Book Review: Siren & Scion

Siren & Scion

Mages of the Wheel, book 3

by

J. D. Evans

With this being the third book in the series, I figured I had a good idea of what to expect. There would be a man and a woman, and they’d fall for each other, suffer complications, and sort things out. There would be a bit of action, a bit of sex, some magic shenanigans, and the overarching plot of the series would move forward a little bit.

It’s what I got from the previous books, and it worked really well with them, s...

Book Cancelled

It’s time to admit defeat.

With less than thirty days remaining until the planned release date, I’ve only written about two thirds of the first draft of Lost Dogs #10. The book was originally meant to be released two days ago, but I moved the date, and I’m not able to move it again.

This gives me two options:

Release an unfinished book.Cancel the release and publish the book when it’s done.

Put like that, it’s an easy choice.

Sure, the previous books in the series haven’t exactly been...

Introduction – Werewolves On A Train

It’s been a few weeks since I last shared a Lost Dogs Introduction chapter. What happened is that I ran out of books. I posted eight introductions, and the ninth one hadn’t been written yet – until now.

Last night, I finished all the changes to Lost Dogs #9, and I wrote the introduction chapter. This is one I’m really quite excited about, as it explains what I believe is the most unique mechanic of the world I’ve created – soul friction.

Here goes:

Do not move too fast, or you will tear your soul asu...

The Dullest Journey – Part 6

You will find the first part here, and the previous part here.

Sunrise.

Her favourite moment of the day. When the first rays of light crossed the horizon, and the world began to wake up.

Just a few seconds away. Toini sat back in her chair and gazed into the east. Arras, the ship’s first mate knew to keep silent, and he too turned to watch. Polly, the cat, ignored them both.

Toini smiled to herself. There might be kittens on board again. It was a hassle and a nuisance, but she loved it all th...

The Dullest Journey – Part 5

You will find the first part here, and the previous part here.

Toini stepped onto the bridge, grabbed her seat in the back on the upper level, and gazed out over the world. The sun had not yet climbed above the horizon, but the sky in the east was bright enough it couldn’t be more than a minute or two.

On the bridge, electric light from buttons and control panels lit up the darkness. First mate Arras sat in the pilot’s seat, and the ship’s cat, Polly, lay curled up on the navigator’s chair. She...

Introduction – North Into The Past

It’s Friday once more (yay), and it’s time for another Lost Dogs Introduction chapter. This one is from the 8th book in the series, North Into The Past, and it’s about elves.

Here goes:

The dwarves grew under the roots of the mountains. Present since the dawn of time, they remember everything.

The humans crawled out of the oceans and up into the trees. They plucked the fruits, climbed down again, and made the world their own.

The anfylk appeared in secret, created by the Lady who loves them. Spring and Summer. Autumn...

The Dullest Journey – Part 4

You will find the first part here, and the previous part here.

Toini and Dipali walked together back up towards the front of the ship. Two old friends. Two short women. Dipali was the only human aboard the Orange Cream shorter than Toini, and the only person who’d flown with the ship longer.

Dipali’s father had bought it new when she was five, and it was she who’d named it. She’d lived aboard ever since. It was one of the conditions for Toini to be able to take it over – that she let Dipali stay on as c...

Introduction – Three Howls in the Evening

It’s Friday, once more. That means it’s time for another Lost Dogs introduction. This time we will learn about the Midlands Union, one of the three largest nations in the world. It’s where the seventh book in the series takes place – as well as the eighth and ninth – so it felt prudent to include a brief description of what kind of place it is.

Here goes.

The Midlands Union.

Rich. Fair. Civilised.

The Union is all three.

The largest nation in the free world. At the centre of everything. A paradise of science and cultu...three.

The Dullest Journey – Part 3

You will find the first part here, and the previous part here.

Toini left the mess and headed aft towards engineering. She and her cup of coffee, stopping now and then to take a sip.

Not a long walk by any stretch. About half a minute at a leisurely pace. Most of it through the huge converted cargo space that separated the bridge and quarters from the engines.

When she’d taken over the Orange Cream, the ship had been a freight hauler. Sturdy as a rock, and about as interesting. Toini had no i...

Introduction – A Break in the Clouds

Once again, it’s time for an Introduction chapter. This time, the turn has come to Lost Dogs #6: A Break in the Clouds. Here, we’re introduced to the Kingdom of Viller, where Roy originally hails from. It’s a small and out-of-the way country, and it’s about as far away from Tin Jian as you can possibly get.

Here goes:

If you take the train as far west and north as you can possibly get without leaving the free world behind, you’ll end up in the Kingdom of Viller – or just Viller, if you live t...
