Pacific Grove Good Old Days Festival offering arts, crafts and entertainment

The Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival is one of the city’s largest attractions of the year, celebrating community spirit, and offering a platform for locals and visitors to come together.

Dozens of art sellers, bands and vendors are listed on this year’s itinerary for the festival happening downtown this weekend. The event transforms the coastal town into a family-friendly atmosphere, offering diverse attractions, entertainment and food.

Hosted by the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce, the 65th annual festival will run on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To kick off the festival, there will be a parade on Pine Avenue at 10 a.m. Saturday featuring the 2024 Grand Marshalls Vic and Lynda Johnson.

“There’s something to do for every age group,” said Christian Metzner, interim CEO president of the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce. “We want to see everyone having a good time, it brings everyone together.”

Over 40 bands and performers will take the stage from a wide range of musical genres and more than 200 food, arts and crafts vendors will highlight the talents and flavors of the region. Hand-craft enthusiasts are also encouraged to check out the quilt show with a showcase of intricate designs.

The Kiwanis Club will host a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Sunday at Jewell Park.

There are also a lot of family events planned from carnival rides and a petting zoo, to a kids firefighter challenge on Sunday, hosted by the Monterey Firefighter Foundation.

“The firefighter challenge is one of our most popular events,” Metzner said. “The kids love it, and the firefighters that participate are always enthusiastic.”

For adults, there will be a chance to relax and unwind in the Pacific Grove Rotary’s beer and wine gardens, offering several different types of beverages to complement the festivities.

The festival took a small hiatus during the pandemic, but has been going strong since 2022, bringing many returning bands and vendors downtown, and keeping the spirit and essence of the festival going according to officials.

As of Tuesday, there is a slight chance of rain early Saturday morning, and again in the evening, but the precipitation might clear up for a cloudy day on the coast.

The Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce has been working on this event since December, reaching out to vendors and bands and drawing up plans. In all, it’s a combination of work between both Pacific Grove and Monterey County organizations to bring everyone together for a good time.

“We couldn’t do it without the other partners and city departments that participate,” Metzner said. “It takes all of them to put this on, and we’re really excited for it. We’re just hoping for good weather.”

Postcards from the Mullallys: An American history intensive

My husband, David and I were shot out of a cannon at the start of our five-month mega trip with an Atlanta marathon of grandchildren sports events before catching the overnight train to Washington DC.

Our shaken and stirred night in the closet-size sleeping compartment didn’t dim my excitement for the romance of rail travel. The morning light revealed a landscape of green swales dotted with rustic cabins as we rolled past Civil War battlefields between towns once surveyed by a young George Washington. Refreshed with a shower and refueled on the cafe’s microwaved oatmeal, we packed up for our arrival in DC’s Union Station, one of the capital’s many architectural marvels. Later, Jake Peterson, an intern in Congressman Jimmy Panetta’s office gave us an enriching tour of the Capitol that stirred a deeper appreciation for the democratic ideals it represents while infusing this Canadian-born American citizen with renewed hope for the country’s best self. Coincidently, the recent mini-series “Manhunt” about Secretary of War Edwin Stanton’s role in bringing the Lincoln assassination conspirators to justice, made the Park ranger’s talk at Ford’s Theater even more meaningful.

We cycled 120 miles of historical trails along the Potomac River from Georgetown to Alexandria, Mount Vernon and Harper’s Ferry over the next three days. On day 2 and only halfway along our 80-mile gravel towpath route, I wondered whose bright idea this had been, and then I remembered it was mine. Our derrières were relieved to arrive at the goat farm Air B&B in the sprawling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains after 10 vibrating hours in the saddle. On day 3, the shorter ride to Harper’s Ferry gave us time to learn more about abolitionist, John Brown before the train hop back to DC for a rental car pick-up.

I continued my history lesson in Philadelphia, Greek for “city of brotherly love.”  I binged on the American Revolution at Independence Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House and Benjamin Franklin’s grave. At the Quaker Meeting House, I brushed up on William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania and first Quaker rebel. I was surprised to learn that several women’s rights activists were also Quakers. The National Museum of American Jewish History, Reading Terminal Farmer’s Market and the Barnes Foundation’s collection of Cezanne and Renoir works were unexpected additional Philly highlights.

