WHAT AM I

This piece is based on my favorite video game, Destiny, published by Bungie. Image courtesy of Bungie.

I used to know who I was. What I was. I had a whole bit about it.

Of course, I wasn't really contemplating that as the hail of super-charged plasma spattered off the walls and pillars of chitin we dodged around. Pale glowing moths and clinging tendrils of swirling darkness, tried to take my attention from the path ahead and the beams of supercharged plasma slashing through the air around us....

Author Interview

It's been a while since I posted something "author-y" here, but author-y things are happening. So I'm pleased to post my first ever author interview. Listen as I stammer my way through through episode #98 of the Daily Author produced by Wooden Pants Publishing. No, really, it's not that bad. However, it should be noted that I made a small mistake. I refer to the local writing organization conference as RMFW (Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers) which is a great organization and con but they are lo...

Order Terra Soul

It's been a long and arduous journey--probably longer than it needed to be but I'm something of a perfectionist and I've never been down this particular road before--but Terra Soul is finally loose in the wild. You may order it on Amazon starting on June 24th. Physical editions will be available soon. Other digital editions will have to wait until September when my Amazon Exclusive deal ends.

In celebration I am also releasing my very own book trailer. Featuring art from Travis...

Book Review - The 100

From the publisher: No one has set foot on Earth in centuries -- until now.

Ever since a devastating nuclear war, humanity has lived on spaceships far above Earth's radioactive surface. Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents -- considered expendable by society -- are being sent on a dangerous mission: to recolonize the planet. It could be their second chance at life...or it could be a suicide mission.

Clarke was arrested for treason, though she's haunted by the memory of what she really did. Wel...

SOUND OF THE MOON

Daniel Green was not like other young men. He was small-framed and lean and seemed perpetually distracted. He did not pay much attention to girls or sports or popular culture. And he was driven by a fearful purpose. Most different of all, he could kill things, things that should not exist. Things that only he could see. Things that only he could hear. Under the choral hum of the moon and the base thrum of the noonday sun he could kill with an efficiency and ferocity that would have horrified...

SOUND OF THE SUN

Daniel Green wasn’t like other boys. He was small and polite. He didn’t like getting dirty or being noisy and he had a driving sense that he would one day do something extremely important. Most different of all, he could hear things, unusual things that escaped the notice of most people. In the summer he could hear the bees singing softly to themselves as they flitted among his mothers creeping myrtle. He could hear the vibrant song of the rainbow and the low bass rumble of the rising sun. It...

The Martian - Book Review

From the Publisher: Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve t...

The Paper Magician - Review

From the Publisher: Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

If that's not an idea that makes you want to pick up a book, I deeply pity you. Charlie N Holmberg's Paper Magician is a story that I simply...

TIME STREAM

Another bit of Destiny fan fiction. Image courtesy of Bungie.

Mother tied my wrist to the pole.

Father covered my eye and put the knife between my teeth.

Together they pushed my coracle into the Time Stream.

They did not speak. It was the way.

In darkness I spun, slowly swirled by the ceaseless current. Blind I worked the oar, the feeling the occasional scrape of the smooth sandstone banks of the river against the wood. I am a desert creature. I fear water as much as I love it. My heartbeat thudde...
