Where True Strength Lies

I’ve just recently finished launching my third book. Whew! I’ve been exhausted from all the whirlwind of activities. With all the guest blogs, launch parties, and book signings, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and consumed.

Now that things have slowed a bit and I’ve had a couple of weeks to reflect and renew my mind and spirit, I’m looking forward to delving into a new project. Starting a novel is both exciting and daunting. I know from experience now the time and effort that goes into not only the researching and writing of a historical novel, but also securing a publisher and launching a book.

My first three novels were under contract with a small press. Though I enjoyed my time there, I feel the Lord nudging me out of my comfortable nest. So with this fourth novel, I’m stepping out on faith, and seeking His wisdom and direction. I don’t know where He’ll lead, I only know He has called me to serve Him through my writing. To do that effectively, I need to stay connected to Him, the One who gives me strength.

In John 15:5 Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

When we attempt to do
things on our strength instead of the Lord’s, we are like a branch that withers
without the life-flow of the vine. Jesus is our life-flow. Our own strength
will fail us. It’s His strength that nourishes our souls and sustains us.

When we try to go it alone, we are destined to failure. Christ alone is our strength, the One who empowers us to face life’s challenges. We need to stay in His presence, allowing our minds to feed on the sustenance of His Word and calling upon His name in prayer.

As you go about this day, I encourage you to spend time with the Savior. It’s so tempting to go about our busy lives accomplishing all we can, but when we lose sight of our relationship with Christ, we become fretful and disoriented. Take a few moments throughout each day to drink in His presence and stay connected to the One who gives us life and strength!

Interview + Giveaway With Tamera Lynn Kraft

I’m happy to have fellow inspirational historical author Tamera Lynn Kraft with us this week sharing about her writing journey. Stick around until the end for a chance to win an e-book copy of her latest novel, Lost in the Storm!

What is your favorite part of the writing process, Tamera?

My favorite part is the research. I love
to research history, and I find my stories as I learn more about it. My biggest
problem is I’m so methodical in my research, it sometimes slows down my
writing.

I totally get that! I’m much the same when it comes to historical research! How have you sensed the Lord’s hand on your writing journey?

Too many times to count. Sometimes, I only realize the spiritual theme of a novel and how God has brought the pieces together after I’ve finished it.

I love how the Lord weaves messages into the story as I write! That’s what it’s all about! Besides writing, what other hobbies do you enjoy?

I love researching my ancestry. So far
I’ve gotten back to Viking Kings in 135 AD. To think that some of those the
disciples mentored, like Polycarp, were alive at the time. I also enjoy classic
movies and, of course, reading.

Oh, wow! How fascinating! How similar would you say you are to your heroines?

Every one of my heroines is different, yet every single one is a piece of me. For instance, America in Red Sky Over America was determined and courageous but was afraid of disappointing her family. This was so true of me when I was in my twenties. Lavena in Lost in the Storm is stubborn, independent, and opinionated and will fight to the death when it’s important. She also wants to help those who are ignored by society. She also is a part of me. I tend to be very stubborn when attacked about something I passionately believe in.

Is there a theme verse that holds this latest story together?

The theme in Lost in the Storm is
God’s mercy and forgiveness. At the beginning of the story, we meet Captain
Cage who needs God’s mercy and Lavena who needs to learn to forgive. Later, it
becomes obvious we all need God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Amen to that! What can we expect to see from you in the future?

In October, my next novel, Forks in the Road, will be released. This novel is a bit different than my others. It is a Western Young Adult with only a smidgen of romance and tells the story of Jed Jackson and his brothers after the war. Jed was a secondary character in my latest novel, Lost in the Storm. Then, I plan to write The Aftermath, Book 3 in the Ladies of Oberlin Series. The Aftermath is about Betsy and Nate’s problems after the war. These characters were also introduced in Lost in the Storm.

Sounds great! Thanks for sharing!

Award
Winning Author Tamera Lynn Kraft has always loved adventures and writes
Christian historical fiction set in America because there are so many
adventures in American history. She is married to the love of her life, has two
grown children, and lives in Akron, Ohio.

