Nine Virtues, Nine Vices, and Applied Ecclesiology: a conversation with Roy Oksnevad

In this video I interview Dr. Roy Oksnevad on his recent work on practical ecclesiology. Roy has expanded on the work of Bishop Evagrius of Pontus (d. 399) and proposes nine virtues to develop in a healthy church, and nine vices to avoid.

While Roy’s work is focused on churches consisting mainly of believers who come from a Muslim background, anyone working in church planting can profit from this material. You can contact Roy through his LinkedIn page:

Visita a Córdoba

Eight Dimensions of a Disciple’s Becoming (in the light of ‘modernist’ discipleship)

The Rev. Dr. Mark Durie has proposed eight dimensions of ‘becoming a disciple’.

In these videos, Mark and I converse with each other on the deficiencies of modernist discipleship and try to recover elements from other times that have been forgotten or neglected.

Personally, I see this as trying to recover some Semitic and medieval practices of discipleship. The modernist model of imparting information with the assumption of interior transformation does not deliver. We both share reflections from scholarship, history, Scripture and personal experience in these conversations.

The eight dimensions are:

All the videos are there at my YouTube page, but I wanted to present them in one place for anyone interested.

Feel free to leave questions and comments.

My visit to the Basilica of La Familia Sagrada in Barcelona

(Español abajo)

It’s hard to communicate how dramatic and amazing and impactful Sagrada Familia is, even though it is not yet complete.

During my visit today I learned that Gaudí was not the first architect, but he was the main one. He was a devout Catholic Christian and the highest point of the basilica (not a cathedral) is a bit lower than the peak of the highest mountain in the region because, he said, he was not competing with God.

The church has 12 towers for the apostles, four for the evangelists, one for Mary (recent completed) and the highest one, still under construction for Christ.

Interview w/ Dr Matthew Hoskin on his book about Pope Leo the Great

Dr Matthew Hoskin of the Davenant Institute has released a new book that includes biographical material on Pope Leo the Great as well as new translations of his corpus of writings.

Here is the audio. I’m sorry for the ocasional lapses, but they don’t last long. It’s what happens when one person is in Spain and the other in Canada.

And here is where you can buy his book. (Or ask your local library to buy it.)
