Whether you’re prepping for your own big day, tagging along as a bridesmaid, or just love the idea of romance wrapped in vows and velvet cake, there’s nothing better than a good wedding-themed novel. From fake dates and second chances to runaway brides and secrets that surface mid-rehearsal dinner, the books listed below capture all the magic (and mayhem) of love stories set around weddings. These novels and anthologies are perfect for your summer reading list with no RSVP required. And the two wedding-themed romance anthologies included in this list include novellas from my Kingsmill Courtships Series. ☺

While he’s furious when they’re forced to work together, there’s no denying Mariella is hardworking, talented…and gorgeous. In fact, though Alex keeps reminding himself that they’re enemies, something deeper is growing…daring them to admit that a rocky past might lead to something unexpectedly wonderful.

Romantic ComedyThank You For Breaking My Heart by Diana Muñoz Stewart

AMAZON BLURB: {This book is currently on preorder and will release on July 15, 2025}

No one knows for sure what happens on Isla del Corazón Roto, Heartbreak Island. No cell. No internet. No distractions. After being jilted at the aisle, Lucinda “Lucky” Moreno heads to the no-frills retreat to heal her broken heart, only to find herself battling not only her past and the elements, but the most annoying man she’s ever met.

Six-months after being dumped by her fiancé, Lucinda “Lucky” Moreno heads to an intense heartbreak recovery workshop. She’d thought giving up all modern conveniences and being away from home would be the hard parts, but that was before meeting the most arrogant, bullheaded man on the entire island. Maybe, on the planet.

Ezequiel “Zeke” Hart’s funding of a renowned workshop on healing heartbreak isn’t entirely altruistic. He’s secretly hoping to discern what makes people fall in love, and if–as he’s long suspected–he might be too damaged for romance. He refuses to let the infuriatingly spontaneous Lucky Moreno derail his quest for the truth.

Can a tightly-coiled control freak and an injured free spirit find the courage to love each other despite a lifetime’s worth of obstacles, their own deep-seated fears, and the cunning of a scheming ex?

They haven’t spoken since, and never planned to, except they have one final book due on contract.

Facing crossroads in their personal and professional lives, they’re forced to reunite. The last thing they ever thought they’d do again is hole up in the tiny Florida town where they wrote their previous book, trying to finish a new manuscript quickly and painlessly. Working through the reasons they’ve hated each other for the past three years isn’t easy, especially not while writing a romantic novel.

While passion and prose push them closer together in the Florida heat, Katrina and Nathan will learn that relationships, like writing, sometimes take a few rough drafts before they get it right.

Packing for Summer Travels

Summer travel season is here! And whether you’re jetting off to a tropical island or hitting the highway for a scenic road trip, packing smart can make or break your travel experience. It’s not just about what clothes to bring (though we’ll cover that too). It’s about how to pack efficiently, what to bring for comfort and convenience, and how to tailor your packing strategy depending on your mode of transportation. I’m also adding in some information I included in my Spring Travel post because Summer 2025 is going to have similar challenges, including airport issues and problems with the new travel ID requirements.

Also, if you’re driving, here’s a blog post about how to prep your car for long summer trips.

How to Pack for Summer Travel: Clothes, Essentials & Smart Strategies for Planes and Cars✈  TSA Changes You Should Know for Summer 2025 REAL ID Deadline Reminder
After several delays, the REAL ID enforcement date began on May 7, 2025. Now every traveler 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to board domestic flights. Acceptable alternatives include a valid U.S. passport, passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards (like Global Entry), U.S. military ID, permanent resident card (Green Card), and tribal-issued photo ID. If your license doesn’t have a star or flag in the upper corner, it may not be compliant.
➤ Tip: Check your current ID now and make an appointment with your state’s DMV if needed. You may also want to update your passport now to avoid the summer rush.➤ Tip: Now is also a good time to see if your passport can be renewed online/mail. I just recently did this and while it was expensive, it was easy and I had my new passport within three weeks of submitting.

