Top prospect Bryce Eldridge headlines SF Giants’ Arizona Fall League roster
A whirlwind season for the Giants’ top draft pick from a year ago isn’t over yet.
After starting the season in Single-A San Jose, Bryce Eldridge made it to Sacramento for the end of the Triple-A season, and soon, the 19-year-old first baseman will join his fifth team, the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League.
The Giants had already outlined plans for Eldridge, drafted 16th overall last July, to participate in the AFL when they promoted him to Triple-A. But those plans became official Wednesday with the release of the AFL rosters, which included seven other San Francisco farmhands.
In addition to Eldridge, the team will feature pitchers Marques Johnson, William Kempner, Cale Lansville, Elijah Pleasants, and Tyler Vogel, as well as infielder Charlie Szykowny and outfielder Bo Davidson. Dennis Pelfrey, the skipper of the Giants’ Double-A affiliate, will manage the team.
Like Eldridge, Szykowny and Davidson each completed promising first full professional seasons. Szykowny, a 24-year-old shortstop, hit .295 with a .813 OPS between San Jose and High-A Eugene after being drafted in the ninth round last summer. Davidson, 22, went undrafted but lit up Single-A, batting .328 with a 1.042 OPS.
The pitching group is largely made up of guys who missed time due to injury. The Giants spent a third-round pick on Kempner in 2022, but he hasn’t thrown a pitch this season. They acquired Johnson, 24, from Boston for Mauricio Llovera, but he didn’t make his season debut until mid-August.

Like Davidson, he didn’t hear his name called in the amateur draft and eventually landed with the newly formed Oakland Ballers. After appearing in a handful of games for the independent league team, the Giants signed him to a contract and assigned him to Single-A San Jose, where he posted a 3.42 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 47⅓ innings.
The spotlight, though, will be on Eldridge, whose stratospheric ascent will make him one of the most highly regarded prospects in the AFL. He is considered the No. 50 prospect in the game by MLB.com, one of 12 in its top 100 rankings set to participate, and the highest-rated on the Scottsdale squad.
It should amount to some of the best competition Eldridge has faced as a pro, though he hasn’t been slowed down by anything yet. He finished the year hitting .289 with 23 home runs and a .885 OPS across four levels of the minor leagues. In eight games at Triple-A, he was contained to seven singles in 31 at-bats, a .226 average, but four were still struck at 100 mph or harder.
Holiday travel outlook: when to book Thanksgiving and Christmas flights
Mia Taylor | (TNS) TravelPulse
For more than a few globetrotters, booking holiday airfare is a dreaded chore.
Because let’s face it, who enjoys being gouged on ticket prices in order to spend Thanksgiving or Christmas with loved ones?
If you happen to fall into that bucket of irritated holiday travelers, read on. Hopper has just released a holiday travel cheat sheet. Translation: When to book your holiday ticket in order to score the biggest savings (Or at least avoid being quite so drastically overcharged.)
Here’s what the experts at Hopper have to say about holiday travel 2024.
Thanksgiving 2024Airfare for Thanksgiving trips is currently averaging $298 per round-trip ticket, which is a steep 10% higher from this time last year and 3% higher than the prepandemic cost.
But here’s the good news. While prices are higher than historic levels today, they are expected to decline by about $40 on average until they reach their lowest point in early October.
So, mark that on your our calendar: Book holiday tickets in October.
It seems October is what the experts at Hopper call “the sweet spot” for snagging your holiday flight tickets. At that point, prices are likely to be in line with 2023 levels, and below 2019 levels.
Christmas 2024Here’s another insider’s tip: October is also the best time to book your Christmas flights.
Currently, airfare for Christmas trips is averaging $406 per round-trip ticket, says Hopper. That’s an increase of 4% from this time last year and a whopping 13% above prepandemic prices.
While those ticket prices may be higher than historic levels today, they too are expected to fall, and will do so by about $80 until they reach their lowest point in October.
When Christmas fares reach their October sweet spot, the prices are likely to be in line with 2023 levels, says Hopper.