By then I had history fatigue so we pointed the car toward the bucolic Brandywine Valley and Longwood Gardens’ fountains and spring bloom extravaganza. We stumbled on a fabulous Wyeth art exhibit at the Brandywine Museum of Art minutes from the charming Inn at Whitewing Farm. We capped our East Coast jaunt farmstand hopping and sticky bun sampling in picturesque Amish country before one last stopover for a much-anticipated visit with Mullally cousins.

With my American history intensive behind me, Lisbon, Portugal was calling from across the Atlantic.

Kurtenbach: If the Warriors want to contend in 2025, they need to trade Jonathan Kuminga [Mailbag]

It’s been a while since we went to the KurtenBag.

So, let’s fix that.

Now to your questions:

Will the Warriors have to trade Kuminga for that one player who can put them over the top?

Well, the player who would put the Warriors (who were the No. 10 seed in the West) over the top is probably not going to be Kuminga anytime soon (if ever)…

So… yes.

That said, the options are rather bleak, and it takes two to tango. The Warriors are high on Kuminga; they don’t want to trade him for anything less than a sure thing. I don’t think the rest of the league shares their opinion on JK. To them, he’s a nice player with plenty of upside, but we have said the same thing about John Collins for years, didn’t we?

If you believe Kuminga (and picks and Andrew Wiggins) should go in exchange for a bonafide No. 2, you need to be hoping for sheer chaos in the league this offseason. I’m not optimistic that will happen, given the league’s parity and the new collective bargaining agreement.

I suggested a few names a couple of weeks ago (or was it days?), and the target that has grown on me the most is Dejaunte Murray.

I don’t think Murray is a superstar or even someone on the verge of stardom, but he would fill some vacancies for the Warriors.

The first is the need for someone to defend the damn ball on the perimeter. Klay Thompson used to do that, but those days are over. Andrew Wiggins did it, too, and I can’t explain why he stopped. Kuminga can do it, but not at Murray’s level. Murray is long, a former All-Defense team member, and would give the Warriors great on-the-ball pressure and the ability to switch more (a necessity in the pick-and-roll dominant NBA.)

Murray can also handle the ball and run the second unit when Steph Curry (but really Draymond Green) is off the floor. With Chris Paul likely gone, someone has to fill that job.

Murray averaged 22.5 points per game last season for the Hawks on average shooting splits. There’s room for that side of his game to grow a bit, too. He’s going into his age-28 season.

Is he a worthy upgrade over Kuminga? That depends on how you view JK.

I’d make the trade if you keep draft picks out of the mix. The Hawks seem like willing sellers — they need a re-set and the concept of Kuminga and Tre Young on the pick-and-roll could be pretty exciting. The Warriors can rightly claim they brought in another All-Star in their prime — they would likely have to replace Wiggins, though, and that’s easier said than done. (He’d be included for salary-matching purposes.)

There is another player who could be traded to the Bay this summer. His name is Kevin Durant. Ever heard of him?

Sadly, I don’t think that will happen.

Pearsall — who would you say is his pro comparison?

As a society, we’ve run out of white receivers to compare Pearsall. I’ve heard it all: Julian Edelman, Adam Thielen, and I might have suggested Cooper Kupp once or twice.

We’re a few days away from a Wayne Chrebet or Steve Largent comp.

But the actual comp is Saints Z receiver Chris Olave, albeit with appreciably more athleticism.

Like Olave, Pearsall catches everything, is fearless over the middle, and can win at all three levels. He also is poised to line up as a flanker more often than not. And seeing as Olave has caught 159 passes for 2,165 yards in his first 31 games as a pro, despite having dregs at quarterback, I think this comp, while chromatically dissonant, should please Niners fans.

Which running back will get moved, Elijah Mitchell or J.P. Mason?

I don’t think there will be a trade market for either, but if we expand your question to mean, “Which of these 49ers running backs won’t make the 2024 team?” I’m inclined to say “both.”

Mason is the one most likely not to make the team. I think he’s a good back who’s worthy of carries, but Kyle Shanahan clearly disagrees. And while Mason has been a valuable special teams player for the 49ers, San Francisco spent its offseason adding nothing but guys with good special teams upside.

Seriously, it was like a fetish.

Mason seems on the outs. Another team will reap the rewards.

