The Christmas That Almost Never Was

Have you ever experienced something completely amazing and unexplainable? Some may even go so far to call these events a miracle. Well let me tell you I believe in miracles. I never did before what I’m about to share with you happened, but ever since that fateful night I know deep in my heart that miracles happen. There is magic out there somewhere, just waiting to happen to the right people at the right time. The right time for me and my family happened on a cold and hungry night in late December, Christmas Eve to be exact.
I am a hard-working father of two beautiful little girls. They are so full of life and a magic that it fills me with joy to come home after a long day out in the fields and see their bouncing little steps as they dive into my arms and hold me as if they haven’t seen me in weeks. That is why my heart was so broken on this frigid Christmas Eve. I own a farm and this season was particularly bad. All our crops failed. Not a single sprout of corn burst into the light of day. We were out of money and the cupboard was completely bare.
My precious wife was such a savior in the beginning of our troubles. She knit sweaters, scarves and mittens just like grandma used to make and hiked the many miles to the town market and sold what she could almost every day. She even gave some of her wares to the poor children that wandered around the streets of town. She is the most loving and generous woman that I have ever known. Unfortunately, even the fruits born by her efforts came to a halt. We weren’t the only family suffering a crop failure in our neck of the woods and it was beginning to take its toll on everyone.
As time slowly ticked away so did our food supply. At one point, we still had some grain left over from last season, but human stomachs were not the only ones that had to be fed. There was our faithful horse Walter who worked just as hard as all of us, and the cows and pigs we raised for food and milk. When the last bit of grain was served, we had no choice but to begin selling off our livestock. Every pig and cow in the field was sold to the highest bidder, most of the time for a simple bag of stale grain. Even Walter had to go which broke my heart.
Time passed and here we are on that fateful Christmas Eve. It was seven o’clock on the dot and we were all gathered around the dining room table just looking at each other’s empty faces. We had set the table with our best china in hopes that our neighbors would come by with a surprise bit of food. There was no chance however. It had already snowed fourteen inches in the past two days and there was no sign that it was going to stop. I had even cut down a nice little pine tree the other day to at least attempt to bring a little Christmas cheer into our lives. It only served to depress us further though as there were no decorations on it, and even worse no presents under it.
As the clock struck seven what we knew to be the worst Christmas Eve ever became even worse still. In the blink of an eye our power went out. We were completely in the dark. I managed to find a candle and matches but unfortunately the matches were wet from snow that had melted and dripped through a crack in the roof. In a fit of anger, I threw the unlit candle across the room and that’s when the miracles began! The candle never hit the wall. In a dazzling display the candle appeared in mid-air lit up like the fourth of July! But that wasn’t the only thing to appear. Holding the candle was an angel, an honest to goodness angel! She had the most beautiful wings I had ever seen! As we all stood there frozen in place the angel put her finger to her lips and slowly moved the candle in a wide circle so we could see around the whole room. Where there was once an empty table, there was a full course meal. Where there was once a bare pine tree, there was the most beautifully decorated Christmas tree I had ever laid eyes on. And best of all, where there was once an empty space under the tree, it was full of expertly wrapped presents for our two beautiful daughters.
In the blink of an eye she vanished, but the light remained and so did everything else. We ate what was the most delicious meal ever in complete silence and the biggest grins you have ever seen in your life. After the last bite was eaten we gathered around the tree and opened the angelic gifts full of awe and wonder. The girls received just what they had wished for in their hearts with laughter and joy as me and my wife held each other and watched full of love and contentment. There was even a gift for me and the Mrs. under the tree. A big bag of gold to be exact!
It’s been one year since this beautiful miracle, and now our eyes shine a little brighter, our smiles stretch a little wider and our laughter is just a bit heartier. There’s magic in our souls now, a magic that will never fade away. Oh, and guess what? There was enough gold in that bag to buy back Walter and keep us afloat this whole past year and even into next. We never saw that angel again but we don’t need to. She will live in our memories always in what was almost the Christmas that never was.

The Choice

Transcript of an award winning speech I gave on October 14th, 2014.

You're standing in a field gazing up into the clear night sky.

You behold all the glory of the heavens.

A never-ending multitude of brilliant pinpoints of celestial light - twinkling in the distance.

Beckoning you with an irresistible call of curiosity and wonder.

You look down at your legs as a mischievous grin overpowers your moonlit face.

You look back up to the sky and say to yourself "Why not?!"

With a single leap you SHOOT OFF into the air like a ROCKET!

The wind WHIPPING past your body as you BURST forth from the clouds.

