First Line Friday #77
Today is the day before I leave for our family vacation. I can hardly wait. We will be enjoying some relaxation in the northern part of Michigan. Do you have a family vacation planned this year? Where will you go?
Today, on First Line Friday I am sharing a sweet novella I read three years ago. It’s by one of my favorite authors, Karen Witemeyer. The novel is called The Husband Maneuver. If you like reading novels on Kindle, it is currently only $1.99!

Absorbed in the book she held, Marietta Hawkins nibbled on her lower lip and burrowed more deeply into the hay piled near the loft window.
Marietta is in love with Daniel, her father’s foreman. She’s pretty certain he’s interested in her too, but he’s never spoken a word about it to her. She knew her father had forbidden any of his ranch hands from showing any romantic interest in his daughter or they would be fired. Marietta tries to take matters into her own hands, but Daniel promised her father he’d abide by his rules. Daniel is not a man to go back on a promise.
Now it’s your turn. First Line Friday is something every reader can participate in. Pick up a book near you. Type the first line in the comments, along with the title of the book and the author. Writing the Book is Just the Beginning
There are many excellent writers whose books are impossible to find. Their writing is flawless and their skill impressive, but their ability to market is insufficient or nonexistent. Writing the book is just the beginning. If an author does not market his book well, very few people will ever discover it. Therefore, if you have written something worth reading, it is your responsibility to learn how to market your book.
Zig Ziglar said, “If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.”

There are countless resources on the internet where you can begin to learn about marketing, both online and face-to-face. It is your responsibility to educate yourself. Just like you had to learn to write and edit, you must take the final step and learn how to market.
I’m certainly no expert, but I am learning about marketing because I believe I have books that are worth reading. They are Christian historical fiction/romance. The reader of my novels will come away encouraged and hopeful about God’s ability and interest to bring His children through the difficult things in life. It also delightfully entertains and many find it hard to put down. It’s the kind of book I like to read, so I think others will enjoy it. But no one will ever hear about it if I don’t market it.
One of my favorite social media to market in is Twitter. Facebook was great until about a year ago when Facebook made lots of changes. I am not getting the same results as before. But I’m not quite ready to throw in the towel yet. Currently, I’m listening to videos by Mark Dawson from Great Brittain. He has reached a six-figure income using Facebook ads, but he also admits that the changes on Facebook have affected his profit. I’ve advertised twice on Pinterest with decent results, so that’s another good option. Currently, I get the best results from advertising on Amazon. It’s more expensive than social media, but the results have made it worth the investment.
I will be sharing my experience with marketing my books at our August 10th ACFW Great Lakes Region meeting in Grand Haven, MI. You do not need to be a member of ACFW to attend this event. If you are a writer and would like to join us, please contact me and I will be happy to share the details with you. Space is limited since we are meeting at a restaurant, so contact me ASAP if you think you’d like to attend.
I’m not a marketing expert. I’m a pastor’s wife, a mother of grown children, and a grandmother who has written two books and marketed them online. If I can get good results from my efforts, so can you. I will be sharing what I have learned and what has worked best for me so far. This will be a time to encourage you as a writer that it is possible to be a great writer and a great marketer. Sometimes it’s trial and error, but you do learn a lot in the process and it’s lots of fun to see your royalties go up.

First Line Friday #76
The novel I’m sharing this week is the first book in a wonderful series I read several years ago. It’s worth mentioning to all my followers who love Christian Historical Fiction as much as I do. This series is worth your time to read it. It will take you on an unforgettable adventure and bless your heart in the process.
The first book is called Maire (The Fires of Gleannmara Book 1) by Linda Windsor. Once you finish this one, I think you will be anxious to get the remaining two books in this series. It takes place in Ireland.

Growling with battle fury, Rowan of Emrys wrenched his sword from the rib cage of the tattooed barbarian.
The first line sounds gruesome, doesn’t it? But trust me, this series is worth reading. Following is the description from the back cover of the book so you can see for yourself what the story is about:
A fanciful, romantic tale of passion and faith that invites readers to the “God-graced mountains and plains” of Ireland. Maire, Gleannmara’s warrior queen, finds her fierce heart is gentled when she takes a reformed mercenary — a Christian, no less — as hostage during a raid. At first, she wonders what kind of God would make a fine warrior like Rowan of Emerys such a coward. But as she comes to know Rowan and witnesses the force of his beliefs, she learns that meekness and humility to the one true God are stronger than any blade of steel. And in the process, Maire discovers the transforming power of love and faith.