And I don’t think the Niners can go into the 2024 season trusting Mitchell to stay on the field, seeing as every time he played last season, he seemingly was injured for a week or two afterward. Such is the plight of an undersized back who plays a big back’s game. He was here for a good time, not a long time.

Perhaps someone will send a seventh-round draft pick the Niners’ way for Mitchell. I doubt that happens because of the aforementioned reasons.

But if the Niners are going to carry three “true” running backs (plus a fullback), who is in?

Fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo is in, for sure. He’s Raheem Mostert with 20 extra pounds. I expect him to be a revelation this upcoming season.

And then there’s Alfred Morris 2.0 (we all remember how much Shanny loved him) — Mizzou running back (aka the best running back in America last season) and undrafted free agent Cody Schrader will take the other role.

I am biased here, as he’s a fellow True Son, but landing Schrader was a coup for the Niners.

This guy went from Truman State to walk-on at Mizzou to being the SEC’s best back on one of the nation’s best teams, putting up great games against the best competition Mizzou faced last season.

Doubt this man at your peril.

How many hours did you spend watching draft prospects?

Too many.

But seriously, I love doing draft prep, and with my podcast, KNBR radio, and this venerable establishment all wanting that sweet, sweet content, the effort was well worth it. If nothing else, I have a head start on the 2025 NFL season.

I would estimate that I put in two hours a night, six nights a week for 10 weeks. (I told you I love this stuff).

But even then, I came up short. I pride myself on having a couple of minutes (or a few hundred words) of understanding on every possible 49ers target, but I had to cram study Jarrett Kingston after he was drafted. How I missed a guard with a short shuttle time like that is unacceptable, and I apologize for the shortcoming. It won’t happen again.

‘Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’ event in Seaside to honor, raise awareness

SEASIDE – An event with the intent of giving a voice to those who no longer have one, while also bringing attention to and honoring the thousands who have gone missing or murdered, will be held this weekend on the Monterey Peninsula.

Red Dress Day in Monterey County will be a time set aside to honor “missing and murdered Indigenous people” giving folks an opportunity to learn about this “historical, social and civil rights tragedy that speaks to a deep and abiding cultural wounding that needs to be addressed,” according to a press release from event organizers.

This Saturday, Sand City Mayor Mary Ann Carbone, a member of the Chumash people, will be the host of the Red Dress Day event at the Oldemeyer Center at 986 Hilby Ave., in Seaside, from 11 a.m.-  4 p.m. This is a free event.

“This year again, we join state and nationwide efforts to continue to increase awareness, and transparency of this (Missing and Murdered Indigenous People) crisis,” said Carbone in the release. “We will also celebrate our Native-Indigenous cultural traditions through the sacred drum, singers and storytellers.”

The 2024 Red Dress Day event to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous People will begin with a memorial featuring the Indigenous Unity Singers, followed by a keynote by Assemblyman James Ramos, a member of the Serrano-Cahuilla people, a Missing and Murdered Indigenous People panel, traditional Native-Indigenous storytellers, drummers and dancers, and a Red Dress Art Installation to remember the Indigenous women and girls we have lost.

For too many generations, Native and Indigenous individuals and communities have mourned missing and murdered loved ones, organizers said.

A mandate issued by President Biden in 2022 made the plight of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People a top priority of the United States Department of Justice, the Department of the Interior under Secretary Deb Haaland, and with the endorsement of Governor Newsom, California Attorney General Rob Bonta.

In 2023, Carbone led the first Monterey County Missing and Murdered Indigenous People response with the Red Dress Day event to remember and raise awareness.

The first ever Red Dress Day was inspired in 2010 by Jamie Black, a Metis artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Black hung hundreds of empty red dresses in public places to represent missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and to bring awareness to the issue.

In Canada, Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, is observed on May 5. The day honors and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada.

Though Two-Spirit may now be included in the umbrella of LGBTQ, the term “Two-Spirit” does not simply mean someone who is a Native American/Alaska Native and gay, according to Indian Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Traditionally, Native American two-spirit people were male, female and sometimes intersexed individuals who combined activities of both men and women with traits unique to their status as two-spirit people, said the agency. In most tribes, they were considered neither men nor women; they occupied a distinct, alternative gender status.

