Danger in “Appearing to be” over “Being”

The Heathen – 1.31.22

Are you pretending to be happy? How does this question make you feel?

This may sound bonkers, but I am proud of the time I woke up face-down-pants-down on my garage floor. Blood was everywhere. My car was still running in the front yard. Gas and whiskey fumes flooded the air.

Whatever I was pretending to be in life— it was killing me. This was the day I stopped faking my happiness.

There is great danger when you value “appearing to be” over “being”

“Appearing to be” is pretending to be something you are not, usually at the expense of yourself and the benefit of someone else. “Being” is honoring the truth within you no matter how messy it may be.

Here are some examples:

Doing what you “should” (appearing to be) vs. Doing what truly lights you up (being)Hiding behind your smile (appearing to be) vs. Smiling while you cry because you are sharing your truth and it feels relieving (being)Sharing filtered pictures to enhance your features or correct your blemishes (appearing to be) vs. Sharing your raw, natural beauty and helping others build confidence to do the same (being)Telling your friends that your broken relationship is thriving to avoid shame and judgment (appearing to be) vs. Communicating honestly with your partner, friends, and therapist about your hardships, thus creating opportunity for healing and growth (being)Resisting exercise or meditation because you are “too busy” (appearing to be) vs. Prioritizing self-care practices, thus enhancing all aspects of your life (being)Appearing to beBeingDoing what you “should”Doing what truly lights you upHiding behind your smile Smiling while you cry because you are sharing the truth (and it feels relieving)Sharing filtered pictures to enhance your features or correct your blemishesSharing your raw, natural beauty and helping others build confidence to do the sameTelling your friends that your broken relationship or marriage is thriving to avoid shame and judgmentCommunicating openly with your partner, friends, and therapist about your hardships to create new opportunities for healing and growthResisting exercise or meditation because you are “too busy”Prioritizing self-care practices thus enhancing all aspects of your life

“Appearing to be” is resistance. It feels easy in the moment but destroys you over time.

“Being” is the hardest work of all, but it bears eternal fruits. It removes the space between you and your truth.

Are you appearing to be, or are you being?

Be aware of the gremlins

“Appearing to be” is also an elusive trick of mASS media, corrupt politicians, and con-artists. These tricksters are predatory gremlins.

Their schemes may sound familiar:

“Act the part” even though you don’t enjoy it. “Do as you are told” even though you don’t want to. “Follow the rules” even though they only benefit someone else. “Be good” even though good and bad are completely subjective. “Behave” or endure shame and punishment…

As you strive to live in truth, be aware of the world that “appears to be.”

Choose to be a hot mess

What if you allow yourself to simply be you? What if you unleash the raw, hot mess of beauty and chaos within you?

Choosing to be (rather than appearing to be) sets you free.

Exploration keeps you free.

Creating removes the trap altogether.

Do you really have anything better to do?

Creative maniac quote & idea for you

“All that you see out in front of you is how you feel inside your head.” – Alan Watts

With this breath, you have an opportunity to invite more flowers, laughter, and love into your head and out into the world.

Take a moment to write down 3 ways you haven’t been entirely truthful to yourself and those around you. How will you make changes to start “being” rather than “appearing to be” in each of these 3 ways?

Don’t hesitate to make the necessary changes. Start now. Your future self is already twerking in celebration.

Weenie Dog Surprise: Do Good to Feel Good

The Heathen – 1.24.22

Do you remember playing Show and Tell in school when you were just a lil’ munchkin? It’s a game where everyone brings something they love to class and shares it as a surprise. Well…

Show and tell mania

When I was in 3rd grade, I stuffed my weenie dog Dexter into my backpack and took him to school for Show and Tell. My parents had no idea.

All the kids in my class shared their “surprises.” Then it was my turn.

As soon as Dexter busted out of the backpack, he took a massive shotgun dump all over the floor. Then, one girl saw the poo and started puking. Another boy saw her puke and also puked. My teacher was screaming. She had one of those 80s perms.

