IWSG – March 2022 – Conflicted
IWSG was created by Ninja Captain Alex J Cavanaugh — because Alex understands we need a safe place to congregate, insecurity is part of our creative nature, and together we’re stronger.
On the first Wednesday of each month, you can write on any subject related to your writing journey or adopt the option of answering the month’s question. Either way, you’re in safe territory.
If this sounds like a good place to be, sign up here.
IWSG’s Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and the hashtag is #IWSG.
Every month, a question is announced that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or a story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.
March 2 question – Have you ever been conflicted about writing a story or adding a scene to a story? How did you decide to write it or not?The co-hosts for the March 2 posting of the IWSG are: Janet Alcorn, Pat Garcia, Natalie Aguirre, Shannon Lawrence Be sure to visit theInsecure Writer’s Support Group Website!
As soon as I saw this month’s question I decided I should answer it. Actually, I was convinced I should.
So I sat down.
This morning.
After a time I got up and sweep the floor.
Then I sat down.
I tapped my foot, chewed my lower lip, looked out the window…
Finally, I got up and did the dishes (no dishwasher).
And then I sat down again. You can probably see where this is going. I kept staring at a blank screen.
It’s an easy question to answer. “Have you ever been conflicted about writing a story or adding a scene to a story? How did you decide to write it or not?”

Softcover

e-Book
I knew the answer concerned Broken But Not Dead. In the first 3 chapters, an English professor becomes the victim of a home invasion and is psychologically abused for two days. What you’re thinking is exactly what I thought at the time, “Who wants to read a book about that?!”
It was difficult to write the opening. Three torturous chapters before my protagonist takes matters into her own hands.
It became so difficult that one day I asked myself, “Am I writing these scenes to sell books?”
The possibility was horrifying.
To prove that it wasn’t true, I cut the scenes, finished the book, and set it aside for 2 weeks. I distanced myself. One morning, I read the opening again and immediately, instinctively, knew the scenes had to be put back. They were the catalyst for the plot. They were the driving force behind everything my protagonist Brendell Meshango did from chapter 4 onward.
Which then begged the question: Why am I writing this novel?
I don’t believe I had a choice. It felt wrong not to.
Broken But Not Dead is a story about redemption. It’s a story about rising above childhood trauma, brokenness, and taking back your power. Not to mention Brendell was haunting me day and night. Sometimes a person is faced with a rage that won’t go away, and to survive, you have to face it.
When Brendell Meshango resigns from her university professor position and retreats to her isolated cabin to repair her psyche, she is confronted by a masked intruder. His racial comments lead her to believe she is the solitary victim of a hate crime.
However, is all as it appears? After two bizarre days, the intruder mysteriously disappears but continues to play mind games with her. Taught by her mother to distrust the mainstream-based power structures, and with her stalker possibly linked to a high level of government, Brendell conceals the incident from the police. But will her silence keep her safe?
Then her beloved daughter, Zoë, is threatened and Brendell takes matters into her own hands. To save Zoë, Brendell searches for the stalker and confronts not just a depraved madman but her own fears and prejudices.
Broken But Not Dead won the IPPY 2012 Silver Medal.

Finding Happiness with a new website by Hank Quense
I’ve created a number of video classes that are available on Udemy. For a while now I’ve been looking for another site to add the videos. While Udemy is a great site, they do a lot of advertising and promoting and keep almost all of the sales revenue. Recently someone signed up for a course and my royalty came to about 16%. I’ve had even smaller pay-outs than that one. Udemy also runs site-wide sales in which every course — no matter what the price — sells for $9.99. It does this without telling the creators who find out when they get a ridiculous low payout for one of the courses.
I felt I needed an alternative to Udemy to lessen my dependency on the site. Over the last months I’ve looked into several sites, but found them wanting for various reasons.
Recently, I read an article on Medium and the article mentioned a site called Gumroad https://gumroad.gumroad.com/ which is a competitor for Udemy and for other sites like Podia. I investigated it and immediately signed up. What I like is that it is much more open than Udemy. Another issue in Gumroad’s favor is the fee charged is fixed and at a low percentage. And there is no monthly fee that other sites like Podia charge.
While there is a learning curve involved with the Gumroad, mastering the curve has uncovered quite a few pleasant surprises. For one, after I create a sales page for a video class, I can embed that sales page into my own website. And that process works with a simple, one-line command. I keep finding more surprises as I get deeper into the website.
All in all, the Gumroad’s website is a quite pleasant surprise. I’ve added quite a bit of content to it in the last week or so. You can visit the site using this link: https://hanque.gumroad.com/

