ROYAL COUTURE.....Harry and Meghan Royal Wedding: The WEDDING DRESS and BEST DRESSED Guests!

Meghan Beautiful--Prince Harry and Meghan Markle--the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at their wedding in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle Windsor England

Last weekend, Prince Harry married actress Meghan Markle at a beautiful wedding in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle Windsor England. The royal wedding was watched by millions around the world. The bride wore a simple yet elegant wedding dress from Givenchy Haute Couture and its Artistic Director, 47-year-old Clare Waight Keller. Last year, she became the first woman to hold that title at the famed French fashion house. Earlier this year, in mid-February Meghan Markle visited Waight Keller at a property in South West London for a two-hour secret meeting where Keller showed her archives of designs she did during her time at Chloe as well as catalogs/archives from the House of Givenchy, and that's how the wedding dress design began...

A Simple Duchess--Meghan, Duchess of Sussex in her Givenchy Haute Couture wedding dress--St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle Windsor England

I thought it was a simple--if not quite "barren" gown, in terms of its lack of details, which actually surprised me. Initially, I just wanted "more". By that I didn't mean I wanted a gown fully embroidered with 50,000 crystals and big pouffy sleeves. I just expected maybe more architectural details, such as pleating or draping, especially at the top. But I do understand the impression such a simple "un-fussy" dress tells people; it's modern, and void of the "trappings" of what one would expect from a "Royal" wedding dress. In other words, Markle was transmitting a signal of "I am a Princess for the 21st Century". There have been examples of these "Clean, modern, un-fussy" wedding dresses from royals in recent years...

Wedding Dress Dish:

*The gown took a total of 3,900 hours of work with two small teams exclusively working on the dress at two separate locations.

*The dress was made at the Givenchy Haute Couture Atelier in Paris and the train was made at a secret workshop location in London.

*The workers had to sign nondisclosure agreements (of course!).

*The wedding gown cost an estimated $270,000; it's Haute Couture after all, meaning all hand-made.

*Made of double bonded silk cady with a soft matte luster in "pure white".

*The simple gown features only six seams.

Sketches of Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress--Givenchy Haute Couture

Many people (who know their Fashion History) commented on the similarity of her gown to this...

1964 Givenchy Haute Couture wedding gown design worn by Audrey Hepburn in the photograph above. Similar style and silhouette but instead of silk cady, the fabric used  for the above 1964 design was a silk matelasse

The Veil:

Veil Dish:

*The 16-foot veil mas made of delicate silk tulle.

*The edges featured hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza representing the 53 Countries of the Commonwealth.

*Besides this flora and fauna, additional flowers were added, including the California Poppy as a nod to the bride's California heritage.

*The veil took 500 hours to make with workers having to wash their hands every 30 minutes so to not make the delicate fabric dirty.

The Tiara:

Tiara Dish:

Meghan Markle borrowed the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau Tiara from the Queen Elizabeth II jewels. The crown, made in 1932, was originally from Queen Mary (therefore the name) and featured diamonds set in platinum, and has a detachable brooch made of ten diamonds originally made in 1893. Queen Mary (photo above, left) passed it down to Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and in the past, Princess Margaret, the Queen's sister (photo above, right) wore it to main events.

Best Dressed Guests:

Amal Clooney in Stella McCartney--Amal tops my list of Best Dressed Guests in this canary yellow colored dress from Stella McCartney. When they first showed her--with her hubby George--making her way to the Chapel, I couldn't control myself. All I kept thinking was "She SHUT IT DOWN!!" And she did it in this stylish fitted tea-length dress featuring a back exaggerated tie detail; fabulous from the front and back.

Serena Williams in Versace--Serana looked sexy-gorgeous in this blush pink Versace dress. The dress FIT HER PERFECTLY and featuring fabulous draped pleats at the neckline, torso, waist and diagonally on the skirt section. This was a LESSON Ladies and Gentlemen in how to create a dress that hits all the right figure notes: It creates an hourglass figure, showcasing a teeny tiny waist and perfectly balanced hips. It is Plastic Surgery...IN A DRESS! Bravo Serena and Bravo Versace.

Priyanka Chopra in Vivienne Westwood and Philip Treacy hat--Leave it to a former Miss World and top actress to show all the other ladies how one should look to a Royal Wedding. Priyanka looked chic, regal, above-it-all. And once again, this was an example of design that highlights a woman's figure to the limit and yet, still is giving Royal Wedding appropriateness.

Actress Sarah Rafferty in Lanvin--One of my favorites in terms of what the guests wore to the Royal Wedding, was this navy blue ensemble from Lanvin worn by actress Sarah Rafferty. This was elegance, class and refined style all rolled up into one dress. The tea length and fit were just right and I loved the delicate crystal detail as well. And those gathered silk gazar "balloon" sleeves were EVERYTHING!