A few more money-saving detailsIf you’re a frequent flyer, you likely know this already, but being flexible on travel dates can help you save quite a bit of money during the holiday rush.
Hopper says it’s possible to save more than $100 off peak airfare by flying on less popular dates before and after each holiday week during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“Departing the week before Thanksgiving or on the Monday ahead of the holiday will save travelers the most,” says Hopper. “Savvy travelers will save 23% or about $60 per ticket by departing on the Thursday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 21) or the Monday of Thanksgiving week (Nov. 25) instead of taking a weekend flight.”
As for that dreaded return flight after Thanksgiving, it should come as no surprise that the Sunday immediately after the big day is no time to be in the airport.
It is the most popular day to return for Thanksgiving travelers, and also the most expensive, per Hopper.
“Travelers returning on Sunday will pay a 45% premium, or $137 per ticket more than those travelers who return the following day, Monday,” says Hopper. “Skip the Sunday return and fly home on Black Friday, or Monday, Dec. 2, to pack on the savings.”
Similarly, for Christmas, travelers hoping to get the best prices for domestic trips should plan to be flexible on their travel dates, says Hopper.
Departing the week before Christmas or on Christmas Eve or Day will save travelers the most. Savvy travelers will save 26% or about $100 per ticket by departing on Christmas Eve instead of taking a flight the weekend before the holiday.
Meanwhile, the week following Christmas is an especially pricey week for domestic travel, as Americans head home from Christmas trips and head out on New Year’s trips.
For travelers headed home from the holiday, New Year’s Eve departures will be the most cost effective, saving travelers about $68 per ticket on average.
Oct. 14 is deadline for dealsIf scoring a deal during the October “sweet spot” that Hopper is projecting is on your must-do list, then you’ll need to book airfare by October 14.
“Airfare will drop from now until the end of September, then remain low and volatile in October before rising in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas,” says the Hopper report. “Over the next few weeks while prices are volatile, travelers who are proactively monitoring prices could get notified of great, time-sensitive deals.”
Airfare deals by regionHere’s one last bit of parting information that may be helpful. If your holiday travel plans are not tied to a specific location, consider bring the family party to a bargain travel destination.
Hopper says airfare to international destinations in Mexico and Central America, popular for shorter holiday trips, is down compared to last year, with prices averaging $464 per round-trip ticket.
Airfare to Europe, the top destination for international travelers from the U.S., is down 7% compared to this time last year.
You’re welcome.

Fire pit tables that turn your patio into a cozy retreat
Entertaining outdoors is a great way to spend time with friends and family, but it can get chilly in the open air. A fire pit table is a perfect solution for outdoor gatherings, providing warmth for everyone sitting together, along with a table edge for food and drinks.
Below you’ll find all the information you need to select the right fire pit table, along with a few recommended models, including the excellent Outland Living 403 Series Propane Fire Pit.
What to know before you buy a fire pit tableFuel typePropane gas is probably the most popular fuel type for fire pit tables. Propane comes in convenient bottles and there’s no cleanup, unlike solid fuel fire pits.
Natural gas is another option, generally reserved for high-end fire pit tables. Models that run on natural gas must be fitted to a natural gas line, similar to a gas stove, so you’ll need a professional gas engineer to install one. Once it’s fitted, you won’t be able to move it.
Solid fuel fire pit tables can accommodate wood or charcoal. These models are generally affordable and are a good choice if you have access to free wood. However, they produce smoke, and there’s a great deal of cleanup involved after use.
Construction materialFire pit tables must use fireproof and heat-resistant materials in the design, such as metal — most commonly steel or cast iron. Aluminum is lightweight and inexpensive but not highly durable. Any metal parts exposed to the elements should be powder-coated or otherwise made rust-resistant. Some models feature a plastic or resin faux-rattan exterior to ensure the body of the table stays cool to the touch and creates a relaxed outdoor vibe.
