A tentacular spectacular …

Why does a giant squid, living in the deepest darkest parts of the ocean, need ink?

This excellent question birthed this magnificent tale from the sparkling mind of China Mielville. Of gargantuan aquatic gods and an inverse theology where heaven is in the depths below us and inhabited by indifferent angels.

As a writer, it is very hard not to love a chap who not only knows what a psychopomp is but builds one into his tale. He uses cathedral as an adjective.

He foreshadows with great subtlety and artistry. He uses so many 50c words and all to best advantage. In short, he breaks the rules and does it brilliantly.

This, my friends, is a tentacular spectacular.

All hail King Monkey

Ten thousand years!

May this original Asian super-hero get the reboot he deserves. Also, Tripitaka is out … and about.
