her husband were eventually led through the streets of China to their execution by decapitation, while their baby lay behind in its crib. This was her daily prayer:

Lord, I give up all my own plans and purposes, all my own desires and hopes, and accept Thy will for my life. I give myself, my time, my all, utterly to Thee to be Thine forever. Fill me and seal me with Thy Holy Spirit. Use me as Thou wilt, send me where Thou wilt, work out Thy whole will in my life at any cost, now and forever.

In this case, the cost was high. This total commitment to God cost Betty Stam her ministry, her husband, her child, her life. But that kind of commitment is indeed our high calling as His children (Romans 8:17).

Giving Our All to Christ

I pray that your heart belongs to Christ, that you have entered into an eternal relationship with God through His Son, Jesus. If this is true for you, thank Him for the wonderful privilege of being called a child of God!

However, if you are unsure about where you stand with God or if you know quite clearly you are living your life apart from God, purpose to make things right with Him. Spend time in prayer. Confess and deal with any sin. Invite Jesus to be your Savior, and by doing so, welcome Christ into your life and become a new creature in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17).

RESPOND:

God, I want to be a woman after Your heart—a woman who lives her life in You, through You, and for You. Amen.

A Picture of Transformation

A Picture of Transformation by Elizabeth and Jim GeorgeI vividly remember teaching a Sunday School class from the book of Joshua-Chapter 2, specifically. It stands out to me because this chapter features the life of Rahab and gives us a picture of transforming faith. I want to share the exciting truths of how God changes a person like Rahab – and you and me – from the inside out.

Does God Save Sinners?

Yes. God can save even the worst of sinners. Have you ever been guilty of thinking that someone you know is beyond God’s help? Maybe you believed they were too far gone to be reached by the gospel. Rahab could have been seen in this light. Yet she, and many other sinners, were never out of the reach of God’s salvation.

Pick your favorite “despicable sinner” and pray for their salvation. Don’t give up on those who seem hopeless. God can change anyone! He didn’t give up on Rahab, and He didn’t give up on you.

Does Faith in God Change Our Lives?

Yes. Faith in God absolutely transforms lives. Rahab heard how God parted the Red Sea and destroyed the nations who stood in the way of Israel’s path. In her heart, she believed in the power of Israel’s God. By faith she chose to stand with Israel, even against her own people. Her transformation was a total transformation, and God honored her faith.

If you're a believer, the work of transformation is already at work and will be complete when you meet Jesus face to face. Paul said it this way, “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). Until then, are you helping or hindering God’s process? Ask Him to show you any areas in your life where you are resisting His work of transformation. Rahab submitted herself totally to God. Can you say the same?

Will Other People Know That I've Changed?

Absolutely. Faith in God produces fruit. Living faith will grow. Rahab’s faith was acknowledged when she declared to the spies, “The Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath” (Joshua 2:9,11). With her resolution came immediate fruit as she chose to hide the spies and turn her back on her own heathen people.

In James 2:25, in the New Testament, James uses Rahab to illustrate this point of faith producing fruit when he said, “Was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?” James brought this truth home when he also said, “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (2:17). Be your own personal fruit inspector. “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5). If you have saving faith, you will produce fruit.

Will My Heart Change Towards Others?

It most certainly will. Faith in God prompts concern for the lost. When she confronted the spies, Rahab’s first concern was for her family. “Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my… father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death” (Joshua 2:12-13). As God transformed her heart, Rahab developed a concern for the salvation of her family and extracted a promise not only for her salvation, but also for theirs.

To learn more about Rahab and other biblical characters, see The Remarkable Women of the Bible.

RESPOND:

Lord, thank You for leading me to the center of Your will. Help me to see Your hand in everything that comes my way as I follow You today. May I represent You well in all I do by performing my assigned tasks without complaint and with excellence and joy—“for I serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:24). Amen.

An Example of Godliness

An Example of Godliness by Elizabeth and Jim George

It’s always good to see such an awesome, otherworldly, hard-to-define quality like godliness lived out and fleshed out in other women. After all, as the saying instructs us, “One picture is worth a thousand words!” So take a look at Anna. Her story is found in Luke 2:36-38.