Mobile ID Expansion : More airports now accept state-issued digital IDs in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. If you’re traveling through airports in states like Arizona, Maryland, or Georgia, check if you can breeze through security with just your phone.
➤ Tip: Make sure your phone is charged and unlockable (biometrics or passcode) to use this feature.
PreCheck Update : As of March 2025, TSA PreCheck lines are now more clearly marked, and family lanes are available for travelers with kids under 12. You may also see more CT scanners, which allow you to leave electronics and liquids in your bag.
➤ Tip: These lanes aren’t everywhere yet, so don’t assume—look for signage or ask a TSA officer.
Carry-On Liquid Exceptions for Medications & Baby Items : There’s better signage now clarifying the 3-1-1 rule exceptions. You’re still allowed larger quantities of medically necessary liquids, baby formula, and breast milk—but they must be declared.
➤ Tip: Use a clear, separate bag for these items and tell the officer before screening.Book Morning Flights when delays are less likely to cascade throughout the day. Actually, I think this tip is a good rule to follow no matter the season you’re traveling in.Flying with pets requires a while other level of preparation. Check TSA for more information and the key to success is planning early.Air Tags/Tiles—I love these things and attach them to everything now when I travel. Suitcases, purses, wallets, phones, even my car. I put them on anything I can’t afford to lose. And since another Prime Day is coming up soon, it’s a great time to grab a few more. They’re not cheap, but they’re a whole lot cheaper than having to replace whatever you’ve lost.🧳 Start With a Packing List
Before you even unzip your suitcase, jot down everything you need. A packing list saves you time, space, and the headache of realizing you forgot your swimsuit… again. Even if you’re not normally a list-maker, I promise that even a list written on the back of a used bill envelope will make your life easier.
First, break your list down into categories:
Clothing & Shoes
Toiletries
Electronics
Travel docs and IDs
Snacks & entertainment
Medications
Specialty items (hiking gear, baby stuff, pet supplies, etc.)Special list for Babies and Young ChildrenSpecial List for Pets & Pet Supplies➤ Tip: Pack a Small Umbrella or Poncho
Summer thunderstorms sometimes appear without warning. A compact umbrella or disposable poncho require little space and can save you from a good soaking.
➤ Tip: Allergy Meds, Just in Case
I know I mentioned this in my Spring post, but it’s important enough to mention again. Even if you don’t suffer at home, traveling to new environments can trigger allergies. Toss a travel-size antihistamine into your toiletry kit. And while you’re at it, put together a small First Aid Kit because you never know when you’ll scrape a knee or get a bee sting.🧳 Clothing: Light, Layered, and Versatile
Summer clothing is light and easy to pack—but that doesn’t mean you should bring your entire closet. Aim for mix-and-match outfits that can take you from beach to dinner with a change of accessories or shoes. Bring lightweight, versatile layers. Think packable rain jackets, T-shirts, and cardigans.
Pack:
2-3 pairs of shorts
2-3 lightweight tops (tank tops, tees)
1-2 nicer outfits (dress or polo & chinos)
1 swimsuit (or two, if you’re swimming often)
1 light sweater or long-sleeve for cooler evenings
1 rain jacket or packable poncho
Sandals or flip-flops + walking shoes
Sun hat or cap
Sunglasses➤ Tip: Layer, Layer, Layer
One of my new favorite online shops for great travel clothes is a website called Quince. I am not in any way affiliated with this store, but I shop here often and love everything I’ve ever purchased. For summertime, they specialize in cotton and linen dresses, skirts, and wide-legged pants. They also have shorts and camisoles.
➤ Tip: : Roll your clothes to save space and reduce wrinkles. And use packing cubes to keep everything organized.🧳 Toiletries: TSA-Approved or Car-Ready
For Flying: Keep your liquids under 3.4 oz and packed in a clear, zip-top bag. For Driving: You can go full-size if space allows. But keep frequently used items in a separate, easy-to-reach bag.A few non-negotiable that you don’t want to forget:
Travel-size sunscreen (yes, it’s a liquid on an airplane!)
Toothbrush, toothpaste, flossHair brush & hair accessories (if necessary)
Deodorant
Razor (must be in checked luggage if flying per TSA rules, although some airports are less stringent about this than others)
Moisturizer (planes are dry)
Lip balm with SPFMake up and removersFeminine productsI’m sure there a million other things you can add to this list!