Janina Gavankar wearing a 1930's vintage dress and 1940's hat from Western Costume House--I LOVED what Janina wore to the Royal Wedding the minute I saw it! She walked to the Chapel alongside Priyanka Chopra and I almost forgot Priyanka was there--only because she made such a distinct style impression with this coral colored draped dress with fringed shawl. On her Instagram , she said that it was a vintage 1930's dress from Western Costumes in North Hollywood. She also said that her stylist Niki Schwan tried to reach out to designers to dress Janina yet no one responded. Next Time Niki and Janina: DM me on Instagram!!

Lady Kitty Spencer in Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda--Lady Kitty Spencer is Princess Diana's niece and daughter of her brother Charles Spencer. She wore this green A-line shaped dress from Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda, the Haute Couture arm of the Italian fashion house. The tea-length dress was GORGEOUS (as well as it should be since it was probably a $75,000 hand-sewn Alta Moda dress!) and one of my favorites, featuring a square neckline, 3/4 sleeves, a fitted waist and hand-painted flower print.

Sofia Wellesley in Valentino Red--Socialite and James Blunt's wife Sofia Wellesley was one of my Best Dressed Guests at the Royal Wedding in this stunning multi colored floral embroidered macrame dress from Valentino Red --one of the "lower" lines of the Italian house of Valentino And when I say "lower" line, I mean these dresses retail at about $2,000 as opposed to $12,000 for a Valentino. Whatever it cost, she looked beautiful, fashionable and oh-so-right for a Royal Wedding. And she also stood out in the gorgeous print.

Carey Mulligan in Erdem--Speaking of prints, actress Carey Mulligan wore this very pretty flower printed dress from Erdem. I loved everything about it--the tea-length, the flowers, the 1920's/1930's-like silhouette. If anyone wants to know what PRETTY looks like, look at the photo above.

And lastly...

Karen Spencer, Countess Spencer in Pamela Roland--Karen Spencer, Countess Spencer is the wife of Charles Spencer, brother of Princess Diana, wore this violet-hued dress-and-cape ensemble from Pamela Roland. While I get that some people might not be fans and may have found it a little too Cruella de Vil, I disagree COMPLETELY; She looked UBER stylish and quite fabulous! I loved the capelet, the violet color and that great hat!

Congrats Harry and Meghan!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss USA 2018 Finals: The EVENING GOWN RECAP!

USA Queen--Miss Nebraska USA Sarah Rose Summers is Miss USA 2018--Miss USA 2018 Finals Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, Shreveport Louisiana

Last night was the Crowning Night Finals of the 67th Miss USA pageant. Miss Nebraska USA, 23 year-old, 5' 5"(165 cm) tall Sarah Rose Summers bested fifty other contestants for the top crown. This was the first time a contestant from the state of Nebraska has won the prestigious Miss USA beauty pageant. Sarah was not on any Pageantista/Missosologist's Top Faves to win the crown and in fact many of the top faves--Miss California USA, Miss Tennessee USA, to name a couple--didn't even make the Top Five.

Crowned--Outgoing Miss USA Kara McCullough(L) crowns the new Miss USA, Sarah Rose Summers Miss Nebraska USA as Miss Universe 2017 South Africa's Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters and Miss Teen USA 2018 Hailey Colborn (with flowers) look on--Miss USA 2018 Finals Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, Shreveport Louisiana

So it was a total shock but Kudos to Miss Nebraska USA because she surprised all those pageant experts--including herself!--and seriously OUTDID all the other contestants, especially when it came time to answer the very important questions.

OH MY GAWWWD!!--Miss Nebraska USA Sarah Rose Summers (L) reacts as she hears her name being called as the new Miss USA, with her First Runner-up Miss North Carolina Caelynn Miller-Keyes (R)--Miss USA 2018 Finals, Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, Shreveport Louisiana

HEYYYYYY!!--Miss USA 2018 Sarah Rose Summers "Miss Nebraska USA" (center) reacts as she celebrates winning the crown--Miss USA 2018 Finals, Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, Shreveport Louisiana

Sarah had this GENUINE non-"Pageant Perfect" demeanor and realness about her that made her stand out immediately once she made the Top 15. She reminded me A LOT of Tara Conner (for her looks) and Brook Lee (for her unfiltered and genuine answers).

From Nebraska to...USA--Sarah Rose Summers Miss Nebraska USA

The new Miss USA will now move to New York City and will represent her nation at the 2018 Miss Universe contest, to be held at the end of this year. Now that we've gotten all the details out of the way...it's time for THE EVENING GOWNS!!! The Top Ten Finalists got the chance to compete in the Evening Gown "competition" of the pageant and here are my thoughts on the gowns....

