#Rainbowsnippets gets a buzz cut
Blimey, is it really the weekend again?? Evidently so as it's Rainbow Snippets time :) Today I'm giving you a few lines from my WIP. It's something I hadn't planned on writing at all but now I'm nearly 80K words in, I think I better think about what I'm going to do with it. This is Active Duty. Cover courtesy of a wonderful fan!
Featuring Jason, who made his first appearance in my Responsible Adult serial, who is now a Corporal in the UK Army, Infantry Regiment, based out of Catterick, North Yorkshire. He's been tasked with training the new recruits. Something that he never thought would lead to a complete upheaval in his life. The book is told from present day with unraveling flashbacks. This is from Chapter One, present day, where we see a little unease in our usual bold as brass Corporal Jason Williams...****The lad at the door ran a hand through his dark hair. Jason had told him to cut the lot off. Fuzz top. Not a requirement anymore, but that furry mound of dark locks that billowed in the wind while running laps pissed Jason off. Not to mention the lack of proper greeting. Eventually, the Private raised his hand, palm facing outward, and waited."Better." Jason saluted back."Jase...""That's Corporal to you, Private." Jason's fingers trembled at his side. He clenched them in defiance."Corporal.”****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. #Rainbowsnippets 7-8 October gets a wake up call.
Welcome to the weekend! I've had a massively busy, and rather constructive, week. I've written over 10K on my WIP and its shaping up nicely. For a story I never thought I would write, I'm actually loving it. Who'd have thought a side character in my Responsible Adult series might need his own book? So, in honour of that, I thought I'd do a snippet from Reformed (Responsible Adult #3), which is coming soon to Pride Publishing and out for general release on 5 December, featuring that very side character. Perhaps this was where it all started for Jason Williams ;)
****“You know what you did last night, right?” Micky licked the melting butter trailing his fingers.“What?” Jason asked, holding his stomach.“You snogged me.”“No, I fucking didn’t.”Micky widened his eyes in affirmation and nodded. Jason obviously couldn’t hold it in any further and rushed over to the sink to retch again. He had no contents left in his stomach, so his gut did a great job of letting him hack up nothing.Micky bit his toast with raised eyebrows. Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, Jason groaned.“Charming,” Micky scoffed.****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. #Rainbowsnippets laughs their arse off
Another weekend, another snippet! This time I'm going back to my work in progress, Love & Tea Bags.
Here we have Mark, hitting his forties, who has just met the young Australian, Bradley, and discovered he does a bit of stripping in his spare time. ****"Your act?" Mark licked his lips of the leftover spittle."You have an act? Isn't it just stand on stage and slowly peel your clothes off to I'm Sexy and I Know It?""Right, so you can't be that old. You just referenced LMFAO.""Of course," Mark agreed. "That I did. Down with the kids. Exactly. Good band."Please don't ask, please don't ask, please don't ask.Bradley arched one eyebrow. "What does it stand for?"He bloody asked.****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. #Rainbowsnippets 23-24 September gets Reformed
Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. Here in London we've actually had a little bit of sun! Here's my snippet for the week. This is from the third book in my Responsible Adult serial which is now up on Pride Publishing website as Coming Soon!
Reformed takes place in Wales, with Micky and Dan now trying to make a life together with Micky's little brother, Flynn.Of course, driving off into the sunset doesn't always mean that the intended destination will be filled with sunshine and roses. Especially when one half of the couple has to go to the job centre...****“I see here that your partner is no longer on the training allowance and is now a fully qualified teacher?”Micky nodded.“That’ll affect your benefits.” She scrolled through her screen. “Lucky you, that’ll mean you can come off income support.”The woman actually smiled. Gleefully.“Sorry?” Micky leaned forward, narrowing his eyes as he tried to catch a glimpse of whatever was on that screen.“You’re now a kept man, Mr. O’Neill.” She leaned back in her chair and clasped her hands over her stomach. “Your partner earns over the threshold. So you no longer have to come in here.”“But that’s Dan, not me,” Micky snapped, probably a bit too forcefully.“And he’s your partner?” She wiggled the mouse once more to read the details of Micky’s life and relationship status on her screen for all of the civil servants to peruse at their whim. He hadn’t even updated his relationship status onto Facebook.****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. #Rainbowsnippets gets a big heart
I missed last week's Rainbow Snippets, but I'm back with another offering from Hard Time (Responsible Adult #2) which went out on general release this week.
