Dowsing for fish….

Every fall the bluefin tuna run into Cape Cod Bay and people go out with their boats to harpoon them. The boats are anywhere from 30 to 50 feet long, there’s a stand on the bow you go out on to “stick” the fish, which can be seen on the surface sunning itself. These fish … Continue reading "Dowsing for fish…."

Dowsing tales…True? Magic? Your lying scribe?

The stories that come to me fall in the category of adventure/magic realism, and I confess to treasuring those things in life that remain unexplained, mysterious, and hence magical. To me, one of the mist powerful indicators that magic might be real lies in dowsing. Most people think dowsing – finding water with a stick … Continue reading "Dowsing tales…True? Magic? More dowsing

This podcast I did a few weeks ago mainly about water dowsing, telling some true tales of my experience with it. You can decide whether this is true or not. It is ALL true, I promise. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...

A sea story about Watergate and January 6th – Updated

This weekend I’m thinking about Watergate, the scandal that began when some operatives burgled a Democratic office and got caught. That happened in the run-up to the 1972 election, which Nixon won hugely, in June I believe. I was fishing then, off New England, chasing offshore lobster in Lydonia Canyon out on the edge of … Continue reading "A sea story about Watergate and January 6th – Updated"

A sea story, sort of, about Watergate, January 6th, and Monomy Island

That happened in the run-up to the 1972 election, which Nixon won hugely, in June I believe. Fire at sea and complex systems…

Fall, 2021: So as I write this that ship is still burning north of here about 40 miles (I am in Port Angeles as I write this), with the situation uncertain as to what happens next; there are all these drifting containers about 40 miles west of the coast which represent a danger to other … Continue reading "Fire at sea and complex systems…"

Ocean trade….

This is kind of a sea story, I guess. In 1984 I’d been working out of Fall River, Mass on a red crab vessel, Taurus, ten day trips to the edge of the continental shelf ranging from Virginia to Maine, deep water, catching red crab at 600 fathoms on 100-trap lines, butchering the crab, icing … Continue reading "Ocean trade…."

Screamers…..

When I was fishing on the East and Gulf Coasts a long time ago – actually a damn long time ago – there was a saying that wandered the docks. When boats tied up together in a port the guys working on the boats would talk to each other, on the dock or aboard boats … Continue reading "Screamers….."

A little perspective…

From November 2022: I’m still out here on the north side of the Olympic Peninsula and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. That container ship that was burning sits about 20 miles from me, north, across the strait, near Victoria, fire now contained, perhaps even out. That monster storm that came through was a big … Continue reading "A little perspective…"

Camping in the old days…..

My dad was a serious hunter and camper. He was in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II, he called them the “ski troops” but then they invaded Italy and fought all the way to Germany and war’s end without donning a ski once, and when my sister and I were little kids we … Continue reading "Camping in the old days….."