Time for the Top Ten Evening Gowns Recap:

Gown Ladies--Miss USA 2018 Top Ten in their evening gowns

I'll begin with the eventual winner, Miss Nebraska USA:

Miss Nebraska USA (and eventual Miss USA) Sarah Rose Summers--Sarah wore this black gown from the pageant's sponsor, Sherri Hill. The gown was impacting--especially with her blond hair and skin tone. This wasn't anything Haute Couture Pageant UBER Fab but it was nice still. The black design featured a sequined column gown with an attached satin gathered overskirt. It was dramatic and elegant; no Hoochie slits no visible tacky stripper platform pumps. Overall, this was nice.

Score: 8.99

And now, my Scores--from Best to...Ayyyy Miss Florida USA!!!:

Miss Nevada USA Carolina Urrea--This was my FAVORITE GOWN of the Top Ten. Hands down. The silver sequined dress was the work of Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza , known for his gowns worn by Miss Universe's and Miss Colombia's alike. Carolina wore this for the Preliminaries and I loved it then as well. The dress is PERFECTION; the sequins, the fit, the style...WOW. This is a gown worth $10,000 if not more. And it was worth every Swarovski crystal.

Score: 9.90

Miss Georgia USA Marianny Egurrola--Marianny wore the same gown she wore to the Preliminaries, this royal blue/nude sequined design from Sherri Hill . She looked gorgeous and like a Miss Universe-worthy queen in this. The color was perfect for her and the fit was ON POINT! The sweetheart neckline highlighted her beautiful shoulders and INSANELY LONG neck.

Score: 9.50

Miss South Dakota USA Madison Nipe--Third on my list was the gown worn by Madison Nipe Miss South Dakota USA. She also wore this for the Preliminaries and it was wise to not change a thing. She looked like a super tall Aishwarya Rai while strutting down the runway/stage. While I'm getting a little tired of the nude/blush/golden gowns, I do get that it's a trend to stay. This was a perfect interpretation of the trend. The gown fit beautifully (it was TO THE FLOOR!) and made her figure stand out. It also looked expensive, well done and was impacting onstage.

Score: 9.40

Miss Tennessee USA Alexandra Harper--Alexandra looked like Miss USA Perfection in this golden/nude sequined applique Custom Jovani gown. She wore this dress for the Preliminaries and chose to wear it for the Finals. The gown featured golden sequined appliques over a nude tulle base of a column dress with a high side slit and attached flowy crepe back overskirt.

Score: 9.35

Miss North Carolina USA Caelynn Miller-Keyes--Caelynn was the First Runner-up of the pageant and she wore this coral colored column gown for the Finals--as well as the Preliminaries. I loved the bold color and clean elegant un-fussy style: This was elegant and chic, and it fit her quite well. If there was any fault: Those Lucite stripper platform heels (Yes, I can see them from under the dress!)--Just too tacky for words. But overall:

Score: 9.10

Miss New Jersey USA Alexa Noone--Alexa also chose to wear the same gown she wore to the Preliminaries. This golden/nude column gown (yes, kids, another one!) featured gold sequined applique over a nude tulle base and was from Miss USA sponsor Sherri Hill. The dress fit her nicely and looked sexy on her. If there was any critique, it would be the weird visible "Grandma Panties" and those nude platform heels. I would have rather seen either more sexier underwear or have the gown be fully lined; and in terms of shoes...gold NO PLATFORM strappy heels. Please.

Score: 8.90

Miss California USA Kelley Johnson--Kelley wore the one gown with a full/A-line silhouette. This black design featured lace organza detail and sequined lace applique as well. This was also the same gown Kelley wore for the Preliminaries and frankly, I wished she would have changed and worn something more fitted and Runway Fierce, especially since she is SIX FOOT TWO and has a PERFECT FIGURE! While this was nice, it didn't take her to a higher (gown) level.

Score: 8.50

Miss Maine USA Marina Gray--This was an interesting choice for Marina. She wore this for the Preliminaries and (I guess) thought it was wonderful enough to wear for the Finals. It's a total knockoff of those Elie Saab/Zuhair Murad gowns from, like SEVEN YEARS AGO...but while I do not fault her for that, I do fault her for not OWNING the fabulousness of this style. This is a dress that requires a RUNWAY DIVA and Marina was good but not so "Diva"-like. On a good note: The powder blue color was pretty.

Score: 8.20

Miss Florida USA Genesis Davila--Genesis was one of the top favorites to win the crown. She lost it during the Question-&-Answer portion (Oh Dear!). It also didn't help matters when she wore this stiff, un-flattering gown for the Evening Gown Competition. At first, when she came out I was "Uh Oh, wait....She is Kinda Working It..Genesis is trying to GIVE Miss Venezuela!!" But then, the gown was not moving, looked awkward and, as they say, the gown was wearing HER as opposed to HER wearing the gown. The design, from Venezuelan pageant gown designer Alejandro Fajardo, was quite stunning on its own--very Couture-worthy hand-sewn Swarovski crystals over nude organza--but when actually worn, it just didn't work. All I can say is: Bless Her (Gown) Heart.