Here we have our two MC's, Micky and Dan, where Dan discovers just how much Micky hides and how much he does for his disabled little brother, Flynn, since the death of their mother. Dan was already smitten, but after this there's no way back...****“He wants to send it to Mum,” Micky explained. “We post his stuff here, then Mum gets to take it up to heaven with her.” He shrugged, nonchalantly. “Well, I take it and sometimes write a letter back.”“Oh, God, Micky,” Dan gasped, clamping a hand over his mouth. “How? You…”“You all right?” Micky asked, noticing the glisten forming in Dan’s eyes.“You think you’re like your dad,” Dan replied, waving a hand at the tatty Cornflake's box and sniffing. “But this—all of this. Everything you do.” He shook his head, his untamed hair wafting in the breeze, and looked Micky directly in the eye. “Your heart’s too big to be anything like your dad.”Micky snorted. “Couple of years ago, I wasn’t,” he admitted. “I was a selfish little shit. My dad taught me you use your fists to get what you want. It was Flynn who taught me different. Which is why I need him, Dan.” Micky pleaded with his eyes. “So much more than he needs me.”****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. #Rainbowsnippets gets a little Love & Tea Bags
It's the weekend again, so another snippet time! This week I'm going to give you a little taste of a Work in Progress of mine. Currently called Love & Tea Bags, this one is set in a rather quaint English seaside town and our MC is tea-loving Mark, hitting his forties and sinking slowly into a midlife crisis, who gets a new lease of life when he discovers his favourite tea shoppe (no typo, the Brits love to add an extra p and e to our shops now and then) is being looked after by one very hunky, not to mention quite young, Australian.
This snippet is from chapter two, where Mark has just met the young Aussie, Bradley, in awkward circumstances and discovers Bradley is the nephew of his best friend and tea shoppe owner, Macy. In this snippet, Mark is back at his dreary office and receives a call from Macy explaining her departure from the shop and why Bradley is now serving tea on her behalf.Mark discovers a little more than he bargained for...****Mark picked his mug back up and braced himself for further mouth torture. Seriously, how can one make tea so terribly? "He's also a stripper," Macy replied, nonchalantly. And for the second time that day, Mark had chosen the wrong moment to take a gulp of tea and proceeded to both spit out and snort in the liquid abomination at the same time. "He's a what?" Mark wiped his hand across his nose and wondered how much tea it was actually possible to snort in a day. A cup? A pot? An urn? Which was probably not what he should have been concerned with just then, considering his paperwork was now tainted with a lovely shade of Skimmed Alive. ****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. #Rainbowsnippets talks football. 19-20 August.
The weekend means #Rainbowsnippets time. Because there have been a fair few articles in the news recently about the acceptance of gay players in the English Football League, and with the coming out of the first gay Premiership referee, I thought I'd give a little snippet from my self-published title, The District Line. The District Line started life online on Wattpad, then made its way to the self publishing shelf and I am currently re working it now I've had the experience of being published and can use that knowledge to better the writing and the story. So, a little background... The District Line (which is a London tube line for those who might not know) follows Jay, a working-class east London lad, who's footballing career has had to take a hiatus when he's released from his professional premiership academy under dubious circumstances. To pass the time and attempt to get scouted by another club, Jay ends up on a sports scholarship at a local university and there he literally bumps head first into Mike Saunders, a wannabe rock-star from the other end of The District Line - the much, much posher end. This snippet is from the opening chapter where we get a little insight into what Jay has to deal with at home with his folks, who are both a little disappointed that his football career hadn't gone to plan...****“Football,” John shouted over the top of the local morning rag that he only ever read the back pages of.Jay glanced down at his born and bred cockney father seated at the kitchen table, who’d remained quiet throughout the delectable conversation with his mother, and narrowed his eyes.“That’s what you’re mind should be on.” John folded up the paper, slammed it onto the surface and slurped from his mug of milky builder’s tea.“That’s where the money is. Not in girls.” Scraping his mug from the table, he stood and dropped it into the metal sink with a clang. “You can have all the girls you want when you get back playing professional.”With that, John slapped Jay hard in between his shoulder blades to the point of almost winding him, grabbed his keys from the sideboard and left the house in much the same way his mother had. The low growl of the diesel engine from his father’s van masked Jay’s deep throated one.****The District Line is still available in its original form to purchase from Amazon and will be re-released in 2018.

