The Power of the Written Word

Is the pen truly mightier than the sword?

Words are powerful. They evoke emotions, stir us to action, share valuable insights, and ignite our imaginations. Words can build up, or tear down, encouragement or discourage, depending on how they are conveyed.

Writers know well the power of words. The way a passage is written can make all the difference as to whether readers will keep turning pages or set the book aside. A writer’s aim is to captivate readers with words that penetrate the mind and touch the heart. We do this by stirring readers’ senses through sights, sounds, smells, and by weaving spiritual awakenings into the lives of our characters.

But there is one Book that’s words are far more powerful and penetrating than any earthly author could dare to dream. In my morning devotion, I was struck by this verse from the book of Hebrews:

“For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

What an image of power. The living Word of God can change the hardest heart and bring us to our knees. It holds both the power to convict and to restore.

In my novel, Under This Same Sky, Becky Hollister struggles with her faith after enduring hardship and loss. Initially, she blames God for her struggles. It isn’t until her heart is softened through the reassurance of Scripture that she finds peace and understanding.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

We’ve all struggled in our faith at times. We all need words of comfort and conviction.

~ What passage of Scripture speaks powerful words of hope and reassurance into your heart when you’re facing difficulties?

Hope in Every Season of Life

Today, I’m happy to have fellow MRP author, Sara Foust as my guest. She shares a wonderful message of Hope that I know you’ll be blessed by as much as I was. There’s also a Giveaway (US addresses only) ~ a print copy of her recent release, Camp Hope. So stick around and leave a message to unlock several chances to win!

I have been in a season of life that is incredibly challenging. God has given us “big” jobs to do for Him in the past. We became parents to three beautiful girls. We’ve been foster parents. Started homeschooling. I quit my “guaranteed money” job to write full-time. We adopted our foster children. I went on a 2-week mission trip to the Philippines.

But this last calling He has given us, has almost broken my resolve. When our son received his autism diagnosis in late May at the age of 2 ½, though I saw it coming, saying it out loud for the first time was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. He is the same child he has always been, but for the first time I started wondering what his future would be like. Would he ever be able to live independently? Will he ever be able to love and have a wife? A family? Will he ever understand what is safe and what isn’t (trust me, this is a big issue with a toddler and an even bigger one with an autistic toddler!).

I’ve learned along the way that if I utter the words, “I will never do that,” God has a way of making that exactly what happens in my life. But when I asked Him to please not send us an autistic foster child, I thought He would respect that request. He didn’t, and at first I wondered why. Why us, Lord? Why me, Lord? Isn’t this a dangerous pitfall to get into! I am so very thankful that God has shown me over the last few months just how wonderful our little awesome autism boy is. He is intelligent, affectionate (yay!), and adorable. And he has taught me a lot about myself in the few years we’ve been privileged to be his parents.

I am tough. I am resourceful. I am capable of learning new tricks, even though this dog gets older every day. I am patient (bet you never thought you’d hear that, Dad!). And, most importantly of all, I’ve leaned harder on my hope in God than ever before. He is the one thing that gets me through the tough days and helps me take those calming breaths that I need to keep going.

In my newest novel, Amy has taken in her first foster child, Mattie. When Mattie is kidnapped, Amy can’t sit idly by and decides to take off on horseback into the wilderness of Royal Blue, Tennessee. She has lived most of her life doubting that there is any point in being hopeful, so she can’t rely on the police or prayers to bring Mattie home. She feels like God left her a long time ago, and she doesn’t think He cares enough to help her heal from the scars of her traumatic childhood. Oh how wrong she is! It was a privilege to write a character struggling with her hope in God, because it allowed me to weave in kernels of truth I’ve discovered in my life. God never leaves us nor forsakes us. And no matter how many “why” questions there are, there is always hope in Him and His good plan for us. I hope (see what I did there?) my readers will see this truth while enjoying the second story in the Love, Hope, and Faith Series, Camp Hope.

Engraved on the Heart ~ My Review

A wonderful debut novel by author Tara Johnson! This story lands readers right at the start of the Civil War and takes them through the first year. Set in Savannah, Georgia, Engraved on the Heart, takes us into the heart of the deep south with all its grandeur. There we meet Keziah Montgomery, a shy yet beautiful young lady with an illness that continues to raise its ugly head at the most inopportune moments, bringing embarrassment on her family.

When an old childhood friend, Micah Greyson, now a doctor, comes to her aid, old feelings are quickly rekindled. With the war erupting all around, life becomes difficult for both Keziah and Micah. Though their paths continue to cross and they find themselves steeped in a fight for freedom away from the noise of guns and battle, but nearly as dangerous.