‘The Idea of You’ review: Boy band-flavored romance fails to keep the beat

Hot on the heels of the controversial 2024 erotic thriller “Miller’s Girl” landing on Netflix — causing lead Martin Freeman to offer a fresh defense of the movie and the age gap between him and his 31-years-younger co-star, Jenna Ortega — comes another movie built upon a May-December romance.

However, we expect no such fervor over the relatively tame “The Idea of You,” an Amazon MGM Studios release debuting this week on Prime Video.

For starters, the age gap is roughly half of that of the “Miller’s Girl”: Anne Hathaway’s Solène is freshly 40, while Nicholas Galitzine’s Hayes is 24.

And this is no erotic thriller, but instead a romance, albeit one with a couple of admirable moments of striking but authentic-feeling intimacy.

However, despite an excellent performance by Hathaway as the Los Angeles art gallery director and divorced mom, the adaptation of Robinne Lee’s novel falls a little flat.

It is the rare miss — and, to be fair, at most a minor miss — from director and co-writer Michael Showalter, whose impressive list of films includes “The Big Sick,” “The Lovebirds” and “Spoiler Alert.”

The setup is hokey but cute, Solène meeting Hayes at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival when she mistakes his trailer for a VIP restroom.

You see, she’s there because her cocky-but-flaky ex-husband, Daniel (Reid Scott of “Veep”), bowed out at the last minute, choosing business over taking their teen daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), and her friends to the fest. The big draw — more for Izzy’s friends than her, as she’s now into female singer-songwriters with something to say — is the boy band August Moon, of which Hayes is a member.

Once Hayes clues Solène into who he is and finds out why she’s there, he attempts to confirm Izzy is a fan.

“She was,” Solène says.

“Ouch,” he says, listening further as she quotes her daughter saying the band is “so seventh-grade.”

Soon, there’s a VIP meet-and-greet, with the pair getting a few more chances to exchange glances as Izzy and pals snag autographs and pics with the band, followed by a performance during which Hayes makes an apparent change to the setlist so he can sing a song for someone he met on this day.

Solène seems to enjoy this little injection of some excitement into her life but figures that is that — until Hayes shows up in her gallery in Silver Lake under the auspices of needing to furnish a London apartment. (How much does he want to impress her? He buys EVERYTHING.)

Next thing you know, they’re fleeing to her house to escape overly enthusiastic fans who’ve tracked him to the gallery. At her piano, we get a taste of that aforementioned intimacy, but Solène eventually slams on the breaks.

Hayes, however, has a few moves up his sleeves in the days ahead, and, before she knows it, Solène is being whisked around another continent with Hayes, the other band members and their (much younger) female acquaintances.

Can they avoid unwanted media attention? Can the world just let these two be happy together? (Um, no and no.)

The screenplay, by Showalter and “Kissing Jessica Stein” writer, director and star Jennifer Westfeldt, is of the herky-jerky variety, with Solene jumping all in and pulling back out a bit too often for the movie to find a real groove. Moments of real happiness (Wang Chung hotel room karaoke!) quickly give way to intense heartache (the mean Internet). And back and forth we go!

Again, though, Hatheway (“Les Misérables,” “Interstellar”) is in ultra-fine form, oozing with all the emotions Solène experiences, Galitzine (“Mary & George,” “Red, White & Royal Blue”) isn’t in the same class. He can sing and play guitar and piano, so he checks the role’s boy band-related boxes, but he struggles to make us feel Hayes’ intense need for Solène. Sure, these are two attractive people, so it’s not as if they’re not at all believable together, but the chemistry isn’t where it needs to be.

Nevertheless, you cannot simply dismiss the movie as another ho-hum romance as, like some of the musical artists Izzy now appreciates, it has something to offer from a feminist perspective — commentary about how the happiness of a woman tends to be prioritized by others less than what is expected of her.

Still, the idea of “The Idea of You” is better than the film itself.

How to make Chinese dumplings at home

When it comes to Chinese comfort food, nothing beats a really good bowl of hand-pulled noodles or a steaming, silky bowl of mapo tofu. Yet our love affair with Chinese food often centers around dumplings.

Whether they’re boiled, steamed or pan-fried, it’s just so easy to eat five, six or even a dozen of the plump and juicy dough bundles stuffed with ground meat and/or vegetables. And you don’t even need to head to your favorite Chinese restaurant or order takeout to enjoy them.