🧳 Plane Packing Tips:
Flying this summer? With delays and full flights more common than ever, smart carry-on packing is essential.
Carry-on essentials:
ID, passport, boarding pass (without these, you’re not going anywhere! lol)
Phone + charger + battery pack
Noise-canceling headphones or earbuds
Refillable water bottle (empty through security)
Healthy snacks (granola bars, trail mix, dried fruit)
Book or Kindle
Change of clothes, maybe even a bathing suit (in case your luggage is delayed)
Face mask, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes
➤ Tip: Dress in layers since summer flights can get chilly, especially overnight or near the window.

🧳 Road Trip Packing Tips:
When traveling by car, you’ve got more freedom. But there is also more potential for disorganization. Keep your essentials accessible and your luggage manageable with packing cubes or tote bags with pockets that you can keep under your seat instead of in the trunk or far back of the vehicle.
Must-haves:
Cooler with drinks and snacks
Phone mount for navigation
Sunglasses and sunscreen
Blanket for picnics or naps
First-aid kit
Emergency roadside kit (jumper cables, flashlight, etc.)
A trash bag or container to keep things tidy
➤ Tip: Use packing cubes or soft-sided bags instead of bulky suitcases. Designate a “go-bag” with snacks, chargers, wipes, and activities, especially if you have kids.

🧳 Don’t Forget the Extras
These often-overlooked items can make your summer trip so much smoother:
Bug spraySun hatsExtra sunglasses
Aloe vera or after-sun lotion
Travel pillow and eye mask (great for flights or long drives)
Reusable shopping bag or tote
Laundry bag for dirty clothesBeach towelsBeach toysantibacterial wipes/lotionsVitamin C Tablets (because everyone hates to get a cold on their vacation!)Cold medicine and allergy medicine (just in case!)
Copies of important documents (or digital backups)*Anything you need for babies and young children*Anything you need for petsAnd anything else you can think of!

Final Thoughts: Pack Light, Travel Smart
Summer travel should feel carefree and fun. What’s not fun is being weighed down by overstuffed bags or forgotten essentials. By planning ahead, thinking about your mode of transportation, and packing with intention, you’ll be ready to enjoy every sunny moment. Now let’s go make some memories… and don’t forget the sunscreen.*Pets and children deserve their own, exhausting lists!

It’s Preorder Time for Heroes, Holidays, and Hope

Last month I announced that I’m participating in another charity anthology novella collection that comes out later this year. It’s called Heroes, Holidays, and Hope Vol. 3, and all of the stories take place during Memorial Day weekend. ( I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I write every day and the seasons I write about NEVER match the seasons I’m living in. lol)

And today I’m so excited to share the preorder link for Heroes, Holidays, and Hope (Vol. 3). This is an anthology that I’ve read and loved in the past, and this year I’m so happy to be a participating author. All of the authors are either veterans or a member of a veteran’s family, and the proceeds of this anthology will support Soldiers’ Angels. This romance anthology will include tropes such as friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, unexpected proposals (and maybe a secret baby), brother’s best friend, Instalove, and more… and all of the stories will take place on Memorial Day weekend.

My story in this anthology will be a new novella in my Kingsmill Courtships series … it’s about Abe Mosby, Luke’s twin brother (from Luke’s Last Hot Summer). When Abe meets his lovely-yet-lost heroine Daphne in One Night By Firelight, they both discover that two lost souls can find their Happily Ever After, even if it’s by accident in the middle of a rain storm. I love this story, and I can’t wait to share that that cover in a few weeks.

Heroes, Holidays, and Hope Vol. 3

Sacrifice. Valor. Patriotism.

They fought courageously on the battlefield. Now they’re fighting for love.

We are a group of Veterans and Veterans’ family members who are also bestselling and award-winning romance authors. We put our group together to publish a yearly limited edition, military romance collection set around various holidays. Each volume supports a military and veteran related charity.

We’re excited to bring you our third collection, which supports Wounded Warrior Project®, whose mission is to empower wounded service personnel through programs and services such as long-term rehabilitative care, mental health care, and career counseling.