I was immediately drawn to both Micah and Keziah, to their strengths and weaknesses as well as their devotion to their benevolent cause and to each other. I love characters I can relate to and enjoy experiencing the journey with.

The author does a splendid job of capturing the tension and emotions of the times. Brace yourself for lots of twists and turns in this compelling Civil War love story with an ending that truly satisfies.

A Heart Like Yours

One of my favorite parts in developing my novel characters is giving them a challenge or flaw to overcome, some area of their heart that needs the Lord’s touch to make whole. Readers can relate to characters who struggle through hardships and imperfections because life is filled with challenges.

That’s one of the reasons I love the story of King David in the Bible. He’s called a “man after God’s own heart”. But why? What was it about David that earned him such an honored title? After all, he was merely a shepherd boy, viewed by his older brothers as a pesky, interfering younger brother until he took on Goliath and wound up living in the king’s palace!

Even then, David’s life wasn’t free of troubles. He had a jealous king on his tail for more than a decade. Two of his sons tried to dethrone him. He had an unloving wife and a close friend who was killed in the prime of his life. And the list goes on.

David made some huge blunders along the way–and paid for them dearly. He was a murderer, an adulterer, and a liar. So in all of this mess, how was it David caught the Lord’s attention and deemed him a man after His own heart?

I’m convinced it was because although far from perfect, no matter what difficulty David faced or how great of sin he committed, he never lost his desire to please God. When he sinned, he repented wholeheartedly. When he was troubled, he looked to God for guidance. And He never ceased to give God the glory when he enjoyed success.

In the psalms, we read David’s prayers of praise, thanksgiving, grief, and repentance. The Lord infiltrated every aspect of his life, his heart, his soul. If we want to walk closely with the Lord, we too need to include Him in everything we do. Wholehearted devotion to God is a daily commitment, one that takes a lifetime to achieve. May each of us strive to become people after God’s own heart!

When do you feel closest to God? I’d love to hear your experience!

Like Iron Sharpening Iron

One of our greatest assets as people is the relationships we build. God didn’t create us to be loners. Even those of us who are introverts need the support and encouragement of friends and family. But there is another purpose the Lord had in mind when He instituted relationships–He intended us to help each other grow.

Along with God’s Word, relationships are the catalyst that brings about spiritual growth. Proverbs 27:17 says it well, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Often that “sharpening” can be unpleasant, even painful. Words can hurt, but if said in a spirit of love, they can also heal and foster growth.

In my novel, Under Prairie Skies, Chad and Charlotte speak some hard truths to each other, ones that initially seemed offensive. But after the characters thought through those words and allowed God to do a work on their hearts, their relationship deepened, along with their relationship to the Lord.

Love is the key. When we see a fellow Christian, spouse, child, or family member who is struggling, we should first be certain we hold that person’s trust and pray for wisdom and discernment. Then, if we sense the Holy Spirit nudging us to speak, we have the obligation to do so in a loving, caring way.

As you go about your week this week, look for opportunities to bolster someone’s faith, whether it be an encouraging word or a gentle nudge in the right direction. We were made for fellowship with God and with each other. None of us are perfect. Each day, we need to humbly ask the Lord to show us areas we need to change in ourselves and be willing to accept the sharpening of others when the need arises.

~ When have you grown through someone’s loving, poignant words?

Interview + Giveaway with Peggy Phifer

Today I’m pleased to welcome author Peg Phifer to Sowing Seeds of Hope. She has an interesting writing journey to share along with a PRINT (US ONLY) or E-BOOK GIVEAWAY (winner’s choice) of her newest release, Whispering Hope. Be sure to stick around to the end of the blog to enter!

It’s great to have you here, Peg. How long have you been writing?

I’m a late bloomer. I didn’t start writing until age 50. Many ideas floated around in my head and I had many starts and stops, discarding one after the other, yet never giving up … though I wanted to, too many times to count. Yet I persisted. I could not not write, if that makes any sense. But it took me over 20 years before I got my first novel published.

As an author myself, I completely understand that. What is your favorite part of the writing process?

There’s no greater feeling of accomplishment than writing THE END. But to be honest, my favorite part is re-writing. I’ve heard that’s the part of the process that many writers hate. It may sound crazy, but I really enjoy it.

Very interesting that you enjoy editing. You’re right. Many dislike that part. How similar are you to your heroines?

Not at all. According to the Briggs-Myers test I took a while ago, I’m over 80% introvert. I always knew I was but was surprised to see that high of a percentage. Who wants to read about introverted heroines? On the other hand, maybe I should. Who could write one better? Anyway, my heroines are fun and funny, strong without being aggressive, yet vulnerable.

I’m an introvert as well. I think writing is a way for us introverts to release our inner lion. LOL! If you could travel to any time or place, where/when would it be? Why?