Score: 8.00

CONGRATULATIONS to Sarah Rose Summers Miss Nebraska USA for winning Miss USA 2018!! Good luck at Miss Universe!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss USA 2018 Preliminary Evening Gowns: My TOP 15 BEST!

The Top Gown Ladies--Miss USA 2018 contestants (L to R) Miss Maryland USA Brittinay Nicolette, Miss District of Columbia USA Bryce Armstrong, Miss Illinois USA Karolina Jasko, Miss Nevada USA Carolina Urrea and Miss Tennessee USA Alexandra Harper--Miss USA 2018 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition

Welcome back to my "Sashes and Tiaras" BLOG! Next Monday are the finals for the 67th Annual Miss USA Beauty Pageant so it's time for my Miss USA Evening Gown Recap! Friday night was the Miss USA 2018 Preliminary Competition, held in Shreveport Louisiana with the 51 contestants competing in Swimsuit as well as Evening Gown. Naturally what I care most about are THE GOWNS and what they wore...

Gowns, Gowns, Gowns--(L to R) Miss Georgia USA Marianny Egurrola, Miss Mississippi Laine Mansour, Miss Massachusetts Allissa Latham, Miss Washington USA Abigail Hill--Miss USA 2018 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition

The beautiful women paraded in lots of glittery, see-through and high slit designs. Sherri Hill is one of the big sponsors and from the looks of it, I assume that every contestant was possibly offered a Sherri Hill gown to wear for the Preliminaries--and LOTS of the contestants chose it (or already had decided to wear Sherri Hill)--while a small group did not. Let's take a look at my TOP 15 BEST--and two "Oh Dear's! (wait for that at the end!):

No. 1 Miss District of Columbia USA Bryce Armstrong--My top favorite gown of the night was this one worn by Miss District of Columbia USA. The gold lame strapless gown featured beautiful side draping/pleating, a dramatic side overskirt and an attached column gown with side slit. The overall effect was "Old Hollywood Glamour" 50's fabulousness. Her clean styling, lack of accessories and not-too-fussy "Pageant Betty" hairstyle added a touch of modernity and freshness.

Score: 9.90

No. 2 Miss Nevada USA Carolina Urrea--When Carolina sauntered, yes SAUNTERED, down the stage/runway, it was PERFECTION! She exuded Miss Universe caliber as opposed to Miss USA. I loved this silver/gold all over sequined gown which fit her like a second skin and really had a strong stage impact. She looked like a COUTURE Disco Diva!

Score: 9.88

No. 3 Miss Maryland USA Brittinay Nicolette--Brittinay Nicolette looked GORGEOUS in this royal blue and nude sequined gown and this is why she made my TOP 3 BEST GOWNS of the Miss USA 2018 Preliminary Competition. The gown, which featured intricate sequined applique over see-through/nude tulle, had DRAMA, elegance, sexiness and she OWNED the stage, especially with those back chiffon "falls". With that stunning red hair of hers, in combination with the powerful royal blue...Brittinay looked like a Modern Day Rita Hayworth arriving at the Oscars.

Score: 9.85

No. 4 Miss Mississippi USA Laine Mansour--Miss Mississippi USA looked exquisitely exotic in this nude with turquoise stones gown. When she entered the stage, I instantly recognized that this was no off-the-rack gown--this was Alta Moda darlings! I loved the jeweled sequins and how they gradated from heavy to light through the column gown. I also ADORED that her earrings matched the stones in her dress: WOW! I know that Laine is of Lebanese descent but she looked like a Bollywood former-Miss World beauty...at the Cannes Film festival. Superb Laine!

Score: 9.83

No. 5 Miss Illinois USA Karolina Jasko--Rounding out my TOP FIVE Best Gowns of Miss USA 2018 Preliminaries is this shimmering number worn by Miss Illinois USA. The gown featured black sequins with an attached jeweled necklace and matching STUNNING jeweled waist. It made her look like an Egyptian Princess from a Hollywood film. The dress fit her perfectly and she styled it well with her slicked back hair, clean makeup and gorgeous drop earrings.

Score: 9.80

No. 6 Miss Georgia USA Marianny Egurrola--Marianny Egurrola WORKED her Evening Gown presentation at the Miss USA 2018 Preliminaries. She wore a royal blue-over-nude tulle base heavily sequined gown featuring a super fitted top section. The upper torso was accented with bugle beaded fringe at the shoulders, back and front. this was the perfect color for her naturally tanned skin and dark hair. In a sea of golden/blush/nude gowns, I love when someone does a strong color and defines what Stage Impact looks like! Here was another example of a Miss USA contestant acting, looking and DRESSING like a Miss Universe finalist huney!

