#6. Your Lady, She’s Shady by JJ Grey & Mofro
One of the fun parts about music is discovering new bands. My favorite new band is JJ Grey & Mofro from Florida.

#7. #Beautiful by Mariah Carey and Miguel
I have never been a big Mariah Carey fan. Like the nobleman says in the film Amadeus ‘It just has too many notes” But then in 2013 Mariah strips all that away and gives us the beautiful song. Oh yeah and that Miguel character can really sing too. :)

#9. Dance Apocalyptic by Janelle Monae
Most of Ms. Monae’s music is to esoteric for me. And she is not my favorite person on the planet. It has something to do with meeting her at The Grove. But the woman is talented. This year her talent gave us this fun single.

#10. Better in Stereo by Dove Cameron
My wife is the executive producer of Disney Channel’s new hit series Liv and Maddie. Pretty much everyone on the planet things this song is about the twins played by Dove. But here’s a little secret. I think the song is really about Betsy and I. Or every couple that is in love.

31. Gosford Park
The electricity in this film still excites me. One of America’s most revolutionary directors takes on Masterpiece Theatre.

Went I think of Roy Lichtenstein I think of comic books.
Actually not comics books.
One frame of a comic.
And let’s be honest not actually very interesting frames.
I was in Columbus, Ohio this weekend and I was surprised to see that Roy was not only from there but credited Ohio with influencing his work.
I’ve always thought of Roy as being 100 % New York City.
Where else in the world would someone pay millions of dollars for a single boring frame of a comic.
So it made sense when I got off the plane and saw this amazing scuplture.
It was a gift to the people of Columbus.
People who know you before you were famous know when you are full of shit.
That’s why he must have given them this.

Have you ever read Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury?
It’s impossible.
Actually supposedly the whole book is not impossible.
But the first chapter which is narrated by a mentally damanged young man is so difficult to follow that Faulkner said it should be printed in 14 different colors of ink to make it clearer.
(14 colors of ink wasn’t possible in Faulkner’s time. But last week a company announced they had recently done it. And the book is only 350 dollars!)
So recently when I was in Faulkner books in New Orleans I skipped the Faulkner section.
The nice woman who ran the store asked me why.
And then before I could answer she smiled and said…"Sound and the Fury"?
Yes, I smiled weakly.
And then she handed me a copy of Faulkner’s short stories.
"You’re buying this."
(There some women in the South that it is impossible to say ‘no’ to)
I had no idea of the power of his writing.
My favorite story is A Rose for Emily.
Sappy title but the writing is thrilling.
And if the last line doesn’t make you gasp you should see a doctor because chances are you are already dead.
Now I am a Faulkner addict.
Who knows I might even attempt Sound and the Fury again.
(But only in 14 colors)