#Rainbowsnippets wants to run away. 12-13 August
Running a bit late for the weekend's #Rainbowsnippets but I'm slipping up on the back to try get my six lines in!This week I'm sticking with Hard Time (Responsible Adult #2), which is now available for early download at Pride Publishing.
Here we have Micky, thinking he's going to lose everything, and how he plans to deal with that...****“Fuck all this, Dan,” Micky said more forcefully and scraped his hands out of his trousers to slap down to his thighs. “Why wait around in fucking limbo, letting other people decide what happens to me? To him.” Micky waved a hand in Flynn’s general direction and turned to finally look Dan in the eye. “To us,” he stated poignantly.“Micky—” Dan cautioned.“What, Dan?” Micky scorned. “This place is toxic. For me. For Flynn. I’ve never really understood that until now. Until you.” Micky twisted to face Dan and glided a thumb across his cheek. “There’s a shit ton of bad memories on every street corner here. I need to start fresh. You said you’d always come find me. Or wait for me... but will you follow me?”****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. #Rainbowsnippets discovers who they really are 22-23 July
The weekend is here and we have another snippet from Hard Time (Responsible Adult #2) out for pre-order this coming Tuesday 25th July from Pride Publishing.
This time, Micky does a little growing up.****“Dougie,” Micky started, pointing out to the dance floor, “you go out there. You go enjoy your birthday. Don’t give a flying fuck what people say ‘cause round here people’s lips flap before their brains kick in.”Dougie widened his eyes. Smiling, Micky caught Dan’s shifting gaze. Micky arched an eyebrow and Dan grinned with a further shake of his tail feathers. And at that sight, it wasn’t just Micky’s eyebrows elevating.“Be true to yourself,” Micky continued, eyes still firmly on Dan. “And when you are, you might find a few people discover who you really are.” Micky knocked back his pint. “And they’ll like it. For real.”****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. For those who don't know, Micky's brother in my Responsible Adult serial has a rare condition called Williams Syndrome, which my son also has, and this book, I hope, has inadvertently raised some awareness. Today (Saturday 22nd July) I'll be attending the annual Williams Syndrome picnic in London. It's a chance for all the families from across the country to come together for support and, mostly, fun. And my first royalty payment has gone straight into this event. So a big thank you from me!

#RainbowSnippets has a Hard Time keeping its mouth shut , 15-16 July
Another weekend, another snippet. Sticking with Hard Time, book two in my Responsible Adult serial, out for pre-order with Pride Publishing on 25 July.
Dan's finding it hard to keep his mouth shut around Micky...****All Dan could think about while he entwined his tongue with Micky’s, while he ran his hands along the hard ridges of muscles on Micky’s back, while his leg tingled against the coarse hair of Micky’s, was how he wanted to say it again. All the rules said he shouldn’t. All the rules said he needed to wait for Micky. To not push. To return to baby steps. Then he felt Micky’s breath on his neck as he planted delicate kisses toward his chest and the light hint of Micky’s tongue on his skin made it impossible to keep his mouth shut.“I love you, Micky.”****Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction.