Score: 9.70

No. 7 Miss Tennessee USA Alexandra Harper--Now, speaking of those aforementioned Golden/Nude designs..I give you one of the BEST: Miss Tennessee USA. She wore this beautiful dress featuring delicate yet striking sequin applique throughout--from heavy at the top to light at the bottom--and a side front slit as well as back overskirt. This was Pageant Perfection; the gown fit well, she looked amazing and it had beautiful stage impact.

Score: 9.65

No. 8 Miss Florida USA Genesis Davila--Genesis is no first-timer when it comes to pageants; she was Miss World Puerto Rico in 2014, was crowned Miss Florida USA 2017 but then disqualified for having "outside assistance" on hair and makeup but came back this year to win, fair and square as they say. For her Miss USA 2018 Preliminaries Evening gown moment, she donned a...you guessed it!...golden/blush/nude gown. While the style wasn't Earth-shattering in terms of Couture Design, it fit her perfectly and you cannot deny that she looked like a Top Beauty Queen in it, showing off her well-toned arms and gorgeous shoulders. Her top bun was AMAZING as well. If she makes it to the Semi-Finalist round, I am crossing my fingers she changes to something more ALTA MODA FABULOUS, since if anyone can pull it off, it's Genesis.

Score: 9.50

No. 9 Miss Massachusetts Allissa Latham--I LOVE me some canary yellow! if you think I'm kidding, scroll down my Instagram HERE and take a look at the Custom NIKOLAKI Prom Dress we made for my niece Casia. Allissa was an instant gown DIVA from the moment she stepped onto that long runway and swished--yes swished!--that gown of hers. The dress featured a satin halter neckline with jeweled accent, fit-to-flare long gown-skirt, side front slit and voluminous overskirt which she worked OVERTIME! Allissa gets TEN points for her runway walk and this close-to-10 for her gown:

Score: 9.45

No. 10 Miss Kansas USA Melanie Shaner--Speaking of ten, at my No. 10 spot in Top 15 Best Gowns is Miss Kansas USA. She wore this shimmering and fringe-spectacular number in a golden/blush color. The dress fit her beautifully, had DEFINITE stage impact and probably made Liza Minnelli blush with all that bugle-beaded fringe! I want to shimmy shimmy with Melanie all night long!

Score: 9.20

No. 11 Miss Montana USA Dani Walker--Dani wore this red ballgown for the Miss USA 2018 Preliminaries and it instantly got my attention because it was DIFFERENT--and in a good way--from almost all of the other gowns! It was bright red and not golden/nude/blush...it wasn't fitted and tight...I couldn't find a slit...and it was a BALLGOWN. While this could have gone "Scarlett O'Hara"-meets-Quinceañera  in a hot minute, it didn't. I loved it all, the feathers, off-the-shoulder style and the way Dani served you gown realness huney.

Score: 9.10

No. 12 Miss Washington USA  Abigail Hill--Abigail wore this shimmering golden/blush halter style gown. The design featured hundreds if not thousands of encrusted crystals, a split-open skirt and an open back. I thought she looked sexy, glamorous and like a top Hollywood star. Normally I am not a big fan of the front slit being soooooo open but here it worked.

Score: 9.10

No. 13 Miss South Carolina Tori Sizemore--Tori wore one of my Top 15 Best Gowns in this emerald green halter-style dress. The gown exuded Hollywood actress elegance with its simplicity yet enough sparkle to give it interest. I also liked the silky overskirt which flowed in the back and looked marvelous on stage.

Score: 9.05

No. 14 Miss Oklahoma USA Cheyene Darling--Three words: Lady In Red. Cheyene wore this strapless red sequined gown at the Miss USA 2018 Preliminaries. While it was simple in its design, it was all about that lipstick red color, the sequined fabrication and Va Va Voom fit! I thought it was a wise choice to have such sleek hair to almost mirror the sleekness of the gown.

Score: 9.00

No. 15 Miss California USA Kelley Johnson--Last in my Top 15 list is Miss California USA's gown. The very statuesque (6' 2"!) beauty wore this black gown featuring a very fitted lace sequined applique top section and split-front full skirt. It was elegant, impacting and stood out among all those golden/nude/blush sequined column dresses. But I have to say, being that she is so tall, if anyone can pull off a lean and mean column sequined body-con gown...it's Miss Kelley Johnson so...maybe she'll change if she makes the Semifinalist roster.

Score: 8.90

The OH UH'SSS: There were TWO "Oh Dear!" gowns during the Miss USA 2018 Preliminary Competition which I had to highlight--or LOWlight. these two ladies were "Gown Ill Advised". Period. Full Stop. Let's start with...

Miss New York USA Genesis Suero--OK, I already told you guys how much I was a fan of canary yellow. But Oh My Oh My, when Miss New York came out in this I almost spit out my wine! this was Belle from Disney Tackylicious. The fabric looked cheap; I'm not a fan of the wired "curly" hems; the POINTED bust neckline (Ayyy Mija!) but then...

