The Sword in the Stone (1963) – Micro Film Review

The Sword in the Stone is so much more fun than it ought to be. It has no business featuring multiple mumbo jumbo gibberishy songs from Merlin that are delightful side-trips into magic by this time-traveling magician who transfigures himself and Arthur into fish and squirrels and myriad other creatures while teaching him about the … Continue reading The Sword in the Stone (1963) – Micro Film Review

Brave (2012) – Micro Film Review

Well, we decided to add Pixar films to our Disney animated rewatch, mainly because we wanted to watch Brave. After The Princess and the Frog, we thought Brave would make a good double feature. They have a lot of similar motifs: people changing into animals, dreams being challenged, communication issues. We could’ve probably found deeper … Continue reading Brave (2012) – Micro Film Review

The Princess and the Frog (2009) – Micro Film Review

As we continue on our haphazard Disney watch-through, we’re starting by hitting films I haven’t seen often enough, and The Princess and the Frog is absolutely underseen by me—and everyone else, it seems. I have questions. Why are more people not talking about this film? Why is Tiana not set next to the best, most … Continue reading The Princess and the Frog (2009) – Micro Film Review

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) – Micro Film Review

Continuing our haphazard Disney Animated rewatch, we moved on to Atlantis: The Lost Empire as a double feature with Treasure Planet. The potential of this film is off the charts, and there are genuine moments of humor and fun and adventure. Milo (Michael J. Fox) is an underestimated linguistics and cartography fellow who just can’t … Continue reading Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) – Micro Film Review

Treasure Island (2002) – Micro Film Review

This was my first rewatch of Treasure Planet since I saw it in theaters (and I remembered none of it!), and I’m happy to report that it was really engaging and refreshing. The Hornblower-punk aesthetic of Treasure Planet is truly compelling and inspiring (to my creative writer’s heart), retelling the story of Robert Louis Stevenson’s … Continue reading Treasure Island (2002) – Micro Film Review

Fright (1971) – Micro Film Review

Fright (helmed by The Italian Job director Peter Collinsin) is a cross between Alone in the Dark and When a Stranger Calls (and both films are superior to Fright). A babysitter in an old English manor house finds herself besieged by the escaped mental patient father of the child she’s looking after. It’s weird and … Continue reading Fright (1971) – Micro Film Review

Wait Until Dark (1967) – Micro Film Review

Audrey Hepburn shines in this 1967 home invasion thriller about a blind woman who is gaslit and then terrorized by three criminals who want to find a doll that was planted on her husband by their murdered accomplice. Bond director Terence Young’s use of tension, as well as light and sound design is fantastic.
