On a long table, wide enough to allow the oil lamp to bemoved around Lydia Forsyth’s remains, the body lay curled in the same posturein which she had been found. Hugh and his cousin stood on either side ofLockhart. The woman might have been vivacious in life.
Death had wiped away every sign of intelligence, wit, andkindness.
The doctor ran his fingers over the right side of her skull.He took longer about it than many would have thought necessary, given that theblow had clearly been fatal. Hugh needed no medical training to know that.
“She was struck atleast several times with the candlestick, the blows not having fallen all inthe same place. The murderer meant to make sure of her.”
“Do you mean to perform an autopsy?” The foreboding inWallace’s voice made it plain he hoped the answer would be negative.

Oneday after coming home from first grade, Kathleen Buckley set about writing herown dictionary but quickly realized it would take too much time, so she read abook instead. Possibly Space Cat.
Aftera career which included customer service, light bookkeeping, working as aparalegal, and a stint as a security officer, she began to write as a secondcareer, rather than as a hobby. Her first historical romance was written afterre-reading Georgette Heyer’s Georgian/Regency romances for the tenth or twelfthtime and wondering if she could do something like that. Apparently she could,as her eleventh will be released on 3/24/2025. As a change of pace, it’s amurder mystery, but still set in the mid-1700s (but still with some romance).
Warning:no bodices are ripped in her romances, which might be described as "powder& patch & peril" rather than Jane Austen drawing room. Theycontain no explicit sex, but do contain the occasional den of vice and mild badlanguage, as the situations in which her characters find themselves sometimescall for an oath a little stronger than "Zounds!"

When the unmistakable opening piano notes of “All of Me”came on, Tess looked up at Jack. “It’s our song, baby.”
“That’s my cue,” he said to the group.
He led her onto the dance floor. She put one hand on hisshoulder, and he slipped one around her waist to the small of her back. Theystarted to sway, staring at each other as if they were the only people in theworld. As the song progressed, she moved her hand down his arm to pull himcloser, and he ran his fingers through her hair. They were pressed tightlytogether, in slow movement. Everyone at their table watched, smiles acrosstheir faces.
“Whoa,” Bobby mumbled.
“They are really in love. I’ve never seen anything like it,”Joe said.
Clay put his arm around Omar and said, “Look at them.”
“If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I’d never believe it.My sweet Butterfly is truly happy.”
When the song was over, Jack whispered, “Let’s go to yourplace.”
At the end of the evening, they all bundled up and stumbledout of the bar.
A homeless man standing on the sidewalk asked, “Can youplease spare anything?”
The group stood around awkwardly, but Tess walked right upto him. “Hi. I’m Tess, this is Jack, and these are our friends.”
Jack stepped directly behind Tess in a protective stance.
“What’s your name?” Tess gently asked the man.
“Henry,” he replied.
She smiled, pulled a twenty-dollar bill out of her pocket,and handed it to him. When he took the money, she held his hand. Surprised, helooked at her and said, “You’re very kind. Thank you.”
“Getting kind of cold out,” she remarked, still holding hishand.
“Sure is.”
She took off her cashmere scarf and held it out. “Here,please take this and try to stay warm.”
“Wow,” Joe muttered.
“Oh, I couldn’t,” Henry said.
“Please, I insist.”
“Thank you,” he said, taking the scarf. “Someone must havetaught you to do unto others.”
“No, someone taught me there are no others. Good night,Henry.”
She turned to her friends, their mouths agape.
Henry looked at Jack, who hadn’t moved, and quietly asked,“Is she some kind of angel?”
“Yeah, something like that,” he muttered.
Tess walked over to Omar and hugged him. “Our usualbreakfast on Thursday?”
“Yes, Butterfly.”
“Good night, guys,” she said to her friends.
They all said goodbye. Jack took Tess’s hand and walked herto his car. He opened her door and she got in. When he closed the door, helooked back at Henry, who was wrapping the scarf around his neck and smiling.

Topic: Please describe one of yourfavorite scenes in this book and why it's your favorite.
I absolutely adore all the scenes betweenTess and Jack. Their love is so deep and affectionate, I feel wrapped in a hugby them. But I don’t want to give anything away about the plot and many sceneswith Tess and Jack contain spoilers, so I’ll tell you a little about anotherfavorite. Tess and Jack have a closeknit group of friends—chosen family—and Ilove scenes between them all. They’re the kind of fun and supportive people weall should have in our lives. These scenes often take place at Shelby’s Bar,their Friday night hangout spot. In my favorite one, Omar, Tess’s sarcastic andall-around fabulous bestie tells a hilarious story about Tess and a famous rockstar. I love that scene for two reasons. It makes me laugh out loud. It alsoshows the beautiful bonds of friendship between Tess and Omar and between theentire friendship group. It was great fun to write.
