49ers owner declares Shanahan, Lynch ‘not going anywhere’
The duo behind the 49ers’ two Super Bowl appearances over the past six years — coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch — will return next season after the team’s losing record in 2024, according to owner Jed York.
“They’re not going anywhere,” York told the San Francisco Standard on Monday afternoon.
The 49ers are 6-10 and eliminated from playoff contention, just one year after appearing in the Super Bowl and losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.
In his conference call with reporters on Tuesday morning, Shanahan was asked if York’s comments make him feel more confident about his future with the team.
“Not really,” Shanahan said. “I’ve got a good relationship with Jed and we speak almost every day. Hearing stuff in the media doesn’t really change stuff for me, it’s more what I have between him and myself.”
That relationship has always been consistent?
“Definitely,” Shanahan added. “Jed is very easy to talk to. We’ve known each other for nine years and feel very fortunate for how he is through the good and the bad and the communication never really changes regardless of what’s going on.”
On Monday, ESPN reported that the 49ers were not interested in trading Shanahan, who has led the team to four NFC championship game appearances and two Super Bowl berths.
A few hours after York’s statement and mere minutes after the 49ers lost to the Detroit Lions 40-34 on Monday night, Shanahan was already looking to the future and his ninth season in charge.
“It could’ve gone worse going through this today, and I expect us to learn a lot from going through this stuff and I expect for this to make us a better team next year,” Shanahan said. “When this season is over, I can’t wait to get started figuring out how to do that.”
During an interview with KNBR on Friday, Lynch said that the front office is already beginning to set its sights on next season.
“We have been looking at the root causes. We’ll fix it,” Lynch said. “We’ve got a lot of great players and a lot of great people that we want to be a part of the solution moving forward, and we’ll go find the other parts of our team to get us back to where we belong. And that’s competing for championships, and I’m confident in our plan to do that.”

Brock Purdy’s bruised elbow not long-term issue after 49ers’ home-finale fiasco
SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy’s bruised throwing elbow will keep him out of the 49ers’ season finale Sunday at Arizona, but coach Kyle Shanahan relayed positive word Tuesday about his quarterback’s long-term prognosis.
“He’s most likely going to miss this week but no long-term issues. The UCL is fine,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday morning on a conference call with reporters.
Purdy, two years removed from an ulnar collateral ligament repair, sustained what Shanahan termed Tuesday as an elbow contusion with nerve inflammation, which sent a darting pain through his arm in the 49ers’ 40-34 loss Monday night in their home finale against the Detroit Lions.
“I’m relieved but I wasn’t too worried about it with the information we had on it last night,” Shanahan added. “Good to hear the same thing today.”
Shanahan said he will decide later Tuesday whether to start Josh Dobbs or Brandon Allen in Sunday’s closing act at Arizona. Dobbs relieved Purdy and ran for a last-minute touchdown Monday night. Allen played in the 49ers’ Nov. 24 loss at Green Bay when Purdy was sidelined with a right-shoulder injury.
Two years ago, Purdy tore the UCL in his right elbow when struck on a first-series sack in the NFC Championship Game loss at Philadelphia. He underwent an InternalBrace repair in March 2023, resumed throwing three months later, and went on to pass for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, en route to his first Pro Bowl honors and a fourth-place finish in NFL MVP voting.
Purdy was injured Monday on a sack with 1:36 remaining, initially dropped by safety Brian Branch for a 7-yard loss before 300-pound defensive lineman Pat O’Connor’s right hand and facemask piled into Purdy’s elbow. Purdy headed to the sideline, winced as the 49ers’ medical staff inspected him, and after exchanging light handshakes postgame with opponents at midfield, he tucked his right hand into his hip-pocket warmer for an awkward-looking jog into the locker room.
Last December, Purdy experienced a nerve-related stinger to his left shoulder and briefly left the 49ers’ NFC West-clinching win at Arizona, and he was forced to leave their next game with a similar injury in the 2024 Christmas night loss to Baltimore.
Next week, at season’s end, Purdy becomes eligible for a contract extension, three years into his bargain-basement rookie deal. With multiple quarterbacks making over $50 million annually, that figured to be a starting spot in Purdy’s negotiations, and the 49ers’ brass has indicated throughout the past year they planned to reward Purdy for his breakout stature after being drafted with the 262nd and final pick in 2022 out of Iowa State.
Purdy passed for a career-high 337 yards on Monday night, his fourth game this season over 300 yards and the ninth of his career which ranks as the fourth-most in 49ers history.
A pair of second-half interceptions crushed the 49ers’ comeback hopes, and it sent Purdy to his 13th loss in his past 27 regular-season starts.
Shanahan had yet to speak to Purdy on Tuesday before speaking with reporters.
“He’s handled this year head-on. He hasn’t ran from anything,” Shanahan said. “He attacks everything and works as hard as he can. He comes in Mondays and Tuesdays and faces the truth of everything and tries to get better every week. Last night he was disappointed in the turnovers, disappointed in the loss. Kind of how he always is.”
Purdy, assuming his season is done, passed for 3,864 yards, completed 300-of-455 passes (65.9%), threw 12 touchdown passes, got intercepted 12 times, lost three fumbles, was sacked 31 times, and posted a 96.1 passer rating. He ran for a career-high 323 yards on 66 carries, with five touchdowns matching the most by a 49ers quarterback since Colin Kaepernick in 2012.
Purdy ranks fourth in 49ers’ history in terms of games with three-touchdown passes (nine) and 350-plus yards (four).
Monday marked was his 15th career game with two-or-more passing touchdowns and a passer rating of at least 115.0, and no other quarterback in NFL history has that many such games through three seasons.