“Peace does not come just because we wish for it. Peace must be fought for.” Lyndon Johnson, 1966. And so it is on Memorial Day that we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom.

These stories embody sacrifice and resilience, passion and love, and the enduring human spirit. Enjoy these military romances of various tropes set around the Memorial Day holiday.

This “must have” collection is only available for 6 months after launch day, then it’s gone for good as we prepare for Volume 4!

Participating authors include: Dania Voss, Laura M. Baird, Barb Simmons, D.C. Stone, Megan Michelle, and Sharon Wray.

This book releases on December 6, 2025!

Cover Reveal: A Room with a Groom

In a few weeks, I’m collaborating with a wonderful group of authors in a wedding-themed anthology called Save the Date. But today I want to share the cover and blurb for my story within this anthology. It’s a novella in my Kingsmill Courtships series called A Room with a Groom. It’s the story of Ben Mosby and Sophie Sinclair, an engaged couple who are desperate to make it to their wedding on time. But when they are forced to face their past, hours before they’re supposed to say their I Do’s, Sophie has to decide if she’s strong enough to save both of them. This novella actually came out last year, in a shorter form, and when I had the opportunity to add words and join this anthology, I took it. So I’m excited to share it again, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing it!

A Room with a Groom

Will these star-crossed lovers make it to the church on time?

Ben Mosby, a former member of an outlaw motorcycle club, has reformed his life. As the sheriff of Kingsmill, VA, he’s determined to keep his small mountain town safe, and he’s given his heart to Sophie Sinclair, the only woman he’s ever loved. But on the eve of their of their long-awaited wedding, a rival outlaw MC from Ben’s old life roars back, carrying a violent grudge.

Sophie has overcome poverty, homelessness, and an outlaw biker ex-boyfriend. And now that she’s been reunited with Ben, the love of her life, she won’t allow any of that sadness to define her future. She’s even found the perfect wedding dress in a town hours away from Kingsmill. But as they return for their rehearsal dinner, their future is put to the ultimate test.

With forest fires raging and outlaw bikers chasing them, their journey to the altar becomes a desperate fight for survival. Old demons resurface and alliances are tested. But when they seek refuge in an isolated cabin, surrounded by danger, Sophie must decide if their love is strong enough to douse the flames of their past. If not, she may lose Ben forever.

DIY Summer Cleaning Supplies for a Fresh, Clean House (That Smells Like a Romance Novel)

There’s something about summer that makes me crave lightness, especially after the May rains and all the mud that Penny (our rescue dog) drags into the house. I enjoy opening windows and cleaning countertops. I love it when the scent of lemon and lavender lingers in the air. Maybe it’s the sunshine or the fact that June always feels like a fresh start—like the second chapter of the year, waiting to be rewritten. That’s why one of my favorite Prep & Plan rituals is my annual Summer House Refresh.

But instead of stocking up on harsh store-bought cleaners, I make my own. These DIY summer cleaning supplies are simple, effective, and smell like the inside of a romance novel—equal parts floral, citrus, and nostalgia. So since it’s Saturday morning when I’m writing this post, let’s clean like the heroine who just inherited a cottage and the hero is stopping by to help paint the porch swing.

Great for: Counters, mirrors, bathroom surfaces, appliances

You’ll need:

1 cup distilled white vinegar1 cup waterPeels from 2-3 lemons or orangesA few sprigs of fresh rosemary10 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

To make:
Combine all ingredients in a mason jar and let it sit for 3–5 days. Strain out the peels and rosemary, then pour the infused vinegar mix into a spray bottle.

Use: Spray and wipe with a microfiber cloth. Enjoy the spa-fresh scent!

Tips for the DIY Cleaner NewbieUse amber glass spray bottles to preserve essential oil potencyLabel your bottles (you think you’ll remember which is which… but you won’t. At least I never do.)Test a small patch if you’re unsure how a surface will reactMake it an event: open the windows, play your favorite playlist, and pretend you’re the heroine in your favorite RomCom movieClean House, Clear Mind, Happy Heart

There’s a quiet kind of joy in creating a space that feels fresh, lived-in, and loved. And when that space smells like citrus and lavender and you’ve made it yourself? Even better.