What to look for in a quality fire pit tableEasy ignitionIf you choose a propane or natural gas fire pit table, it should be easy to ignite. Most feature a simple push-button ignition, so lighting is straightforward. Lighting a solid fuel fire pit is more of a hassle, as you’ll need firelighters or similar to ignite the fuel.
Heat outputThe heat output of propane fire pit tables is measured in British Thermal Units. A quality model has an output of 35,000-50,000 BTU. This kind of output should warm a small patio area, though the exact heating radius varies depending on the weather conditions. You should adjust the heat output of a fire pit table to keep it at a comfortable level.
SizeCheck the size of any fire pit table you’re considering to make sure it will accommodate as many people around it as you’d like. It’s better to get a table slightly larger than you need to enjoy as much of a fire pit as possible, assuming you have the space for it.
How much you can expect to spend on a fire pit tableYou can find some inexpensive fire pit tables for $100-$200, while the most expensive models can cost $1,000 or more.
Fire pit table FAQShould you cover a fire pit table?A. It’s highly recommended to cover a fire pit table when it’s not in use to protect it from rain, as well as dirt and debris. Some models come with a cover included, but you may need to buy a suitable cover separately. Remember not to put the cover on your fire pit until it has cooled completely.
Can you cook over a fire pit table?A. You can cook over a fire pit table, but it isn’t recommended to grill over a natural gas or propane model because you’ll end up with a huge mess to clear up. This isn’t such an issue with solid fuel models since you’ll need to clean the ashes out anyway, so you can clear any cooking mess out with them. If you want to cook on a propane or natural gas fire pit, use a Dutch oven or cast iron skillet.

Time-saving onion choppers every home cook needs
Onions are a popular vegetable for spicing up meals and garnishing entrees — the average American eats 20 pounds of onions each year. But preparing onions can be messy, and as many people know, cutting them releases sulfuric compounds that cause our eyes to water. So slicing onions can be a tearful kitchen adventure. Onion choppers save the day by not only easily dicing onions but also trapping the eye-irritating odor in the machine.
What to know before you buy an onion chopperManual vs. electric onion choppersChoppers are either manual or electric.
Manual choppers work by pushing the onion through the blade grid or pulling a string that rotates blades around the onion or other vegetables. They are usually less expensive, but the cutting can be inconsistent, which is a problem if the presentation is important.Electric choppers have powerful motors that are more reliable and simply require pushing a button. They are more expensive but can handle larger quantities and offer different cutting styles.SizesMany choppers are designed for slicing one onion, which typically meets the need of a single meal at home. If you need to chop a lot of onions at once for a party or larger meal, look at choppers that can cut multiple vegetables simultaneously.
Chopping optionsThe most basic choppers dice onions as they pass through the blade grid. If you need a thinner cut, you may need to manually cut the onion before putting it in the chopper, or put the first cut of onion through the chopper again.
Many choppers come with multiple blades that can be interchanged for different styles of cuts. These choppers cost a little more than basic ones that only dice.
What to look for in a quality onion chopperBladesAll choppers have stainless steel blades for easy slicing. The blades in manual box choppers are not removable, so they dull over time. When that happens, it is usually time to purchase a new chopper. Other choppers feature blades that can be removed and sharpened, extending the chopper’s life. Consult a professional knife or blade sharpener to maintain your safety and ensure the blades are properly sharpened.
BaseChopper bases are either plastic or stainless steel. The steel bases are naturally heavier and help hold the machine in place. Regardless of base material, look for choppers with rubberized bottoms that add an extra layer of grip when the chopper is in use.
ContainerThe container that comes with a chopper is usually plastic, although high-end units have glass bowls. The container size varies, so look for the size that fits your cooking needs. Some hold a small quantity of around 1 cup, while others are designed for larger meal preparations and hold over a quart of onions and vegetables.
Dishwasher-safeNearly all chopper components, including the blades, are dishwasher-safe, which makes for quick and easy tear-down and cleanup. Use caution when removing the blades, and always unplug the chopper beforehand. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for additional suggestions about proper cleaning techniques.
