Triathlons

I was at the gym recently and talked to a friend there about an upcoming triathlon, his first. Talking with him reminded me of my experience last fall in an Olympic-distance triathlon, about which I'd written a journal entry. You might get a couple of chuckles out of this, especially if you've ever run in one of these swim-bike-run events. Here's the journal entry:

In my younger years, I tried my hand at a wide variety of sports. College intramurals in basketball and flag football, r...

First Publicity

Today, on the first day for pre-ordering the book, The Price of Life got some great publicity from Mark Engebretson and the nice folks at The Lake Country Sun. Check it out at http://www.lakecountrysun.com/news/get-community.asp?id=9091&catid=3&cpg=get-community.asp.

Mark is an accomplished author himself. His current series, which includes BLOOD SPIRIT and SPIRIT OF THE SNAKE, are historical novels set in and around Palo Pinto County and what would become PK Lake in the 1870's. They're a grea...

The Publishing Deal

For more than two years, I had dared to dream of becoming a published author. My first novel had been drafted, re-drafted, proofread, drafted again, edited, and put in final form. Query letters had been sent unbidden to agents and publishers, describing in a single page more than three hundred pages of work. Most of those letters brought rejection via form letter, although some were kind enough to reject my work more personally. Some couldn't find the energy to respond at...

Cycling

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in the MS 150 bike ride. What a great experience.

The ride covered 150 miles over two days, from Frisco to Fort Worth with an intermediate stop at the Texas Motor Speedway. Due to a family commitment, I could only ride the first day, which means that I missed the after party in Fort Worth's Sundance Square, but even the abridged event turned out to be a good one for me.

About four thousand riders gathered on a cool Saturday morning at th...

Reunion

The 25-year reunion of the Texas Tech School of Law Class of 1985 took place this weekend at the Gaylord Texan Hotel. While not technically a member of the Class of '85, I received an invitation, probably due to the fact that I graduated in December of that year instead of spending another semester in law school. Looking back, it had to be one of the dumbest decisions of my life. Really, why would anybody want to hurry into the world of full-time employment, when we have the rest of o...

The Interview

Since I finished my book, and certainly since the time I landed my publishing contract, I have wondered whether I would have the chance to be interviewed about my book and my writing. I now know, and while it was nothing like I envisioned, it was a great experience.

First, I never expected it would be a podcast. In my mind's eye, I always pictured a radio or TV studio (I admit, it was usually the set of The Today Show, with Ann Curry asking the questions) for a wide-ranging interv...

The Process - Part 1

Part 1: First Draft

Most of the questions people ask are about The Process--all of the things involved in getting from "I could write a book" to actually getting it published. Here's how it started.

I'd always been an avid reader, and my preference was for fiction, particularly suspense and mystery. Throughout college and law school, I toyed with the idea of writing. Even after I began my law practice, I continued to toy with the idea. Unfortunately, toying with this particular idea does not ...
