Running wild in Dartmoor

A 26-mile run through deserted Dartmoor isn't everyone's idea of a weekend break, but it can be an exhilarating form of escapism – as long as you watch your step

The clouds are black, pile-driving over the hills and spitting cold rain in our faces. We're standing in a car park on the edge of Dartmoor, trying to get changed into running gear before it starts to pour.

"OK, let's do it," says Ceri Rees, our guide and leader.

I've come to Devon for a new Wild Running weekend, a 26-mile scamper acros...

Barefoot running shoes - reviewed

Barefoot running shoes may sound like an oxymoron – but there is some logic behind them. Why do some runners prefer them, and what are the best models?

Barefoot running has been one of the hottest topics of discussion among runners ever since Chris McDougall's book Born to Run brought the subject to full light.

McDougall wrote about a theory developed by Harvard scientists that running barefoot naturally reduces your impact on the ground – by forcing you to land on your mid-foot or fore-foot r...

Running 1,000 miles in 30 days

Three friends are running the equivalent of 39 marathons across eastern Europe to raise money for Love146, a charity that helps victims of child trafficking

Carrying everything they need on their backs, three friends from England set out to run 39 marathons across eastern Europe.

Tom, Rob and Guy ran the Marathon des Sables last year and were looking for another challenge. "Where do you go from there?" asks Tom. "Then someone said, 'Run 1,000 miles'. And the idea was born."

The three friends are...

Running blog: how was your weekend running?

Were you one of the many spring marathoners putting in your longest pre-race run this weekend? Have you been battling injury, weather or just boredom? Share your running tales

The trails were swarming with runners this weekend. With the London marathon now just four weeks away, it was key long run time for many people – me included. And I'm sure I'm not the only one whose body feels like it is hanging together by a piece of string right now. A tight achilles, blisters and a sore throat all con...

Jo Pavey: 'It feels so liberating to run by the edge of the sea'

London Olympics star Jo Pavey on tuna rolls for breakfast, U2 before a race - and some very happy news

Hi Jo. A nice easy question to start off with, when is your next race? I've got some news actually, I'm pregnant.

Oh, congratulations! Thanks. Yes, we're thrilled.

So you won't be racing until next year at the earliest, I guess? Well, I am competing in the Glasgow women's 10K on May 12, but by that stage I'll be five months pregnant, so I'll be planning to take it easy, enjoy the atmosphere and...

Paula Radcliffe: 'I've gone crazy not being able to run'

The marathon world record holder on her first race, her favourite places to run and her best training tips

Hi Paula Hi. Congratulations on the book, by the way, I really enjoyed it

[Momentarily lost for words] You read it then? Yes

Wow. Right. Thanks! So … how's your health? Will we ever see you on the elite startline of a marathon again? I hope so. It's still a work in progress, but my foot is improving since they took the screws out, so we'll see.

If you don't get back to running competitively,...

Running blog: how was your weekend running?

Are you recovering from one of the many half marathons this weekend, or did you take it easy and enjoy a sport of spring sunshine in the park? Come and share your weekend runs with us

How are your legs this morning? Mine aren't too bad. I ran the Adidas Silverstone half marathon yesterday as part of my preparations for the London marathon next month, but I didn't run as fast as I was hoping.

It was a cold, windy day and while it's novel to be running around the fabled motor-racing circuit, it's...

Why we love to run

It's tough, it hurts – and yet more than two million of us in the UK run at least once a week. Why? To launch our new running blog, Adharanand Finn explains the enormous pleasure it brings – and how we're actually hardwired to do it

"Daddy, where are you going?" my son asked me recently as I was lacing up my running shoes on a cold, wet Sunday morning. "Running," I said. "Why?" he asked.

He's only three. But it was a good question, and one I couldn't readily answer. I didn't really want to go....