Tight end George Kittle and defensive end Nick Bosa were NFC leaders in fan voting for the Pro Bowl Games. Official rosters will be unveiled Thursday.
Not among fans’ top-10 choices at their respective positions were left tackle Trent Williams (an 11-time Pro Bowler) and Purdy, last year’s leading vote getter among fans. The 49ers had nine players earn Pro Bowl accolades last season.
Kittle placed third overall in fan voting behind the Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce and the Las Vegas Raiders’ Brock Bowers, a Napa native. Bosa ranked sixth among all defensive ends.
Fullback Kyle Juszczyk, an eight-time Pro Bowler, placed second in fan voting behind Minnesota’s C.J. Ham, and Fred Warner was sixth among all linebackers.
NOTES
— Jake Moody will remain the 49ers’ kicker for their season finale despite missing three kicks Monday night, including field-goal tries of 51 and 58 yards before a missed point-after attempt in the final minute.
— Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was officially placed on injured reserve. His comeback from Achilles tear lasted 34 snaps and not quite four quarters over two games. He did not play Monday night.
— Defensive end Leonard Floyd (shoulder) and linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (calf) are day-to-day with the only other injuries reported from Monday night.
— A day after owner Jed York expressed votes of confidence in Shanahan and general manager John York, Shanahan downplayed any speculation of his job security after eight seasons.
” I’ve got a good relationship with Jed and we speak almost every day. Hearing stuff in the media doesn’t really change stuff for me,” Shanahan said. “It’s more what I have between him and myself.”
York, in a pregame chat with Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard, said Shanahan and York “are not going anywhere.” Shanahan said of their relationship: “Jed is very easy to talk to. We’ve known each other for nine years and feel very fortunate for how he is through the good and the bad and the communication never really changes regardless of what’s going on.”
Prep Stories of the Year for 2024: North Salinas’ Adams etches names in county record books
SALINAS>>Her arrival as a track and field phenom last spring as a freshman was not unexpected. Clara Adams had been making a name for herself on the Junior Olympic circuit as a youth.
Yet, the North Salinas High sprinter blazed a trail not seen since Sani Roseby, arguably the greatest track and field female athlete ever to come from Monterey County.
Adams brought the future to the forefront last spring at North Salinas, breaking Roseby’s 400-meter record at the state trails with a time of 54.46 seconds.
“Me and my dad do reflect on what I’ve done,” Adams said. “We just talk about what’s going to come next and what we’re going to do from there. But I definitely look back on it.”

Adams took track and field fanatics on a ride all spring as her times in the 200- and 400-meter sprints kept plunging, earning a fourth-place finish at the state championships.
Breaking school records was just a tune-up to what she had in store after winning league titles in both the 200 and 400 meters at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division finals.
Blessed with a lengthy stride with a 5-foot-8 frame and an off-season of building stamina and strength in the weight room, Adams was set for peak performances last May.
The 15-year-old stunned a deep field in the 200 meters at the Central Coast Section finals — 80 minutes after running the 400 –becoming the first ever North Salinas girls’ athlete to bring home a CCS track and field title.
Showing off her endurance, Adams didn’t catch the field until the straight away, then began to pull away over the last 80 meters in an upset.
“My 400 training played a role in those final 80 meters,” Adams said. “The 200 is so fun to run. But I’m more successful in the 400. I train for both. I really enjoy both races.”
Adams, who finished second in the 400 at the CCS finals, became the first ever North Salinas female for the school to qualify for the state meet in 27 years.
The CCS finals were just a prelim to the state championships, where Adams blistered the track in the 400 trials to a country record to put herself in a good lane for the finals 24 hours later.
Adams was fearless all season in blistering the first 100 meters of the 400, then relying on her strength to carry over the final 150 meters.
The magnitude of the event wasn’t too much for Adams, who has been challenging herself since she was 11, often running in Junior Olympic events against older girls.
“State felt like a regular meet,” Adams said. “I was definitely nervous. But I knew what had to get done and I did it.”

