The Wisdom of Kootaneeti for a Polarized World

Education is supposed to help us to define and understand the difference between the good and the bad. But what is good? And what is bad? Is that which is good – today, good – tomorrow? Is that which was bad yesterday, bad today as well? Such intellectually daunting questions are not even asked – let alone any …

Mana: The Mind

Let me begin with an engaging parable from my book Rishi Tales 2:

Long ago there lived a greedy person who always sought to easy ways to make quick money. He persuaded a Rishi to give him some sort of a magic spell which could make him rich instantaneously. The Rishi tried his best to dissuade him, but the person was rather too persistent. Eventually, when this individual turned into a pain, the Rishi reluctantly agreed. He said “I will give you a magic spell, and a Rakshasa (goblin) will appea...

How to Calm a Disturbed Mind?

The mind is key to everything you do. Your success or failure is often a direct reflection of your state of mind. Mind that is focused has boundless potential, whereas a mind that’s disturbed cripples all possibilities. Calming a disturbed mind is, therefore, the key to achieving all that one intends to.

The only constant in this world is change itself. Millions of cells die, and millions regularly created in this body. Your mind continually changes its perceptions, thoughts, ideas, and opinions...

Bhakti versus Bhranti: Understanding the crucial difference between Devotion and Delusion

A lot is made of “Bhakti” by commercially driven “spiritual” institutions and individuals. “Bhakti to Guru is crucial,” they often say. “Bhakti” to such opportunists is little more than absolute and unquestionable loyalty to the Cult and its leader, often labeled as “Guru.”

Guru is not a “spiritual leader”; a Guru can be anyone who has taught you something crucial in your life. A true Guru seeks nothing; expects nothing. The Guru consists of two words, namely Gu meaning Ignorance and Ru meaning...

Why Meditating is not the same as Praying?

Dhyana or Meditation and Prarthana or Prayer are never the same. Prarthana is a concept in which you declare yourself to be weak as well as helpless and, therefore, you seek help from someone else - earthlings or God(s). Dhyana or Meditation is where you accept that for all the pains in life you alone are accountable, that you alone can clean the mess you create. Meditation is about seeking solutions from within. You must be a theist to pray, but even an atheist can meditate.