Luke’s words paint a poignant picture of this dear woman. From him we learn that Anna was an “older woman.” An 84-year-old woman (“of a great age,” explains Luke), Anna was widowed after only seven years of marriage. And Anna shows us what it’s like to live in a constant state of worship. What does a woman do who loves the Lord and is a widow? Well, our Anna devoted herself to the continual service of God and of His temple. She was a constant, faithful worshiper — not a casual attender or observer.

Anna lived her life in the temple. Anna’s life could have been a long, sad, and lonely one. But she filled it with glorious service to God. She centered her days on the temple, the worship of God, and the people who exalted Him there.

Anna lived her life in prayer and fasting. Both prayer and fasting are personal disciplines — quiet disciplines — that require commitment, dedication, self-control, and consecration to God. Anna devoted herself to these quiet disciplines and to a quiet, serious life of loving and worshiping God.

Anna lived her life in anticipation of the Savior. Anna looked for the Christ…and was blessed to see the baby Jesus when He was brought into the temple for the first time, to praise God for Him, and to speak of Jesus to all who entered the temple.

Can you imagine any more wonderful way to spend your life and your time and your days and your moments than to spend them in the Lord, immersed in Him, looking to Him, desiring Him beyond all that this poor world offers? You are most blessed to possess such a glorious calling.

The first step toward any noble goal is to desire it. And the “godliest” goal you can have in life is to set your affections on becoming this woman the Bible exalts so highly — a woman whose whole soul is absorbed in worshiping Him.

RESPOND

Dear Lord, I pray my life honors You and reflects the quality of godliness to others. May I use my time to Your glory. Amen.

Getting to the Heart of God’s Word

Getting to the Heart of God's Word by Elizabeth George

My girls are 13 months apart, which means that during their early years, I often felt like I had twins. I had to really be on my toes-there was little-or-no catching of mistakes I made on the older child so that they wouldn’t be repeated with the younger one. What I was—or wasn’t—doing to love and raise my children was being done to both of them at the same time.

I quickly realized the importance of getting God’s Word into my heart each day. I tasted the powerful effect it had, both on my parenting and on the atmosphere in our home. The same can be true for you. When I didn’t take the time to nurture my heart in the Word, I found myself -

1. Running on empty. When we spiritually run on empty, our hearts become hollow and numb. Without spiritual refueling, our parenting is empty, too. Life becomes dull and devoid of spiritual energy, purpose, motivation, and accomplishment for both parent and child.

2. Heartless. If we are heartless, our parenting becomes heartless and rote. We put ourselves and our child-raising on autopilot.

3. Worldly. We become preoccupied with the things of this world and enamored by earthly pursuits and rewards, and this affects our parenting. Instead of following God’s ways, we’ll be walking and parenting in the ways of the world, allowing the things of this world will creep into our homes and into our children’s hearts.

These are all serious concerns, all brought about through missing out on the daily goodness of God’s Word. The solution? Pick up the Bible and read it. God will touch and transform our hearts through His Word.

Spend time each day reading the Bible. Share its life-giving truth with your children. It requires the sacrifice of time and energy, but the years you have with your children fly by so quickly. Psalm 119:11 says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart.”

What will happen if our hearts are dedicated to God and His Word, and filled with love for the Lord? By God’s grace, we will be godly mothers. And then we can successfully teach God’s Word to our children.

Your time in God’s Word is time God will use to make you a mom after His own heart. It is time well invested.

RESPOND

Lord, help me choose You and Your Word as my source of strength and refreshment each day. I want to deepen my understanding of Your love and Your will so that I become a mother who invests in her faith and family with everything she has and is.

Why Should I Read the Bible?

Why Should I Read the Bible by Jim and Elizabeth George

Why should we read the Bible? God’s Word is exciting and energizing. It is even thrilling! Why? Because it is life-changing and heart-transforming.

A Lifeline

Today the Bible is my lifeline. For the first twenty-eight years of my life, I turned to everything but the Bible for help. Ever since the day I discovered the truth about Jesus Christ in the Bible, I’ve relentlessly devoured His Word. My appetite for the life-giving, life-saving, life-sustaining truths in Scripture has only increased as the years have gone by.