With a bit of practice, most home cooks will find jiaozi fairly easy (and fun!) to make, especially if you get an assembly line going and opt for pre-made wrappers.

Because they’re shaped like ancient Chinese ingots, dumplings are often a celebratory food in China, enjoyed during holidays such as the Lunar New Year, when they symbolize wealth and prosperity for the upcoming year. But that’s not always the case. Former Pittsburgher Hannah Che, who wrote the James Beard Award-winning “The Vegan Chinese Kitchen” in 2022, grew up eating them any time the family got together.

Dumplings take quite a few forms in China, depending on the province and region, says Che. Since both parents are from northern China, her family mostly ate boiled dumplings. Dumpling-making was also very much a joint effort, with her father rolling the homemade dough wrappers, most everyone else filling and pleating them and her mom handling the cooking.

It would have been quicker and easier to use the inexpensive frozen wrappers you can find in any Asian market, and she’s quick to point out there’s no shame in going the convenience route. In fact, this is how many Chinese home cooks make dumplings.

“It’s just we always made the dough from scratch,” Che says on an early morning phone call from Dali in China’s southwestern Yunnan province, where she is working on a second cookbook that will focus on tofu.

Dumplings from scratch are better for one simple reason: texture.

“Homemade dumplings just always have a more satisfying mouth feel,” Che says.

Also, scratch wrappers only require mixing all-purpose flour and water, then letting the dough rest for a little bit to become smooth and silky before kneading and rolling it out. “You don’t need any leavening.”

That said, she still has some tips to make rolling, stuffing and pinching homemade dumplings a little easier for beginners.

For starters, if you’re going to boil the dumplings, it’s important to use cold water when mixing the dough because it will give you a thicker skin. Otherwise, they will fall apart in boiling water. (If you’re going to pan-fry the dumplings, however, use hot water for a more delicate wrapper.)

You need to get the proportion of water to flour just right; if it’s too soft, it will fall apart under the weight of the filling. This is the one time you might consider using a scale to weigh both water and flour.

“It should be really elastic, but still stiff,” Che says.

It’s also essential to allow the dough to rest on the counter (to relax it and make it easier to roll), and aim for consistently sized portions when you pinch or cut the dough after rolling or spinning it into ropes.

Rolling the dough between two pieces of parchment paper eases the process. You also might consider using a tortilla press if you’ve got one handy — especially if you’re intimidated by the thought of all that rolling.

“It’s a definite time saver!” she says.

The wrappers don’t have to be a perfect circle, just roundish.

When it comes to preparing a meat filling, combinations are endless, but Che says it’s important to add in some chives, green onions or chopped cabbage “so there is something juicy (but not watery) in there besides the meat.”

If you’d rather go vegetarian, you need similar aromatics along with “something meaty” like tofu or tofu skin to give the dumpling some heft.

“You can also include vermicelli or glass noodles because you can chop it up really nice, and it adds this richness and texture to the filling that is really satisfying,” she says.

Just be sure to squeeze a vegetarian filling to remove any excess water. And you’ll also want to go heavier on the salt than you would ordinarily on both varieties because the dough wrapper will subdue the seasonings.

Another time-saver: Use a food processor instead of mixing all the ingredients by hand.

“It really saves a lot of time, and you want something pasty,” says Che.

Now you’re ready to stuff and pleat the bundles.

Since the primary goal is to keep the filling inside, and elaborate pinches take a lot of practice, settle for a basic half-moon shape unless you really want to make it look pretty. This is especially true if you’re simply going to boil them, says Che. Fancy edges are more for steamed dumplings served for dim sum, where the presentation is more refined.

Make sure the finished dumplings are flat on the bottom. It makes them easier to pick up with a pair of chopsticks.

Che’s final words of advice: Find a partner or, even better, several.

“Dumpling making is definitely more enjoyable when it’s a communal activity,” she says.

All those bodies working in unison, in fact, is what makes dumplings a celebration food in Chinese culture.

“It takes so long, you might as well have lots of hands,” she says, laughing.

This dough comes together, rolls out easily and can be used regardless of filling or the cooking method. Since I was making them by myself, I halved the recipe for a smaller batch of about 50 dumplings stuffed with a classic cabbage-and-pork filling.