A layer of moisture coating your skin like the morning dew.

You ZOOM through the outer reaches of the earth's atmosphere as you break the sound barrier with a bang SO loud...

That all the earth's inhabitants stop what they're doing...

And turn their eyes towards the heavens in complete and utter confusion.

And in the blink of an eye you are gone
soaring - into the deep unknown.

You weave your way past comets -
their tails of ice sparkling in their white, blue, and silver magnificence against a background of midnight black.

You duck - and dodge - as you find yourself in the middle of a passing meteor shower -
its ancient rocks cracked and marred with the scars of unknowable calamities stemming from unknowable places.

You dive and leap your way past a multitude of planets, moons, and stars until the frequency of your encounters with them diminishes.

You have reached the outer limits of your home galaxy - the Milky Way

And finally - the entire universe is yours.

You continue your journey through the unknown black of night -
speckled with the most dazzling displays of pyrotechnics mankind could ever even IMAGINE.

Until you come to a sight SO AMAZING you must stop and rest on a small moon so you can take your time to gaze upon the most miraculous event you have ever seen.

Your eyes are glued to the heart of a nebula, the cradle of interstellar life.

You watch as billowing clouds of multicolored glass and elemental dust gather around a central point -
and melt together in an explosion of nuclear fusion SO intense you cannot believe you survived -
as the heat of a million furnaces, and the brightness of a billion suns, blows past you at the speed of light before you even knew it was there.

As you gain your composure, a giant sphere of light emerges from the dust that sparkles like powdered diamonds - as you stand in awe.

You have just witnessed the birth of a star - the apex of creation.

With unspeakable joy and urgency you decide to fly back home to share with all your friends the unbelievable display you have just seen.

As you approach the Milky Way, however, you come to a halt and hover in place as you stare in revulsion at the center of your home galaxy.

A giant, gaping vortex is staring back at you-
swallowing anything and everything that comes into its vicinity - even light itself.

This, my friends, is a black hole -
The celestial embodiment of death.

You shiver all over as you try to shake this image from your mind, as you continue on your journey.

And then you remember the unspeakable joy you received from witnessing the birth of a star as you wind your way home, and make a gentle landing in the same field from where you started this mind bending adventure.

The trip we have just taken has contained many amazing events, but two of them stuck out in stark contrast to each other.

The miraculous birth of a star -
And the voracious consumption of a black hole.

So what's the difference?

What makes one so breathtakingly beautiful, while the other is so dreadfully repulsive?

Well - the answer lies in a choice we must make every single day.

A choice that is intertwined in the very fabric of the universe itself.

On the one hand we have the birth of a star and all the majestic glory and beauty that goes along with it.

It emerges from its cradle and takes its set place in the heavens - while planets form and orbit around it - basking in its light and heat.

Planets that could be just like our earth.

Our sun is a star - and what does is do for us?

It provides heat to keep us warm in the cold winter months.

It emits light - to be a guide to our steps, and to be a beacon in the worst of storms.

It causes plants to burst forth from the ground and produce life giving food.

And therein lies the secret to its beauty.

It gives light,
It gives life,
It simply gives...

On the other hand - we have the black hole and all of its life sucking, all consuming rapaciousness.

It dwells at the center of every galaxy - an ever present drain upon all that surrounds it.

Its gravitational pull is SO strong that NOTHING can escape its deadly hunger.

Not matter,
Not sound,
Not even light...

It fills its belly until it gets SO heavy - and SO dense that it finally collapses in upon itself and dissipates with barely a sound.

It becomes as if it never was.

And therein lies the secret to its ugliness.

It takes, and it takes
All for itself
It is the epitome of greed...

Ladies and gentlemen, everyday we are presented with a choice.

We can choose to give, and thereby receive life...

Or we can choose to take, and thereby receive death...

Let us choose to emulate the birth of a star and shed our light upon a cold and calloused world.

Let us give warmth to the cold,
food to the hungry,
and directions to the lost.

Let us provide instruction to those who are ignorant and willing to learn,
provisions to those who cannot take care of themselves,
and let us be a living witness of the prosperity that comes from living a productive life of hard work and good character to those who CAN take care of themselves - but choose not to.

Let us be servants of all, and masters of none.

Let us breed stars ladies and gentlemen.

Let us BURST FORTH with the brilliance of creation itself, so that our faces may shine with the light of a thousand suns.

Let us choose life,
Let us GIVE life,
So that true abundance, peace, and prosperity may be received by all...

A Call to Valor

Originally published at http://www.rebeccabender.org/blog/?of... on September 3rd, 2016.