Living by The Wisdom of the Word

Proverbs 2:6 says, “The LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” What you read between the covers of your Bible is wisdom for all your trials and for all the days of your life.

God promises you wisdom—and it’s free and readily available. Your job is to pray, seek, search, and dig for God’s wisdom in His Word. God’s job—and His promise to you—is to give you all the wisdom you ask for…and all the wisdom you need.

Do you realize what this means? It means that whatever issue or problem you are facing, you don’t have to grope around in the dark, hoping you will somehow stumble upon answers. You don’t have to stab at a solution and hope you made the right choice—the wise choice, all the time fearing that maybe you made the wrong choice. No, you have a surer way to tackle life’s problems—and gain God’s peace of mind in the process!

There is so much to tend to, worry about, fear, and beware of. Every minute of every day can be full of fear and charged with anxiety. But God and His Word quell all our fears. “But whoever listens to me [wisdom] will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil. (Proverbs 1:33)

Whenever you need wisdom, you can pray to God, ask of God, look to God’s Word... and wisdom will be given to you.

Stand on this wisdom. Live by it. And teach it to your children every day so that they, too, have the thrill of a transformed life.

RESPOND

Lord, Your Word leads me to the refuge of Your heart. It fills me with passion to love You and compassion for loving my children. Transform me, Lord. Amen.

“For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.” (John 17:8)

REMEMBER

What you read in the Bible is wisdom for all your trials & for all the days of your life.

Waging Spiritual Warfare

Waging Spiritual Warfare by Jim and Elizabeth George

The Super Bowl is a significant event this time of year. I’m not really a football fan, myself, but after growing up with three brothers and my dad, living with my husband, Jim, and having two sons-in-law, I’m somewhat familiar with the game. When the players on a team gather in a circle during a game, this is called a huddle. That’s when the players are told what the play will be.

Today I want you to imagine such a huddle... a huddle of two. The pair is made up of a seasoned coach—the apostle Paul—and a young player—timid Timothy.

Perhaps with his arm affectionately around the young Timothy’s shoulders, the aged Paul gives his protégé a few words of exhortation on how to handle the battles he’s encountering at Ephesus.

“This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience.” (1 Timothy 1:18)

Waging Spiritual Warfare

How about you, my friend? Do you need some encouragement today? Do you need a little advice for handling a difficult situation? Like many good coaches, Paul uses images to help explain to Timothy his position on the team.

A Christian must be a good soldier. Paul encouraged Timothy to “wage the good warfare” (verse 18). Paul isn’t referring to a single battle but to a military campaign.

Like Timothy, we too must...

cling tightly to our faithrefuse to give in to temptationlive out our faith with a clear conscience

A Christian must be a good sailor. In 1 Timothy 1:19, Paul switches from the picture of a military campaign to that of a shipwreck. What will help you and me navigate through sin and error? A good conscience—one that is guided by these forces:

God’s WordPrayerChristian fellowship

A Spiritual Battle

The Christian life is a battle—a spiritual battle. We may not like it, and we may wish otherwise, but it’s true. Therefore we, like Paul and Timothy, must fight the good fight. We must cling to two inseparable, valuable, dispositions of the heart—faith and a good conscience.

Is the Holy Spirit sounding any warning to your conscience about some aspect of your behavior? Are you doing what you know is right in every area of your life? Or are you deliberately ignoring an inner tug?

Take some time this week to reflect on these tough-but-important questions.

Huddle with God and ask Him for the game plan. Heed His wisdom and instruction. When you fumble, when you drop the ball (and it will happen), God gives you a way back to His plan: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Accept God’s forgiveness and grace and get back into the game.

RESPOND

Lord, You know I need Your guidance and instruction daily. I confess my sins to You today so that I can continue in Your plan. Please lead me through the battle to victory. Amen.

Putting on the Armor of God

Putting on the Armor of God by Elizabeth George

When I write, events happening around me often show up in my books. The same thing occurs in Paul’s writing as he explains the reality of spiritual warfare. Paul pens a letter from a prison where he’s been for two years, observing Roman soldiers daily. Because he learned a lot about these soldiers’ armor and weaponry, he uses this imagery to remind us of the need to prepare for spiritual battle.

