The feature also spawned a short lived ABC 1987 TV series, called Sable. Two pilots were actually produced by ABC and The Taft Entertainment Company, the first starring Gene Simmons of KISS fame. That episode was scrapped (all except one dark, pudgy-bellied shot of Sable) and a new pilot was filmed with relative newcomer Lewis Van Bergen. Seven episodes were filmed. The aired pilot also included Lara Flynn Boyle, as a kidnap victim, in her first acting role.

“Dallas Morning News Publisher and CEO James Moroney went on the record stating that Amazon was demanding 70% of subscription revenues during Wednesday’s U.S. Senate subcommittee meeting on the future of newspapers. (Paidcontent found this link to CSPAN’s coverage of the event.) What’s more, Amazon is demanding that newspapers sign over all electronic distribution rights to their content on devices other than the Kindle.”

Though two Japanese live-action versions have seen brief theatrical releases in the US prior to appearing on DVD, Death Note will be getting a fully Westernized film treatment, as Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the manga series, this according to Variety. (via Newsarama.com : Warner Bros. to Produce Death Note Film)

I really think this is too bad. The Japanese films are really great, but I guess they don’t star Shia LaBouf or some other jackass like that…

“One thing you’ll notice is the high number of graphic titles on our list this year — no less than 4 comics made it onto our Top 10 for 2008. That’s pretty significant, and it’s a clear indication not only of the increased exposure of comics and graphic novels, but also of their quality.”

“How did BYD get so far ahead?” Warren Buffett asked Wang, speaking through a translator. “Our company is built on technological know-how,” Wang answered. Wary as always of a technology play, Buffett asked how BYD would sustain its lead. “We’ll never, never rest,” Wang replied.

Buffett may not understand batteries or cars, or Mandarin for that matter. Drive, however, is something that needs no translation.

“The company hasn’t yet decided whether it will enter the U.S. market, where the economics of electric cars are not as compelling. Sokol, who now sits on BYD’s board, says BYD could instead become a battery supplier to global automakers. Some Americans, though, are eager to do business with BYD. The day after Fortune’s visit to BYD, Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski arrived to test-drive an electric car and urge the company to import through the port of Portland.”