Tamera is the leader of a ministry called Revival Fire For Kids
where she mentors other children’s leaders, teaches workshops, and is a
children’s ministry consultant and children’s evangelist. She has curriculum
published and is a recipient of the 2007 National Children’s Leaders
Association Shepherd’s Cup for lifetime achievement in children’s ministry.

in a month or she’ll lose her job.

Captain Cage, the war hero, has a secret that
will destroy his military career and reputation. Now, a new journalist is
trying to get him to tell what he’s been hiding. He wants to ignore her, but
from the moment she came into camp, he can’t get her out of his mind.

Seasons of Change ~ Living Life Intentionally

I love fall! The colorful
leaves, the crisp, cool air, the combines harvesting in the
fields, campfires, wiener roasts, apples, pumpkins, warm days and
cool nights. Everything about it!

The change in seasons reminds me of how we go through various stages of life as we venture from adolescence to adulthood. Within each stage, lies the opportunity to deepen our relationship with God, or deplete it.

Our spring, yields new life, growth, youthfulness, and vigor, when we feel we can take on the world and accomplish anything. We have a God-given zest for life when we are young that often determines which path our lives will take.

Then there’s summer, when
we face the harsh realities of life–the struggle to make ends meet–but also
taste of its rich blessings. Meeting the love of our lives, starting and
raising a family, making career choices, and putting down roots. Here we see
either our faith thrive or shrivel as we seek to balance the cares of
living.

Summer soon turns to fall,
with thoughts of the empty nest and adjusting to life without
children in the household, the joy of grandchildren, and saving for
retirement. It’s in this stage, we begin to taste the urgency of life and living
each day to the fullest for Christ.

Lastly, comes the winter of
our lives, when things that once seemed oh, so important have faded, and the
true treasures of life come to surface. When we let go of self-consciousness,
pride, and ambition, and replace it with either joy or bitterness.

As my summer of life fades
and my fall begins, I have to ask myself, what have I accomplished? And what
have I yet to accomplish? Time is precious, and we must make the most of it.
Life flitters by so fast. So often we get caught up in the
bustle and forget what really counts. Whatever our aspirations in life,
remember–only what’s done for Christ will last.

Whichever stage of life
you’re in, I urge you to live intentionally, making the most of every
opportunity for Christ. “For to
me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
What
do you hold most dear as you journey through life? Which stage has been the
most challenging?

The Birth of a Novel

The first copies of Under Moonlit Skies just arrived! I’m so excited to hold it in my hands at last! It’s lovely!

There’s something wonderful about getting the first glimpse of a novel you’ve put your heart and soul into. I’ll never be a prolific author that can whip out three novels a year. I’m doing well to complete one within a year to a year and a half!

I’ll never be a “famous author Best-selling author like my sons tease me about. But that’s okay. In the Lord’s good time, He has brought this writing dream about. And I smile, with tears in my eyes each time I receive a comment or read a review that communicates He has touched the heart of a reader. That is my aim and goal as a writer.

I’m very excited to share this third and final installment of my Prairie Sky Series with you and wanted to give you a heads up on some giveaway opportunities going on right now during my Book Launch Tour. I’m privileged to be guest on several wonderful blogs. I hope you’ll stop by to say “Hi” and take opportunity to enter those with giveaways!

Under Moonlit Skies Giveaway!

Release Day for Under Moonlit Skies is just two weeks away! Such an exciting time for an author. All the many hours of research and writing are behind, and now it’s time to celebrate!

Under Moonlit Skies is the third and final installment in my Prairie Sky Series. I’ve so enjoyed writing these novels. I’ve learned so much, not only through researching the time period, but about writing in general.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED

In writing this series, I’ve learned that for readers to connect with my characters, they need to be real and genuine, ones readers will relate to and cheer for. My characters are flawed and in need of healing, ones who mature and grow as their stories unfold and as God stirs their hearts toward Him.

I rejoice each time I receive a comment or review that tells me the reader understood the messages woven within the novel–the message I wished to convey.

WHAT WARMS MY HEART

I’ve been so encouraged by the kind comments of readers who’ve been touched by my novels in some way. After reading this Advance Reader Review for Under Moonlit Skies, I smiled and said to myself, “She got it!” For me, that’s what it’s all about–sowing seeds of hope into the lives of readers.

