Legend (A Zombie Short Story)

“Don’t let em’ get me!” When I was a boy, my Ma had a horse whose leg fell into a Gopher hole, snapped clean in half. It suffered before we put it down, but the sounds it made were still more pleasant than this. That high pitch screaming is my partner Jonah. Most men are quick with their tongue, their gun or their feet. Jonah is quick with all three, which gets us in trouble from time to time.

“Just keep running!” I shouted. Normally it was law trouble, which made sense since we’re outlaws but today our trouble was different. Right now we’re hauling ass to the saloon because a posse is after us.

“What the hell is happening?” Jonah asked. His pistol flung back and sent lead into the pack of men that were on our tails like coyotes in heat. I fired my six shooters, pulled the hammers back and repeated. The bullets tore through dusty tattered clothes and burrowed into their bodies. One bullet went through the metal of a sheriff’s badge. It was the second hole placed in that badge, but this bullet didn’t send him to the tall man or give him a nice photo for his wife to remember him by. No, that sheriff kept on racing toward us, like he was a wolf leading his pack on a hunt. He was driven, much like he was fourth months ago, when I first killed him. We pushed through the Saloon doors and tossed two tables up against it. Then we went for the grand piano for good measure before I heard a husky voice say,

“The hell are you doing?” My head spun around to Old Roy, the owner of the overpriced hole.

“We got a posse after us!” Jonah shouted.

“No shit. For a hanging? What you boys do?” Roy asked.

“Not, that kind of posse.” I said.

“What other kind of posse could it be?” Roy asked. We all gathered together and Roy got an eyeful from the window. He scratched his scalp for a moment before shouting,

“Raven! We got coffin riders.” He turned to look at us. “Which one of you idiots pissed in a graveyard?” He asked. I looked at Jonah and he shook his head.

“Not a fan of graveyards, I don’t like to see a dead body more than once.” I replied. Roy rubbed his chain and then sighed,

“No graveyard…” he put his finger up and smiled, “y’all boys been pissing on Indian skulls?” He asked.

“No!” We shouted in unison. Roy shrugged and turned back toward the bar.

“Well that’s all I got. Last time I seen a Coffin Rider was when I let the snake out in an Indian graveyard.” Roy said. A long black haired woman with sunkissed caramel skin walked in. She beelined to the window.

“Damn it Roy!” She hollered.

“Wasn’t me! They’re after them idiots.” Roy replied. The woman looked over at us and then back at Roy.

“Graveyard?” The woman asked.

“Nope, but I think they’re lying.” Roy replied.

“We haven’t pissed on anything. I swear ma’am.” I said. The woman laughed and looked back out the window.

“I ain’t no ma’am and you did something. Because they’re coming for ya.” She said.

“This is Raven, she’s a Indian on her Ma’s side.” Roy said and Raven rolled her eyes.

“You’re being hunted by Coffin Riders...Or better put the living dead.” Raven said. “Coffin Riders are used as punishment for the disturbance of a tribal ancestor.” Raven said. She folded her arms over her chest, “They’re coming for you.”

“Last time we were anywhere near a red skin was three days ago and I swear to you, we ain’t disturb nothing.” I said. “Right Jonah?” It only took a moment of silence for me to realize what was going on, I tossed my sun beaten hat to the floor and shouted, “Goddamnit Jonah!”

“I didn’t know.” Jonah said.

”What did you do?” Raven asked. Jonah pulled out an old leather necklace with a black and white feather attached. “That’s a chief’s feather.” She said, I looked out the window at the posse, they hadn’t tried to storm the building. They stood still, staring at me through the glass. I could see the bullet holes that put them down the first time, hell a good amount of them holes were put there by me.

“I’m sorr-“ Jonah’s words were stopped by my fist greeting his jaw. He tumbled to the floor and I rolled my eyes,

“So how do we stop this?” I asked.

“You don’t. Your time is up. They’re coming.” Raven said softly. I shook my head,

“Bullshit, Roy said…” I pointed at the bar but Old Roy was nowhere to be found. “Where did he…” I spun around to look for Jonah but he was gone. My gun sprung from my hip and I aimed it right at Raven’s head, “What kind of witchcraft is this?” I shouted and she smiled. It started small and then grew into a conniving grin.

“They’re here!” Raven hollered and the Saloon doors shot open. The posse filled the room and were upon me. Teeth tearing away at my skin, blood running like a river along the floor. I screamed and then I heard the sweetest voice call my name.