Returning the following day for the finals, Adams became the only athlete from the county to podium after placing fourth overall in the 400.
“I felt really prepared,” Adams said. “I felt confident going in. When the gun went off, the nerves went away. I was running with the pack at 250 meters. I still felt strong.”
The milestone for Adams, North Salinas and the county marked the first time a female sprinter from the area had podiumed since Roseby won the 100 during her senior season in 2000.
In a sport with no divisions to break up athletes or teams to create multiple champions, Adams’ heroics were arguably the most impressive feat of any athlete from any sport in 2024.
“I know I have room for growth,” Adams said. “I haven’t fully peaked. As I get older, it just gets better each year.”

As a means to keep that fire burning, Adams stepped away from the track in the fall and played volleyball for North Salinas. It’s not expectations as much as excitement that fuels the sophomore.
“Volleyball was a nice break,” Adams said. “Now it’s time to get back on the track. I’d love to get sub 54 (seconds) in the 400. And make the state finals in both the 200 and 400.”
Barbara Intermill, On Nutrition: Brews with benefits
I visited our local library last week and was surprised to see a cheerful sign at the door that invited patrons in for “Books and Brews!” Not brews that may first come to mind. These were various teas and coffees lovingly prepared by librarians (another reason why I love our small town) for those of us who like to nestle with our computers in quiet corners.
When I asked for a chai spice tea sweetened with a small stick of honey (25 cents extra) the young lady behind the desk asked, “Are you a tea drinker?”
“Yes, but I love coffee as well,” I admitted.
“Me, too!” she continued. “But this time of year, I really enjoy a nice cup of tea.”
Same. Especially when sniffles or sneezing come my way, I gravitate toward tea over my beloved coffee. And probably for good reason.
According to the Global Tea Institute at the University of California Davis, before tea was a common beverage, it was considered a medicine. In fact, these experts say that “tea plays a healthy role in maintaining the human body, mind and spirit.”
A 2020 article in Frontiers in Immunology credits various substances in green and black teas (same plant, just different processing methods) with their role in boosting the body’s ability to ward off diseases and infections. Those include nutrients like zinc, copper and manganese as well as “bioactive” ingredients that enhance the immune system.
And the relaxation we feel when sipping tea? It’s real, due to substances such as theanine, an amino acid that can have a calming effect on the body and mind.
Coffee, too, has real benefits, according to a recent study published in Nature Biology involving almost 23,000 participants from the U.S and the U.K. These scientists tracked how three different levels of coffee drinking — less than 3 cups a year, up to 3 cups a day or more than 3 cups a day — correlated with the type or amount of certain bacteria in the gut (home to our microbiome).
They found that coffee intake stimulated the growth of 100-plus types of good bugs in the gut — especially one called L. asaccharolyticus. This beneficial gut bacteria was up to eight times more abundant in high coffee drinkers compared to those who rarely drank coffee.
And good news, these effects held true with both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees. These researchers attributed this change in microbes to the presence of polyphenols —antioxidant substances known for their role in stimulating a healthier mix of good gut bacteria.
So, take some time, if you choose, for a nice cup of tea or coffee. It just might bring you some peace and good will.

