Review: ALLERGIC by Megan Lloyd and Michelle Nutter

At last, Maggie was finally getting her own dog. But…it turns out she was allergic. What to do? Well, she couldn’t have anything with fur or feathers, so she tries to think of some other options. Snake, frogs, fish, lizards, etc.

Follow Maggie as she goes on a pet quest. The fish died right away. The lizard got taken by her brothers. The frogs couldn’t be touched. And hedgehogs were illegal.

Then Maggie makes a new friend, who gets a dog. Uh oh! And she was mad. It so wasn’t fair!

Story has some funny and colorful illustrations. It explains the concept of allergies well and how Maggie copes with them.

A fun, little read!

Review: MAYLIE AND THE MAZE by M.L. Tarpley

Maylie Montes want to be like her favorite authors and is struggling to write her story. She needed inspiration. Maybe this trip with her aunt might be just thing thig. First stop: London.

Let the adventure begin. To achieve her dream of being a writer, she had to do better and be better.

Story has funny, caricature images in between the text that were enjoyable. It’s a nice story, but it can be kinda long sometimes, especially for a middle grade novel. It should inspire anyone to take risks and have some fun.

Review: BOOK LOVE by Debbie Tung

I am a book lover and I could totally relate to this book. It’s all about a book lover’s addiction and how she’d rather read than do anything else—work, sleep, go outside.

Books are her friends. Which is more important—books or food? Do you even have to ask?

Books just speak to you: Read Me.

She’s so obsessed with books that it makes you laugh.

Any book lover would see themselves in this.

“When I read, I’m in a world of my own.” Truth to a T.

Review: CALLING DR. LAURA by Nicole Georges

This is about a woman who gets to a palm reader to learn that her real father is still alive.

Black and white drawings are stiff and lifeless. Some of the text is hard to read and you can’t really follow the story by the pictures. Her story is not that interesting. She adopts a chicken? Weirdo.

Most of it consists of her talking about her wacked-out childhood. I don’t get it. It’s too all over the place. Makes no sense. I thought it would be funny, but it’s just too weird and stupid.

Review: THE EXTRAORDINARILY ORDINARY LIFE OF CASSANDRA JONES by Tamara Hart Heiner

Cassie Jones is just an ordinary girl with nothing extraordinary about her. She enters jr. high with doubts and insecurities. First, jealousy kicks in when her best friend’s old friend comes back into town. Then it goes on to her soccer camp and meeting her other bunk mates, which slowed down the story dramatically. Suddenly it becomes all about the camp.

An okay YA read, but not that great to me.

Blog Tour: SWORN TO FLY by Maria Imbalzano

Sworn to Fly

by Maria Imbalzano

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE
: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Risk-averse ER nurse, Alyssa Beckman, is about to lose her job because of yet another bad decision. In order to put her life back on track, she books a week at a rustic mountain resort to ponder her next steps and rejuvenate. But when she arrives, she learns she’s enrolled in boot camp, an adventure program far out of her comfort zone.

While there, she meets Gabriel Sutton, a world-travelling high fashion photographer who is in danger of losing his clients as well as his status if he doesn’t start following the rules.  While hiking, kayak racing, and participating in team challenges, sparks fly between Alyssa and Gabe as they encourage each other to take different life paths. But will those paths lead them farther apart or bring them closer together?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
The photographer passed her, continuing to snap away as they made their way down through the wooded landscape. His focus veered from trees to foliage to candid shots of the hikers. Maybe he worked for Glenn Pines. That would explain why he cut in on her conversation with Sharon and why they seemed to know each other better than a receptionist and a guest might otherwise. Although he was missing the chipper gene. Would they end up back at the activities center facing a wall of photos to purchase like at an amusement park?
Alyssa made sure she stayed out of his camera’s eye. She looked a mess, felt worse, and didn’t need to see the evidence on a five-by-seven glossy.
Clickety-click.
She looked up to see the camera’s lens pointing in her direction. “Hey. Don’t do that. I don’t want to buy any photos.”
“Good, because they’re not for sale.” A smirk insinuated itself on his mouth.
“Don’t you need my permission to take my picture?” Her hands went automatically to her hips—her “meaning business” pose.
“Only if I want to sell it.” He snapped another picture. “But that scowl on your face would never sell.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My review: Alyssa needed a change and was hoping a vacation at a mountain resort would be just the thing for adventure. She was looking forward for some yoga, a massage, and meditation. Little did she realize that she was signing up for a boot camp program, which included hiking, kayaking, and mountain climbing. Mountain climbing? Seriously? Still, she was determined to stick it out. After all, this was her chance to “fix Alyssa.”

