Review: PICTURE DAY by Sarah Sax

“Stand up to Parental Picture DayTyranny!”

Viv is tired of the lame picturesshe has to take for school. She wanted to be bold. She wanted to be different.She wanted to be noticed. So, she does it—she cuts off her hair. Whoa! That’llget you noticed.

Soon, she becomes a social mediasensation. Viv’s ideas were wild and crazy, and they were all getting her theattention she wanted. But was all this attention good? Were Viv and her friendspopular…or laughingstocks?  School can beharsh sometimes. Sometimes it’s good to not be noticed.

Cute illustrations! I loved themessage of just being you and loving it.

Review: WHAT IF WE WERE by Axelle Lenoir

This is a game of “What if” for 2best friends, who let their imaginations go wild. What if they were Vikings?They’d have the beard, sail around the world, and discover new worlds. Therewas a little too much text for my liking, but I enjoyed the funny illustrations.What if they were superheroes? They’d be like the Incredible Hulk. Cool! Theywere the female Ren and Stimpy. Just crazy girls. Just odd and quirky. Prettycool comics in general.

Review: THE BABYSITTER’S CLUB: CLAUDIA AND THE BAD JOKE by Arley Nopra

The text was a little too small toread, but I love the pictures. Fortunately, the pictures tell the story well.So fun and funny! Still, I kind of wished I would’ve been able to read the textmore.

This one was all about pranks andClaudia’s new client was a little prankster. Suddenly, a bad joke turns seriouswhen she breaks her leg. With Claudia recuperating, the club had to take overthe unruly pranksters. But, hey, two can play that game, right? Oh, the funnypranks!

My rating is really based on theart, which is just awesome. The art work is a solid 4-star, but the small,unreadable text brought it down to 3.5 stars.

Blog Tour: THE CARETAKER by Regina Wixon

Haunted Historical Mystery Series, Book 3

Paranormal Thriller

Date Published: February 25, 2024

A blizzard rips through the Black Hills of South Dakota, as journalist Rachael embarks on a journey to Hawthorne House, a remote inn located deep in the frigid wilderness. As the storm rages on, Rachael finds herself caught in a gripping tale of mystery and intrigue, unsure of what lies ahead in the enigmatic world of the treacherous snow-covered landscape and the sinister forces that lurk within Hawthorn House. The icy snowstorm blurs the lines between reality and imagination as Rachael uncovers secrets and revelations that challenge her perception of the caretaker and the true nature of Hawthorn House.

EXCERPT

Viewing the house piece by piece, with its arched windowsand elaborate porch it was beautiful, but the disparate elements did not cometogether to make a harmonious home. It squatted there in its hovel, thewhiteness of the siding disappearing in the grayness of the photo. The smallwindows in the attic appeared to be hooded eyes, malevolent in the darkness ofwinter's twilight, and I shivered and wrapped my arms around myself. Thepictures I had seen of Mawthorne Mouse had been taken in the summer, when theover: growth of trees had masked much of the home. I stepped closer to themonitor and studied the house closely. The entrance appeared to be a dark,wooden door. It's usually hard to go wrong with a door shape, but it seemedshorter and broader than most. There was depth to the opening, as if I couldreach out with my finger, push through that door, and enter the house. Ishivered again. I was letting the lateness of the night and the ambience of theAlex Johnson get to me - I, who always resided in the here and now. I reachedout to the mouse to close the browser and paused. Perhaps it was a weakconnection or a faulty signal, but snowflakes appeared to drift across thescreen, twisting and spiraling as they swept around the house. I grabbed themouse, and the screen settled - no movement, Yust a picture of an uneasy house,shivering in the cold. I closed the tab and went to bed, shrugging off myapprehension.

Review: The narrative was nice n’ simpleand tells the story of the scoop on haunted hotels. We begin the story as sheleaves one hotel and travels in a snowy blizzard to another hotel, describingher actions in a diary-style prose. This 1st person narrative wasfine, but it does take a while to get through as it’s literally a play-by-playwith too many little things described along the way. She doesn’t reach thehotel until the end of chapter 4. The writer does well describing her surroundingsand the scenery, adding an air of mystery and chill to it all. There wassomething unsettling about the caretaker—so creepy and stone-cold. I didn’tquite understand how we were randomly talking about a boy in chapter 8. It tookme a while to realize that we were getting the history of Hawthorne House.

Overall, this was a fairly niceand lengthy read. I would’ve liked it better to be quicker and lessdescriptive. It definitely has that chilling, ghostly vibe that you wouldexpect, and the writing was pretty good. I’d say that ghost lovers should givethis a shot.

