A Prayer for Peace in the Overwhelm
Prince of Peace,
Meet me today
in the Christmas overwhelm:
piled-up
cookie sheets, papers, emails
messy
trash cans, floors, bathrooms
disorganized
counters, purses, decor.
Lord of order,
All-knowing One,
You see my unsent packages
unfiled bills
unread books
And yet, you do not condemn.
You embrace me
in a rush of peace
right in the middle
of my kitchen
with my unwashed hair
and flour-covered apron:
a reminder
you helped Mary
face an impossible task
a difficult journey
a lowly birth.
All I want is to sit and rest
bundled up by the tree of lights
gazing upon your wonder
like Mary gazed upon your face:
such hope
in such darkness.
I want your slow peace
to steal over me:
Christmas peace
in the midst of my mess,
Christmas peace
to power me through
busy December
Christmas peace
to grant me hope
joy
and love
from your overflow.
Join me December 6-23, 2016 for a series of Christmas Prayers.

A Prayer for Peaceful Beginnings
Prince of Peace,
You came as two cells united
as all of us begin
woven together
in the most mysterious way.
You formed in the darkness
of a young girl’s womb
listening to peaceful rhythms
of heartbeats, blood
pumping, and murmuring voices.
Your presence a light
in darkness
before you were born,
before any of us
came to be.
Prince of Peace,
you entered the world
in poverty and darkness
your riches hidden
in matted hair
tiny eyelashes
slate blue gaze.
Your tiny fingers
grasped Mary’s hand tight,
little palms destined
for piercing.
She counted your toes,
kissed your forehead
never imagining thorns
pressed in flesh.
Yet she knew
you were the Messiah,
the holy one
destined to deliver peace
to God’s people.
Prince of Peace,
with you we celebrate
new beginnings
with ends yet unknown.
With you we celebrate
mysterious peace
in ordinary places:
amid rocks, dust, and straw
with sore feet and dirty clothes
after weary travel and stale bread.
With you we celebrate
peace that comes with new life
the hope that sparks
with new birth.
With you we celebrate
light piercing the darkness
as angels suddenly filled
the night sky
announcing peace
to God’s people.
Prince of Peace,
help us find your light
in our darkness.
Help us discover your peace
in our ordinary places
our weary days
our new beginnings.

A Prayer for Christmas Peace
Prince of Peace,
We know peace is possible
only through you.
In our days full
of planning and cleaning
shopping and wrapping
baking and decorating
we need your peace
which passes all understanding.
Prince of Peace,
we lay before you
our hustle and bustle,
our hurts and trials,
our anxiety and fear.
Let our hearts find no rest
except when we seek you.
Let none of our searching
lead to satisfaction
outside you.
Lead our hearts to peace.
Help us remember
peace once came through the impossible:
a virgin’s womb holding
the son of God, the Prince of Peace.
Help us live out busy December
knowing deep inside
peace is possible
only through you,
peace is possible
in our impossible,
peace is ready
and waiting.

Book Review: Brave Girls 365 Devotional
Brave Girls 365 Devotional by Jennifer Gerelds and Tama Fortner
I chose this book as a Christmas gift for my eight-year-old daughter, and she will be delighted with the stories and lessons inside. She will make new virtual friendships with all five of the Brave Girls: Hope, Glory, Honor, Gracie, and Faith. Each Brave Girl tells a bit about herself, and I appreciate that all of them share both strengths and challenges. They strive to be honest and grow in faith, just as I want my daughter to do.
This school year my daughter has experienced friendship struggles, school issues, and self-image challenges. I’m thankful for this devotional resource, which will help us navigate the tween years with God’s direction. I plan to carve out time daily to go through the devotional with her.
Each day is spoken in a particular Brave Girls’ voice, and I saw their personalities coming through. For example, I think my daughter will relate most closely to Glory, the Brave Girl who enjoys beauty in creation, art, and fashion. Glory’s devotions tie into to those themes. My daughter loves fashion, maybe too much sometimes. I think the devotion on January 2 will speak to her heart with Romans 13:14: “You want to fit in, and you just know those boots, those jeans, or that shirt will help you…But there is something you can wear that will help you make good and true friends–the attitude of Jesus.”
I like the varied day-to-day format, which will hold my daughter’s attention. Some days are stories in the life of a Brave Girl. Some are contemporary retellings of Bible stories. Others are about making wise choices, whether it’s picking the best of two scenarios or filling out a true/false quiz. Once per month, a “Write It Out” devotional gives your own Brave Girl a chance to jot down her thoughts and feelings. This book is interactive, always drawing your daughter back to the Bible.
This book is appropriate for girls ages 8 to 12. Its engaging content will inspire her faith and great biblically-based discussions. It is part of the Brave Girls series from Tommy Nelson, and I plan to check out more of the resources in this encouraging series for tween girls.

Today is a day of reflection. I encourage you to spend one day of Christmas break reflecting on God’s faithfulness to you in 2016, as I recommend in Christmas Peace for Busy Moms. See the book for several ideas of how to spend a day alone to reflect and refresh.
Today is also a day of celebration. I will announce a grand prize winner and share my favorite Christmas cookie recipe. Keep reading!
Please choose a post from this series, shown below, and reflect on how it inspires you to choose peace this year. I am praying God’s peace for everyone who participates, and I would appreciate knowing how this study helped you in the comments.
Peace With God & Peace in My Heart
Peace in the Marketplace and Parties
Questions for you:
Which post in this online Bible study has granted you the most peace?
To whom will you recommend Christmas Peace for Busy Moms? If you are a blogger, I would love to guest post about Christmas peace on your blog! Send me an email on my contact page if you are interested.
As promised, here is the Friday holiday dessert recipe:
Sarah’s Christmas Cookies
This is my grandmother’s recipe. These cookies were my art canvases as a teen, and now I enjoy decorating them with my children. They are similar to shortbread. I love the buttery cookie, the sweet buttercream icing, and the crunch from sprinkles. A favorite Christmas delight!
1 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
Cream butter in the bowl of an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add sugar gradually and beat another 5 minutes. Stir in vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
In a separate bowl, combine flour and salt. Using a 1/2 cup scoop, add flour mixture to bowl of electric mixer, incorporating all flour before next addition. Divide mixture in half and roll into balls. Flatten balls into large discs, place between two pieces of waxed or parchment paper, and place in large resealable plastic bag or plastic container. Refrigerate 2 hours or overnight.
Roll out chilled dough on lightly floured surface to about 1/4” thick. Cut with Christmas cookie cutters and place on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until set and just barely golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on rack.
Decorating options:
For an icing-free version: Before placing cookies in oven, gently press in colored sprinkles and bake.
To decorate with icing, make buttercream according to package directions on box or bag of powdered sugar. Color icing with food coloring, then use icing bags and metal decorating tips to pipe icing onto cookies. While icing is still wet, decorate with colored sprinkles or small candies. Let iced cookies dry completely before transporting in single layers.
Congratulations to…

Peaceful Cleanup: Day 24 OBS
Busy December has officially arrived, and we’re one day away from wrapping up this online Bible study. It’s kind of funny to think about cleaning up when I’m still decorating, but if I plan ahead for a good cleanup attitude, I will gain peace in busy December. I have purchased Sarah Mae’s book, Having a Martha Home the Mary Way, to learn better methods for containing clutter. I can’t commit to cleaning up using her full method yet—that can wait for January. Yet, I plan to take a few tips from the book, such as cleaning my kitchen clean daily and rewarding myself with a Christmas cookie (yay!) after hard work.
When I’m cleaning, I pass by my beautiful prints from Ruth Chou Simons in my home. They remind me to pause for peace in my quest to restore order to my home.
I am blessed to introduce you to Ruth today in an interview. She has graciously provided us a limited-time discount code for her products—see below. Please visit her site to view her gorgeous artwork.
Ruth Chou Simons is an artist, writer, entrepreneur, and speaker. She is the creator of the GraceLaced online art shoppe, blog, and the popular Instagram community where she shares scriptural truths daily through honest words and her hand-painted artwork. Ruth and her husband, Troy, live in New Mexico and are grateful parents to six sons—their greatest adventure.
Ruth’s passion is to see God’s Word proclaimed and the Gospel adorned through the reflecting of His handiwork in creation. She longs to encourage women to preach the truth of God’s Word to themselves, and is honored to use her words and artwork to do so. You can find her work at GraceLaced.com/store, and daily snippets at instagram.com/gracelaced.
Get 15% off your order with the code GRACELACED15, only through Dec. 8 at gracelaced.com.
Q: In your work as an artist, how do you strive to bring peace to others?
My priority in painting has always been to reflect the beauty of the Creator. I believe that belief in Christ is the means by which we experience perfect peace- through the beauty of His death and resurrection on my behalf. Ultimately, it is my hope that my artwork is a reflection of God’s work through creation and it spurs others on to love Him more.
Q: This Christmas, how are you planning to create peaceful memories with your family?
I am choosing to rest this Christmas season. Because the shoppe is busy during the holiday season, and because my deadlines to turn in my manuscript and art for my first book are early December, I plan to spend the Christmas break resting with my family. We are spending the holiday up in our cabin in Colorado, where we will be removed from the normal grind of school and work, where we can enjoy simple pleasures like a wood burning stove, early mornings on the porch, and time preparing meals together. I can’t imagine a more peaceful, relaxing Christmas with my husband and six boys!
Q: In what ways has God been faithful to you in 2016, and in what areas do you see God granting you peace in 2017?
God is faithful, in more ways that we often realize. This past year, our family experienced some loss and heartbreaks, some changes we didn’t anticipate. And as our business has grown this past year, God has been so faithful to remind me that He is merciful and kind, both in good and hard times. This year has brought unity and comfort to our family, even in the midst of unknowns. We look forward to 2017 being a peaceful year, not because life is settled and predictable, but because we know who holds all things together for our good.
I can’t wait to read Ruth’s first book. Her faith, creativity, and honesty inspire me, and I hope you will enjoy her products as much as I do! Please let me know what items you choose from her shoppe in the comments.
Questions for you:
If Christmas cleanup gets you down, what different angle can you take this year to bring your heart more peace? I have lots of tips in my book if you need help!
When you visited Ruth’s online shoppe, which product did you like best and why? And if you ordered it, please comment here!

Peaceful Celebration: Day 23 OBS
Welcome to Day 23 of the Christmas Peace for Busy Moms online Bible study. Today I have a video and a special guest interview. Visit the YouTube link below the quote card to access the video.
Here is my review for Devotions for Christmas, the book I mentioned in the video.
My special guest today is Pam Depoyan, artist and blogger. Read her writing, then browse through her online art gallery where she loves to paint stories of our lives in classic pen and ink, pastel and pencil. I love Pam’s detailed drawings!
Q: How do you keep peace day by day in your heart?
I think the chief way to maintain His peace is to keep conversational prayer ongoing throughout the day. How this might look:
Consciously turning my waking thoughts to God as I open my eyes and think about my day. Greeting Him, declaring a promise of His or two in statement form – the way David does in the psalms. Such as, “Thank you Father that you surround me today with songs of joy and victory. You bless the work of my hands. You make me run and not get weary.” Asking Him to make me aware of any “divine appointments” He wants to send my way that day.
Singing my prayers or even just praise on occasions when I’m alone – doing dishes, driving, etc.
Asking Him to make me aware of beauty and light and grace around me – to see paintings and stories all around in our daily lives in simple moments of wonder.
Asking Him to show me who and what to pray for that day.
Stopping myself immediately when I fall into negative thinking, get frustrated with other drivers, act selfishly and turn to Him to ask for His help, His forgiveness, His strength.
Paying attention to others around me in stores, in cars, on errands and lifting them up to Him. Praying for whomever is in need when I see ambulances racing.
Setting specific time to sit and listen to Him in His Word, to write down what I think He is saying. Then I always ask Him to confirm those thoughts with His Word, turning to Scripture.
Forgiving anyone who has hurt me, asking for forgiveness of any way I may have hurt another… telling God I don’t want anything to stand between me and Him.
Q : How do you plan to bring peace to your home and family this Christmas?
I used to try and do everything to the nth degree for Christmas. It wasn’t always peaceful. Now, I want to be more thoughtful about the decorations and ornaments I do choose to put out. Not everything has to be used every year. I want to take time to sit quietly and listen to Christmas music and enjoy the tree lights, even if it is only for 30 minutes a day. To re-savor favorite Christmas movie classics and introduce young friends to some of them they may not have seen. To ask God to bring people my way who may need an encouraging touch from Him and to show me how to use my gifts that way.
Q : Where do you experience the most peace at Christmastime?
I always experience peace at church in the worship time especially, but at Christmas everything is even more alive with His Peace. In candlelight, in poinsettias, in handshakes one to another, in carols so ingrained upon our hearts. So many of those carols are scripture-based, and I always feel them wash over me with His anointing and presence. I especially love the candlelight service, watching the darkness turn to blazing warm light.

What part of the video inspired peaceful thoughts?
Which part of Pam’s interview sparked a new idea for your peaceful practices?

Peaceful Preparation: Day 22 OBS
Does November do a number on your health habits? For me, November presents several challenges. First, my sleep is disrupted by the time change. The older I get, the longer it takes me to adjust—about two weeks this year! Unfortunately, I feel so fatigued that exercise seems impossible. I give walking a half-hearted attempt but can’t perform up to speed, so I give up.
This year I got sick in mid-November and took a few days off work. No exercise was possible for those achy days. Then, my healthy eating habits took a nosedive at Thanksgiving. Busy December hasn’t yet begun, and I’m struggling to keep my health intact.
This week I’m making a fresh start. I’m getting back on track with fruit smoothies or eggs for breakfast rather than carbs. I’m taking homemade soup or salads for lunch rather than heavier supper leftovers. And I will squeeze in a half-hour of exercise before the sun sets, gaining a much-needed serotonin boost from sunshine and activity.
I’m returning to my healthy practice of weight training with planks, squats, and jumping jacks on my mini-trampoline. I know from experience that walking alone won’t help my pants fit better. Strength-training is essential, and I must carve out time for it before the endless carb parade begins in December.
My cookie dough is mixed up, ready to slice and bake. Come back on Friday (Day 25) to see my favorite Christmas cookie recipe! But I’ve promised myself to only eat one cookie per day before evening arrives, so I have time to burn it off through exercise.
Every time I cook supper, my goal is to use the cook once, eat twice method. I encourage you to download the sheet I prepared, which inspires me on what to do with my prepared food. This past weekend we smoked two turkey breasts and I made nine quarts of stock out of the bones. Many healthy meals will spring from that one afternoon of cooking.
I’ve been thinking about this verse regarding physical health:
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:8 NIV
I’m thankful God’s word tells us physical training does hold value. Healthy exercise, sleep, and eating habits prepare us for tip-top service in God’s kingdom. But I want to keep my primary focus on growing more like Jesus every day, and I can do that better by preparing well for healthy habits. My preparation for my health in busy December will help me serve others more faithfully as a peace ambassador.
Questions for you:
Which healthy habit you currently keep brings you peace?
Which healthy habit can you adopt to prepare for greater peace in busy December?
Please share your thoughts in the comments section below or on my Facebook author page for your chance to win!
Comment on my blog through Dec. 1 and you will be entered to win the grand prize Mom’s Pampering Set, pictured below, to be announced Dec. 2!

Peaceful Planning: Day 21 OBS
Welcome to Day 21 of the Christmas Peace for Busy Moms online Bible study! Today I have a special interview with Sandy Kreps, author and blogger at Modern Simplicity. Sandy’s book Simple Christmas contains 101 ideas for simplifying Christmas, which results in greater peace during busy December. In fact, she wrote an entire chapter called “Holiday Planning” which lists 24 excellent tips for creating order in busy December. I highly recommend her book, and I’m happy to introduce you to Sandy today!
Q & A with Sandy Kreps
By taking a moderate approach designed to cut over-consumption, live within your means, and make healthy lifestyle choices, Sandy Kreps helps people cut through the chaos of modern life and find a simpler path. She writes regularly on her blog, Modern Simplicity. She is the author of “Mommy Simplicity: Finding Calm in the Chaos,” “Simply Christmas” and “Fresh Start: 31 Days to Simplify, Declutter and Rein in the Chaos,” available on Amazon. You can also find Sandy on Twitter and Facebook.
Q: How have you found peace in your faith journey? Share part of your story with us.
SK: Over the years, I’ve struggled with perfectionism and wanting to be in control, and whenever I focus on those things, it seems like life falls apart. The harder I try to control my world, the less control I have. It’s stressful! But when I can step back and let God be in control, with faith that I’m following his commands, life is more enjoyable and less stressful. I have to consciously make time in my day to center myself and focus on living the way God intended so that I don’t fall into the trap of thinking I need to “do more” or “be more” like so many messages in society tell us we need to be. My goal is to keep my family and my faith as my main focus, and help other moms clear out the chaos from their lives so they can do the same.
Q: Which daily rhythms bring you the most peace, and why?
SK: I like to start my day with reading a devotion and a chapter or two of Scripture. On the days I do that, it’s easier for me to flow through my day keeping God at the front of my mind, which makes daily stresses pale in comparison to the plan God has in store for my life and my family. It’s hard to be too stressed when your eyes are on the Lord. I try to continually look for ways to simplify my life so that I have more time and mental energy for what matters most.
Q: What tips from your book Simply Christmas will help moms order their days for more peace?
SK: I think the most important tip of Simply Christmas is the idea that less is more. If you remember to keep your faith and your family as the focus of the season, it becomes so much more meaningful and enjoyable. We don’t need a perfect Hallmark Christmas to have a peaceful, memorable holiday. I want families to remember that the season is about love and hospitality and fellowship, and that’s not something you can find in the mall or wrapped under the tree.
Q: Do you have any Christmas-related posts? Please share the links with us!
SK: I’m going to be running a series of Christmas posts in December on my website, www.modernsimplicity.org. In the meantime, here is a post I wrote about Prioritizing Holiday Traditions as well as a 6-week series round-up I did on Simplifying the Holidays.
Please visit Sandy’s site to find more ideas for organization and planning.
Questions for you:
What can you do today to plan for a more peaceful Christmas?
Which of Sandy’s suggestions will help you keep your mind steadfast and result in greater peace?
Please share your thoughts in the comments section below or on my Facebook author page for your chance to win!