If you’re going to freeze the dumplings, place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet and freeze until hard before storing in a plastic bag.

For an easy dipping sauce, stir together 2 tablespoons of black vinegar, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, a pinch of sugar and a heaping teaspoon (or more) of chili crisp, chili oil or sriracha.

For dough

4 cups (560 grams) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting3/4 teaspoon salt1 cup plus 3 tablespoons (280 grams) cold water

For filling

1 pound ground pork1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger root4 cloves garlic, minced2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onion4 tablespoons soy sauce3 tablespoons sesame oil1 cup finely chopped Chinese cabbage

Prepare dough. Put flour in a large bowl and add all the water. Mix together with a pair of chopsticks until all the flakes come together in a shaggy ball. Start kneading dough with your hands and incorporate any remaining flour. Let rest 5 minutes, then knead again until it is taut, smooth and firm, about 7 minutes.

Cover with a tea towel and allow dough to rest for 15 minutes. Dough should feel slightly tacky, but not damp.

While dough is resting, prepare filling. In a large bowl, combine pork, ginger, garlic, green onion, soy sauce, sesame oil and cabbage. Stir until well mixed.

Once rested, divide dough in half. Form one portion into a ball, poke a hole in the center and shape like a doughnut. Lift dough so gravity causes the bottom to stretch and gently shape with your hands as it grows skinnier, forming an O-shaped rope.

When the rope is 3/4 inch in diameter, break doughnut into a long rope and tear off 3/4 -inch pieces with a sharp, quick snap of your wrist. (They should weigh about 10 grams.) You can also use a knife or pastry scraper. Dust pieces with flour and repeat with remaining dough.

Roll each piece into a small ball, then flatten it between palms to create a disc resembling a wafer cookie. Press thumb into dough to create a “belly” in the center.

Roll dough ball into a circle about 3 inches in diameter. (The edges should be thinner than the center.) Don’t worry if it’s not perfect; it only needs to be roundish. The key is to keep size consistent so dumplings cook consistently.

Place 2 teaspoons of filling onto each dumpling round. If you don’t want to pleat the dumplings, the easiest way to seal them is to fold the wrapper over the filling into a half-moon shape. Match the edges together and press as if you were sealing an envelope. There is no need to seal homemade wrappers with water. (There is enough moisture in the dough to seal.)

Hold sealed edge of dumpling between fingers, press bottom belly of the dumpling into a board so it stands up. Place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper and repeat with remaining dumplings.

To boil: Bring 4 quarts water to a boil. Add 10-12 dumplings and gently stir. When water returns to a boil, add 1 cup of cold water and bring water back to a boil. Dumplings are done when they are puffed up and floating on the surface, about 5 minutes. Remove from pot to plate with a large slotted spoon or strainer.

To steam: Line steamer basket with steamer paper and place prepared dumplings in a single layer in the basket, with 1 inch between each. Place basket on top of pot and steam, covered, for 8-10 minutes, or until wrappers puff up. (Meat fillings will take longer.)

To pan-fry: Preheat a 9-inch skillet over medium heat for 1 minute. Add enough vegetable oil to coat bottom surface, then carefully arrange dumplings in a single layer, flat side down. Add 1/2 cup water to skillet and cover immediately. Cook for 7-9 minutes, until water has evaporated and bottoms of dumplings are golden brown.

SALINAS — The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office intervened and prevented a potential scam in Salinas last week according to a press release.

Police were called to a local bank in Salinas April 26, after a woman reported that her daughter had been kidnapped and the alleged kidnappers were demanding a ransom. The woman was at the bank to withdraw the money, and told police she was still on the phone with them and they were watching her from the parking lot causing her to fear for her safety.

The people on the phone were demanding $10,000 in cash. When she told them she didn’t have the money, they asked for $1,000 instead.

Police were able to contact the woman’s adult daughter and confirm that she was safe. The woman then continued to help police by staying on the line and trying to locate the people through their phone number. However, traces of the phone number revealed it was being masked by technology, which police say is a common tactic used by phone scammers to conceal their location.

Finally, the people on the phone asked the woman to drive to a local store and wire transfer $1,000 before the call ended. At this point, the Sheriff’s Office reported the people were probably not there in the parking lot.

Ultimately, the woman did not lose any money.