There, she meets Gabe, an overworked, artsy, and famous photographer. The last thing she needed after the last two failed relationships was a man, especially one as brooding or as arrogant as Gabe.

Well-written and captivating! I found the characters enjoyable and very relatable. Each character was at crossroads. Can they help each other figure out their next move? Was there a future for the world traveler and the homebody?

A sweet and courageous love tale! A wonderful romantic read from start to finish.

My rating: 5 stars

YA Paranormal Mystery

Date Published: May 25, 2021

When Meghan’s mother suddenly disappears without a trace, she and her two little sisters are the first to notice, and the only ones who seem to care…

The problem, of course, is that her mother likes to party, so when she goes missing, Meghan not only has to take care of everything at home, but she also has to search for her, because her mom has a bad habit of disappearing, so no one else is officially looking. That is until Meghan begins to receive mysterious messages, almost as if someone or something is guiding her to a haunted hotel in Manhattan, where people say an elevator game will take riders to the mysterious 13th floor. Some say it’s an entrance to hell, others a portal to another dimension. Either way, Meghan must brave the game in hopes of discovering the truth behind her mother’s disappearance.

EXCERPT:

Hello World

The car ride back to Middletown feels different this time around. Realistically, I know that aside from the early spring blossoms, nothing has changed. The ride back from Albany is no different than before. The route is still the same. The car is still the same. But I’m different now. On this Wednesday afternoon, I’m not only a high school senior or a military recruit. I’m officially sworn in. I’m officially an airman. Me. Meghan Marie Martin. I’m an airman. In a little over a month, I’ll be eighteen years old, and in a little more than three months, I’ll be heading to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, where I’ll start basic training and a new chapter of my life. Goodbye Middletown. Hello World.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Mom asks, startling me out of my reverie.

“Oh…” I look over and can’t help but admire her profile. To me, my mom is the most beautiful woman in the world. She’s a true bombshell. Blonde. Blue-eyed. Built. She’s a little rough around the edges, and her reputation, unfortunately, precedes her, but she’s my mom, and I love her.

“You have to quit worrying so much,” she says as she reaches over and places her hand on my thigh.

I stare down at her hand for a moment and realize today marks yet another special occasion: my mother is sober. It’s a rarity nowadays, and a rarer day yet when she’s sober and motherly. Though, in her defense, Maggie May always tries to be a good mom. Most times she falls short on that, but I have to give credit where it’s due. She tries.

On that note, I put my hand over hers and intertwine our fingers, my skin so much darker in comparison. When I was younger someone had told me we were like chocolate and vanilla. I don’t remember who, but the saying has always stuck even though my mom isn’t pure or sweet and I’m not rich or dark. I’m mulatto. I’ve been told that word is dated and offensive, but I’ve always liked it, and it’s much better than the other things my sisters and I have been called. Mocha being another favorite. Oreo being one of my least.

“Your run times will get better the more you practice,” Mom assures me with a squeeze of her hand.

“I know,” I say, my future military physical fitness test being the least of my concerns at the moment. “I’ll be ready by summer.” Though I am worried about the heat. Texas in July, I’m told, is brutal. As a born and bred New Yorker, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to handle it, especially under such stressful circumstances. Great. I hadn’t been worried about it a second ago, but I am now.