WHAT’S TRULY IMPORTANT

Whether my books sell few or many, my goal is to touch hearts. The Lord has given me a desire to convey His truths through the fictional lives of my characters. It’s my prayer that those who read my novels will grow closer to the Lord right along with my characters.

BOOK GIVEAWAY

To celebrate the birth of Under Prairie Skies, I’m offering you a chance to win either an e-book or print copy (US addresses only) by entering the Rafflecopter Giveaway below. I look forward to sharing this latest novel with one of you!

Under
Moonlit Skies (Prairie Sky Series ~ Book 3)

Her life was planned out ~ until he rode in ~ Illinois prairie ~ 1859

After four long years away, Esther Stanton returns
to the prairie to care for her sister Charlotte’s family following the birth of
her second child. The month-long stay seems much too short as Esther becomes
acquainted with her brother-in-law’s new ranch hand, Stewart Brant. When
obligations compel her to return to Cincinnati and to the man her overbearing
mother intends her to wed, she loses hope of ever knowing true happiness.

Still reeling from a hurtful relationship, Stew is
reluctant to open his heart to Esther. But when he faces a life-threatening
injury with Esther tending him, their bond deepens. Heartbroken when she
leaves, he sets out after her and
inadvertently stumbles across an illegal slave-trade operation, the knowledge
of which puts him, as well as Esther and her family, in jeopardy.

Civil War Era Giveaway!

This week I’m thrilled to take part in a multi-author giveaway. Each of the five historical novels take place within the Civil War or pre-Civil War era (1859-1866). Such an intriguing time to read about as well as write about!

I invite you to stop by and connect with myself and other inspirational authors during the Civil War Era Giveaway as we share about our historical novels. You’ll have the opportunity to win a $50 Amazon Gift Card as well as the five featured novels.

FB CIVIL WAR ERA GIVEAWAY

Set in 1859–just one year prior to the onset of the Civil War–my upcoming novel, Under Moonlit Skies touches on some of the tensions of the times. Though research is a part of all of my novels, this third book was possibly the most challenging and intriguing to write/research.

The novel takes readers on a journey from the romance of the prairie to the harsh realities of the big city. But the journey my characters are on runs much deeper than the struggles of life. Theirs is a spiritual journey of the heart and soul. One in which God breaks down their misconceptions and brings them to the point of surrender.

Preorder on Amazon

I thoroughly enjoyed creating the diverse characters in this novel. There’s Stewart (Stew) Brant, a roving cowboy with barely a cent in his pocket, but who possesses a heart of gold.

Esther Stanton who has all the luxuries a young woman could dream of, and yet longs for a simple life of love she may never have opportunity to enjoy.

Isaac and Abigail Simmons, along with their young son, Benjamin (Benji), are free blacks clinging to faith, hope, and love, until what’s most precious to them–their freedom–becomes threatened.

Then, there’s the dashing, suave businessman, Lawrence Del Ray, whose charming exterior may not be all that it seems.

You’ll meet these characters and more when you share the adventure of Under Moonlit Skies! Now on Preorder. (Releasing Sept. 10th).

Introducing Under Moonlit Skies

In a few short weeks, you’ll have the opportunity to read my upcoming inspirational, historical novel, Under Moonlit Skies. I’m very excited to share this third and final installment in my Prairie Sky Series with you.

Set in 1859, the novel touches on some of the pre-Civil War tensions of the day, along with my trademark prairie setting. I so enjoyed researching this volatile time in our nation’s history. What an exciting era to write about!

As I brainstormed my story-line for the novel, I knew it would be diverse in nature–beginning in the prairie heartland and moving to the thriving city of Cincinnati, Ohio, rife with racial and political tensions. I hope you enjoy the action, the romance, the intrigue, and especially the spiritual message contained within its pages.

Interview + Giveaway with Pamela Meyers

Today I’m thrilled to have my friend and fellow historical romance author, Pamela Meyers with me sharing about her new release, Shelter Bay. She has graciously offered a Print Giveaway so stick around until the end!

It’s great to have you here, Pam. How long have you been writing?

