Q+A with Kate Evangelista + Taste Excerpt + Giveaway

Please welcome today's paranormal guest author Kate Evangelista.  Kate is the author of Taste.

Keep reading for a sneak peek excerpt from Taste and a chance to win an ebook copy of Taste by Kate Evangelista.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Kate:
I started writing in high school. A few short stories here and there with bad grammar and horrible formatting, but my classmates didn't seem to care. *laughs* I wrote off and on since then and only began seeing writing as my career of choice a couple of years ago. Best decision I ever made.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Kate:
I've always been fascinated with the paranormal. I love watching scary movies even if they give me nightmares. Then I started reading paranormal romances. Who would have thought falling in love with a werewolf or vampire would be so hot? So now, paranormal isn't a scary place for me anymore. It's a place with potentially hot make out sessions.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Kate:
I love this question. I'd want to be a werewolf. Always have and always will. I think weres kick-ass. And to be a female were, especially an Alpha female...that would be so hot.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Kate:
I think Taste brings with it a great deal of the unexpected. At least, that's what I've been hearing from those who've read the book already. I'm never one to judge my books. I always leave that to my readers. *smiles*

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Kate:
For Luka, I've always had Alex Pettyfer in mind. As for Phoenix, I'm drawing a blank, but one reader said she wanted Zoey Deschanel...although she might be too old to play a teen. As for Demitri, I'm drawing a big blank too. I remember seeing this ad for aftershave once with a model who I thought looked like Demitri. So, like I said, Luka I know for sure, the rest I leave to the casting director.

Taste by Kate Evangelista

At Barinkoff Academy, there's only one rule: no students on campus after curfew. Phoenix McKay soon finds out why when she is left behind at sunset. A group calling themselves night students threaten to taste her flesh until she is saved by a mysterious, alluring boy. With his pale skin, dark eyes, and mesmerizing voice, Demitri is both irresistible and impenetrable. He warns her to stay away from his dangerous world of flesh eaters. Unfortunately, the gorgeous and playful Luka has other plans.

When Phoenix is caught between her physical and her emotional attraction, she becomes the keeper of a deadly secret that will rock the foundations of an ancient civilization living beneath Barinkoff Academy. Phoenix doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old feud.

Excerpt from Taste for From the Shadows readers:

I sat up and followed Calixta’s gaze upward. I rubbed my eyes. I didn’t know what I was seeing at first. A statue? My brain refused to snap together coherent thoughts.  I didn’t realize I’d fallen so close to one of the garden benches until I stared up at the boy that sat on one. He was strikingly beautiful. His tumble of blonde hair curled just above his sculpted cheekbones. He wore a silk shirt and a loosened cravat, like he’d become bored while dressing and decided to leave himself in disarray. His ivory skin and frozen position was what had me mistaking him for something carved from marble by Michelangelo. Then he sighed—a lonely, breathy proof of life. If I had to imagine what Lucifer looked like before he fell from heaven, the boy on the bench would certainly fulfill that image. My brain told me I had to look away, but I couldn’t. “Luka,” Calixta said again, her voice unsure, almost nervous. It no longer contained the steel and bite she had threatened me with, which made me wonder who the boy was.He leaned on his hands and crossed his legs, all the while keeping his eyes fixed on the night sky. His movements spoke of elegance and control. I’d encountered many people with breeding before, but his took on the air of arrogance and self-assuredness of someone used to getting what he wanted when he wanted it.I only realized I’d been holding my breath when my lungs protested. I exhaled. My heart sputtered and restarted with a vengeance. Luka tore his gaze away from the stars and settled it on me. I’d expected pitch-black irises, like the other Night Students, but blue ice stared back at me. “Human,” he whispered. He reached out, and with a finger, followed an invisible trail down my cheek. I stiffened. His touch, cooler than Demitri’s, caused warm sparks to blossom on my face. He lifted his finger to his lips and licked its tip. He might as well have licked me from the way my body shivered. Luka’s curious gaze held mine. “Leave us,” he said, but not to me.“But—” Calixta protested like a spoiled child. He spoke in a language I hadn’t heard before, remaining calm yet firm. The words had a rolling cadence I couldn’t quite follow, like rumbling thunder in the distance. They contained a harsh sensuality. The consonants were hard and the vowels were long and lilting. Footsteps retreated behind me.Luka reached out again. It took me a minute to realize he wanted to help me up. I hesitated. He smiled. I smiled back timidly and took his hand, completely dazzled. Even with my uniform soaked from melted snow, I didn’t feel cold—all my attention was on him and the way his callused hand felt on mine. Without moving much from his seated position, he helped me stand.“What’s your name?” he asked. He had a voice like a familiar lullaby. It filled my heart to the brim with comfort.I swallowed and tried to stop gawking. “Phoenix.” “The bird that rose from the ashes.” Luka bent his head and kissed the back of my hand. “It’s a pleasure meeting you.”My cheeks warmed. My head reeled, not knowing what to think. I couldn’t understand why I felt drawn to him. And the strange connection frightened me.From behind, someone gripped my arms and yanked me away before I could sort out the feelings Luka inspired in me. I found myself behind a towering figure yet again. Recognizing the blue-black silk for hair tied at the nape, relief washed over me. Calixta hadn’t come back to finish me off. Demitri’s large hand wrapped around my wrist. Unlike the night before, no calm existed in his demeanor. He trembled like a junky in need of a fix. The coiled power in his tense muscles vibrated into me. “What are you doing here?” Demitri asked.I didn’t know he’d spoken to me until I saw his expressionless profile. I sighed. “Phoenix.”I flinched. The ruthless way he said my name punched all the air out of me. “You owe me answers,” I said with as much bravado as I could muster. “I owe you nothing.” He glared. “In fact, you owe me your life.” “I don’t think so.” Ignoring my indignation, he faced Luka, who’d remained seated on the bench during my exchange with Demitri. “Why is she with you, Luka?” “I wasn’t going to taste her, if that’s what you’re implying,” Luka said. “Although, she is simply delicious. I wouldn’t mind if you left us alone.”There it was again. Taste. The word that kept coming up between these Night Students and I was connected to it in an increasingly uncomfortable way. To taste meant to sample, but what? My flesh? They had to be joking because the alternative wasn’t funny.“The sins of the father …” Demitri left his sentence unfinished.Luka’s smile shifted into a snarl. “Obey my command.” His chin lifted. “Kneel.”Demitri’s stance went rigid. His grip tightened around my wrist.Okay, weird just got weirder. Why would Luka want Demitri to kneel before him? I thought back to Eli and the others bowing to Demitri when he questioned them, but they didn’t kneel. Seriously? Were they all living on a different planet or something?“Kneel.” Luka’s detestable smirk made his features sinister rather than angelic. The real Lucifer: a fallen angel. Without letting go of my wrist, Demitri knelt down on one knee and bowed his head, his free hand flat at the center of his chest. “Your command has been obeyed,” he said formally.Luka nodded once. Demitri stood up and pulled me toward the school without telling me where we were going. Not having the time to thank Luka for saving me from Calixta, I risked a glance back. Luka smiled at me. His smile spoke of whispers, secrets, and promises to be shared on a later date.

Q+A with Jess Haines + Stalking the Others Tour Giveaway

Please welcome today's paranormal guest author Jess Haines.  Jess is the author of Hunted by the Others, Taken by the Others, Deceived by the Others, and Stalking the Others.

Keep reading for a chance to win one of 15 copies of Stalking the Others by Jess Haines!

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Jess:
I've been writing since junior high school. From the time I was a little kid, I was a voracious reader, but the idea that I could try my hand at the writing biz didn't strike me until someone asked me to help with the school newspaper.  It all went downhill from there. I've never looked back!

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Jess:
I've always loved the fantastical.  Dragons, especially.  When I got a bit older, and started reading every fantasy novel I could get my hands on, one of my friends in school introduced me to Dungeons & Dragons.  From there, I moved on to Vampire: the Masquerade.  VtM fueled an obsession with all things fanged, clawed, and/or bite-y from that point forward.  While I got my start writing for the school newspaper, I really honed my writing skills throughout my high school years roleplaying fantasy characters online.

Once I discovered it was a "thing"--a la Jim Butcher and Laurell K. Hamilton--I knew I wanted to try my hand at writing stuff like that myself.  It took me a while to feel confident enough to submit any of my work anywhere, but, as you can see, that has worked out just fine for me in the end.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Jess:
I would be a dragon. Treasure, long lifespan, the ability to fly, magic, and the biggest kid on the block.  Need I say more?

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Jess:
This is the fourth book in my series, so let me start with a short recap of the other three:

Book 1 – HUNTED BY THE OTHERS: Shiarra Waynest, a private investigator, is blackmailed into retrieving an artifact from a vampire. The problem? As a human, she doesn’t stand a chance against the Others.