THAT HAIR BUN!!!! It was just too mucheey. I get a Pageant Bun but this one was like on HAIR STEROIDS!!! On a good note, I'm sure there were some Dominican or Puerto Rican Drag Queens in New York that were like YOU GOOOO GURL!!!"

Score: Ayyy No!!

And the second "Oh Dear" Gown Prize goes to:

Miss Ohio USA Deneen Penn--Three Words: Pick Up Pouf. No. I seriously have no idea why anyone in their right mind still designs these tacky 80's Gowns! I guess maybe because there are still ladies that--against their better judgement--buy them!  Deneen is so pretty and I'm sure intelligent as heck! But someone has to tell her 1983 called and they want their dress back...

NO PICK UP POUF GOWNS!!!!! Please.

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Nick Verreos Judges "Project Runway" Season 17 L.A. Castings: BLOG RECAP!

Ready for Season 17--(L to R) Nick Verreos, Mondo Guerra and Veronique Hyland, judging the L.A. Castings of "Project Runway" Season 17, Bunim-Murray Productions, Glendale CA

Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to judge the Los Angeles Castings for Season 17 of "Project Runway". In all my years involved with the show, I think I have judged about FOURTEEN seasons of "Project Runway" , starting back in Season 3, following my season. For many of those early castings--and up until about Season 13--I had the pleasure of judging with the one-and-only Tim Gunn:

Casting Collage from "Project Runway" Castings Seasons 3, 7, 8, 12, 13--Nick Verreos with Tim Gunn, as well as Alison Edmond (lower, left) and Zoe Glassner (lower, right)

This year, I joined Mondo Guerra and Elle Magazine contributor Veronique Hyland , to form the L.A. Judging Panel. We saw many, many designer/contestant hopefuls for the show for a total of two days, so it will be really fun (and interesting) to see who actually made the final cut.

"Project Runway" Season 17 Casting Call--Bunim-Murray Productions, Glendale CA

WHO WORE WHAT?.....2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards Red Carpet: Muy Bien and Oh Dear!

Las Muy Bien!--(L to R) Becky G, Carmen Villalobos, Cynthia Olavarria and Fernanda Castillo--2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Mandalay Bay Center Las Vegas Nevada

Thursday night were the 2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards  or Premios Billboard at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nevada. The show was televised on Telemundo, showcasing singers and music ranging from Reggaeton, Tropical, Regional Mexican, etc. In terms of the red carpet, The Latin Billboards are known to be quite a mix of looks. For the ladies we saw lots of Pageant Dresses, Cleavage and Leg, a sprinkling of elegance and oh yes, many "Ayyy Dios Mio!".

Los Mejor Hombres--(L to R) Maluma, Ricky Martin, Rodner Figueroa and Chayanne--2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Mandalay Bay Center Las Vegas Nevada

And while many of the boys couldn't stop themselves from looking like Tacky-licious Pimps, I was glad to see sharp and dapper-suited men on the red carpet...many of them looking better than the women, in fact! I'll talk about my Best & "Oh No!" of the men at the end of this blog but first...let's start with the Best Dressed LADIES:

Colombian actress Carmen Villalobos: Carmen Villalobos looked like a STAR in an entrance-making gown from Steven Khalil. The dress featured a fitted torso with plunging neckline that then flared into a very full and dramatic box-pleated skirt section. While it could be argued that maybe it was "a bit too much" for an event such as the Latin Music Billboard awards, I loved it because it had the right amount of "Wow" and wasn't too Pageant Loca! She looked beautiful, sexy and ready for the Premios Billboard ball!

Singer and actress Becky G--Becky G was one of my BEST DRESSED at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in this simple and elegant black bias cut gown. The dress featured a cowl draped front neckline, tiny spaghetti straps and extra long length. She gave a 1930's vibe but of course, brought it to 2018 with her great braids!

Actress and former 1st Runner-up to Miss Universe 2005 Cynthia Olavarria--Gorgeous Cynthia looked...MUY BELLA in this violet-colored sequined gown from Sherri Hill. The criss-cross halter neckline dress fit her perfectly and had the right amount of drama and impact that only a former Miss Puerto Rico Universe could pull off perfectly! This is how you do a sequined gown without looking too "Pageant Queen"; this is Red Carpet Fab.

Mexican actress Deborah Comba--Simple and chic. This was one of my favorites for its classic lines and elegant prettiness. I loved the blouson waist and curved sequined fabrication. The clean hair, red lipstick and lack of accessories also were just right for this look; she was modern and fresh.

Mexican actress Fernanda Castillo--I loved this fiery red gown on actress Fernanda Castillo. The sequined dress featured a draped side, high side slit, long sleeves and shoulder padded shoulders. It was on trend, 90's hot, and looked great on her. I also LOVED the fact that she didn't wear some tacky-licious platform "Stripper" pumps like so many ladies are wont to do; instead she did right by wearing these black strappy heels. Excelente querida Fernanda!