I want to answer this month’s question, but it’ll make me cry. I’m already teary thinking about them. There are so many people who supported me and aren’t around any longer. And while that is the circle of life, it’s hard to bear sometimes. For that reason I won’t be answering the question, however, I will visit your blog and learn about the special somebody in your life.
I know I’m repeating myself… but I’m excited. I have a fourth novel coming out on March 23 titled KISS OF THE ASSASSIN. What makes it special is I wrote it in 1992. I tried for many years to have it published, so this release is particularly thrilling. Why didn’t Kiss of the Assassin get published before now? I’m not sure. Numerous publishers said no one was interested in the Vietnam War. But maybe it was my less-than-impressive query letter. Or maybe it simply wasn’t the right time.
30 years later — the lesson: N E V E R G I V E U P!
If political thrillers are your genre and you think you might be interested in reviewing Kiss of the Assassin, please contact me at joyleneDOTbutlerATgmailDOTcom and I’ll send you an epub version and my undying gratitude.
Marina Antonovna, a Soviet spy, and Mateo Arcusa, an American homicide li eutenant first meet in Cambodia during the Vietnam War as enemies. Fearful that the most powerful man in the Soviet Union, KGB Chairman Vladimir Kurenkov, has ordered her death, Marina risks everything to defect to the United States. She promises Mateo that her days as an assassin are over. Vladimir is determined to do whatever it takes to bring her back and, by threatening Mateo’s life, forces Marina to break her promise.
Warning: Mature subject matter and some coarse language.
Recently my husband and I and six friends travelled three hours south of Bucerias back to Cabo Corrientes and particularly Hotel Mayto.
It’s a very special place and I returned home refreshed and invigorated. The beach was all but deserted and we had the place to ourselves. It was lovely. The second day the tide came in and I was enthralled. Six to eight feet surf pounding to shore … hypnotizing.

My Evolution As an Author by HANK QUENSE
Starting way back in the last millennium, I began my career as a writer. Since that time, my writing has gone through a series of evolutions.
Short Stories
I began writing short stories to master the crafts of story design and story-telling. Short stories have an advantage in that they are . . . short. I could create a number of short stories and get them critiqued and submitted in the time needed to write a novel. Eventually, I sold over 40 stories all of them less than 6,000 words long.
While writing another short story, a strange thing happened: it ended up as a novella, over 20,000 words. I wasn’t sure how that happened, but I didn’t worry about it and started another short story. This one ended up as an even longer novella. I realized my characters were becoming more complex and my plots more complicated and those factors accounted for the increased length.
I set out to write a novella and this time it ended up as a novel, over 60,000 words long
Novels
So, I decided I was a novelist and wrote a number of them (not all worthy of publication). Along the way, I realized I would have great difficulty writing another short story because the word count limitations are very restrictive.
As a member of several writing groups, I noticed that newbie writers have a lot of problems understanding how to go about creating a story. I decided to write a book to explain it all.
Non-fiction
The first non-fiction book was about writing fiction. That was followed by a book on self-publishing and after that, one on book marketing followed by more non-fiction titles.
I still get great story ideas for more short stories and novels, but I don’t have time to write them because of all the non-fiction projects
Infographics
While searching for a book on financial planning for my grandkids, I can across one that used infographics. While thumbing through it, I had this idea that it would be great fun to create a new version of my book on fiction writing using an Infographic approach.
So I did it and now my writing regiment consists of all infographics. I have several more infographic projects planned. If you’re not familiar with infographic books, you can grab a free sample of this book on my website.
What’s next?
Who knows where my writing evolution will go next. I can, however, predict I won’t be writing (or composing) an opera. I do have ideas for some really weird stories so perhaps I’ll return to writing fiction.