The role of the Union is to protect the British Empire,which is at the height of its powers, and help in its technological advances.They have discovered the existence of the mystical Book of Consciousnesswritten by the creator of the cosmos, the genderless Omnisoul. The book is thehistory of everything that is, that has been and that will be. The agents areaided by Skye, who accidentally calls forth seven merciless immortals calledthe Charon.

Knownas the Beautiful and the Damned, the Charon are the Infernal Dukes of Hell,created to carry out the will of the Omisoul. But they are tired of theirimmortality and want to end their existence. Elsewhere, the sorcerer Ragnar ofRoc has conjured a hole in spacetime, allowing the draconic Elder God Calabi Yato re-enter the cosmos from the Ghost Worlds. Excerpt One:

He ran his handthrough a shock of blonde hair that looked permanently wind swept. IsambardIgnatius was a tall young man; he was handsome, dressed in a frock coat ofcheck tweed and an engineer’s waistcoat, complete with a large silver pocketwatch and chain.

From previousresearch, Ignatius had discovered a vague reference to an archaic manuscriptthat was said to hold the key to reality, the story of the whole cosmos – whathad been, what was and that which was to come. This was said to be thebiography of the cosmos. Legend had it that the book was unique in being olderthan the earth, indestructible, and that whoever read it could see the eventsdescribed within pass before their eyes. Ignatius didn’t believe this but didbelieve that in the wrong hands the book could be very dangerous.

Ignatius wasbeginning to realise that the body was, as many eastern aesthetics had taughtthrough the ages, surplus, just a vehicle for the mind. This was a philosophyand science that would make religion obsolete. The view that the real world wasnothing more than the physical world was destined to come crumbling down and belost in the debris of all religious buildings. He knew this was why theAdministorium were trying to keep an eye on his activities.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What makes your book different from any otherbook in this genre?
My novel,Timeslayers is a fantasy book set in a steampunk world. These are thecategories I probably like most when reading fantasy fiction, but I have aconcern that I don’t really think novels should be categorised. I know itsuseful and it helps to inform potential new readers, but I think sometimes italso limits them. I think my book is different because it doesn’t necessarilyfall into just one category. Yes, it is steampunk, it is low fantasy but mostof the steampunk novels I have read take place in a fictional Victorian worldpowered by steam, with the usual array of steam weapons, but I don’t think Ihave read such a novel that went further and included immortals and gods.
Timeslayersstarts on earth in Oxford, England in a non-specified Victorian time, when theBritish Empire is at its height, but it soon goes further when the twoprotagonists, Ignatius and Indigo are taken to travel the cosmos, through spaceand time on the great ship Taraka which is a Sanskrit word for crossing orferryman. They have discovered the existence of the mystical Book ofConsciousness written by the creator of the cosmos, the genderless Omnisoul.The book is the history of everything that is, that has been and that will be.
Known as theBeautiful and the Damned, the Charon are the Infernal Dukes of Hell, created tocarry out the will of the Omnisoul. But they are tired of their immortality andwant to end their existence. Ignatius and Indigo are mere pawns in the cosmicocean of fate, carried to fabled places, witness to bloody massacres, andhalf-willing conspirators in the Charon’s plot to thwart the Omnisoul’s planand defeat the protectors of the Well at the Centre of Time.
Therefore, Ibelieve the story has other elements that the usual offering in this genre doesnot have and so I am hopeful this is what will make the story more interestingfor the reader. It has an element of the fantastic with some unique charactersand places.
(separately/not a throuple)There is no graphic violence.The novel does deal with mature themes like addiction, suicide, and adultery as well as grief, guilt, the power of friendship, and forgiveness. However, given the protagonist's addiction issues, it can be a bit raw at times.Book Description:
The Heaven Spot  is a modern-day mystery set in Palm Beach, Florida, that depicts opioid addict Maggie Robert’s desperate attempt to come to terms with her estranged daughter, Lilly’s, murder.
Review: Maggie had just lost herbookstore, her home, and now her only daughter. Upon realizing that herdaughter was murdered, Maggie resolves to find her killer.
The narrative was nice and simple,and it naturally draws you in. Memories flood Maggie’s mind as she battles thegrief and looks into her daughter’s life. Right away, you feel for the grievingmother that was still kicking a substance abuse problem. You really get intothe mystery here. Things get more complex when the homicide detective suspectsMaggie of the murder. Maggie knows that she could never kill anyone, let aloneher own daughter. But how could you explain your whereabouts when you couldn’t rememberthem because of a drug binge?  And whatcan you do when the memory flashes you do get end up putting you at the crimescene? Did Maggie kill her daughter after all?
A gripping mystery for sure! Keepsyou invested from start to finish. I found Lily’s hidden letter game to be themost interesting. Six clues that would lead to her killer. Wow! This is allturned into a desperate search for the Heaven Spot. You won’t believe how thisall ends. A must read!
REVIEW:
The XXX-Plorers have an honorablemission to protect Earth from its invaders. It’s just that their methods areless conventional.
Filled with fighting and steamyaction, this brazen comic gives viewers an odd composition of sex, science, andaliens. The illustrations were awesome. The language is crude and the storyline is complex, but it has this inexplicable draw. The text can be a littletoo much to read at times, but I enjoyed the story just the same. Smart andfunny, this was a nice read.
BLURB:
ComeOne! Come All!
ToWeston’s Wild West Texas Stampede
Therewere Cowboys and Indians, trick riding, thrills and excitement for everyone.And if Liberty Jones had anything to say about it, she would be a part of theshow, too. She had demonstrated her expertise with a gun by shooting a playingcard out of Reed Weston’s hand at thirty paces, but the arrogant owner of thestampede wouldn’t even give her a chance.
Disguisingherself as a boy, Libby wrangled herself a job with the show, and before sheknew it Reed was firing at her—in front of an audience. It seemed an emotionalshowdown was inevitable whenever they came together, but Libby had set hersights on Reed’s heart and she vowed she would prove her love was every bit astrue as her aim.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:

Reed opened thedoor to his private wagon and stood back to let Libby enter ahead of him. Sheswept past him, her manner dignified and ladylike, in spite of her masculineattire.

“Have a seat.”He motioned to one of the chairs at the small table.

“No, thank you.I prefer to stand.”

“Have it yourway,” he said sharply. “It seems you don’t listen well, Miss Jones. As Irecall, I told you I wasn’t hiring for the show—and I especially wasn’t hiringany women.”

“I hired on asa boy,” she retorted.

Reed’s gazeraked over her. “So I see. How ingenuous of you.”

“You wouldn’tgive me a chance! I’m good and I just proved it tonight! The performance wouldhave been a disaster if I hadn’t stopped the runaway team in time! The audiencethought it was a regular part of the act.”

“I could tell,”he answered, irritated by the whole situation.

“I can help youwith the show,” Libby went on, trying not to sound desperate. If he fired her,she had no money, and nowhere else to go.

“I don’t needyour help, Miss Jones.”

“But youwouldn’t want to disappoint the public, would you?”

“You know,you’re right. You are worth a lot of money to me. You wanted a job withWeston’s Wild West Texas Stampede—well, you’ve got one. You’re officiallyWeston’s Lady.”

“Know this,Reed Weston—I am worth a lot of money to you, and I’ll earn ever cent of itworking for the Stampede, but that’s the only place I’m going to be Weston’sLady.”

“We both knowyou’re not a lady, and I’m not sure you’re much of a woman.” Even as he saidit, Reed knew it was a lie. She looked beautiful as she challenged him. Herhair was a glorious golden mane of curls about her shoulders and high colorstained her cheeks.

Libby reactedwithout thought, swinging out at him.

Reed snared herwrist to stop her when she would have slapped him, and he jerked her to him.

In thatinstant, his awareness of everything except Libby faded. He drew her near,slowly, deliberately. He wanted this—no, he needed this. He needed to taste herpassion.

Libby foundherself frozen, held captive by the unfathomable look in Reed’s eyes.

Their lips met,and time seemed suspended as his mouth settled over hers in a possessive brand,claiming her sweetness for his own.

Review: SMILE by Raina Telgemeier

Braces, yikes!

An accident causes her to lose hertwo front teeth. My teeth! All that blood on the ground! The scenes can be kindof gross, but you feel for her—her pain, her humiliation.

As she’s recuperating, she gets acard that says “Smile!” Well, that was just the rock on her sundae. And thelast thing you want your dentist to say is “uh-oh.” What “uh-oh!”

Story illustrates the whole dentalprocess like molds, x-rays, ortho visits, to not being able to eat popcorn, tobeing dubbed “vampire girl.” This becomes a wonderful tale of growing pains.

This story was both fun and funny!Absolutely loved it! Goes to show that sometimes you just gotta laugh atyourself and smile!