Telemundo TV Host Rashel Diaz--The beautiful Rashel wore this silver-gray one shoulder gown from Nathalie Kriado which was worthy of my BEST DRESSED List! Rashel gave you amazing shape, interesting asymmetrical detail and fabulous leg! From head to toe, this was a MUY BIEN Red Carpet moment! And not that I need to add to all that but...the shoes were PERFECT as well as the top knot hairstyle.

Venezuelan actress Gaby Espino--Several ladies tried to give that popular "nude dress: look but I think Gaby's was the best. She wore this golden/silver applique gown over nude tulle emphasizing her fabulous body but not in a vulgar way. I was especially happy that the length was on-point and right to the floor, covering her shoes and last but not least,  I also loved her slicked back hair and perfectly tanned skin

And last in my BEST DRESSED:

E! Entertainment On-Air Correspondent Sibley Scoles--At first, I was like "This could be an "Oh Dear!" moment but the more I looked at it, the more I was like "At-A-Gurl!". Sibley wore this striped golden gown featuring a high center front slit, open sides and SUPER plungling front neckline. All of those things would normally go into the "HOOCHIE NOT CUTE" category but darlings, she WORKED IT! I also loved the clutch and silver strappy heels.

And now...Time for the AYYYY MIJA'S! or Oh Dear!

Venezuelan born TV Host Alexandra Olavarria--There is not much I can say about this other than "What was she thinking?". She's wearing a poncho-like top section...with fringe (Que??) and hot shorts...and a chiffon split-front overskirt. And nude peep-toe platforms. It's a mess. But on a good note: She's got AMAZING legs!

Colombian Reggaeton Singer/Songwriter Karol G--I am not really sure what is happening here. I know that the late 80's and 90's are "BACK!" in terms of fashion, but seriously this "Demi Moore in bicycle shorts at the 1989 Oscars" moment is one style trend I DO NOT want to see. And if in fact this is what she was going for, it was a very cheap version. The fit is not cute, the boobs are sagging, the seams are rippling...GLOVES!!!...Ayyy Dios Mio! On a good note: The strappy heels were kinda cute!

Radio Host Jessica Flores--A silver crop top and silver mini. And "cage" shoes. Jessica has a FAB body but in terms of a red carpet look, this was as if she went to the mall and spent $30, at the most. At least she was thrifty! I just think this is better suited if you're going to an off-the-Vegas Strip Birthday Party for a best friend who used to be a Stripper. For sure.

Singer Paty Cantu--Silver sequined jumpsuit...with a nude colored tulle overskirt. If this was done by, say...Lebanese couturiers Elie Saab or Zuhair Murad: FABULOUS but here, it was definitely an "Oh Dear!" moment (I know this was NOT by those designers, thank goodness!). And to top off this Tacky-licious red carpet moment, somehow someone told her wearing pink peep-toe platform pumps was the PERFECT thing to do: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

TV Host/Actress Raquel Lisboa--Please tell me that I really do not need to explain why this look above is in my WORST DRESSED at the Premios Billboard Alfombra Roja List. If I do, let me start with the awful fit (too short and too tight); the "Hola Boob-a-Licious" neckline; and yes, THOSE nude platforms! Listen, I'm sure the straight guys were like going crazy over this but, this fashionista was like "Ayyy Mija!!!".

Latin Music Expert/TV Host Leila Cobo--While I like the dress, I think the velvet fabrication might have been too heavy and the cascade ruffle front didn't add any good style drama; it all looked forced. And then, I just wonder who told her to wear those ABBA-esque silver shoes???  Whoever that was, they should be removed from her iPhone's address list. Pronto.

Actress, Model and former Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera--Listen, I will be the first to say that Zuleyka is one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN in the World--heck, that's why she won Miss Universe! She won it TWELVE YEARS AGO and she could easily win it TODAY! But...this dress/look was a tacky mess. The side straps, too-much exposed skin, the gold applique trim, the gold shoes...the top-knot braid...it's just TOO MUCHEY, and too much craving attention. Zuleyka doesn't need to scream "Look at me" this way, because EVERYONE will even if she's wearing a t-shirt and jeans: SHE"S STUNNING! This dress cheapened her and made her look like a concubine in a low-rent film about Morocco.

Dominican Singer Natti Natasha--At first, I thought this was an "interesting" look. First off, Natti Natasha's face and hair are BEAUTIFUL! But then, I had to bring it back to the outfit: An asymmetrically cut long tunic/top with silver crystal studs and one sleeve...over a skirt. So far, it wasn't that bad but...

OH NO! UNDER BOOB SHOWING!!! This was THE "Ayyy Mija!" moment for me that ended up putting her in my "Oh Dear!" List. Full stop.

And now, the BEST DRESSED HOMBRES!