Fiscal Innovation by Hank Quense
Faux Network’s religious reporter, Mathew Mark Lukejohn wrote this report after attending a press conference with the Bishop of the Diocese of Weehawken, NJ. A small, middle-class town across the Hudson River from Manhattan, the Diocese is known for its fiscal innovations.
Bishop Alteri stated the Church faced a financial crisis caused by the many multi-million dollar settlements in sex abuse cases. These payments are threatening the priests’ standard of living and the diocese’s investment portfolio.
“In these trying times, the Church must rely on the faithful to dig deeper to prevent the dollar drain from harming the diocese,” Bishop Auteri said.
He went on to explain his new financial rescue program. “Many, indeed most, of the parishioners are not giving as much money as they could be giving. Therefore, I am ordering all families to provide a copy of their latest tax return to their parish church.”
According to the Bishop, one priest in each parish has been trained to examine the returns and to determine the level of giving the family must adhere to. Any family who doesn’t hand over a copy of their tax return by June 15 will have their name put on a Wall of Shame which will be installed in each church’s vestibule. If a family fails to meet the weekly level of giving assigned to them, their name will be read out from the pulpit at Sunday Mass and will be listed in the parish bulletin. As an alternative to the increased weekly giving, a family may elect to turn over their tax refund provided it is large enough.
Mr. Lukejohn plans to interview parishioners to get their reaction to the new financial relief plan.

This is going to be short this month. The new cover of my next novel is out and I’m seeking reviews. Its release date is sometime in 2022.
Kiss of the Assassin is an international thriller that spans 10 years and takes place in Russia, Cambodia, and Miami, to name a few. If you can offer a review, please email me at joylene[dot]butler[at]gmail.com or message me through FaceBook at: https://www.facebook.com/cluculzwriter. I’ll send you a pdf version, followed by a kindle version as soon as I receive one from my publisher. I will also reciprocate if/when you need a review.
If I owe you a review, let me know. Since the pandemic, I’ve misplaced my to-do list and these days my memory isn’t at its best.
What stresses me out the most? Asking for reviews.
What delights me? Creating scenes that flow and make me forget where I am.

INFOGRAPHICS by Hank Quense
Infographics
Recently, I browsed Amazon looking for a book on financial planning to give my grandkids for Xmas. I found one and ordered five print copies of it. Here’s a partial screenshot of the Amazon page.
Notice it’s an infographic edition. It’s loaded with graphics and colors. When I got the books, I looked through one and had an idea: it would be really cool to put together an infographic edition of my Creating Stories book. The new edition would be aimed at middle and high school kids. A screenshot for what may or may not be the cover is below.
So I started on this project and immediately ran into a big problem: I don’t know squat about infographics. It took a day or two to fix this problem. I’m using Canva to develop the infographic pages, after rejecting several other sites for various reasons. After putting together a dozen pages, I came to another big problem: how to publish the book?
The pages don’t have text in it like a normal book: instead each page is a single graphic file. Stacking the .png files into a word processor doesn’t work. Canva won’t export the infographic files in a suitable format (8.5 x11 or 6×9) and neither will any other infographic site. I checked a few online book sites but they seem to only handle text, not graphic files. Finally, I found a desktop publishing app, Swift 5. I bought it ($19.99) and it works fine. I can export the files in a 6×9 pdf file and upload it to Kindle and/or IngramSpark (or so I think: that theory will be tested later on.). From experience, I’m sure it won’t be that simple. Nevertheless, I’ll persist.
Editing is different with the infographics. When I find a typo, I can’t simply change it. The entire page with the typo is a graphic file and can’t be changed in Swift. I have to go back to the original Canva file and make the changes there. Then I download the revised file and use it to replace the one with the typo.
Shown is a typical page from the new book.
I should have this ready for publication by the end of the year. Maybe!
Anyway, it is different and I’m having so much fun I’m thinking of making more infographic editions of my books.