“Billy, wake up.” She said. I shot up in a cold sweat, with only the candle shining to show Maria’s face. “You were having a nightmare.” She said softly.

“It felt real.” I said.

“I’ll get you some water.” Maria said.

“No, I’ll get it. A walk will clear my head.” I replied.

“What was it Billy?” Maria asked. I kissed her and pulled the sheet off of me.

“It was just a dream.” I said. The wood moaned under the weight of my barefoot and I was almost at the last step when I heard his voice,

“Hey, Billy,” I heard the gunshots before I felt the pain. Two shots in the dark and another outlaw was dead. I never thought anyone would remember me, but I guess you don’t know you’re a legend until after you're gone. Raven was right, my time was up.

Planet Dead 2

It's Finally Here!
It's only been a year since I started this self publishing journey but here I am with 7 books out and two down in my current series. Sometimes with the marketing and all the work that goes into the book after it's written I forget to take the time to enjoy the fact that I'm living my dream. I'm doing what I've always said I wanted to do.
So this is me taking the time to ignore the sales, the bills, and the stress. You did it! You set out to tell a story, to build a whole new world and people are loving it, some people hate it, but some people hate Entourage and that was HBO gold! So just keep pushing forward.
Okay now that the peep talk is done!

I got a few plans for the future:I'm looking into doing a YouTube channel.I'm starting a media company, based around helping authors on a budget.I'm putting together The Realm, which is gonna be a 3 book YA Fantasy released this year.Working on some Planet Dead tie-ins.Trying to make it through another day.
Thanks To Everyone That Has Pushed Me Forward This Year. You Guys Are The Real MVPs!

Short Stories & The Heartache They Bring ME!

So I've been working on this short story for a collection called "Mad Like Me," and I'm not sure if I'm over thinking it or if it just sucks. I mean when did writing shorts get so hard? I used to write short stories all the time and now it seems like I'm worried about the plot, the ending, character development. I guess in a way that shows that I'm growing as a writer, but does that growth have to come at the expense of pumping out a bad ass short?
I'm just going to break down the overall idea of my short right here so I can talk myself through it.
Title: UnfitWe have three characters for this story. Nurse Sarah (MC)Dr. Calvin AlexanderDonald Willaim Connor
The story surrounds Sarah who has requested Calvin's help in murdering Donald, a serial killer who murdered Sarah's daughter Dallas. Dallas was given up for adoption years ago but Sarah found her and had been watching her from afar. Sarah and Calvin work in a mental hospital and they helped get Donald placed under their care by making him seem unfit to stand trail.
They place Donald in a closed off section of the hospital and have him strapped to a bed where they plan on playing a deadly game of "Do you remember?" Where Donald has to remember or know some detail about his victims and if he gets a question wrong or refuses to answer then Calvin will do something very, very bad to him.
This game is all fine and fun for everyone except Donald and Sarah because Sarah has been lying about Dallas this whole time. Her daughter died years ago and she has created this fairy tale based on a young girl she met in the mall and began following until that girl was killed. Sarah is worried that Calvin will find out Dallas isn't her daughter and not only will he not want to date her but he will lock her up.
So now Sarah has two choices, own up to what she did or let the killer free and hope Calvin kills him before any of her lies get out.
So that did kind of help, I guess this is more of a twisted comedy, Sarah also hears a voice in her head, that as the story rolls on you realize she's talking to that voice and more or less telling her the whole story.
Well, hopefully, I can knock this out and get it to the publishers. I want it to come in under 10k, this is my first real deadline and it's freaking me out. I'm over thinking it because this run down seems ten times more simpler than anything else I was thinking today.
Thanks for letting me get this all out.
If you're a writer, keep writingand If you're a reader, go support a indie writer!