I still remember the smell, the panic, the confusion—the excitement.

That which you show and tell creates your reality

Everything we do affects our environment in both good and bad ways, creating the reality that we live within.

I loved the excitement in watching the mayhem unfold when the Dex-monster started launching his brownie missiles, but I sure didn’t love it so much once my parents found out…

My booty was toast. My classmates had show and tell PTSD for the rest of their days and refused to play with me.

What are you showing and telling to the world?

The energy you pour into the world fills your own cup, too.

The thoughts, ideas, and actions that you show and tell are shaping your environment, surroundings, and reality in real time.

What are you showing and telling to the world?

Do good to feel good

When you spread positive vibes, you grow positive vines that create a web of abundance around you.

Doing good within the world is what will make you feel good.

When you feel good, you are accomplishing the feeling of abundance. It has nothing to do with hustle, getting lucky, or valuing hard work over play.

Abundance is simply the Universe’s response to consistent thoughts and feelings of abundance.

Creative maniac quote & idea for you

“I want nothing. The purpose of my being is to serve others.”  – Sri Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji

Miracle of Love, a book compiled by Ram Dass, is full of stories about Neem Karoli Baba. Through these stories, I’ve learned that “being of service” doesn’t mean you have to labor and submit your energy to others, or buy fancy gifts and give them away, or drain yourself trying to please everyone else.

Being of service is simply helping others remember to laugh, love, dance, play, and feel good. We all forget. We all need reminders.

Remind someone you fancy to play today. Lead by example and show the way.

Thanks for reading “The Heathen.”

Resistance Gremlins

The Heathen – 1.17.22

This is about you.

You must destroy

This is your life. It can be anything you want it to be. Magic. Mystery. Chaos. Art.

But only if you create it and destroy all else.

The gremlins

There are gremlins in your life.

These gremlins exist to stop you from everything good. They are big, scary, hairy and ruthless. They eat your cookies and give you wedgies.

They manifest as resistance.

Inside of your mind

Resistance gremlins want you to believe that they live inside of your creative maniac mind. They don’t. They are elusive.

When they come to party in your brain, they show up as fear, anxiety, stress, procrastination, and hesitation.

They want you to think that you are the problem. You aren’t.

They are invaders. They are parasites. They feed off your life force energy.

You will stop them by

These gremlins can be stopped. They are weak. They are cowards.

You will stop them because you are stronger than them– because you are aware of their disguises.

They show up dressed in familiar costumes to try and fool you.

Facebook gremlins. Addiction gremlins. Smartphone gremlins. Traffic gremlins. Porn gremlins. Insecurity gremlins. Self-worth gremlins. Attachment gremlins. Fast food gremlins.

They have one mission: to stop you from creating.

Creating (like a maniac)

When you resist, you conform to the death of creativity— the death of yourself. When you create, you destroy resistance and its army of goons.

If you want a life of magic, mystery, chaos, and art… you must create it. Therefore, you must destroy resistance.

So… create like a fucking maniac. Burn the bridges that carry the army of gremlins into your mind.

No more hesitation. No more mindless scrolling. No more toxic people.

No more sacrificing your life force energy.

You are worth so much more.

Until the end of time

Luck is just the kinky love child of persistence meeting opportunity. When you persist, you fuck the gremlins hard. (Like 90's smut hard.)

So pound those gremlins and breed some luck. Create like your life depends on it.

It does.

Closing thoughts and *idea* for you

This past week I started a pottery class for the first time ever. It's crucial to keep expanding our minds and challenging our creative brains. I found myself deeply lost in the curiosity and excitement of the art— and I had no sense of time and space. There was nothing in my head about what I *should* be doing or the gremlins I *need* to be battling. My head was clear, focused, and direct.

What is something you love to do—that when you do it– you lose track of all time and space? Or what is something you are curious about that you haven’t tried yet?

Make time for it as soon as possible. Maybe today? Yea.