I love this question. Each time I’m asked I come up with something different. A dream getaway would be a Mediterranean cruise stopping at all ports of call, seeing all the sites to be seen, including Israel. I’d love to walk where Jesus walked. Other than that, I’d love to visit England, where my ancestors came from. Scotland and Ireland, mainly. I’d love to write a book in that setting … maybe historical.

That sounds wonderful! Do you have a favorite character in your novels? If so, why?

For Whispering Hope, my recent release, I have to say my favorite character would be Ginny. She’s a simple country girl caught up in a world she never knew existed. Yet she faces everything that’s thrown at her with strength she wasn’t aware she had. My second favorite in this same story, would be Rance. For some reason I really like writing male characters, and Rance was no exception.

I enjoy writing the male perspective as well. Is research something you enjoy? To how much of an extent to you go to find answers?

I love research. Whispering Hope was great fun to search out the details of 1930 during Prohibition, a time in our history that has fascinated me. I bought a large number of books about the era. Also a DVE PBS Ken Burns show about everything from the Volstead Act, bootlegging, Al Capone, and all that. And I burned up hours of Google search, printing out articles, old pictures and maps to guide me … you name it.

That’s awesome. Thanks for joining us, Peg!

Author Peggy Blann Phifer, a retired executive assistant after twenty-one years in the Electrical Wholesale Industry, lives in the ‘boonies’ of NW Wisconsin. A late bloomer, Peg didn’t start taking writing seriously until age fifty.

Her debut novel, To See the Sun, a contemporary romantic suspense, released in January 2012. A second novel, Somehow, Christmas Will Come, contemporary women’s fiction with a touch of romance and mystery, released in November 2014, revised and re-released in late 2015. A new work titled Whispering Hope, an historical romantic suspense, set during the years of Prohibition, released in early May, 2018. Her work has also appeared in numerous anthologies over the past five years.

Peg is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers. When she’s not writing, Peg enjoys reading, blogging, and sharing her home with her daughter, son-in-law, and a Border Collie mix dog named Rocky.

Back cover blurb:

1930 Chicago is no place for a Wisconsin country girl.

Virginia Hopewell visits her cousin in Chicago and gets caught up in a deadly gangster shooting at a speakeasy, barely escaping with her life. After learning of the tragic death of her father, brother, and sister-in-law, Ginny returns to Wisconsin and convinces her mother to reopen the resort her father had closed after losing everything in the stock market crash in 1929.

Ransom Blake, an agent with the Chicago Bureau of Prohibition, had been at the same speakeasy acting on a tip about the shooting. Rance is charged with finding the gangster responsible. He and his team are sent to Wisconsin where the man was reported being seen, and to investigate how illegal liquor from Canada is making its way to Chicago. With the opening of Whispering Hope Resort, Rance registers as a guest and comes face to face with the lovely redhead he’d briefly encountered at the speakeasy during the shooting.

Wings of Freedom ~ A Step Back in Time to World War II

I love history. And though I write inspirational prairie romance novels, a recent venture has me hoping the Lord gives me a novel story set during World War II.

This past week while working in a shed at our farm, my husband heard a different sounding plane and went outside to investigate. He looked up to see not one, but two World War II planes flying overhead. He quickly called me at home (three miles away) to see if I had seen them, which unfortunately I hadn’t.

I decided to google WW II planes in our state and found that four restored WW II planes called the Wings of Freedom were on tour at an airport just over an hour’s drive away. It didn’t take long for us to decide to plan a quick trip to see them.

Now, I don’t generally like the term “cool”, but that’s exactly what these planes were “COOL!” We were able to walk through (in some instances squeeze through) both a B-17 and a B-24 Bomber.

WW II B-17 Bomber

The interior was every bit as fascinating as the exterior, with lots of gizmos and gadgets, and challenging-to-maneuver entries and exits.

B-17 Cockpit

B-17 rear gunner post

B-24 Bomber

This is the only flyable B-24 in the world. It was destined for the junk heap, until a group called the Collings Foundation took it “under their wing” and restored it. A list of all those who served on this aircraft is posted on the side of the plane. It flew 130 missions without a crew member being lost or injured. Amazing!

Wing spans were an incredible 110 feet in length!

B-24 Cockpit

Lower gunner compartment

The smallest of the 10 crew members got the job of being the lower gunman due to the cramped space inside the compartment. Unfortunate for those who were claustrophobic!

B-25 Liberator

We also saw a B-25 Liberator and a P-51 Mustang. These two planes were available for rides at the meager cost of $450 per half-hour!! Needless to say, we admired them from afar. But then, it costs $4000 to keep all 4 planes in the air each hour of flight! These were the two planes my husband witnessed flying over our farm. Somehow, he missed the larger two. And I missed all four! So thankful we had the opportunity to tour them and even watch them take off for their next destination!