Writing & Marriage

Stan Lee's wife died.
Those are the words that fell from my wife's lips today. It's a heartbreaking statement. Not because I'm friends with Stan, (I do love the man, but I don't know him.) It's heartbreaking to hear as a husband and a creative soul. Stan and Joan Lee had 69 years together. That's 69 years of fights, 69 years of kisses, and many more countless things he's thinking about right now.
Yesterday I had a reader tell me I owe it to my readers to put out the best book that I can, and that what's out now isn't that. I wanted to act as if it didn't bug me, but my wife could see through the tough guy mask. She grabbed me by my face and told me I'm an amazing writer. She reminded me of all the good things people have said and reminded me that this is just my first year. I took the leap this year to write full time and it hasn't been all that fun (Writing has been amazing! Marketing, pitching and selling, that all isn't too fun.)
Yet, through it all my wife hasn't doubted me. She cheered when my paperback came in the mail. She held me when my father died and I couldn't string together the words, "I'm okay," much less write a book. She kept pushing me even when I didn't want it or when I thought I didn't need it. She kept pushing me forward.
I've been married for four years and in that time I've felt like I was drowning many of a time, but when I thought I would never see the surface or never get a bit of air back into my lungs. My wife pulled me back to the land of the living. She's my lighthouse in the storm as I sail through this crazy creative sea. So it's heartbreaking to hear that another creative sailor lost his lighthouse. I'm sure Stan had years of fearing he was drowning, only to be pulled from the waters by Joan.
My heart goes out to Stan and the rest of Joan's family. I don't know the pain that he is going through and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. She's in a better place now, smiling down on you, and making sure the waters remain calm.

Zombie Movies!

Well, welcome to the first real post of The Author's Casket, where I talk about most things horror and all things Planet Dead, why? Because it's my blog and I write it, duh!
So I've decided to watch a shit ton of Zombie movies as I'm finishing up "Planet Dead: Bloodthirsty" and getting started on the second book in the series. I've asked for some help with making a list but as we all know Social Media can be a wicked lover, one minute she wants you and is blowing up your phone at all hours of the night tell you to come over and the next she's telling everyone who will listen that she doesn't know you and doesn't know what you keep saying that you're in a relationship.
Yes, Demi Lovato, I got the restraining order and it cut deep.
Anyway, I've decided to start my Zombiefest off and just let people jump in with their picks as I got.
Oh, the reason I'm going all out with the zombies is because my next book in the Planet Dead series is gonna be an all out gore filled thrill ride, with crazy zombies, funny heroes, and blood, lots and lots of blood. So I wanted to make sure I have my head on right when I start it.
As of today 03/29/2017 I've watched:
My Boyfriend's Back (1993)
Anger Of The Dead (2015)
Now I'm not gonna get into a big breakdown on these movies, but I will tell you what's worth the watch. Now I'm sure many of you have heard that sweet little song My Boyfriend's Back, right? Well did you know they made it about a real zombie boyfriend who returned 15 years ago and needed to eat people to keep himself from decaying?

No! You didn't hear that because that's not real. I'm not sure what inspired the song but I can tell you, My  Boyfriend's Back is an awesome zombie movie. You have your comedy, you have your love story, and a mob out to get zombie blood. I think my favorite thing about this movie is the mom...even after her son became a zombie she still made sure he was eating right.

Now That's The Real MVP.

Anger Of The Dead was a random movie I found on Hulu, don't sleep on Hulu guys, it has a pretty big and good library of movies. So I saw this movie and I thought 'okay low budget horror movie, that's gonna just play in the background'
I was wrong, this movie was pretty good, it started off with a bang and went out on one as well. I'm not gonna say it's the best zombie movie ever but it was pretty good, it kind of felt like someone who watched a lot of walking dead and wanted to make their own fan movie.
Oh, shit haha it's like Walking Dead Fanfic. There is a Negan type person and A Rick type. They had a lot of concepts that were in the show and comics in this movie, like saying goodbye to your infected sister before shooting her. The whole opening felt like the beginning of the walking dead, I'm pretty sure they used the same song.
I think for what it was, it was a really good movie and part of me wishes there was more because you are left with some unanswered questions.
Anyway, if you wanna check those out I believe My Boy Friend's Back is on Amazon prime and like I said Anger Of The Dead is on Hulu.

Okay guys, it's time for me to get back to killing some zombies.
Oh I started up a wattpad account again, I'll write more about that later on.

You Know What's Hard....

I've been self-published for a little over a month now and while I could complain about a lack of sales and reviews, I won't. I love the fact that I even got it out there, it's the very first step towards what I want to do in life. Yet what I'm finding to be hard is the next step, my next project, my next move, my next anything!

I'm kind of at a stand still, I have my main novel that I'm working on and a mystery series that I'm plotting out, but I feel if I want to be a full-time author, I need to be taking more steps than just sitting down and writing every night.