So whether you’re cleaning because you’ve got a guest (or a fictional hero) arriving, or you just want to feel a little more peaceful in your everyday, these DIY recipes are my go-to summer refresh essentials.

Finding Forever is Finally Here!

I was married on a beautiful June morning, so I have a special place in my heart for June wedding anthologies. And today’s release, Finding Forever, is one of my favorites. This anthology includes 12 sweet-to-steamy stories where the hero and heroine meet at a wedding… with all of the disasters that often occur during wedding weekends. My story in this collection is a new novella in my Kingsmill Courtships series. This story, Luke’s Last Hot Summer, is a small town steamy, forced proximity, and opposites attract love story with a grumpy heroine and sunshine hero. There is also a race against time, some hot summer steaminess, and an outlaw MC causing trouble hours before the wedding. (Yes, I threw in all the tropes!).

This love story about Abe Mosby and Holly Westfield is about two lost people who are each running away from their pasts… in different directions… until they discover that they are each others’ future. I know I say this after every story I write in this series, but I think this is my new favorite story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing it. Now let’s ring those wedding bells!

Luke’s Last Hot Summer

He’s running from his past while she’s racing toward her future… but love is about to change everything.

Luke Mosby has always been the black sheep of his family. While his five brothers settled down in Kingsmill, Virginia, Luke gave up practicing law to open a surf shop in Miami and seek out adventure. From fighting forest fires to riding bulls in rodeos, he’s built a life far from home, avoiding the feeling that he doesn’t quite belong. But now, for the first time in years, he’s heading back to Kingsmill for his cousin’s wedding—a reunion he dreads with his now-married brothers who seem to have it all figured out.

Dr. Holly Westfield thought she was ready for a change of pace. After leaving Boston’s busy hospitals behind, she’s taken a job in small-town Kingsmill, hoping to find the peace that’s eluded her. But her journey takes an unexpected turn when she’s forced to share a ride with Luke Mosby—a man who is everything she isn’t: free-spirited, spontaneous, and determined to live life by his own rules.

As they drive to Kingsmill and they hit unexpected delays, sparks fly between the wandering adventurer and the structured doctor. Can they find common ground in a place they both want to call home, or will Luke’s fear of being an outcast keep him from the love he never saw coming?

The Romance Tropes We Secretly (or Not-So-Secretly) Adore

As a romance author and avid reader, I’ve always been fascinated by the recurring themes that make our hearts flutter and pages turn. These recurring themes, known as tropes, are familiar yet endlessly adaptable. Tropes are the backbone of many love stories we cherish, and I use them liberally in all of my romances. So let’s delve into the top ten (or eleven) beloved tropes, exploring why they captivate us and how they continue to evolve.