How much you can expect to spend on an onion chopperFor $15-$30, you will find basic manual choppers made of plastic with stainless steel blade grids. More powerful choppers with multiple cutting styles cost $30-$60, and for the serious chef who often chops large quantities of onions, commercial-grade choppers are $60-$120.
Onion chopper FAQCan the onion chopper be used with other vegetables?A. Most onion choppers are advertised as vegetable choppers. Most vegetables will work with them, but check the manufacturer’s list of recommended vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, radishes and carrots. Also, consider whether you want to cut vegetables together or separate each kind of vegetable.
What is the best way to remove the onion smell from the container?A. Even with regular cleaning, the container can take on a slight onion smell over time. Try soaking the bowl in vinegar and then rewashing it. This should help remove the onion odor.
Do all onions taste the same?A. There are many varieties of onions. Popular Valencia, Spanish and yellow onions, for instance, each have a distinct flavor. Use your chopper to taste-test them and pick your favorite.

Conquer the trails with these top trail running shoes
Trail running allows those who enjoy the hobby to get needed exercise while enjoying the outdoors, but it’s easier to appreciate and enjoy something when you are comfortable. Purchasing the best trail running shoe for both comfort and durability will make all the difference in long-distance runs through rugged terrain.
When purchasing a good pair of trail running shoes, consider the material, traction and size of the shoe. A top choice, the Saucony Women’s Peregrine 11 Trail Running Shoe, is a favorite among many due to its durable make and light weight.
What to know before you buy a trail running shoeMaterialTrail running shoes are made with materials that can withstand more wear and tear than normal running shoes due to the rough terrains they encounter. Mesh fabric is breathable and helps prevent rips in the shoe while the presence of rubber lugs in the outsole provide better off-road traction.
TractionThe traction of a trail shoe is specifically designed to grip onto rugged terrain and allow for convenient runs through dirt, mud, gravel and roots. Traction can determine other factors, such as balance and where you are able to hike. If you are hiking an icy winter trail and a shoe does not have grip or traction, you will lack stability.
SizeGet your foot sized before purchasing a good pair of trail running shoes. Shoes that are too small can cause blisters and foot pain. Your left foot and your right foot may not be the same size and can differ by as much as a full shoe size. When you have found the right-sized shoe for each foot, the trail run will be more comfortable.
What to look for in a quality trail running shoeCushionIn general, shoes with built-in protection and cushioning provide more comfort and support than other options. If you do not run long distances and are most concerned with comfort, look into a thicker outsole. If you run a lot, look for a 0mm drop heel for a greater range of motion and added comfort.
Outsole supportThe soles of trail running shoes are designed to grip an uneven trail surface. Large lugs, teeth and a stickier rubber offer better traction to get you over and through dirt, mud, rocks, plants and all sorts of other natural debris. Most trail running shoes have rock plates made out of hard plastic located in the midsole area that protect your foot from rocks and sharp sticks.
Weather protectionA good trail running shoe has enough traction to make it easier to run in slick or rough conditions, but it is often not waterproof. Waterproof trail-running shoes are usually not needed, even if the area you’re running in is wet or rain is in the forecast. Waterproof shoes tend to trap water inside the shoe, causing the feet to overheat and sweat. It’s important that the shoe is breathable but not waterproof.
How much you can expect to spend on a trail running shoeRunners on a budget can find trail running shoes between $70 and $80, and midrange shoes usually are $90-$100. Premium trail running shoes that include all the best features cost $100-$130.
Trail running shoe FAQWhat’s the difference between a trail shoe and a road shoe?A. Trail running shoes are designed for tough, rugged, rocky and natural surfaces. Due to the various terrains they will be used on, they are more durable and heavier than an everyday running shoe. Road shoes are designed for paved paths with very few environmental factors, meaning they don’t have the extra grip or durability needed for the rough terrain of natural trails in the great outdoors.
Can you wear road shoes to run trails?A. This largely depends on how often you run on trails. If you’re a runner who constantly runs on trails, road shoes won’t last as long and can quickly be ruined. Consider purchasing shoes specifically for trail hiking to protect your feet and ankles, make your shoes last longer and be the most comfortable on your run.