What would you say if I told you that we can change the world? Would you scoff and laugh? Or would you lean your ear in and listen? This is a call to action to every man across the globe to rise up and be a man of valor; a man of Christlike forgiveness and understanding; the man God has created you to be.
Our world is suffering a tragedy today that has been repeated throughout history and is one of the main causes of the downfall of society. Men, we treat our women like the dung beneath our feet. We are not men, we are cowards and children. Allow me to share a story taken from the pages of history that should alter your thinking and pierce your heart. This is a call to action gentlemen. Rise up!
I want you to picture the following scene. A woman (a sinner some would call her) walks into a room in a small home somewhere in the outskirts of Judea. She is trembling and shaking with fear. Sweat is pouring from her brow as she carries a large jar of expensive ointment that she has purchased just for this occasion. As she enters the room she sees a man sitting and talking to one of the local “religious” men of the area. She knows that the man seated is the Son of God Himself and that he can heal her of all her past pains and sufferings, all her insecurities and fears, and yes her sins too. She steps ever so carefully as her legs begin to buckle from the swelling torrent of emotions swirling through her heart and mind. She falls at His feet and begins to weep in torment. Her tears fall in what seems like buckets upon her Saviors feet as she takes her long beautiful hair and proceeds to wash the feet of the man who can help her in one of the most valorous acts of humility ever recorded in the history of the universe.
The religious man, a Pharisee, scoffs at her and condemns her, in one of the most cowardly and unmanly ways. He is this coward I wrote of; a child. He is not a man. The Son of God, Jesus Christ, begins to share a parable with the man and in turn condemns him, for he has not the love of God. It is this woman, this supposed “sinner” who has been blessed by that most miraculous gift; love.
This is the story of Mary of Magdalene, probably the most famous prostitute in the history of the world. Most men read this section, which is found in Luke 7:36-50, and think perhaps that she was only crying because she felt bad for the things she had done in the past. But I am here to educate you in the fact that this was not the case. It was a far more tragic one then simply feeling bad.
Prostitution is not the glamorous life that most men seem to think it is. It is not all about easy money and cheap sex. It is about heartbreak; it is about pain, suffering and agony; it is about the epic destruction that us men wreak upon society with our lusts and perversions, and it is time for it to stop right now.
Perhaps her tears were the result of an overflowing of memories of when she was kidnapped as a child and sold as a sex slave where she was drugged just to keep her quiet as men had their way
with her. Perhaps as an innocent teen she was lost and reaching out for help with a ride home and was picked up by a seemingly nice stranger. Little did she know she would be locked in a small room and abused for 7 years. Perhaps some of these memories were not her own but stories of others she knew that suffered a similar fate. Maybe her best friend had her tongue removed with a soldering iron because she wouldn't stop complaining about her captors sexual demands. I realize that these words are hard to swallow as they should be, but they are not just my imaginations. These are actual events that have tragically happened to women in the recent past. But we need to hear them. As Jesus said, “the truth shall set you free.” Only through truth and education in the
right ways of life can change be affected. I ask all of you men a question? Where does your heart lie? Do you value your wife? Do you treat her with the respect and honor God commands us to give them? Do you teach your daughters about her place in God's plan and her value as a growing woman? Or do you go along with the flow and allow your lusts to consume you? The wrong treatment of women causes their hearts to be cauterized. They lose the ability to feel proper emotions and also lose the capability to love.
They also lose the ability to view sex as one of the most awesome gifts our Creator has given us. Only God can begin to heal a woman's heart but it's up to us men to be His willing and humble vessels.
God said that when a man finds a wife he has found a good thing, but I ask you this. What will we do when all of our women have been scarred by abuse and the devaluation that comes from us viewing them as sex objects? What will we do when we no longer have the help meets that God created us to have in our journey through life? What will we do when our daughters no longer have a proper family life? I tell you what will happen because it already is happening. Our society is crumbling everywhere around us because of the breakdown in family. If we continue in this tragic course we are truly doomed.
So I call you to action oh you men of Valor. Value your wife and love her. Treat her with the respect and honor that she deserves, especially if she has a past that requires mercy. Teach your daughter about her role in God's plan. And above all love, forgive, and be the Godly man that He has made you to be. We can do this gentlemen; we can do all things through Christ's love, mercy and power. Don't wait for the next man to begin because it will never happen. Do it now oh faithful reader, and do it with every ounce of power and might that our great God will infuse us with if we only take that first step. Our women need us. Our world needs us. Let's affect the change and be the solution. May God's power be with you and guide you along the way, oh Man of Valor!