November 3 question – What’s harder to do, coming up with your book title or writing the blurb?Alex’s awesome co-hosts for the November 3 posting of the IWSG are Kim Lajevardi, Victoria Marie Lees, Erika Beebe, Lee Lowery, and me, Joylene.
Be sure to visit theInsecure Writer’s Support Group Website!!!
I find writing blurbs to be painful and exhausting. Luckily, I’ve always had beta-pals, editors, or publishers who could take my poor effort and turn it into something awesome.
In contrast, coming up with a title has been easy.
Dead Witness, my first novel, was about a woman forced into Witness Protection. The investigators made her pretend to be dead to her family so the killers would surface.
Broken But Not Dead; despite the threat of death, Professor Brendell Meshango goes after the man terrorizing her when he threatens to harm her daughter.
Matowak: Woman Who Cries; Sally Warner has lost her husband and her children and may just lose her faculties.
Kiss of the Assassin; Assassins are deadly, but they’re still human. Does that mean they deserve to be happy?
I could come up with titles all day long. … Blurbs? Not so much.
Hoping to change that, I’m excited about the release of Kiss of the Assassin and therefore will continue to work on this blurb until the cows come home. I spent years trying to get it published. Now that it’s going to be, I feel I owe it homage. If that makes any sense.
Thirty-plus years later, this is the blurb I’ve got so far. It can only go up from here:
Kiss of the Assassin is a political thriller that spans 10 years and tells the story of Marina Antonovna, a Soviet spy, and Mateo Arcusa, an American homicide lieutenant. They first meet in Cambodia during the Vietnam War as enemies.
The moral of my story is: it’s never too late and you’re never too old.
Happy IWSG Wednesday, everyone.

FAUX NEWS NETWORKS presents Hank Quense and… Marcia’s back!
Hello, my name is Marcia Hammerhead, senior book reviewer for Faux News Network. Today, I’ve been tasked with interviewing the author who wrote *How to* *Self-publish and Market a Book*. I don’t know why my editor insists I waste my time on a book like this. Obviously, self-published books are trash and the author who wrote this one, Hank Quense, writes genre trash. So this book must be trash to the second power. Trash squared in other words. On well, I suppose I should get on with it.
Marcia Hammerhead: Mr. Quense, once again it is my ill-fortune to interview you.
Hank Quense: Maria, once again it is my good fortune to talk to you. I trust you’ll do justice to my book.
MH: Hah! Self-publishing is an abomination. The publishing companies do a service to society by restricting the number of genre trash that the public is exposed to.
HQ: Not true, Mary. The publishing companies often act as gatekeepers to restrict what the reading public can access. Publishing companies don’t like the self-publishing option because it challenges their business model and takes away revenue. Since that is the case, let’s hear it for self-publishing!
MH: What a disturbing comment. As if a self-publisher of genre trash is qualified to comment on the business model of successful publishing companies!
HQ: I also self-publish non-fiction, Matilda
MH: My name is Marcia. Have you even tried to obtain a publisher?
HQ: Yeah, I did. My first two books were published by a small indie press. I didn’t like that experience so I decided to go for self-publishing.
MH: Leaving that aside, what does this book of yours offer that isn’t already available on the market?
HQ: It offers quite a lot, Margret. Almost every book on publishing ignores the marketing end. Almost every book on marketing ignores the publishing end. It’s as if publishing and marketing are two separate processes. But they aren’t. The two processes are part of the same project. That’s where my book is different: it integrates both into a single unified project.
MH: Good heavens! Are you claiming your book actually has benefits? You, a scribbler of fictional nonsense, believe you wrote a book that will actually help other writers publish even more trash?
HQ: Yes, I am.
MH: This is nothing less than an assault on society. It’s another step in the downward spiral of civilization. I’m sure there is something that can be done to prohibit the sale of your book.
HQ: Sorry, Margo. There is no way to stop it. It’s already available on a number of websites. If you wish, I’ll give you an autographed copy. Free.
MH: How insulting. As if I would accept it. This interview is over. Where did I put that bottle of gin?