Barry Dolowich, Tax Tips: Deduction for sales taxes
Question: I recently purchased a new airplane and had to pay $22,000 in sales tax. Will I be able to deduct the sales tax on my individual income tax return as a federal itemized deduction?
Answer: Sales tax was a deduction until the 1986 Tax Reform Act “simplified” the tax system. The 2004 Jumpstart Our Business Strength (JOBS) Act, enacted Oct. 22, 2004, provided that at the election of the taxpayer, state and local general sales tax may be taken as an itemized deduction in lieu of the itemized deduction provided under present law for state and local income taxes. Taxpayers have two methods with respect to calculating the sales tax deduction amount. Taxpayers are able to deduct the total amount of general state and local sales taxes paid by accumulating receipts showing general sales taxes paid. Alternatively, taxpayers may use tables created by the Internal Revenue Service. These tables are based on average consumption by taxpayers on a state-by-state basis taking into account filing status, number of dependents, adjusted gross income and rates of state and local general sales taxation.
Taxpayers who use the Internal Revenue Service tables may, in addition to the table amounts, deduct eligible general sales taxes paid for the purchase of motor vehicles, boats, aircraft, homes, and materials to build a home. However, if the state and local income tax deduction calculates higher than your sales tax deduction, you will be better off taking the higher state and local tax deduction amount.
There are many other expensive items taxes on which cannot be added to the sales tax table amount. These include expensive home furnishings such as furniture, appliances and high-end audio or video components. A taxpayer who purchases such items should keep receipts for all sales taxes. Also, an individual who is planning to pay for a large party on which sales taxes are paid, such as a catered wedding reception should save receipts to preserve the possibility of achieving a larger actual deduction than would be achieved under the tables.
On Dec. 15, 2015, the state and local general sales tax deduction was made permanent with the signing of the PATH Act.
Please note that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, effective Jan. 1, 2018, now limits your federal deduction for state and local taxes (including sales tax) to $10,000 per year through 2025 (known as the State and Local Tax, or SALT, limitation). Therefore, the benefit of the sales tax deduction, if any, is dependent upon the amount of other qualified tax deductions available to you.

No bodies found in water following two reports of missing individuals
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office received a report about what appeared to be a human body floating in the water about 4 miles off the coastline of Marina State Beach Sunday.
The report was made by the crew of a local whale watch tour boat at about 11 a.m.
The Coast Guard responded to the scene, but was unable to locate a body.
On Dec. 23 the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a male that had been swept off a rock along 17 Mile Drive near Point Joe after being hit by a sneaker wave. Efforts were made by CalFire, California State Parks and the Coast Guard to locate him, but he was not found.
About two hours earlier, the Marina Police Department got a report of a second person who was swept out to sea by large waves, that individual was also not located.
“Weather conditions on the day of these incidents as well as on the following days, were not suitable for safe searches of these two missing individuals,” reads a press statement from police.
Active search efforts by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office have been suspended.
Glide into winter with the best men’s ice skates
When the weather begins to cool, our thoughts turn to activities like making snowmen, sledding and, of course, ice skating. An excellent way to stay in shape and strengthen your core, ice skating can be a great deal of fun once you learn how to stay on your feet.
But whether you’re playing pickup hockey or gliding around on the ice with your family, it’s best to wear quality ice skates. A top pick is the Bauer Senior Vapor X3.5 Hockey Skates, which skaters love for their comfort and enhanced mobility.
What to know before you buy men’s ice skatesFigure skates vs. hockey skatesA distinction between figure and hockey skates is notable in their build and performance. Figure skates have a longer blade with a toe pick at the front that’s used to execute figure skating moves with precision. Hockey skates have thinner blades curved at the front and rear to increase speed and agility.
The parts of an ice skateIce skates consist of two parts:
The boot should be rigid and provide enough protection from accidental falling or tripping. Hockey skates have a robust build that helps protect against pucks, sticks, and other players’ skates. The blade is usually durable carbon steel and often has a grooved bottom. It’s usually 4 millimeters thick but can be more pronounced depending on skill level and preference.SizeIt’s essential to wear the correct size skate to feel comfortable and prevent injury. Skates that are too big will feel awkward, and you may find yourself often falling, while those that are too small can constrict your feet and cause discomfort, pain or swelling. Unlike shoes, many skates tend to run large, so if you’re unsure what size to purchase it’s best to measure your foot length and consult a sizing chart.
What to look for in quality men’s ice skatesMaterialYou want to ensure the boot is made of authentic leather or synthetic material for high-quality skates. Leather skates are more durable than synthetic skates, but they’re more expensive and take longer to break in. Synthetic skates are generally more comfortable and ready to go right out of the box, but they don’t offer the same longevity as leather skates.
Comfortable interiorEven if skates are designed to provide elite performance, they won’t be worth anything if you don’t find them comfortable. In addition to wearing the correct size, the boot’s interior should be lined with soft microfiber material and the footbed should be packed with plenty of cushioning. The tongue should also have sufficient padding to give your ankle the support it needs.
Moisture managementYou may not feel while skating in cold weather, but your feet and ankles will sweat significantly. A buildup of moisture in your boots and socks can be uncomfortable and, if you’re an ice skater or hockey player who takes your craft seriously, it may noticeably affect your performance. For those reasons, it’s crucial to look for skates with moisture-wicking fabric along the tongue and near the ankles to help you stay dry.
How much you can expect to spend on men’s ice skatesIf you’re looking for recreational ice skates, you can find a quality pair between $50 and $120. However, if you’re a hockey player who wants high-performance skates, you can expect to spend up to $300.
Men’s ice skates FAQWhat kind of skates should I look for as a casual skater?A. Assuming you don’t plan on playing hockey with your skates, you should look for a pair made with flexible materials that have plenty of padding in the boot.
How long does it take to break in a new pair of skates?A. It depends on how often you use them and what materials they’re made with. Skates with boots made from rigid materials will take longer to break in, but on average, they should be in optimal condition within one to two months of regular use.