What you’ll love: The 0mm drop between heel and toe allows the greatest range of motion in the ankle. The shoe is very cushioned, with a wider-fitting toe box and an ultra-thin outsole, which is great for various terrain and traction.
What you should consider: The extra cushion adds weight to the shoes, and some wearers noticed foot pain after running.

The best wine aerators for full-bodied flavor
Wine has two natural enemies: light and air. Although the best way to preserve your favorite vintage is to keep it in a dark, cool place, when you’re ready to drink it, letting it breathe for at least 30 minutes unleashes the wine’s delicious bouquet and complex flavors.
If you have neglected to decant the wine ahead of time and you’re ready to have a taste, a wine aerator can save the day. These simple tools swirl air through the wine to help develop its fullest flavor in just seconds. For effortless aeration at the touch of a button, the Aervana Original Electric Wine Aerator is a good choice.
What to know before you buy a wine aeratorMethod of aerationA wine aerator may seem like an odd expense. After all, doesn’t wine become aerated on its own with time? Yes, but sometimes you need a faster way to unlock the wine’s complex tasting profile.
The key is to choose the aeration method that works best for you. Budget aerators may not perform much better than simply letting a wine sit for a while. These have a small hole that introduces air into the wine but no method for swirling the air into the wine.
More expensive aerators push and blend air into the wine. You know it’s working when your wine gurgles. This method of multi-stage aerator also removes sediments that can influence the wine’s taste.
Full bottle aeration vs. one glass at a timeIf you are a party of one, there’s no sense in introducing air into an entire bottle of wine. Look for an aerator that delivers one delicious glass at a time.
On the other hand, if you’re having a dinner party, it seems unnecessary to use a single-service aerator. A full bottle aerator is the best choice in that situation.
MaterialsYou have choices when it comes to wine aerator materials. They are commonly made from:
AcrylicStainless steelPlasticRubberMost high-end aerators are made from stainless steel, which is easier to clean and more durable. However, these come with a sometimes hefty price tag.
What to look for in a quality wine aeratorSolid constructionWine aeration is not a full-contact sport, but the aerator you choose should still be sturdy and well-made. Look for seamless pouring spouts and sturdy attachment points built from high-quality metals and plastics.
Food-safe materialsAnything made from plastic and designed for food or drink service must be labeled as food-safe. If your wine aerator is plastic, it should be BPA-free.
Multiple usesIt’s a terrible waste of a beautiful vintage when an open bottle is spoiled by too much air. Look for a wine aerator that also doubles as a stopper or cork. This keeps wine fresh.
Universal fitAlthough most wine bottles follow industry standards in terms of openings for easier corkage, some are slightly larger or smaller than others. Wine aerators with a flexible silicone piece that enters the mouth of the bottle are more useful than a rigid plastic insert that does not conform to variations in size.
How much you can expect to spend on a wine aeratorThe price of an aerator will vary depending on a few factors (e.g., if it’s electric or if it aerates a full bottle or single glass of wine). Expect to spend $10-$50.
Wine aerator FAQDo wines that are decanted still need aeration?A. Yes. Heavy-bodied wines should be aerated as they are decanted and allowed to sit for a few more minutes.
If a wine is not fully in flavor after it’s decanted, aeration can help.
Do you have to use a wine aerator?A. No. Nathan Myhrvold, author of the seminal molecular gastronomical book “Modernist Cuisine” suggests a simpler method that uses an immersion blender.
Pour wine into a bowl (or wide-mouthed decanter).Use an immersion blender to aerate the wine for 30 seconds. This is not the most sophisticated presentation of wine, but it does the trick in the pinch.
Alternatively, many people allow their wine to sit for longer. Air naturally enters the wine over time.
What’s the best wine aerator to buy?Top wine aeratorAervana Original Electric Wine Aerator
What you need to know: It is expensive, but wine connoisseurs swear by it.