Romance Fiction Tropes we love1. Enemies to Lovers
The banter. The tension. The moments of “I loathe you” that slowly morph into “I’d die for you.” This trope sizzles because it’s emotional whiplash in the best possible way. This is an all-time classic trope that is also a huge reader favorite.
Why we love it:  Watching characters let go of grudges and fall into something real gives us all the butterflies.2. Friends to Lovers
Soft, sweet, and deeply satisfying, this one reminds us that the strongest romances often start with friendship. The slow shift from platonic to romantic relationships is such a joy to read… and to write.
Why we love it: The slow-burn realization that love’s been there all along? Pure magic.3. Fake Relationship
They agree to pretend—maybe to get through a wedding, dodge nosy family, or help someone save face. But it turns real, fast. I love the thin line that exists between the fake and the real, especially when the reader figures it out before the hero and heroine!
Why we love it: The tension, the fake PDA that suddenly doesn’t feel so fake… it’s a trope that brings both swoon and sparkle.4. Second Chance Romance
Love lost. Then found again. This one tugs at every heartstring. I tend to write a lot of second chance romances because I love them so much. I love stories that try to tempt fate, and second chance heroes and heroines tend to laugh in fate’s face… until fate takes control and gives them a story they can’t escape.
Why we love it: There’s something achingly beautiful about forgiveness, growth, and rediscovering love when the timing is finally right.5. Forced Proximity
Trapped in a cabin during a snowstorm. Assigned to the same inn renovation. Partnered up on a stakeout. The setup varies, but the sparks are guaranteed. These stories aren’t just about staying together for a short period of time, it’s about the intimacy and tension these romances offer that make them so addicting.
Why we love it:  With nowhere to run, characters are forced to confront their feelings—and we get a front-row seat to the fireworks.6. Grumpy Meets Sunshine
One is broody, gruff, and emotionally constipated. The other? A ray of chaotic, cheerful light. Sparks ensue. And I have to add that I recently wrote a novella where the heroine is the grumpy one and the hero is the one who loves life. It’s called Luke’s Last Hot Summer and it’s found in the Finding Forever wedding romance anthology.
Why we love it:  Watching the grump melt under the warmth of sunshine is one of the greatest joys in romance.7. Forbidden Love
Whether it’s rival families, feuding best friends, or an inconvenient vow, something is standing in their way—and that something makes the romance even more delicious. The thing I love about this trope is that it depends upon external pressures to keep the hero and heroine apart. And when two people can push against these pressures, and find their HEA, readers know their love is meant to last forever. Again, with another shameless plug for my own books, my romantic suspense novel Every Deep Desire is a retelling (and redemption) of Romeo and Juliet. That’s how much I love this trope!
Why we love it: The yearning. The secrecy. The courage to love anyway.8. Marriage of Convenience
They say “I do” for practical reasons—inheritance, visa, mutual gain. But hearts don’t play by contract. The thing I love about this trope is that it is no longer just found in historical romances. It’s now found in contemporary romances, including the next book in my Deadly Force Series, A Promise at Midnight (coming soon).
Why we love it:  The journey from obligation to real, deep love is always a joy to witness.9. Secret Identity
A hidden past, an assumed name, or a job undercover… the reveal is coming, and we can’t look away. These kinds of stories can be found in historical romances (The Phantom of the Opera), contemporary romances (secret billionaires!), paranormal romances (any vampire novel you can think of), as well as other genres such as romantasy and mafia romances. These are hugely popular with readers and are some of my favorite stories to read and write.
Why we love it: The tension and high stakes make the eventual truth—and acceptance—even more satisfying.10. Found Family
The best romances often come with a side of community—a ragtag group of misfits, neighbors, coworkers, or friends who become something more. This trope can also be the basis for a single book as well as entire series (think The Black Dagger Brotherhood, Reapers MC, and Virgin River, just to name a few out of many). Readers love the larger casts, intertwining stories, and the settings (like small towns, small businesses, etc) that remind them of home. My Kingsmill Courtships series is based on this trope, as is my Deadly Force series.
Why we love it: It reminds us that love isn’t just romantic—it’s about connection, belonging, and choosing each other.BONUS: Secret Baby
Oh yes. You knew it was coming. The twist that launches a thousand page-turns. Maybe she had to run. Maybe she didn’t know how to tell him. Maybe he’s been searching for them all along. Whatever the backstory, when that surprise child shows up, hearts break—and heal—all over again. And I happen to be writing one of these right now!
Why we love it: Because nothing says high stakes like the revelation that your past love… is now a parent. Cue redemption, reconciliation, and baby giggles at the epilogue.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Mint Juleps

Today is Mint Julep Day!

What is a Mint Julep? In case you don’t know, it’s one of the South’s most iconic cocktails. With its refreshing blend of bourbon, sugar, mint, and crushed ice, the mint julep has become a symbol of Southern hospitality. The origins of the mint julep trace back to the 18th century, beginning as a medicinal tonic prescribed for upset stomachs. By the early 1800s, it had become a popular morning drink among Virginian farmers. Instead of coffee, they started the day with a bracing julep, served in a silver cup to keep it cool.

Its association with Kentucky and the Derby came later when, in 1938, the Kentucky Derby made the mint julep its official drink. Today, nearly 120,000 juleps are served during Derby weekend at Churchill Downs. Traditionally served in a chilled silver or pewter cup, the drink remains a symbol of elegance and celebration. Whether you’re sipping it on a porch swing or raising a toast at the races, the mint julep is a refreshing drink, perfect for the coming heat of summer. And don’t forget to add a sprig of fresh mint from your garden.

