Throwback Thursday: Art from Not Gods But Monsters

A long time ago, long before the first line of the current Not Gods But Monsters was penned, the project was known as Fantasma. While there were a lot of similar elements and themes shared between the two tales, there is a number of items that never made the final cut into the final release. As with the current books, I did artwork for the original tale, including a number of character illustrations.

Below is posted a pair of original pieces (from the JBB Instagram account) and a comparison o...

The Art of TKK: Callie and Ceosan

Part two of the series for The Killing Kind. This pairing features a younger Callie Evans (around 14 during this story) and the Moa’rehnzan despot, Carolus Res Ceosan.

Fun fact: Much like the blue highlights found in the illustrations for A Prison of Flesh, the green color was supposed to tie in with color scheme of the book cover. The change to bronze was made well after this series was completed.

For part one, click here.

" Hair that had been curly and blonde was now knotted and caked with...

The Art of TKK: O'mas and Zonda

As with the earlier entries in the series, I worked up a series of character sketches on prominent characters in The Killing Kind. Much like A Prison of Flesh, this series is a set of four, with a limited color palette. Just like the blue used for APOF, this set features green as a major identifying color. Below are the first two in the series.

"The stubble along his jawline proved poor buffer to the sharp cold that dulled the feeling in his bare skin. As he scratched the thinning patch of ha...

The Art of TKK: Cover Painting

For those familiar with earlier books in the Realm of Tah’afajien series, the cover for Book 3 falls in line, layout-wise, with Book 2, where the image is features a major character and a prominent location in the story. This time around, the focus fell on Marianus O’mas and the Moa’rehnzan capital city of Gran’rehnza.

In truth, the painting did not end up how I originally intended it to be. As you can tell by the unfinished painting (see image on right), I originally considered illustrating...

Book 3 is a Prequel?

The Killing Kind, the third book in the Realm of Tah’afajien series is a prequel that happens over a decade before the beginning of Not Gods But Monsters. Book 3 provides context, not only for what transpires during books 1 and 2 but for the series' eventual endgame. Think of it like The Phantom Menace (but, you know, better (hopefully)). Or like when they decided to film the Hobbit movies well after the Lord of the Rings.

It has always been my intent that the series was to be arranged as t...