What you’ll love: It’s electronic and aerates wine instantly with six times the aeration of non-electric gravity aerators. Plastic parts are food safe, and it comes with an easy operating manual. The design minimizes splashing and drips.
What you should consider: The tube is too short for large bottles.
Top wine aerator for the moneyHaley’s Corker 5-In-1 Wine Aerator
What you need to know: It’s one tool to handle every aspect of wine service.
What you’ll love: It aerates and filters wine at the same time. You’ll have no more messy bits of cork floating in your final glass. The airtight stopper is spill-proof and keeps wine fresh. It’s also available in a screw-top version.
What you should consider: Even though this is billed as being leak-proof, you need to store wine bottles upright after opening, as some users report leaks.

What you need to know: The Rabbit is a well-known tool recommended by wine pros and amateur oenophiles alike.
What you’ll love: It is silicone and stainless steel, which makes it both easy to clean and sturdy for years of use. An oversized bowl increases aeration for deeper, more complex flavors.
What you should consider: This fits most bottles but not all. Use caution if the opening is especially large.

SF Giants continue late-season streak with 11-0 rout of D’backs, clinch 3rd straight series
Patrick Bailey launched a second-inning home run and four teammates followed with their own as the San Francisco Giants continued to romp through their final road trip of the season, despite being eliminated from playoff contention.
With an 11-0 rout over the Diamondbacks (87-71), the Giants (79-79) claimed their third of three series on the trip and achieved something that had evaded them all season. It was their fifth straight victory, a season-best, and their seventh in eight games overall since hitting the road.
The loss cut Arizona’s lead a playoff position down to half a game, while the Giants’ wins have been so convincing that not only did they improve their record back to .500 for the first time since August 28, they improved their run differential into the positive at plus-3. They’ll go for their second sweep of the trip and attempt to extend their late-season winning streak to six games Wednesday (6:40 p.m.) with Mason Black on the mound against D’backs ace Zac Gallen.
Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s win:
Finishing strongIf these were the Giants who showed up all season, they’d be making postseason preparations instead of vacation plans.
Against three teams who do have their sights set on the playoffs, the Giants have thrown four shutouts and scored nine or more runs three times while going to 7-1 with a run differential of 38-12. This is the same team, mind you, that was shut out three times while losing the final four games of its previous home stand.

For the second time on the trip, they hit five home runs, as Michael Conforto, Brett Wisely, Heliot Ramos and Tyler Fitzgerald joined Bailey in the power display. The catcher opened a 1-0 lead in the second, Conforto and Wisely each went deep in a six-run second, Ramos made it 8-0 in the fourth and Fitzgerald tacked on two more in the fifth. Prior to their five-homer game Saturday in Kansas City, the only other time they had done it was April 13 at Tampa Bay.
Bailey had been quietly putting together a nice finish to the season at the plate but had been stuck on seven home runs since the All-Star break. When he finally got No. 8, after drought of 175 at-bats, there was no doubt about it. He got all of Brandon Pfaddt’s 3-1 fastball and sent it at 109.1 off the bat, 422 feet to right field.
That wasn’t even the hardest-hit ball of the game from Bailey, who also laced a single at 110.1 mph off the bat.
Ramos collected his first career four-hit game and has hit safely in 14 of the 18 games he has started in September. And with his three-run shot in the third, Conforto reached the 20-homer mark for the first time since 2019.
200 inningsWith six shutout innings, Logan Webb earned the win to improve to 13-10, lowering his ERA to 3.47.

It pushed the Giants’ workhorse ace over the 200-inning threshold for the second straight season, becoming the first San Francisco pitcher to do so since Jeff Samardzija in 2016-17.
Webb has said he was inspired by the guys like Samardzija who surrounded him in the rotation when he was a rookie, but the truth is, there are fewer and fewer of their breed. There were 15 200-inning pitchers in 2017, as opposed to five in 2023 and just three, including Webb, so far in 2024.
.500?It didn’t seem to be a realistic goal when the Giants hit the road, but they have put a .500 finish within reach.