“I know what will take your mind off it,” Mom offers as she exits the freeway.

“It’s not only that,” I say as I try to figure out where she’s going. “I’m just…” I glance over at her, the bags under her eyes noticeable even from this angle. In the past couple of months, since I started my recruitment journey, it’s like she’s aged ten years. Or maybe, now that I know I’m leaving, I’m starting to truly see her. I’m starting to realize how much I do for her, and I’m wondering if she’s going to be okay when I leave.

“You’re what?” she inquires as she weaves across two lanes of traffic to pull into the parking lot of a nail salon.

“I’m just worried about you and the girls,” I finally admit, then I eye the salon suspiciously. “What are we doing here?”

“I’m treating you to a pedicure.”

I roll my eyes. “Mom, I can do my nails at home for—”

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” she says as she throws the gearshift into park, pulls the key out of the ignition, and then turns to face me. “But you’re an airman now and your recruiter is worried about those ingrown toenails—”

“Mom—”

“No, ma’am,” she says, wagging her finger in my face, “just because you’re an airman and this close to being an adult doesn’t give you the right to interrupt me. And don’t try to talk me out of it either. I know we don’t really have the money and I know we can do your nails at home, but here’s my motherly advice to you, Peanut,” my nickname for as long as I can remember, “always make sure you spoil yourself just a little bit. Otherwise, all that hard work with no play doesn’t ever pay off. You understand?”

I nod even though I don’t agree. The thing is, once my mom gets an idea in her head, it’s nearly impossible to get her to change her mind, so I don’t waste my breath. Instead, I try a different tactic. “I thought you said you had someplace you needed to be today.”

Mom snorts. “It’s way past noon, baby, so there’s no chance of sleeping in today.”

My brows furrow as I try to pick apart that particular mom-ism.

“Besides,” she says, “this is more important. My baby is almost all grown up and gone.”

When her eyes get all watery, I reach over and squeeze her hand. She’s been on this emotional rollercoaster the past few weeks. I mean, I get it. I’m leaving, which is hard and scary for me too, but I can’t express those feelings in front of her, because I’m her rock. If my dam breaks, hers will come crumbling down too, so I smile to lighten the mood.

“You’re still stuck with me for a couple more months,” I say as I throw open the passenger-side door and get out before the waterworks start. “You think they have an Air Force blue nail color?” I ask before I shut the door.

Mom gets out of the car and hurries after me. “I don’t think blue will look good on you,” she says, her voice back to normal. “Remember we tried it once when you were in elementary school.” She pulls the door open, the strong smell of chemicals practically slapping us in the face. Thankfully, the potent odor is enough to keep Mom from coming apart at the seams over that particular Easter memory.

“Right,” I offer as I hurry over to the sign-in sheet. “You getting your lip waxed today?” I ask without looking her way.

“No…” she says, but then she steps over to one of the mirrors. “Why? Do I need one?”

I shake my head. “I mean, I think it’s okay…” I intentionally leave that sentence hanging.

“Maybe I should?” Mom says just as a young, petite Asian woman makes her way over to us.

“I’d like a pedicure, please,” I tell the lady.

“Yes. Pedicure,” the woman replies, her Vietnamese accent thick. “Go pick color,” she orders while pointing toward the carousel of polishes.

I dutifully walk that way, but my attention remains focused on the conversation between my mother and the woman. They go back and forth about the price for a moment before they settle on a good amount. Then the lady signals my mother to follow her to the back for her lip wax. Relieved they’re gone, I swipe a pretty, red polish off the shelf and then hurry to the counter.

I set the polish in front of the elderly Asian woman and smile. “Hi. I’d like to pay for my pedicure now please.”

“You pay now?” she repeats, her English just as choppy.