I guess I feel that I should be bringing more to the table if I really want to make my dreams come true. So I started looking into audio books, online retail, and making a Youtube channel. I started looking up more ways to get myself out there, to find the people that want to read what I'm putting out.

What's hard is knowing you meant to be something and not fully understanding how to go about it. There are too many different avenues to go down, so I'm deciding here and now.

I'm gonna say fuck it and write....I'll figure the rest out as I go.

But I do want to do a YouTube channel, something horror based......

Someday

P.S: Check Out My Book Trailer! I think I did a pretty good job for my first time.

A New Dawn

Now I know I've been away for a while now and for that I'm sorry. A lot of things seem to keep me away from the computer, mostly life, but nothing keeps me away from getting a little horror in my life. These days you can get it any where, there's horror cons, horror movies, horror Netflix Shows (Which I couldn't sit through, I love the idea of werewolves but I really can't stand wolf movies, I don't know why). Yet the number one outlet that I went crazy for was TV. When The Walking Dead started I was Geek boy crazy, not only was it a comic but I could see zombies every week, it was a dream come true, then there came American Horror Story, hell even Zombie Land was gonna take a stab at tv. It pulled me back in time to the Twilight Zone,  Tales From The Crypt, And Fear It's Self days. Back when TV gave you a bump in the night and it seems that it doesn't plan on slowing down.
El Rey Network and Robert Rodriguez have teamed up to bring a cult classic to your living rooms. From Dusk Till Dawn is now a blood filled tv show that will take over your home and children March 11th at 9pm eastern. I for one love the first movie, and I was okay with all the ones that followed. I felt it could have been a stand alone movie but I understand there was still money to be made out of it. When I heard it was gonna be a tv show I thought 3 things. One "Finally vampires the way they should be, feared, and crazy" Two "I hope they don't mess this up, I hope they don't mess this up" And three "What the hell is the El Rey Network". Now let me a dress all these statements, from last to first. The El Rey Network is an American TV Channel that targets Latin viewers, sooo yes it will be in English, I would have watched it anyway I just would have had to break out my high school note books. The network came into this world in 2013 and was fathered by the vary man that gave us From Dusk Till Dawn The Show, good old Robert (His a hard worker, a movie, show, channel and I can't even get a blog out, makes you think huh). So moving on three to two.
I'm really hoping that they can bring some of the magic from the movie into the show, but after watching the trailer I kind of feel like they missed the mark.  They have a few people from the first movie and it's based off of the plot of part one and set within the world of the other two movies. Meaning we're following the Fuller family and the Gecko brothers but don't be surprised if at some point you see some story about the hangman or a run in with Buck from Texas Blood Money. I like the world and I love the whole idea of the movie, I mean Robert and Tarantino really made some magic there but I'm just not sure here. It seems more darker and they finally get deeper into why Tarantino's character Richie was so damn bat shit crazy. Yet it's just not pulling me in, maybe They'll show us more Next Tuesday when it kicks off on El Rey Network, if you don't have the channel don't worry cause I hear good old Netflix is picking up the show as well. So if Netflix is backing it, it might not be that bad.

I'm sorry I'm getting a knock off Supernatural vibe from it. Two brothers, one that may or may not see
things, take on the demons of hell, in this case the demons are vampires. But still it's horror on TV so check it one here's the trailer to give you an idea of what you're getting into enjoy.

Oh The Horror, The Horror!

Okay so just the other day my wife and I sat down and fired up Netflix in hopes of finding something scary to watch, which is always a hit and miss on Netflix. Well that night we found this documentary about the Amityville House called The Real Story: Amityville Horror. We took a moment to decide if we really wanted to sit through another Amityville let down, because just last year we sat down all ready for My Amityville Horror which was another documentary about the house, told through an interview with one of the Lutz kids. That movie was more about a washed up bad boy who had daddy issues than it was about what happened in the house. Watch at your own risk, I almost pasted out three times trying to get through that one. But this one stood out cause it wasn't about the Lutz family but about the Defeo murders.

I'm a true crime junkie so that just pulled me in, that and the fact that through out all these years, after making  ten movies no one has every done anything about the case. So we sat down and it was really enjoyable, they talked to a family friend, who answered questions about the Defeos. Then when you thought they were done they took on the Lutz's ghost story about the house, and answered tons of questions. How it started?, Did they know about the murders?, Why was the room red?  They moved into that house just a year after the murders. Who does that? Anyway the movie is worth the sit down if you enjoy the Amityville movies or the case or the book which is really good, way better than any of the movies.