P-51 Mustang

While it’s sobering to recall the purpose for these incredible machines was to drop bombs on towns and people during the war, it is also exhilarating to know that these very aircrafts carried the men, and possibly women, who fought to retain our freedoms in this and other nations. God bless them for their sacrifice!

**I hope you’ve enjoyed this detour from my usual posts and were as fascinated by these historic planes as I’ve been. Find out more about them and The Collings Foundation HERE.

A Noble Masquerade ~ My Review

Today, I’m revisiting one of my favorite historical novels, A Noble Masquerade, by Kristi Ann Hunter. This was my first introduction to this author’s work, and it quickly put her on my Authors-to-Read List. Though it released in 2015, if you let this Book One in the Hawthorne House Series slip by, you’ve missed a fun read!

I instantly took to Lady Miranda Hawthorne and her non-conventional ways. A sort of tomboy of her day, Miranda’s distaste for the frivolous ways of social gatherings threaten to leave her a spinster. Fascinated with stories of her brother’s schoolmate, a duke, which she has never met, she finds herself pouring her deepest thoughts into letters to him, never intending them to be sent.

Mystery shrouds her brother’s new butler, a man with whom Miranda finds a growing fascination. But when he discovers her letters and mails one to the duke, Miranda finds herself In the midst of an unlikely romantic triangle and her first true adventure.

This is a fun-filled read with numerous plot twists that kept me flipping pages. I loved the intrigue and the vivid characters in this regency romance. The characters nearly leaped off the pages drawing me into the events of the story. This is a book I could easily read again and again. Its plot is fun, fresh, and thoroughly inviting.

Ms. Hunter has a way of pulling you into the internal thoughts of the characters and making you a part of the story. I’ve also read Book Two in this series, An Elegant Façade, with equal enthusiasm.

10 Wise Sayings That Can Transform Your Life

Have you ever been struck by something profound? Some wise saying that really hit home with you? Recently, I’ve started compiling a list of these Words of Wisdom that can so easily be swept into the far recesses of my mind if I don’t visually keep them close at hand. Maybe that’s why the Lord said to write His words on the tablet of our hearts. (Proverbs 7: 3)

Some of the most wise sayings come straight from the wisest man of all time, King Solomon, who when the Lord granted him one request, asked for an understanding heart to govern his kingdom. When put into practice, these words of wisdom can transform a life.

WISDOM FROM THE WORD (RELATIONSHIPS)

KEEPING THE PEACE ~ “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” ~ Proverbs 15:1

A GIVING SPIRIT ~ “A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” ~ Proverbs 11:25

KIND WORDS ~ “He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.” ~ Proverbs 21:23

A HUMBLE HEART ~ “Let another praise you and not your own mouth.” ~ Proverbs 27:2

KEEPING YOUR COOL ~ “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” ~ James 1:19

WORDS OF WISDOM FOR LIFE (THOUGHTS TO CHEW ON)

~ If You Don’t Like the Fruit, Change the Root.

~ Comparison is the thief of Joy

~ Unforgiveness Can Destroy Your Life ~ Choose to Forgive

~ Do what you love

This 10th one is very near to my heart. I’ve kept it close at hand for over thirty years while I pursued my dream of becoming a published author. I fought many discouragements along the way, but the Lord was faithful to see my dream to fruition. I am so very thankful for His love and mercy.

FINAL WORD OF WISDOM

~ Go for your dreams. If God has put something on your heart, don’t hold back and don’t let anyone or anything discourage you. God has a plan for you.” ~ Gianna Jessen

Surrendering Your Heart

Surrendering our lives to God never comes easily. If you’re like me, you can give a situation to the Lord only to take it back again and again in a tug-of-war for control. I suppose that’s why I wrote about the theme of total surrender in my debut novel, Under This Same Sky.

My heroine, Becky Hollister, doesn’t willingly choose to surrender her will to God; instead, adverse circumstances compel her to choose between entrusting her life to Him or turning her back on her faith. It’s touch and go for a while. After enduring great suffering and loss, Becky questions how a loving God can allow such hurtful events to happen.

Under This Same Sky takes readers on a journey alongside Becky as she works through her resentment toward God and seeks to determine what His will for her might be. But just as in real life, it takes the wisdom of God’s word and the love of friends (and in Becky’s case, a godly man) to pull her through.

Becky’s story is a tale of friendship and love, but even more so, it’s a quest for wholeness and deeper understanding of a God who longs to hold the deepest desires of her heart. Fully surrendering to the Lord is something I believe we all struggle to achieve. I hope you’ll be encouraged by Becky’s story and the message of surrender it conveys.