Book 2 – TAKEN BY THE OTHERS: With the artifact destroyed, Shia believes her dealings with the supernaturals in town are over—but the vampires, werewolves, and monster hunters in town believe otherwise…

Book 3 – DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS: Determined to get away from the troubles plaguing her in the city, Shia goes on a vacation with her werewolf boyfriend—along with his entire pack—in the Catskills.

Book 4 – STALKING THE OTHERS: After the events and subsequent betrayal Shia experienced in the last book, she’s done being pushed around.  If she’s going down, she’ll take out as many of her enemies as she can—and hope that in the process, she keeps whatever humanity she has left...

So, in this book, Shiarra is in a very bad place.  She’s lost her family, her boyfriend, and probably her business and license as a private investigator—and some might feel she’s also lost her marbles.  She’s ready to take on the world, and get some payback from the people who turned her life into her version of a living hell.

It’s not recommended as a starting point—this is the continuation that picks up right where my last book, DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS, left off.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Jess:
In the entirely theoretical HUNTED BY THE OTHERS: THE MOVIE, I think the cast would be as follows (mostly because they meet my mental visual for these characters, but in some cases, like RDJ, they clearly have the skill to pull off the attitude, too):

Shiarra Waynest -- Dina Meyer, Alicia Witt, or Evan Rachel Wood

Sara Halloway -- Katee Sackhoff

Alec Royce -- Paul Rudd or Robert Downey, Jr.

Chaz -- Chad Michael Murray

Arnold -- Charlie Korsmo or Alan Tudyk

Stalking the Others (H+W Investigations, #4) by Jess Haines.

Vampires, werewolves, mages–the Others are very real, and wreaking havoc in Shiarra Waynest’s life. But now, she’s returning the favor…

Once, she was one of the good guys–or as close as a New York P.I. can get. Then Shiarra Waynest was drawn into the world of the Others. Every faction has its own loyalties and agenda. And Shia’s recent betrayal by her ex-boyfriend means that she may be on the verge of becoming a rogue werewolf at the next full moon.

Of course, with all the threats against her, Shia’s not sure she’ll live long enough to find out. The enigmatic vampire Royce wants her back in his clutches, as do two powerful werewolf packs, along with the police. Instead of going into hiding, Shia is enlisting the aid of her enchanted hunter’s belt and every dirty P.I. trick she knows. If she’s going down, she’ll take out as many of her enemies as she can–and hope that in the process, she keeps whatever humanity she has left…

Lauren Hammond Guest Post + Insanity Giveaway

Please welcome today's guest author Lauren Hammond.  Lauren is the author of Famished, If I Can't Have You, He Loves Me...He Loves You Not, Love Sucks, The Aloria Chronicles, Asphodel (The Underworld Trilogy), A Whisper To A Scream (The Sociopath Diaries), Pride, and Insanity.

Five Unknown Facts about Lauren

First of all, thank you so much for having me today! Second, what a fun topic!

Five things you don’t know about me…

1.    I have two tattoos; a snowflake on my back and the word family in polish on my wrist in my grandfathers’ handwriting.

2.    Sometimes I am too honest and people get offended. (I know you can’t always tell it like you see it. It’s something I’m working on, lol.)

3.    When I was three I told my mom I wanted to be a gas station attendant. (Ahhh, the goals and career choices of a toddler.)

4.    I can’t stand bullying. (More people should learn to appreciate and respect every individual for who they are. Inside and out.)

5.    I am a history freak. It fascinates me. Every time I take a vacation I have an itinerary planned for all the historical landmarks. (I also love to travel and have a goal to see every historical landmark in the world. I know it’s a longshot, but hey, I’m willing to try.)

Insanity (Asylum, #1) by Lauren Hammond.

Sometimes love...can drive you crazy.

Adelaide Carmichael and Damien Allen couldn't be more opposite. Adelaide's mother abandoned her when she was ten years old, leaving her to be raised by her abusive and alcoholic father. Damien on the other hand came from a wealthy family, was a local celebrity, and seemed to have a bright future ahead of him. Despite their differences, Adelaide and Damien were young, wild, and fiercely in love.

And they had a plan.

They were going to run away. Be together forever. And their plan was set in motion, until tragedy struck and for some reason, Adelaide wound up in The Oakhill Institution for the insane. Adelaide has no idea what she did to wind up at Oakhill, but she knows one thing for sure...

She wants out.

And after Damien follows her there to aid her in escaping, Adelaide slowly begins putting together the pieces of her memory that are missing. And it doesn't take Adelaide long to figure out that sometimes...

That one true love never dies.