Now they didn't talk to Ronnie Defeo, The Defeo that murdered his whole family, but I'm guessing that's because he always sounds high when your talking to him and his story changes every time someone speaks to him. But what I really want to know is why hasn't Hollywood just rebooted this whole thing. Forget the demons, the ghost and the evil pig, and use the real story. Six people were murdered in their sleep one dark night in Amityville. Only one person knows why and he isn't talking. The way they all died was odd, the cops still don't fully understand the case. That's what I would make a movie about, I mean true crime movies are killing it in the box office look at Pain and Gain and The Wolf Of Wall Street. If I was making this movie I would tell it through the eyes of a cop on the case or if you really wanna go dark through Ronnie's eyes.
Here is my set up for the trailer. You would start off with a shot of black, then fade in wooden stairs. You hear a news reporting of the murders as the camera shows a pair of dirty boots and a rifle make it's way up the steps. Then you here a police officer ask "Why did you do it Ronnie?" The Feet stop at a door and you here the Rifle being loaded. "Why did you do it Ronnie?" You hear two loud blast, then the sound of the footsteps moving faster, a louder "Why did you do it Ronnie!" Followed by two more Shots. The Camera starts zooming out and you see Ronnie kick open the door, it's zooming back racing down the steps, out of the front door, which stays open till the whole house is in the shot. Then you hear two more blast from the weapon and the door slams shut and you hear "You wanna know why?" A laugh and then "Because I could"
Fade to black, pop on the Title in red bleeding letters The Amityville Horror: Night Of Evil or the beginning or whatever you want to call it. I just think that this would be a better movie than watching a house that may or may not be haunted. With that said the movies weren't all bad and as I said the book is great. But this is 2014, time to rethink things and take some risk Hollywood.

Come on I can't be the only one that thinks this.

Zombies, Zombies, Zombies

So my first day of really horror blogging and it's the night that The Walking Dead comes back. Like always it was great, I love the show and I'm loving the comic book as well. I never really knew about it till the show started, now I got myself one of those thick books and I'm learning just how amazing the base material is. Now as far as tonight's show goes, it was great but mostly because I've been dying to see it again. But Honestly I'm not really into Carl based story lines. He annoys me, I hate the way he treats his father, or the fact that he feels he can hang with the big boys. Yes his a great shot but clearly he can't handle himself beyond the handle of a gun.
There were two times where I was just about to jump up and down to scream "Eat him, eat that little shit" okay fine I jumped up and down. But sadly I'm going to bed unsatisfied. Now I'm new to this blogging so I don't really have a format of how to get my thoughts out, so It might seem like I'm jumping around, but I'm gonna try and stay on track. my main thing about Carl is his got a big lack of respect, I'm not fully sure when he turned into this bad ass, he had one shooting lesson from what I recall. Yet they keep pumping him up as this super soldier kid, who's lost his childhood, and his mother and now his just out for blood. He doesn't respect his father of anyone in the camp if you ask me, his always running off getting into some kind of mess. Just talking about him gets me heated. Yes I'm a 26 year old who hates a 13 year old boy on a made up TV show, I understand I might need to talk to someone about this.
So aside from me wanting Carl to die, the rest of the show was great. I love finally seeing part of  Michonne's back story and I really hope that they show us some more. It seems like their really staying true to the comics with her, bringing in her boyfriend, and her son. The dream was great but I think she really needs her whole stand alone story line much like the Governor got. What I also liked was that Ad for Salem. I'm looking forward to it because I love just learning about the witch trails, I hope that this can bring witches back to TV in a better light, I'm sure it will do way better than America Horror Story has done, I haven't liked that season at all, I really feel like they dropped the ball.

Well anyway, I'm hoping my next post will be better wrapped up then this one, it's the first give me a break. Somethings I'll be talking about in the future is The Walking Dead comic, and The Rise of The Governor. I'm also going to post every Friday, maybe not this Friday, but next week the top 5 horror movies on Netflix to watch so your not just hoping around reading every little bio to find one good one.
So in closing
Carl sucks
Rick almost gave me a heart attack
Michonne has always been a bad ass
Salem looks good but we'll wait and see

So thanks for taking your time to read this and enjoy your day.