I asked for a diary at age 8 and that was the
beginning of my desire to write things down. However it wasn’t until I returned
to college in my 40s to finish my degree that I was drawn to write, and to write
fiction which was a surprise to me.

That’s wonderful! What would you say is your favorite part of writing?

I like the editing phase after the first draft is written. By then the plot is pretty much down and then I go in and embellish, get into the deep POV of my characters and add plot twists that pop up.

Sounds like a great way to tackle a story. What is your least favorite part of the writing process?

Getting started. It’s hard sometimes to start with the
blank piece of paper and get that first line, then the first paragraph, then
the first chapter.

I totally get that! Starting a new project can seem daunting! Besides writing, what other hobbies do you enjoy?

I’m very active in my church and volunteer in the church bookstore and also in the home-bound ministry with visits to those members who are unable to attend church. I also enjoy reading, crocheting, and other crafting from time to time. My two rescue cats keep me busy as well.

LOL! I’m sure they do. That’s great. Tell us, why did you choose to write historical romance?

I started out writing contemporary romance but then when a publisher asked me to write a historical romance set in my hometown of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, I switched. Who can pass up writing a story set in her hometown? The area is history-rich and there’s a lot of fodder for a historical author.

Is
research something you enjoy? To how much of an extent to you go to find
answers?

When you write historicals you always have to
research. I love researching my setting because I always learn new things about
the area where I grew up. It’s amazing how much I don’t know despite the fact I
grew up there. I always have to go to the town library and get on the microfilm
of the local paper published during the time of my story. Then I go to the
local area museum and go through the materials there, as well as books about
the area. When I find an unexpected nugget that I know needs to be included in
the story it’s very exciting.

What
can we expect to see from you in the future?

I have one more book in my four-book series to write after this one, which is set during World War I. The next book will be set during World War II. Each of the four books involves the same family, different generations. So far I don’t think I’ll be doing one set in the sixties. But you never know. I am thinking I might switch back to contemporary. I have a story already partially written set in a small town in central Wisconsin I’d like to finish.

Sounds good. Thanks for joining us today, Pam!

Pam has written most of her life, beginning with her first diary at age eight. Her novels include Thyme For Love, Surprised by Love in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Second Chance Love, Whatever is True, and Safe Refuge, Book One in the Newport of the West Series. Pam resides in northern Illinois with her two rescue cats. She’s an hour or so away from her home town of Lake Geneva, the setting for the series, where she can be found researching and nosing for new story ideas.

What better person to do that with than Maureen?  But, after being expelled from Yale because of a prank, his dad issues an ultimatum: Enlist in the military or join his brothers in the family business. He signs up with the U.S. Life Saving Service, reasoning the time spent on the shores of Lake Michigan is far better than being stuck in a landlocked encampment. Writing Communities

I’m just coming off of two solid weeks without a phone or internet. What an ordeal! I felt as if my right arm had been cut off. LOL! The phone outage was a definite inconvenience, but it was the internet that was really tough to go without.

It wasn’t social media, marketing, or keeping abreast to the goings on I missed. (Although, the outage brought on a great deal of stress trying to work with my publisher on my upcoming book release.) Yet, it was interaction with my writing community.–the encouragement, the kind words, the knowing I’m not in this alone sort of feeling I truly missed.

Scripture says we are to “encourage one another and build each other up” (I Thessalonians 5:11). That’s exactly what Christian writers do for each other, or any like-minded group of people for that matter. Living in a rural area where there are no other Christian novelists around, I lean heavily on my on-line writer friends for support and encouragement. Being cut off from that backbone of support for so long gave me a sense of isolation.

Yes, there was an up-side to being unplugged. It allowed for opportunities to spend more time with the Lord, family, volunteering, researching for my next novel, even writing the opening scene. (I even took the opportunity to do some jobs I’d put off, like staining/waterproofing our porch and painting our bathroom). But the Lord created us for community, and how thankful I am for friends (both writers and readers) who spur me on and encourage me with their kind words.

A huge “Thank You” to all who have encouraged me in my Christian walk and in my writing journey! God bless you!

Who are you thankful for? Who encourages you? I’d love to hear from you!