“Yes, please,” I say as I quickly grab my wallet from my back pocket and retrieve my debit card. I’ve been saving my meager Dollar Store paychecks so I have extra money to enroll my sisters in a summer day camp program that begins right before I leave. Mom isn’t great at budgeting, and in the summer she always blows through cash trying to keep my sisters entertained, so the day camp will hopefully kill two birds with one stone: Mom won’t run short on funds and my sisters won’t kill each other out of boredom. If I had to bet though, I’d say my plan will partially work. The day camp will wear the girls out. My mother, unfortunately, will undoubtedly blow through her budget anyway, and so by virtue of her lack of restraint, I’m learning the art of saving. I won’t let my little sisters suffer the way I once did.

“You need receipt?” the woman asks after swiping my card.

“No, thanks.” I pocket my wallet and then follow her to the pedicure chair. I hadn’t planned on anyone working on my feet, so I’m a little embarrassed when I toe my sneakers off and see all the holes in my socks. Thankfully, at this time of day, in the middle of the week, I’m the only one in the shop. I quickly snatch the socks off my feet and stuff them into my pocket, then I slide onto the chair. I’ve just gotten comfortable when Mom emerges from the back room, her upper lip a bright red.

“What color did you pick, Peanut?” she asks as she makes her way over.

I point at the bottle the woman had set on her pedicure cart.

Mom nods her approval. “I like it!” she says with a whistle. “Subtle but sexy.”

I wasn’t going for either, but I thankfully don’t have to point that out because Mom is already on her way to the door.

“I’ll be right back,” she says as she fishes a pack of Marlboro Reds out of her purse.

I watch her disappear outside. She goes and leans against the hood of the car, lights up, and then grabs her cell phone out of her purse. I have no idea who she’s calling. She used to talk to me all the time about her love life and her friends, but as I’ve gotten older—and I’ve started acting more like the adult—she’s been more secretive around me and the girls, which is a good thing. We don’t have different guys in and out of the apartment as much anymore, but that means Mom tends to disappear more and more often. I’m here now, so that’s okay. I’ve always been able to handle the girls. But what about when I’m gone? Will they be okay? Will my mother make the right choices for their sake?

As the woman begins my pedicure, I wonder about those questions and a million more. At the end of the day, I think joining the military is the best thing for me and for my sisters. I’ll be the role model they’ve never had, and I’ll be able to provide more for them because the military will eventually pay me more than the Dollar Store does. Not so much at first, when I’m lower ranked, but I plan to move up the chain as quickly as possible. Then one day, I’ll be able to come back to Middletown with my head held high. And then I’ll hopefully be able to get my mother and my little sisters out of this one-horse town.

My review: Meghan was a young recruit that took on the role of “adult” for her sisters as their mom fell deeper into depression and absence.

Once again, her mother has disappeared. Only this time, Meghan can’t help but feel that her mom was in trouble. She soon starts to investigate, backtracking to her mother’s latest whereabouts, which was often summarized in lengthy monologue.

Story has an easy narrative that captures and holds the reader for the most part. Soon, the plot settles on a slow and even pace, chronicling mostly Meghan’s school life and comprehensive search for her mother. The trail eventually leads to a supernatural mystery, which was fairly interesting, however, it takes a while to get to this point.

Overall, a decent mystery and a nice read.

My rating: 3 stars

Blog Tour: BODY CONSCIOUS by Ana Diamond

Body Conscious

by Ana Diamond

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE
: Romantic Cozy Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Mortician, Lily Reynolds is used to seeing bodies, but not the type murdered in her own funeral home. As Detective James Rivers zeroes in on her as the town’s number one suspect she must rise above the accusations and rumors to solve the case herself while keeping her attraction to the troubled detective at bay.

James has a past. The last time he let someone into his life she wound up dead. Vowing never to let that happen again he has sworn off dating for good. Until he meets Lily. In his gut he knows she’s not the murderer but pressure to solve the case puts him on the wrong trail while he struggles to keep Lily off the case.

