Beauty for Ashes

Beauty for ashes – God’s amazing alchemy. Dorothy Day wrote, “Speaking of Christ: He did not force anyone to believe . . . . He did not coerce anyone. He emptied himself and became a servant.” Once, as I was getting off the freeway ramp by work, I gave a $10 bill to a man...

Accepting the Prophet’s Invitation to Give Thanks

As the pandemic wears on, everyone I know is talking about how they are responding to the challenges before them. Each of us have distinct roles and responsibilities, so our situations are not identical. Young women struggle to establish themselves. Young mothers are more isolated than usual. Women are overwhelmed with helping children with online...

Keeping the Soul Ajar (with UFOs, roses, drums, ruins, trees, crystals, whooshes…)

A thin sheet of ice formed over the top of the water I had left out in a bucket overnight. Until the sun came up and warmed it, the rose petals and leaves were encased and frozen in time. I started to break up the ice and then paused. It was magical to look at....

Caesar’s Things

Last night was one of those rare nights that I couldn’t sleep, turning over and over in my head a social media exchange about politics. I say rare because this is exactly why I’ve mostly avoided social media for months now. Seeing the constant stream of antagonism/ignorance/self-righteousness keeps me up at night and occupies my...

Partnered in a Pandemic: A Pebble in Whose Shoe?

Now that I am living During the Pandemic (DTP), I am noticing so much more about my husband even though I have known him for 31 years. We started off as neighbors, fellow ward members, and coworkers in the BYU Writing Center. For the last 23 years we have transformed into an old married couple....

Praying Not to Shrink

We have our son and his family living with us during these pandemic days. Their little 3-year-old son Nelson and his 9-month-old brother Linden are my daily buddies. Linden can now scooch in a commando crawl and reach just about any destination he sets off for. Nelson is gobbling up vocabulary and spitting words out...

On Choosing

“What I’ve taken away: if anyone asks you to spring down a gravel road in your bare feet? Kindly decline. If someone asks you to slowly walk into a lake fully clothed at sunrise? Absolutely do it.” – Annie Murphy In this, the year of Covid, an anonymous poster once said, “Beware the Ides of...

WORDS FALL IN: A Vision of Heavenly Mother

“We have been lost to each other for so long. My name means nothing to you. My memory is dust. This is not your fault, or mine. The chain connecting mother to daughter was broken and the word passed to the keeping of men, who had no way of knowing.” Anita Diamont I denied it....