Jared Goff, the NFL’s castoff quarterback, returns home to Bay Area, cements career revival by dominating 49ers
SANTA CLARA — As the Detroit Lions wrapped up their 40-34 win over the 49ers on Monday Night Football, an unmistakable chant rang out at Levi’s Stadium.
“JA-RED GOFF! JA-RED GOFF!”
It wasn’t so long ago that Goff couldn’t solve the 49ers. Entering Monday, he hadn’t beaten San Francisco since 2018, losing six consecutive games as a member of the Los Angeles Rams and Lions.
After Monday night, those memories are long gone. Goff got his revenge in Santa Clara, completing 26 of 34 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions took down the 49ers thanks to a prolific offensive display by their signal-caller.
“Pretty surreal,” said Goff, a Novato native who prepped at Marin Catholic and played college football at Cal. “Our fans have been unbelievable all year at road games. It’s truly remarkable what they’ve done. It’s loud on third down sometimes for the offense. It’s pretty cool. But yeah, it’s very cool for me, being home in front of my family and friends. Having an experience like that is cool.”

Not so long ago, Goff was the red-headed quarterback stepchild of the NFL, rejected by Sean McVay in Los Angeles in favor of veteran Matthew Stafford and banished to Detroit as damaged goods. Since then, he’s authored a stunning plot twist in his story.
Goff is now indisputably one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and one of the clearest reasons the Lions are Super Bowl contenders.
“I know he had a lot of friends and family here,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “So I know in that regard, that meant something. There was a lot that meant something to him. To be able to get a win out here when we didn’t last year. And then the previous history with the Rams.
“But this is a different Jared Goff now. He’s different. This guy has developed and matured, and he’s just stepping into his prime, and he continues to get better and better. He’s playing at an ultimate level right now. Find me a quarterback that’s playing better than him in this league right now. I’d love to see it.”

Just last season, Goff and the Lions came to the Bay Area for the NFC championship game and blew a 24-7 halftime lead, ultimately losing 34-31.
This time, there was no doubt who the better team was, nor which team can be certain it has a franchise quarterback on the rise.
“I feel good,” Goff said. “I feel like we’re all playing at an elevated level right now on offense. The last handful of weeks, even the Buffalo game that we lost, we scored a lot of points. We’ve been playing well on offense for quite some time.”
When Goff left Los Angeles, he was a two-time Pro Bowler in decline who had fallen out of favor with his coach. Now, Campbell – and the Lions fans who made the trip to Santa Clara – can’t get enough of him.

“The team we were playing, in San Francisco, this is what ended our season last year,” Goff said. “And there are a lot of guys on this team that were there last year. We wanted to get one back on them, even though in a lot of ways it was meaningless for them and meaningless for us. But they were prideful out there too. They were trying to beat us as well, and it was a fun game.”
Goff didn’t know exactly how many family and friends he had in the stands. But they were surely among the thousands chanting his name as the Lions’ win came into focus at the end of the game.
“A lot,” Goff said of how many guests he brought. “I have no idea how many, but a lot.”

On top of the 49ers 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy re-injured his throwing elbow on Monday night.

The 49ers (6-10) clinched last place in the NFC West courtesy of this sixth loss in seven games.
This 49ers’ home finale opened with so much of what The Faithful restlessly sought this season: Purdy in MVP-caliber form; Deebo Samuel scoring a touchdown; George Kittle bulldozing defenders; first-round pick Ricky Pearsall making grabs on a breakout night (eight catches, 141 yards); and, Nick Bosa harassing the opposing quarterback.
Alas, the 49ers could not keep pace with the Lions, nor rally past them like last matchup, when they overcame a 24-7 halftime deficit and won the NFC crown 34-31.