The Giants can’t finish any better than 83-79, but they can avoid a losing record by winning just half of their four remaining games.
The best reusable drinking straws for eco-friendly sipping
These days, most of us are looking for ways to be a little kinder to the planet. You might not give much thought to the plastic straws you use to drink your favorite beverages, but they can actually damage the environment, especially our oceans.

Made from durable materials you can wash after each use, they cut down on plastic waste while still allowing you to sip your soda or water the way you like. Best of all, they don’t cost much, so you can help the environment and save yourself some money at the same time.
Check out our buying guide to learn all you need to know about choosing the best reusable drinking straws. We’ve included a few of our favorite options, too, such as our top pick from Yihong. These straws are made from sturdy, food-grade stainless steel and come with brushes to make cleaning them as easy as possible.
Considerations when choosing reusable drinking strawsMaterialsReusable drinking straws can be made from a few different materials that hold up well to repeated use and cleaning. The following are the most common options:
Stainless steel is highly durable, dishwasher-safe, and rust-resistant. Stainless steel straws aren’t the best option for drinking hot beverages, though, because the metal conducts heat so well.Silicone is another extremely durable material that can last for years. It’s also dishwasher safe, doesn’t change the taste of beverages, and can be used with both hot and cold beverages.Plastic is dishwasher-safe and pretty durable, though it can show wear and tear from your teeth over time. It’s important to choose BPA-free reusable plastic straws, but most are. They’re not the best option for hot beverages, though.Bamboo is a highly durable natural material. Bamboo reusable straws can sometimes give beverages an earthy flavor, though, and they’re not dishwasher-safe. They work well for both hot and cold beverages.Glass isn’t as durable as other straw materials because it’s prone to breaking and cracking. Glass reusable straws are dishwasher safe, though, and won’t change the taste of your favorite beverages. Tempered glass straws are a good option for both hot and cold beverages.SizesAs with disposable plastic straws, reusable drinking straws come in a few different lengths. Most range from eight to 10.5 inches in length, but you can find longer straws for larger cups.
Straws are also available in different diameters, which can be important if you’re drinking thicker beverages, such as smoothies or milkshakes. You can usually find straws that range from 0.24 to 0.30 inches in inner diameter.
FeaturesShapePlenty of reusable straws feature a straight design that can work well for most beverages. You can also find some reusable drinking straws that are curved to mimic the design of bendable plastic straws. Some people find these curved straws more comfortable to drink from, but if you’re unsure which shape you prefer, opt for a set that includes both straight and curved straws.
QuantityReusable straws are nearly always sold in sets that include more than one straw. You can find small sets that feature as few as three or four, as well as large sets that contain 10 or more. It’s a good idea to have extra straws on hand in case some require cleaning, and if you have a large family, you’ll definitely prefer a larger set.
Silicone tipsReusable drinking straws that are made from harder materials like stainless steel or glass often feature silicone tips on the end. The silicone is softer and more comfortable against the lips and can also protect your teeth from accidental damage.
Cleaning brushesCleaning reusable drinking straws by hand can be a challenge, which is why many manufacturers include cleaning brushes with their straw sets. These brushes are narrow enough to easily fit inside the straws, so you can be sure to remove any residue inside.
CaseMany restaurants still provide disposable plastic drinking straws. If you want to bring your reusable straws on the go, choose a set with a carrying case. The case may be a slim box or a bag that helps keep your straws clean in your purse, backpack or another bag.
PriceReusable drinking straws cost between $5 and $30. A pack of high-quality stainless steel, glass, or bamboo straws typically costs between $8 and $14.
FAQQ. What type of reusable straws are easiest to clean?A. If cleanup is a concern, opt for reusable drinking straws that are dishwasher-safe. You can throw stainless steel, glass, silicone, and plastic straws right in the dishwasher with your glasses and plates.
Q. Which types of reusable straws are best for drinking coffee or other hot beverages?A. You should choose reusable drinking straws that are made from a material that doesn’t conduct heat well. Silicone and tempered glass are usually your best options.