[image error] PrintThe Hungry {Romance} Writer: Mint JulepsThis is super simple to make, and if you don't have any simple syrup I added the recipe below. It's just made with sugar and water. Once you have the simple syrup, all you need is your favorite bourbon and ice. Course DrinksKeyword cocktailsPrep Time 2 minutes minutesServings 1Ingredients1/2 ounce simple syrupMint leaves plus a sprig for garnish2 ounce bourbonCrushed iceInstructionsIn a large glass, pour in the simple syrup and add the mint leaves. With the back of a spoon, muddle the mint leaves until they're broken and the mint oils have been released and you can smell them. Pour in the bourbon and stir. Fill the glass with crushed ice. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig. If you don't have any simple syrup, here is a simple recipe: In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring 3/4 cup sugar and 3/4 cup of filtered water to a boil. Then reduce the heat to medium low and stir constantly until the sugar is dissolved. This will take 3-4 minutes. Set aside. Store unused syrup in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Prepping for Summer

Summer doesn’t just sneak up while I’m planting my tomato plants. It blazes in with long days, hot nights, and a whirlwind of plans, projects, and maybe a few popsicles. Although I’m still enjoying Spring, the practical planner in me is already thinking about how to handle the unique demands of summer. Whether you’re juggling kids on school break, trying to keep your home cool and comfy, planning a trip or two (or many), or managing a business during peak season (or a summer lull), a little prep can go a long way.

So before the season kicks into high gear, let’s get everything ready: your home, your family, and your business.

✨ How to Prepare for Summer🏡 1. Getting Your Home Ready for Summer

Your home should be your cool, welcoming retreat in the heat of summer. Here’s how to prepare it—functionally and aesthetically—for the warmer months ahead.

✅ Start with comfort and maintenance:Service your air conditioning before it breaks during the hottest week of the year. Clean or replace filters, and test the system to ensure it’s running efficiently.Switch out seasonal bedding and curtains. Lightweight cottons and linens are more breathable than heavy winter fabrics. Lighter-colored window treatments can reflect heat and keep rooms cooler.Check windows and doors for leaks that could let in hot air and let out cold air (and run up your electric bill).Power wash patios, porches, and siding to clear away winter grime.Inspect outdoor furniture for damage, and clean cushions or buy new covers.Clean and inspect the grill. It’s time to shine as queen (or king) of the BBQ!Stock up on pest control supplies. Ant traps, Japanese beetle bags, citronella candles, mosquito zappers. It’s bug season, after all.🎨 Add some seasonal flair:Swap out throw pillows, doormats, and candles for more summery styles. Think beachy blues, tropical prints, or bold citrus colors.Create a “summer survival basket” by the front door with sunscreen, bug spray, reusable water bottles, and sunglasses. Start a small herb garden  or grow veggies in containers near your porch or kitchen window. Fresh basil makes everything taste like summer.Build a summer TBR pile for the entire family. Collect all the summer-y books that you and your family want to read this summer and keep them in a convenient place so you’ll reach for a book before reaching for your phone.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 2. Preparing Your Family for Summer Break

Whether your summer involves kids home from school, vacations, or just trying to slow down and enjoy longer evenings, getting ahead of the chaos will help you make the most of it.

🛠 Get logistics out of the way early:Schedule physicals and dentist appointments before everyone else is trying to do the same. Many colleges, camps, and sports programs require updated medical forms and maybe even some updated vaccines. And you may want to check on your own tetanus shot to make sure it’s up-to-date.Create a master summer calendar. Use a shared app or a big wall calendar to track camps, trips, events, and babysitter coverage. Restock your first-aid kits  (for both home and car) with bandages, allergy meds, after-sun cream, and tweezers (you’ll thank yourself after the first bee sting). Prep the car for summer travel. Driving during there summer has its own special requirements. I’ve linked to a post to help you prep the car before you leave the house.🌞 Make room for fun and memories:Build a summer bucket list as a family. Include silly, simple ideas like “eat dinner on a blanket in the backyard” or “make homemade popsicles.”Create a boredom box filled with puzzles, coloring books, scavenger hunt cards, and small surprises. Pull it out when kids say the dreaded “I’m bored.”Sign up for your local library’s summer reading program. Many offer prizes, themed events, and community connections.Designate a summer chores chart. This keeps kids involved and adds structure to lazy days.Plan a day to hike in a local or national park.Go fishing! If you live near a lake, stream, river, or ocean, grab a pole and see what you can catch. Just remember to take a photo so your family believes you.Rent an inflatable movie screen and have family movie night outside.💼 3. Getting Your Business Ready for the Season

Whether your business heats up or cools down during the summer, it’s the perfect time to reflect, refresh, and refocus.

