She can fool herself, but I’m not gonna sit here and lie and say I could be as compatible with another woman as I am with her. From the first time we slept together, we just fit. I had high hopes that it might turn into something more, but she’s hell-bent on maintaining her single status. I’ve tried to break down her wall, brick by brick, but she just puts them all back up. The woman is impossible. And now she has the excuse of the change in our professional relationship.

Then again, maybe she’s right. Maybe I shouldn’t be fucking the owner during my first year of coaching. Still, the idea leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I lay my chopsticks on the napkin next to my plate and slide out of my chair. “Your wish, as always, Jana, is my command. See you at the office.” I wink and walk out of the kitchen.

“Kane, stop being so dramatic,” she says to my back.

But I continue toward the door. The fact that she doesn’t follow me tells me everything I need to know. No matter how hard I try, Jana might never break. I’m wasting my time.

The door shuts behind me, and I climb into my truck and drive away without putting up much of an argument, just like she wants me to.

A Green Family Vacation Excerpt

“Chevelle can stay with Grandma Ethel then,” Nikki says.

I whip around, forgetting whatever Cam was saying. “I’m sorry?”

“We’re just figuring out the rooms. We couldn’t book another room, so this way everyone has their own bed.” Nikki fills me in on a plan that I am not down with.

Grandma puts her arm around my waist and pulls me toward her. “This will be so much fun. Just us girls. Like a prolonged sleepover. Remember when you used to love to sleep over at the house?”

I fake a smile. “Yeah.” Meanwhile, I give a death stare to all my other family members until I remember… I turn and eye Cam. “Who are you staying with?”

He chuckles and glances at Fisher. “Myself.”

Cam goes around our group to the other receptionist and hands over his credit card and ID.

“What? He got a room to himself?” I’m this close to stomping my foot like a three-year-old.

My sister nods. “He got his own room.”

“And why didn’t I?”

“No one thought about it until we got here, and there are no other rooms available.” Nikki puts her hand on my arm like Marla does when she feels as though she’s disappointed us. “I’m sorry. I’m usually on top of these things, but with the baby… I’m not myself these days.”

Since she looks as if she’s seconds from crying, I suck it up. “It’s okay. Yay! A sleepover.” I look at my grandma and drum up the best smile I can.

We all get our keys and head to our rooms. They’re scattered around the resort except for mine and my grandma’s and Dori and Midge’s. Lucky for me, they booked adjoining rooms.

Seeing my dad’s name on the screen sours the burrito I just ate. The man stalks me more than the puck bunnies after a game. But I can’t ignore him.

The Bluetooth kicks in as I answer the call. “Hey, Dad.”

“When will you be able to keep your dick in your pants?”

“Franklin!” my mom hollers in the background.

“One of these days, you’re gonna get someone pregnant and you’ll have a baby mama who wants that paycheck of yours, not your dick.”

“Franklin!”

I sigh and flick on my turn signal. I don’t know where he finds this stuff. “What did you see?”

“I search your name every morning and a new article always pops up.”

“And?” I wave to get this conversation moving even if he can’t see me.

“You were in the ocean with some woman. It’s pretty clear from the pictures what you two are doing, even if it is fuzzy.”