Ricky Martin--Puerto Rican singer/actor/Latin Music Icon Ricky Martin looked sharp and perfectly suited for the 2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards. And that's why he was one of my BEST DRESSED Men. I loved this three piece gray plaid suit on him and how "Hipster Dapper" he looked in it--the no socks...no-lace shoes...cropped pants...no tie dress shirt...he was giving Tailored but Casual Elegance. Muy on-trend Ricky.

TV Host Rodner Figueroa--Rodger looked ultra chic and ultra elegant in this double breasted tuxedo. All he needed was a Very DIRTY Martini! I LOVED every inch of it! EXCELENTE Rodner!

"Al Rojo Vivo" Newscaster Quique Usales--One of my BEST DRESSED MEN at the 2018 Premios Billboard was Telemundo personality Quique Usales. I loved his dressed-up off-white "Smoking Jacket" shawl collar tuxedo ensemble. He looked polished, elegant and very well dressed.

Colombian Singer Maluma--Maluma was another red carpet boy giving three-piece/cropped pant/no sock look (a la Ricky Martin) and I loved it! He looked elegant and dapper yet still hispter cool. I really liked the tiny bow tie, black glasses and black velvet slippers.

Chayanne--Puerto Rican Latin Music icon Chayanne gave all those young boys a run for their style money: He looked BETTER than many of those kids darlings! I loved this blue suit on him--it looked expensive, well-tailored and super sharp on him. I also liked the no tie/open shirt look with it; he was giving "I'm Casual yet still MUY Chic!"

Telemundo Digital Presenter Christian Acosta--The shiny tuxedo jacket was a BIG trend on the red carpet at the 2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards and Christian was one of the BEST looks following this Menswear trend. I liked the cut of the jacket, the color as well as how he paired it with skinny trousers. The big puffy bow tie was quite nice as well.

Singer/TV Host Poyato--Another great shiny jacket boy was Poyato. I love a fab blue tuxedo jacket and his was GREAT! The tailoring was nice and his lean pants were a perfect pairing.

Puerto Rican Reggaeton Rapper/Singer/Songwriter Wisin--Lastly, in my BEST DRESSED MEN list was Wisin in this black suit. I absolute loved the jacket with the sequined lapels, as well as the skinny tie. He looked elegant, well-dressed and not tacky "Pimp Reggaeton"-y. Gracias Wisin.

And finally, here are the "Ayyyy No!" Men of the 2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards Red Carpet:

Venezuelan-born Music Producer Motiff--While I do like this colorful bomber jacket, I think the entire look including the supper skinny leather (or pleather) pants, red suede boots, plunging neckline gray knit t-shirt, jewelry, sunglasses...was just 2 seconds from being too douchey. Seriously. I bow to him as a producer and all the fab music he has done but...this look will not, I guarantee you, age well.

Music artist Thomas Augusto--OK, first off, Thomas is a total cutey! I know I sound like a 16 year-old girl but, he is!!! However, this look of his was a MESS: A plaid jacket, capri-style worn/ripped jeans, suspenders, red 80's style combat boots...Once again, I know the 90's are all the rage but this is a bit too contrived and over-styled and not a red carpet look. This is more appropriate for a 2AM club/party...and even then, if I was a VIP "Guest List" check-in person, I might not let him in.

Raggaeton Singer/Composer Chucho Flash--This look above makes me want to give all my GG Gucci belts away to one of my local Thrift/Vintage/Re-Sale Stores! ASAP! I don't even know where to begin with this. It's just too flashy and too tacky. Maybe that's the point but I still don't think it's right. Next time, don't put your iPhone in your pocket, don't wear so much LOGO-A-Gogo and don't make your tie so short. It all looks as if he is trying to look like a "baller" or as if he has money to buy Gucci but we all know all those Gucci sales people are laughing at him.

Puerto Rican Raggaeton and Latin Trap Singer Bad Bunny--Listen, I get the whole Alessandro Michele/Dolce& Gabbana  70's Retro Brocade/Jacquard Look that's happening but somehow, I just think it didn't work for Bad Bunny. It's a beautiful suit but he is the wrong person to be wearing it. Once again, this is one of those photos that he's going to look back at in like...TWO YEARS..and think "What was I thinking?" (I hope!).

Colombian Singer/Songwriter Sebastian Yatra--I get what Sebastian was going for with this wine-red velvet "Lounge Suit" look with a leaf-printed shirt. He's on-trend with the 70's vibe but it just looked sloppy and almost as if he was advised (by a stylist) to wear this...even though he probably would have worn something else. Here's some advice: You don't want to look as if you have already gone to the AFTER PARTY...when it's only 3pm at the pre-show Red Carpet.

And LASTLY...Please Stop The Tongue Photos!

Motiff and Thomas Augusto: STOP! Please. STOP. This is NOT a good red carpet look.