Have you struggled to believe in the Bible’s truth? To stand for God? To follow Christ faithfully? Take heart! You’re not alone.

These battles are part of a great spiritual war involving this world... and the entire universe. Praise God, the ultimate victory has won by Christ! What can you do to ensure you are strong and will be victorious in your stand against Satan?

The Armor of God (Ephesians 6:14-18)Put on truth

Soldiers wore a belt around their waists to hold pieces of armor in place. The belt of truth is essential for doing battle against the lies, half-truths, and distortions of Satan.

Put on the breastplate of righteousness

The breastplate provided a soldier with protection from the neck to the thighs. Righteousness is holiness, and your faithful obedience to Christ forms a protective covering.

Put on the gospel of peace

A Roman soldier had special sandals made of soft leather with studded soles that allowed him to stand firm in combat. Putting on truth enables you to stand your ground against Satan’s lies.

Pick up the shield of faith

The large Roman shield was designed for full protection. Faith is your shield. Trusting and believing God is involved in everything you hold to and have confidence in.

Put on the helmet of salvation

The helmet protected a soldier’s head from arrows and sword blows. “Salvation” refers to your future eternal life and heaven. The helmet of salvation gives you confidence that a great and glorious victory is coming.

Wield the sword of the Spirit

The sword spoken of here was used in hand-to-hand combat. This spiritual weapon has its origin in the Spirit of God, who teaches you what the Bible means and how to apply it in your daily life.

Dressing for spiritual success is a head-to-toe process. When you put on and wear this armor, you can win the daily struggles of living for Christ wholeheartedly.

RESPOND

Lord, I will follow You into spiritual battle dressed for victory. May I never take for granted my faith. Remind me to use it as my shield each day. Guide me with Your strength. Each victory is to Your glory. Amen

How Does God Communicate with Us?

How Does God Communicate with Us by Jim George

Many people often wonder how God talks with His children. Today, He speaks through what I call “the four Cs” which answer the question, "How does God communicate with us?"

The four C's are:

Commands from the inspired Word of GodCompetent and wise counselorsCircumstances and changing conditionsConscience aided by the Holy Spirit

At some point in your life, God will use any or all of these means to direct you, if you are listening. When I struggled with making the decision to either pursue a preaching ministry or to accept a seminary teaching position, God used the wise counsel of my pastor and guidance from some close friends to help lead me.

Whether you are a pastor or an electrician, old or young, a seasoned saint or a new Christian, ask yourself: Am I listening as God speaks to me through some or all of these means? We must be sensitive to God’s Spirit and tune into His voice if we’re to know the will of God, because it may come through any of these different avenues.

Would you like to have confidence to know that God is communicating with you? Would you like your life to have a lasting impact and give glory to God?

Ask God to give you the strength to obey His commands as they come to you. God’s commands will come as you faithfully read His Word, as you faithfully hear the preaching of His Word, as you faithfully listen to wise counsel from His Word, and, as you faithfully deal with sin in your life as revealed by the light of His Word.

A desire to hear God’s commands and obediently follow His leading should be the supreme goal of our life. Our willingness to trust and obey the Lord is a key step toward being led by God through the unexpected. Hearing from God is cultivated by reading our Bible, praying, going to church, and having godly influences in our life. Once we’ve received wise, biblical counsel, we obey God one decision at a time and see where it leads you. The key to a powerful Christian life is obedience to our Lord’s leading — one decision at a time.

When you and I are obedient, we find we are in the center of God’s will. We then, along with Paul, can confidently lead and boldly influence others as we declare, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

RESPOND

Lord, thank You for leading me to the center of Your will. Help me to listen to You and hear Your commands so in everything that comes my way as I follow You. Amen.

Our devotion to God is strengthened when we offer Him a fresh commitment each day. Start fresh with God today by praying and giving Him all that you are, all that you have.

Do you have 2-3 wise, godly people in your life?

REMEMBER

A desire to obediently follow the Lord’s leading should be the supreme goal of your life. Is it?