Creative maniac quote

“Each day, the professional understands, he will wake up facing the same demons, the same Resistance, the same self-sabotage, the same tendencies to shadow activities and amateurism that he has always faced. The difference is now he will not yield to those temptations.” – Steven Pressfield, Turning Pro

This post is heavily influenced by Pressfield. If you haven’t read his work, do it immediately.

Kiss the Mirror

Have you given yourself a kiss in the mirror today?— at least once—or twice, or maybe 69 times?

It’s not too late.

Self-love is the medicine that heals fear.

There is something powerful lurking within you

That “powerful something” is your inner creative maniac—the one that you have been terrified to let out and play. Power is scary.

By not expressing yourself physically, emotionally, or creatively…you are allowing energy to build up inside of your body and create blockages, fuckery, and even physical pain.

Energy wants to flow and transform. All creations are energy. You are the artist and gatekeeper.

What if you grant yourself permission to leap into the wild and mysterious creative rampages that await you?

What if you do this through self-love?

Self-love *destroys blockages* // You *discover your power*

When you love yourself, the blockage gremlins cower and run for their lives.

Your inner creative maniac begins to 360-slam-dunk on your “fear” from all directions using the superpowers that have been hibernating within your sexy mind, heart, body, gut, and private party parts.

You *unleash a fury of imagination and action*

As you begin to trust your inner child and powers again, your imagination will explode and weird things will probably happen.

You may find yourself sitting on your fear’s face like a world champion sumo wrestler instead of letting it suffocate your visions and dreams by sitting on yours.

You deserve to taste the rainbow elixirs of pure truth, creativity, and serenity— not fear-based sumo ass.

A simple reminder

This is a simple reminder to show up for your Muse.

The Muse is always present and waiting for you to show up as the creative savage that you are, raw and ready to fuck things up 1,000 times until one day: BOOM! You realize that each fuck-up was perfect from the start.

Are you acknowledging the possibility?

What if you let go of all expectations and simply allow yourself to be creative and play?

What if you kiss the mirror?

It’s never about the destination. It’s always about experiencing the journey.

You *create* and the trumpets *sound*

When you create: The trumpets sound. The confetti explodes. The cosmos of love blows a kiss.

Pick up that fucking pencil and scribble some madness onto something…anything.

Idea for you

We all die. Find ways to feel good about who you are and how you live. Eliminate all else.

It may help to create a list of what excites you and makes you feel good. Sometimes this is easiest by first making a list about what makes you feel bad and doesn’t excite you—then pair the opposites.

Play with your ideas. How can you surround yourself with more good stuff and eliminate the bad? Living within the good stuff makes it easier to love yourself.

Quote from another

“How good are you willing to let it get?” – Sarah Seidelmann

Sarah is a warm and mind-bending friend of mine— a total wizard of words and creativity. She has an epic animal spirit book called The Book of Beasties that I use almost daily.

Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.” The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”The following day his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad,” and the farmer responded, “Maybe.” The next day the conscription officers came around to conscript people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again all the neighbors came around and said, “Isn’t that great!” Again, he said, “Maybe.”The whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity, and it’s really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad — because you never know what will be the consequence of the misfortune; or, you never know what will be the consequences of good fortune.”
Nothing is really bad or good, it's all just the same dance. One cannot exist without the other. Together, they create a wholeness that gives life to all matter.In this episode, I explore thoughts around this story and others.The only thing “missing” from your life is the realization that nothing is “missing” from your life..fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-2{width:100% !important;margin-top : 0px;margin-bottom : 20px;}.fusion-builder-column-2 > .fusion-column-wrapper {padding-top : 0px !important;padding-right : 0px !important;margin-right : 1.92%;padding-bottom : 0px !important;padding-left : 0px !important;margin-left : 1.92%;}@media only screen and (max-width:1024px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-2{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-column-2 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-2{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-column-2 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}.fusion-body .fusion-flex-container.fusion-builder-row-3{ padding-top : 0px;margin-top : 0px;padding-right : 0px;padding-bottom : 0px;margin-bottom : 0px;padding-left : 0px;}Kinky Links From the Episode