📊 Operational check-in:Review your mid-year goals. Where are you on revenue, projects, client load, or engagement? Summer is an ideal time to pivot or push forward.Adjust summer hours or staffing if needed. If your clients or team take extended time off, plan accordingly.Update your website and social media. Make sure summer promotions, operating hours, and contact info are current.Tidy up your workspace. Clutter tends to accumulate during busy months. Clear it now for a fresh mental reset.🌻 Add summer energy:Plan a small summer promotion: a seasonal product, discount, or giveaway can increase visibility and engagement.Host a team event. A casual BBQ, outdoor coffee meeting, or bring-your-pet-to-work day lightens the mood.Offer seasonal perks like iced coffee in the office, casual Fridays, or summer Fridays off.🌟 Bonus Tips to Level-Up Your Summer PrepCreate a “go bag” in your car with towels, bathing suits, flip-flops, water, and snacks so you’re ready for impromptu pool days or road trips.Make a summer playlist for everything from cleaning the house to beach days.Stock the freezer with popsicles, ice packs, and quick dinner options for those too-hot-to-cook nights.Consider a digital detox weekend to reset your mind and help your family reconnect.✨ Final Thoughts

Summer is more than just a season. Summer requires a shift in mindset. It’s longer days, slower mornings, and space to breathe a little deeper. By getting ahead with thoughtful prep, you set the stage to enjoy it all… without the stress.

So dust off your flip-flops, grab a lemonade, and get ready. You’ve got this.

Sarah Munro’s Summer Body Oil

I dread the hot weather that’s coming. Despite the humidity, my skin dries out from all the sunscreen, salt water, and chlorinated pool water. So this time of year, I like to use body oil after a bath or a swim. I love this recipe in particular, with the scents of lavender, hibiscus, and rose, and it works well on both skin and hair. While I can buy sunflower oil at my grocery store, I prefer to get my organic flowers and natural herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs.

For those of you new to this series, Sarah Munro, the heroine in ONE DARK WISH, the second book in the Deadly Force series, is an 18th century historian who inherited a collection of colonial-era herbal and homeopathic remedies. And, in this blog space, I’ve been sharing her recipes with you all. I’m adding this recipe to this collection because lavender, hibiscus, and rose flowers have cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. Their scents are also known to promote sleep and alleviate anxiety.

Note: I am not an affiliate of Mountain Rose Herbs. I just love their website and buy most of my herbs and other special ingredients from them.

Ingredients:

1 ounce  hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) flowers1 ounce lavender (Lavandula spp.) flowers1 ounce rose (Rosa spp.) flowers6 ounces of sunflower oil8 ounces of filtered waterDirections for Summer Body OilIn a saucepan over medium heat, bring the water to a boil.Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the flowers/herbs. Cover and let steep for 1-2 hours.Stir in the oil and heat the mixture over medium heat just until the oil and water begin to boil. Immediately reduce the heat to low and allow to simmer uncovered.Stir the mixture constantly so the herbs don’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Simmer and stir until the water is completely evaporated and only the herbs and oil are left in the pan. You may see tiny bubbles (you don’t want to see any large bubbles). If you hold a dry glass over the pot you should see no more condensation. Once all the water has evaporated, strain the herbs from the oil using a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth over a glass or pyrex bowl. You should have 4-6 ounces of liquified oil left. If you have more than 6 ounces, simmer again until all the water is evaporated. Pour the oil in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store in a cool, dark cupboard and use daily.Apply to your skin and hair daily, or as frequently as you prefer. IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER ABOUT WILD PLANTS, FORAGING , AND MAKING HERBAL REMEDIES:
