Free Fiction: The Loveliest Humps North of Abu Dhabi

Hello my loves,
I hope you enjoy this fun short story, inspired by an article I read recently in The New York Times.
The Loveliest Humps North of Abu DhabiThe desert sun blazed over the sprawling grounds of the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, the air filled with the earthy scent of sand and the soft grunts of camels awaiting their moment of glory. In the corner of the staging area, Farah Al-Haddad paced nervously beside her prized camel, Noura.
Noura was no ordinary camel. Her eyelashes could sweep the desert dunes, her hump was as smooth and perfectly rounded as a golden dune at sunrise, and her lips—well, Farah had always thought they were lovely enough.
But “enough” didn’t cut it in the world of competitive camel beauty. Not when rival breeders were rumored to be smuggling in vials of Botox disguised as camel milk.
“I told you, Noura,” Farah whispered, adjusting her camel’s silk shawl adorned with glittering crystals. “We’re going to do this the right way. Natural beauty is beauty.”
Noura huffed, swatting a fly with her tasseled tail. She didn’t care for gossip or Botox scandals. She only cared about the platter of dates promised after the contest.
The tension in the air was palpable as the judges, dressed in pristine white thobes, strode into the arena. The whispers among the breeders grew louder.
“Did you hear about the disqualifications?” one breeder hissed. “Twelve camels kicked out already for fake humps and Botox lips!”
Farah raised an eyebrow. “Fake humps? Who even thinks of that?”
Before anyone could answer, a commotion erupted near the inspection tent. A tall, sleek camel named Aziza was being led away in disgrace, her pouting lips and suspiciously taut forehead betraying her.
The crowd gasped. Aziza’s breeder, a man with a finely oiled mustache, protested loudly. “She’s just naturally gifted! Those lips? Born that way!”
A judge held up a small syringe confiscated from the breeder’s bag. The crowd erupted in laughter, and Aziza stomped indignantly as she was escorted out.
Noura nudged Farah with her nose, as if to say, See? Honesty pays.
When it was their turn, Farah led Noura proudly into the arena. The judges circled her, murmuring appreciatively.
“Look at that natural curve in her hump,” one said.
“And those lashes—absolutely no extensions,” another chimed in.
Finally, the head judge approached. He peered into Noura’s large, soulful eyes, inspected her glossy coat, and gave a satisfied nod.
“This,” he declared, “is natural beauty at its finest.”
Farah beamed as cheers erupted from the crowd. Noura let out a victorious grunt, her tail swishing proudly.
Later, as the festival wrapped up, Farah treated Noura to her promised platter of dates. “You see, Noura?” she said, stroking her camel’s neck. “Integrity wins in the end.”
Noura chewed contentedly, her eyes glinting with wisdom. She didn’t need Botox. She didn’t need fake humps. She was a queen of the desert, and everyone knew it.
And as the sun set over the golden sands, Farah and Noura walked off into the horizon, ready to conquer next year’s competition—with nothing but honesty, grace, and a dazzling set of natural lashes.

Discovering My Roots: The Creative Legacy of My Ancestry
When I first received my DNA results, I thought it would be just an interesting way to learn a bit more about where I came from. But as the percentages rolled in—67.7% Irish, Scottish, and Welsh; 19.9% Scandinavian; 7.7% English; and 4.7% Finnish—I realized I wasn’t just unlocking ancestral statistics. I was uncovering threads of creativity, resilience, and passion that have been woven into my soul for centuries.
For years, my artistic expression has been deeply personal, rooted in emotion and experience. But now I see that my creativity is also a tribute to those who came before me, whose DNA dances in every brushstroke, every color choice, every word, every story and every idea I bring to life.
67.7% Irish, Scottish, Welsh: A Legacy of Storytelling and SpiritThe largest piece of my genetic puzzle traces back to the Celtic lands of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales—a realm brimming with mysticism, poetry, and art. It’s no wonder I’ve always felt a deep connection to storytelling and the power of narrative in my art. These lands have gifted the world with legends of ancient heroes, ethereal landscapes, and hauntingly beautiful music.
I often think about how the rugged beauty of these places mirrors my creative journey. The rolling green hills of Ireland, the craggy Highlands of Scotland, and the windswept coasts of Wales seem to echo the emotional landscapes I seek to capture in my work. There’s a rawness, a defiance, and a haunting beauty in these lands—qualities I strive to channel into my art.
The Celtic spirit is also one of resilience, finding light even in the darkest of times. That sense of perseverance resonates deeply with me, both as an artist and as a person who has faced life’s storms.
19.9% Scandinavian: The Influence of Nordic Minimalism and MythologyAlmost 20% of my DNA belongs to the Scandinavian peoples—a lineage that has gifted me a love of stark beauty and the wisdom of simplicity. From the ethereal glow of the Northern Lights to the timeless minimalism of Nordic design, Scandinavia’s influence is undeniable in the modern art world.
For me, the Scandinavian connection is also about storytelling. The Norse myths—filled with gods, giants, and epic battles—remind me of the power of imagination. They show that stories aren’t just entertainment; they’re a way to explain the world, make sense of chaos, and find meaning in the mundane.
In my art, I often incorporate this duality: the clean lines of minimalism juxtaposed with the chaotic energy of abstract expressionism. Perhaps it’s my Scandinavian DNA whispering to me, urging me to find balance between structure and emotion.
7.7% English: The Tradition of CraftsmanshipThough it’s a smaller part of my ancestry, the English influence brings a legacy of craftsmanship and precision. England’s rich tradition of decorative arts, from intricate tapestries to detailed ceramics, inspires my attention to detail and my love of texture in my paintings.
More than that, I feel a kinship with the English Romantics, who believed in the transformative power of nature and art. Like them, I see creativity as a way to reconnect with the world’s beauty and find solace in its rhythms.
4.7% Finnish: The Quiet Power of NatureThe Finnish part of my DNA—small but mighty—brings a connection to nature that feels almost spiritual. Finland’s vast forests, icy lakes, and midnight sun evoke a sense of wonder and introspection.
Finnish design philosophy often emphasizes harmony with nature, and that ethos aligns perfectly with my creative vision. Whether I’m writing an outdoor scene painting an abstract bloom or channeling the energy of a stormy sea, I feel guided by the Finnish idea that art and nature are inseparable.
How My Ancestry Shapes My Creativity
Uncovering my DNA has deepened my understanding of why I create the way I do. My Irish, Scottish, and Welsh heritage gives me the heart of a storyteller; my Scandinavian roots inspire minimalism and mythology; my English lineage hones my attention to craft; and my Finnish ancestry reminds me to seek solace in nature.
Together, they form a mosaic of influence that connects me to the artists, dreamers, and survivors who came before me. Their struggles, triumphs, and imaginations live on in every piece of art I create.
Embracing the Legacy
Knowing where I come from doesn’t just ground me—it empowers me. It reminds me that creativity is in my blood, passed down through generations who dared to dream, who sought beauty and meaning in their worlds.
So when I pick up a pen, a brush or sketch a new idea, I feel a sense of gratitude for my ancestors. Their DNA is more than just a scientific code—it’s a living, breathing force that shapes who I am as an author and artist. And through my work, I hope to honor their legacy while carving out my own place in the story of our shared humanity.
If you’ve ever wondered how your ancestry might influence your creativity, I encourage you to explore it. You might just discover, as I have, that your art is more than self-expression—it’s a celebration of the generations that came before you, a bridge between the past and the future.

The Light That Never Fades: Free Short Story

Hello my love,
Today is Christmas Day in New Zealand and I have been busy collecting stories. So much in the news inspires me, especially the ways people push back against hatred, fear and darkness. This little story was inspired by a new article I read, “protest in Syrian capital after burning of Christmas tree.“
It’s a hateful thing to burn any tree, but more so a beautiful tree of light. You don’t have to be any particular faith to know something is not right.
I hope you enjoy my wee short story. The image is a photo I took of the icing on the Christmas Cake my lovely neighbour baked for us. And she grew a special orchid too. I can’t wait to see it flower. Orchids play staring roles in many of my books, including Claimed By The Sheikh and Stolen By The Sheikh. I am an orchid lover, and while I don’t celebrate Christmas the way others do, I do enjoy the pageantry. I would never burn down a Christmas tree!
“What you goin’ do when the love runs out?”~ lyrics: Simple Minds, Alive and Kicking
The Light That Never FadesThe night the Christmas tree burned in the central square of Aleppo was supposed to be a night of joy. Families had gathered, their breath misting in the crisp air, children’s laughter mingling with the sound of carols sung by the local choir. The towering tree, decorated with handmade ornaments, was a beacon of hope for a city battered by years of conflict.
Then came the fire.
Extremists swept through the square like a shadow, their torches turning the symbol of unity into a blazing pyre. Screams of shock echoed as people fled for safety, the flames consuming not just the tree but the hope it symbolized. When the fire died down, all that remained was ash and silence.
But the silence didn’t last.
In the days that followed, whispers began to spread. They started small, in markets and at church gates, in crowded homes where families huddled together. The tree may have burned, but the spirit of Christmas could not be extinguished. Aleppo had seen worse, survived worse. A fire couldn’t destroy what was already burning bright in their hearts.
The first act of defiance came from an unexpected place.
Fatima, a widowed seamstress who had lost everything in the war, carried a bundle of old fabric scraps to the center of the square. Under the watchful eyes of her neighbors, she began weaving. Stitch by stitch, she turned those scraps into a banner that read, “Hope Never Dies.” Inspired by her courage, others followed.
A carpenter named Youssef brought planks of wood salvaged from bombed-out buildings. A baker named Amal contributed tins of paint. Children scoured the rubble for bits of glass and metal to turn into ornaments. Within days, the people of Aleppo were working side by side, Muslims and Christians alike, rebuilding what had been destroyed.
The second tree was smaller, scrappier, but it was stronger because it was built by everyone. On Christmas Eve, the square was full again—not just with Christians, but with Muslims, Druze, and people of no faith, united in their determination to reclaim joy. The air was thick with the scent of spices from shared meals, and the sound of a hundred voices singing together.
As the sun set, Fatima and Youssef climbed a rickety ladder to place a star made from twisted metal at the top of the new tree. The crowd erupted in cheers as the lights flickered on, illuminating the square with a warm glow that pushed back the darkness.
When the extremists returned, they found not fear, but defiance. Men and women locked arms, surrounding the tree, daring anyone to touch it. And for the first time in years, the people of Aleppo stood as one.
The tree stood through the night, its lights shining brighter than the stars above. And as dawn broke, it was clear that something had shifted. The extremists had tried to extinguish hope, but they had only fueled it.
That Christmas, Aleppo didn’t just survive. It triumphed.
Because the light that burns in human hearts—the light of resilience, love, and unity—can never be extinguished. And every year after, the Christmas tree in Aleppo became not just a symbol of faith, but a symbol of a people who refused to be broken.
I hope you enjoyed this wee short story. Praying for peace xxx

There were times I laughed, times I cried, and other times I was cheerleader number one for Ruby to get her mojo on and take back her life! I absolutely loved all the in-her-head comments that Ruby would have whenever Chanel would throw out one of her wacky life-coach do’s and don’ts! Priceless!! A very good book.”

Mollie is just such a good writer
“I really enjoy Mollie’s style of writing – it’s in the 21st century and relates to every woman who has been trashed by a bloke. The abandonment issues experienced by Max are also so relevant to our current world, so many have been emotionally stunted or abandoned. This is a story that resonates with me and I could not put it down. Mollie is just such a good writer with enormous appeal in her story – an excellent read on a rainy day.”

How the Creator of The Sopranos Transformed Personal Struggles into Creative Gold
It’s a truth universally acknowledged by storytellers: some of the best, most gripping stories come from real-life experiences—especially the messy, unresolved ones. For The Sopranos creator David Chase, that truth played out spectacularly in the form of Livia Soprano, a character inspired by his complicated relationship with his own mother.
Livia, the manipulative, guilt-wielding matriarch of the Soprano family, was one of the most memorable aspects of the groundbreaking show. Her dynamic with her son, Tony, felt uncomfortably real—perhaps because it was rooted in Chase’s personal life. He has openly spoken about how his difficult relationship with his mother, marked by a mix of love, resentment, and obligation, became the foundation for one of television’s most complex parent-child relationships.
But what’s fascinating is not just that Chase used his mother as inspiration—it’s how he turned that personal pain into something universal, relatable, and deeply resonant.
The Power of Authenticity
Livia Soprano wasn’t a one-dimensional caricature. She wasn’t just a “bad mom” or a villain; she was human. Flawed, cruel, but also vulnerable. This complexity gave the show a powerful emotional core.
Chase has often remarked that his mother, much like Livia, had a talent for weaponizing guilt. In interviews, he described her as someone who could “make you feel terrible just for being alive.” It’s a sentiment many of us can relate to—feeling trapped in an emotional tug-of-war with a parent or loved one. Chase didn’t sugarcoat that dynamic, and audiences connected with it because it was so real.
For writers, this is a lesson in the power of authenticity. Mining your own experiences—especially the painful, unresolved ones—can lead to some of your most compelling work. There’s a vulnerability in sharing those parts of yourself, but there’s also immense creative potential.
Turning Pain into Art
Chase’s use of his mother as inspiration wasn’t just about exorcising personal demons—it was about exploring the universal themes that arise from familial conflict. The Sopranos wasn’t just a show about mobsters; it was a show about family, identity, and the messy, complicated relationships that shape us.
By leaning into his experiences, Chase gave his audience permission to reflect on their own. How many viewers saw aspects of their own parents in Livia? How many related to Tony’s frustration, guilt, and love for his mother? This is the beauty of storytelling—when it’s personal, it becomes universal.
The Balancing Act of Catharsis
For writers, drawing from personal pain can be cathartic, but it also requires a delicate balance. There’s a fine line between using your experiences to create art and using them as a form of therapy. Chase didn’t turn Livia into a one-note villain to “get back” at his mother. Instead, he created a fully realized character who served the story. That’s the difference between self-indulgence and art.
Your Pain Is Your Power
David Chase’s story is a reminder that your personal struggles—the ones you think no one could possibly understand—might be the very thing that resonates most with others. Whether it’s a difficult relationship, a past trauma, or an unresolved wound, those experiences can become the foundation for powerful storytelling.
So, the next time you find yourself grappling with a difficult memory or a complicated relationship, consider this: What if this pain could be transformed into art? What if your story could help others feel seen, understood, or even inspired?
David Chase did it with The Sopranos, proving that even the most painful parts of life can be turned into something beautiful—and maybe even iconic.
How the Creator of The Sopranos Inspired My Creative JourneyChase’s memories about his mother’s talent for weaponizing guilt, resonated with me deeply. Like Chase, I’ve found that the more personal the story, the more it connects with others. As an author, I often draw from my own experiences to shape the characters and themes in my books, like Love in Montana.

In Love in Montana, Lizzie Buckley struggles to reconcile her desire for love with the trauma of her childhood. Her perfectionism and yearning to be accepted for who she truly is were inspired by my own reflections on relationships and identity.

LOVE IN SICILY – excerpt
Chapter 5
Kate’s breath caught in her chest. She knew what was coming before Jacqui uttered her plea.
“Can you be Santa’s helper?”
Kate leaned against a tree and twisted her foot in the soil. “Maybe Santa’s flying solo this year,” Kate said.
“Santa doesn’t do single. He always has a helper. Someone to help him give kisses and cuddles and gifts to the children. The kids look forward to it. It’s the highlight of the year. A lot of these children have nothing. They come from poor homes. They have no money, no food, no presents. Nothing. Santa’s helper shares the load, picking up and distributing food and toys with Santa.’
“I guess, he’ll have to find another helper,” Kate said.
“That’s the thing. It’s why I’m calling.”
I’ll do anything, just don’t ask me to do that, Kate prayed inwardly. Not with him.
“Kate, will you help me out? Will you be Santa’s helper?”
Kate groaned. “Who’s Santa?” she asked praying inwardly Jacqui would confirm it wasn’t Centrefold Santa.
“I’m not sure. Probably one of the old guys from the retirement home. Why?”
“No reason,” Kate lied. She should’ve told Jacqui about her run-in with Adonis but she knew Jacqui would be like Zac with a bone, chasing the impossible, feasting on the idea that her best friend would have a fairytale Christmas romance.
“One of the oldies from the retirement home? Are you absolutely sure?” Kate asked again.
“It’s been that way for the last three years. I can’t think who else would volunteer.”
Kate crushed the ground with her boots.
I can.
“Sure. For you Jacqui, anything.” She prayed the slopping in her gut warning her of danger was less about her morbid fear that Santa was the adonis she had face-planted and more about the pie she’d eaten for lunch.
“Thanks, Kate. You’re a lifesaver.”
“No. Jacqui. I’m not,” she mumbled under her breath.
“I’ll leave the outfit at my place. Can you swing by and pick it up?”
‘What do I need to do?” Kate said, groaning inwardly.
“They’re loading up Santa’s ute tonight and then you’ll be driving out to the Maori settlements.
“Santa drives?”
“It’s 2020 Kate. Of course, Santa drives. The kids all know he comes early in his ute. The bigger kids tell the little ones that Santa will fly across the sky on Christmas morning to check that they’re having an awesome day. For now, he wants to swing by and say hello and see if they have any special wishes and give a few early presents to the good kids.”
* * *
“I hate Christmas,” Kate said to Zac as she opened Jacqui’s door with her spare key. “But I’m going to try. For the kids.”
On the hall table neatly folded in a blaze of satin red was her outfit. Her tiny, weeny, super teeny costume, she realised with horror as she inspected it.
Zac cocked his head to one side and frowned. Taking the lead he padded to Jacqui’s bedroom and barked.
“Okay. Okay. I get it,” Kate said. “The sooner we start the sooner we can go home.” She scooped up the silky nightmare and joined Zac.
She kicked off her boots and thrust her feet through the satin opening and hitched the dress over her boobs. Then yanked on the small white fringed cape. At least her shoulders wouldn’t be exposed, and if she pulled it tightly she could cover her chest.
Just.
Kate tightened the belt, clinching it tight around her narrow waist. Then pulled on the candy-striped stockings, pulling them high to the top of her thigh and repositioned the little satin bows. Then thrust her feet into the ridiculously high black boots, fringed with white fur.
“This is going to be gruelling,” she muttered as she pulled the little Santa hat over her hair. “This outfit could only just pass for a general audience,” she said looking in the bedroom mirror. “If the skirt rode any higher, or the bustier fell any lower I’d look like an x-rated adult movie star. How is this even suitable for kids?”
Zac barked his agreement.
“Don’t look so smug,” Kate said, “Look there’s a little elf suit for you.”
Zac rolled on his back.
“Playing dead isn’t going to cut it,” Kate said.
Brushing back the flood of gently waving, silky amber hair, she pulled a face at her reflection.
“Christmas can’t be over soon enough.”
Chapter 6
“Christmas is hot this year,” a sultry, uncomfortably familiar voice purred as Kate stepped out of the ute.
She looked up, mortified, as his gaze trawled the length of Kate’s thigh as the skirt snagged on the buckle of her seatbelt. Proud lion-like eyes combed over her body in primal appreciation, then lifted to her face.
Her worst nightmare had come true.
Pulling her dress free, Kate perched precariously on the ridiculous heels, thrusting her shoulders back in an attempt to convey absolute control.
“Northland is always hot at Christmas,” she said, cooly.
Leonardo Bressolini grinned. “Gianni, this is Kate. Kate meet Gianni. She’ll be riding you—riding with you,” he corrected.
Gianni chuckled. Not a quiet chuckle, but a big, deep gritty chuckle that swarmed all over her.
Gianni. Of course, he’d have a glamorous playboy’s name to match this infantile behaviour. And of course Leonardo, the showy millionaire water magnate who had now made The Bay of Islands his home would be the one to throw them together.
“It will be my pleasure to ride you,” Gianni said, lathering on the sultry accent.
Kate brought all her willpower to bear, ruthlessly quashing the images her treacherous brain supplied far too eagerly.
“I am not a toy to amuse you,” she snapped, twisting away from him.
“What’s got into you? You’re acting like an old married couple,” Leonardo said, as he piled a giant doll and other toys into the waiting ute.
Gianni gestured an apology with his hands. No, not an apology, it was a denial, Kate decided, as Gianni held his hands in the air and stepped back in a gesture of peace. Despite the space, sparks burned between them.
“Oh, before I forget,” Leonardo said, passing her a lipstick. “Your friend Jacqui called in on her way to the airport. She left this for you.”
“What am I supposed to do with this?” Kate asked, looking at the slender capsule in horror.
“Well, you’re not going to eat it for starters,” Leonardo said. “Gianni, you know the delicate sensitivities of women’s lips. Can you give your helper a hand?”
Kate clamped her mouth shut and crossed her arms over her chest. “I don’t wear makeup,” she protested. “But I can assure you I’m quite capable. I am a capable, competent person.”
“It has to be done perfectly. One false move, one misstep, one slip and your mouth will look like a blood bath. Do you want to terrify the kids?” Gianni said.
“Of course I don’t.”
“Then don’t be so stubborn.”
Gianni lifted a long sensuous finger and pressed it to her mouth. Raising her top lip, her mouth parted like a flower stimulated by the promise of a bee’s proboscis.
Taking the tube in his fingers Gianni glided the sultry red wax on her lips, applying it in long, fluid movements as he explored Kate’s traitorous mouth.
Unbearably aroused, melting with a confusing mix of desire and mortification, she forced her lips into a tight line. But Gianni would not be deterred. With erotic skill he slid the lipstick with the intimate prowess of a lover claiming a virgin for the first time, opening her with his touch, exploring her vulnerable flesh with scorching purpose.
Kate moaned slightly, every movement of his body escalating the wickedly agonising pleasure that swam through her until all she wanted was for him to finish what he’d started.
“I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus. Underneath the mistletoe last night” Leonardo sang. Laughing, he lifted a plastic piece of mistletoe and flung it at them.
Gianni lowered his face toward her. Leaning in, he lifted his finger and drew it along the edge of her lip, as though wiping an errant line of colour.
He drew his finger to his mouth and placed it on his lips as though he was tasting her scent. Then in a moment of supreme control, he leaned in and took Kate’s mouth, kissing her deeply, powerfully, intimately, as the first ripple of need quaked through her body.
“Get a room.” Leonardo laughed.
But they were powerless to stop. Their tongues united in a blaze of desire. Gianni’s sultry eyes pinned her like a hypnotic spell, as her lips contracted around his and dragged her over the edge of control.
Deeper and deeper she fell, losing all rational self-control. She’d never felt anything like it, the whole experience a shattering revelation about her capacity for sensuality. It was as dangerous as it was exciting.
She was barely cognisant of the growing crowd of locals drawing closer to them. It was only when someone’s cellphone chimed the lyrics to a Cindy Lauper song that reality dawned.
And girls, they wanna have fun
Oh, girls just wanna have fun…
The phone rings, in the middle of the night
My father yells “What you gonna do with your life?”
Oh, daddy dear, you know you’re still number one
But girls they wanna have fun
Oh, girls just wanna have. . .
Fun.
Suddenly, without warning, anger exploded in her chest, and the far too good looking hunk, who thought himself superior, was her target.
“What the hell are you doing?” she hissed at him, pushing him away. She glared at his chiselled cheekbones and golden-toned skin. You think you can take what you want.
He stared at her with blank, slack-jawed, amusement. “Kissing Santa’s helper, babe.”
“I live here. Everyone will talk. And don’t call me babe. I am not your babe.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry. How inconsiderate of me. I should have ignored the mistletoe. Allowed you to refuse me and accepted the bad luck that would have rained upon us because of the mistletoe curse. All because you’ve cancelled fun this Christmas.”
“Fun! That wasn’t fun. That was humiliating,” she threw at him.
A bemused smile grazed Gianni’s formidable lips as he sat behind the wheel. His gaze met hers in a moment of recognition.
Did he understand her pain? Did he sense her hurt? A gnawing sense of premonition collided with a torrent of anger and fear surging through her body in a maelstrom of opposing currents.
She felt guilty and excited; afraid and exhilarated; happy and sad. Every conflicting emotion collided through her body, reducing her to a quivering mess.
She wanted to be alone—she dreamed of sharing her life.
She wanted to be independent—she dreamed of someone to rely on.
She wanted—
She closed her eyes and clenched them shut. God, she didn’t know what she wanted anymore. All she knew was she never wanted to hurt like she had when everyone she loved had died.
She was a mess, Kate affirmed, as she registered the crowd gathered around the ute. And the whole tiny town knew it.
She grabbed Zac from her ute and placed him on the back seat. She climbed into the Land Rover laden with presents.Had she cancelled Christmas? Would it be so wrong to have a little bit of fun?

PRAISE FOR LOVE IN SICILYcaptivating romance!“I absolutely loved this romance book set in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. Gianni has fled to New Zealand to flee from his family and Kate is in New Zealand running her global Manuka honey empire. Kate and Gianni are realistic, strong, independent, sexy, and confident. Kate is irate when Gianni demands she sell her business to him. Kate and Gianni are struggling with personal issues and just want to escape their lives. They end up having sparks that are hotter than an inferno. Their journey with each other is sensuous and in one of the most tranquil places in the world, their happily ever after came when they were at their most vulnerable. I recommend reading this phenomenal romance that will set you on fire, this author is extraordinary and knows how to captivate her reader’s hearts and attention with passion and hot, steamy romance.”
a great read“A great read. It has its share of angst and joy. Kate and Gianni have a lot of familial events that play into this story. Well-layered and the interaction, even when it comes to their need for a therapist, is really cool. Disaster and betrayal are balanced out with the realization that they have both dealt with volcanic activity, which leads to love. A quick and balanced read.”
another heart-wrenching yet heart healing story from this gifted author…“Loved the push & pull between the main protagonists. They both had horrific experiences & whilst she had physical scars & grieved the loss of her family with a heavy dose of self-blame, his were buried much deeper & yet he revealed everything. Loved her almost human mutt & the detailed well-written story that had a lot of angst but underpinning all the drama, the harsh words. they were so sexually connected that they could have put the stars to shame. Highly recommended.”

The inspiration behind the storyAlong with loving writing books and painting, I love to experience new cultures and I am interested in travel photography that tells a story – portraying people’s passions and/or that captures the essence and spirit of a place. Many moons ago I studied for a qualification in photography. In this week’s blog I share the six images I chose for my final photography assignment – I was only allowed six! I have deliberately chosen images that avoid clichéd images of Sicily and tell a story about the people – their passions and their culture.
As you’ll discover later in this blog, We traveled to Sicily to celebrate my partner’s 50th in May 2011. While there, we traveled to the island of Salina, one of the volcanic Aeolian Islands that form an archipelago off the northern coast of Sicily. From our idyllic holiday spot, we could see the island of Stromboli letting off steam. I once met a very interesting man from Stromboli and thought it would be fun to create a character from there. When the volcanic explosion happened in New Zealand, I wondered what would happen if a woman who survived a volcanic explosion and was terrified of volcanos fell in love with a man who loved volcanoes! And my love story, LOVE IN SICILY was born.

This image sums up so much of Sicily – the worn, old-world façade of this narrow street, the religious image on the door and the broken car which lends an insight into how people live and drive. The car tells its own story – the love heart (symbolic of their passion) and the bullet hole in the windscreen. I do hope the driver wasn’t the victim of a Mafia hit! I increased the vibrancy slightly to emphasise the red heart and to bring out the rich patina of the worn building facades.

I converted my colour image to black and white and added a sepia tone to increase the sense of timelessness and nostalgia of Corleone – made infamous by the movie The Godfather – as well as to add more drama. We spent a very, very, very memorable afternoon here after drinking Ouzo with a most charming elderly man.

The food of Sicily is divine in its simplicity. The Italians love their deserts and this desert image reflects the Sicilians ability to create food from the gods which has a spirit of minimalism and authenticity – less really is more. This desert is even more special because it is a bespoke desert whipped up for me especially. The chef was so very, very proud and I was delighted! The desert was soft in texture and I wanted to capture this by leaving the desert off focus – the edge of the plate has the harder focus – adding more contrast with the desert. I increased the vibrancy slightly to bring the richness of the custard and berry.

I wanted to capture the chaos, colour and beauty of this street side florist and the passion with which the people of Sicily live and work. The blurred rose and hand of the woman with its sense of movement evokes this chaos, passion and vitality. I cropped some clutter above their heads but left the chair, bolts of cloth and ribbons to echo the chaos around them.

This very talented chef was creating a work of art from a simple watermelon. I love the look of absolute concentration on his face and the tender way he holds the watermelon. I added some vibrancy and increased the brightness a little to compensate for the harsh light that slightly washed out his features.

The Vespa complete with mobile phone and family is quintessentially Italian – add the narrow streets and kids with a soccer ball and you really capture the Italian spirit. I increased the vibrancy levels and brightness to give more life and vitality to the image – as the street was in shadow when the image was originally taken.

The joy of stumbling across exiled Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda’s house, (also the setting for the Italian movie il postino and sitting blissfully in the rain.
I do miss my photography — must dust off my camera. I’d love to do a coffee table photobook sometime soon.

I hope you enjoyed seeing these memories. We traveled to Sicily to celebrate my partner’s 50th in May 2011. While there, we traveled to the island of Salina, one of the volcanic Aeolian Islands that form an archipelago off the northern coast of Sicily. Why Writing and Reading Love Stories is the Ultimate Opiate

Love stories have been around as long as we’ve had the ability to tell stories. From ancient poetry to modern romance novels, we’re drawn to tales of connection, heartbreak, and happily-ever-afters. But why? What makes love stories so addictive, and why do we reach for them in times of stress or longing? Writing and reading love stories have become, for many of us, a form of opiate—a balm for life’s challenges, a burst of hope, and a reminder of our own capacity for love.
1. Love Stories are an Escape from RealityLove stories transport us from our everyday lives into a world where emotions are heightened, and every glance and touch holds a deeper meaning. In a love story, mundane routines disappear, replaced by stolen moments, surprise encounters, and grand gestures. This escape is incredibly powerful, particularly in a world that often feels chaotic or overwhelming. We know these stories aren’t our own, yet they allow us to step away from our reality and experience emotions through someone else’s eyes.
When life feels heavy, a love story can be the perfect escape—a place where we know things will eventually turn out alright, no matter how stormy the path.
2. They Remind Us of Our Own HumanityLove stories shine a light on the parts of ourselves we sometimes forget in the hustle of daily life. When we read or write about characters falling in love, we’re reminded of our own capacity for passion, tenderness, and vulnerability. Whether we’re rooting for the high school sweethearts or two souls reconnecting later in life, we recognize parts of ourselves in the journey.
For writers, crafting these stories offers an outlet to explore their own emotions and experiences. It’s a therapeutic process, allowing authors to process their feelings, longings, and fears through the characters they create. For readers, there’s an undeniable thrill in seeing familiar struggles and joys mirrored in fictional characters. Through these stories, we’re able to process our own experiences and find validation in our emotions.
3. Hope and Healing in Every PageLove stories are more than just entertainment; they offer hope. Whether the tale ends in a fairy-tale wedding or a bittersweet farewell, love stories celebrate the human spirit’s resilience. They teach us that, despite heartache and loss, love has the power to transform, heal, and inspire.
For many, love stories are a reminder that hope exists, even when things feel hopeless. The characters face challenges, misunderstandings, or outright heartbreak, yet they keep going. Through their struggles and triumphs, we’re inspired to keep believing in the possibility of love and connection in our own lives.
4. They Build Empathy and ConnectionOne of the hidden gifts of reading love stories is the empathy they foster. By experiencing love through the eyes of different characters, we’re able to understand perspectives and feelings that might be different from our own. We feel the butterflies of a new romance, the ache of separation, and the relief of reconciliation. Through these shared experiences, we connect more deeply with others and ourselves.
Writing love stories also enables authors to connect with their readers on an emotional level. The vulnerability of putting one’s heart into a story creates a bridge between writer and reader—a shared space of empathy, understanding, and, ultimately, love.
5. The “Opiate Effect”: Comfort in Predictable JoyThere’s something inherently comforting about love stories, even if we know where they’re headed. This predictability doesn’t make them any less powerful; instead, it’s what makes them so addictive. We read to be surprised, but we also read for the certainty that, no matter how tough things get, there will be a resolution, a sense of closure, and—most of the time—a happy ending.
In a world full of unpredictability, love stories are a safe, uplifting opiate, a dose of predictable joy that reassures us of the power of love. When life feels uncertain, they’re the refuge we can turn to, knowing they’ll offer us a blend of warmth, hope, and fulfillment.
Writing Love Stories: An Opiate for the SoulFor writers, creating love stories is equally cathartic. Authors pour pieces of their own hearts into their stories, weaving in personal experiences, dreams, and vulnerabilities. This creative process can feel like a release, almost like therapy—allowing writers to explore their own relationships, fears, and desires on the page. Writing becomes a personal journey of reflection, growth, and, sometimes, healing.
Through each story, writers invite readers to join them on a path of discovery, drawing them into a shared world where love is cherished and hope is always within reach.
Why We’ll Keep Reading and Writing Love StoriesThe beauty of love stories is that they’re timeless. As long as we crave connection, understanding, and a glimmer of hope, love stories will be there to soothe, inspire, and uplift. They remind us that, even in the hardest of times, love has the power to change us. In a way, they are indeed a gentle opiate—a safe addiction that leaves us craving more.
So, whether you’re picking up your next romance read or penning a tale of star-crossed lovers, remember: love stories aren’t just about romance. They’re about resilience, humanity, and the universal desire for connection. Here’s to love stories—the sweetest opiate of all.

“My second Mollie Mathews book and definitely not the last ….funny, laugh out loud, and a delight to read …..am looking out for the movie or maybe Netflix series ……felt like a letter from a close girlfriend.”
~ Jo Oxford
“This is a one-of-a-kind full range of emotion book that if you have ever gone through a divorce and had a wonderfully supportive but definitely zany friend to get you through it all, you will relate to much of what Ms. Mathews has Ruby experience!