Can she solve the case on her own or will their scandalous romance get in the way of proving her innocence?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
“That’s Detective James Rivers,” Abrams said. “He came all the way up from New York City to our little town in the scenic Hudson Valley. He’ll be the lead investigator on this case since I know you ladies will be frequent callers.”
“Let’s be clear, I’ve never called you,” Lily said. “It’s always been Shanna.”
Abrams gave her a coy smile. He seemed flattered by the idea.
“Nice to meet you, Detective Rivers,” Lily said, finally turning toward the man who approached them.
Her breath caught in her throat. She didn’t know what she had been expecting, but not this—the angelic face with large sky-blue eyes, pronounced cheekbones and silken black hair. The only part of him that matched her ideas of what detectives looked like were his tattooed arms. She should know; her dad had been a cop.
May he rest in peace.
But James’s tattoos weren’t subtle. Snakes slid up his arms, past his rolled-up shirtsleeves, coiling around his thick forearms and biceps. One corner of his mouth lifted as he caught her staring.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My review: Lily was a mortician at her family’s funeral home. A body shows up on the scene—one that didn’t belong to the home. Turns out the body may have been a murder, and Lily looked like the prime suspect. However, a newbie detective just didn’t think so and would need to prove it by catching the real killer.

All the rumors about Lily’s possible involvement were hurting the family’s business, prompting her to solve this case and fast. Could a rival funeral home stoop so low to win? Even commit murder?

A warring battle of the funeral homes. Who will win? And who will die?

Story was an easy read and easy to get into. It’s a fascinating mystery you’ll want to see ‘til the end.

A nice read!

Blog Tour: BATTLE OF THE BULLIES by Fenyx Blue

B attle of The Bullies

by Fenyx Blue

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE
:   Young Adult Contemporary
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Ebony, Eris, and Emani Robertson have been through so much more than most high school freshman.  When they were younger, they survived a school shooting that killed their friend and left their sister unable to speak.  After giving home-schooling a try, they enroll in a promising new academy, hoping for the best.  Unfortunately, they get the worst news.  They have become the targets of an anonymous group of bullies who call themselves The Dimes.  Can they bring down The Dimes all while trying to make it through the ninth grade?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
An excerpt from Anonymous
I can’t be late. If I’m late, they won’t let me in. I’ll be disqualified. This is the year  I win. I can’t be disqualified. I glance in the mirror and adjust my heather gray hood, slide on my black sunglasses, tug on my gloves, and step out of the car. According to  my navigation system, this vacant house is my destination, and I have  arrived. Eight cars are already here.
The white FOR SALE sign in the lawn gives me some comfort that  we may be safe here, but this annual meeting is risky. Having all of us  in one place tonight could mean revealing our identities to outsiders.  Anonymity is our strongest weapon. We can never lose it.
I glance at the cars, trying to match them to possible members in  my mind. One license plate reads QT PIE. How can we be a secret  organization with our cars on display like this? How can we remain secret  if members refuse to be discreet?
My phone says 9:59 p.m. I throw it in the back seat where it slides  under my AP Physics book. I have to be inside this house by 10:01 p.m.  Forget force, mass, or acceleration. I need to run. Ten steps. I climb ten more giant steps, sliding into the room as the  clock hand clicks into place.
10:01. A girl locks the door behind me. An envelope with my pseudonym written on it is on my chair. I am  the ninth girl to sit down. I resist the urge to sit at the head of the table,  but inside I know this is where I deserve to sit.
One year of effort comes down to this moment. I did my best. Ten  people dropped out of school because of me. No one at this table should  be able to beat that stat.
Last year, tears fell because of me! Terror reigned because of me! Break  ups, friendships lost, hearts broken….all due to me! But will it be enough  to be Number One?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My review: Story follows the journey of a 9thgrader as she contends with friendship, school, sports, and, of course, bullying. It has a simple narrative, which can be long and slow at times with a few too many characters. This would be a relatable story for almost any teen. A fairly good YA read.
