The Attraction of Dystopia

So many times in science fiction, we write about dystopian worlds… and as readers, we are also attracted to them.

Have you ever asked yourself: What is the attraction of dystopia?

It’s an important question to ask, because I think dystopia hold different attraction for different types of people. For myself, I enjoy writing about dystopia because it gives my characters a chance to grow. It gives them opportunities to discover their values, face their fears, and transform into heroes and heroines that are greater than they every could have imagined.

I also enjoy thinking about society, government, and economics – about the lengths that some people will go to for power, and then lengths others will go to for survival.

For it is often through the worst circumstances imaginable that we can discover who we truly are.

If you, like me, enjoy dystopia, here is a wonderful video set in a dystopian reality. It’s another song from Starset, called Carnivore.

Guardians of the Galaxy II and Alien Invasion – Why we need sadness in fiction

As I left the theater after sitting through the rollercoaster that was GGII, I felt…satisfied. I felt worn out, emotionally drained, grounded, and realized I’d cried at least three times during the last half of the movie. Breaking down the plot later over pie and coffee, I realized that nearly every character had a story arc, filled with real grief: loss of family, loss of friends, and facing who they really were deep inside.

In this day and age, putting out a blockbuster like that takes guts. Most people are looking for escapism in their entertainment, and ‘sad’ movies don’t particularly do well for repeat viewings.

But life is not always happy, is it? And if we don’t have some movies like GGII where we see characters grappling with – dare I say it? – being human, having real problems when faced with supernatural difficulties, then where do we draw inspiration? How do we get the courage to carry on when everything is going wrong, and we’re faced with life’s myriad problems and relationship difficulties?

As I was writing the first two episodes of my Alien Invasion series, I remember my critique group and beta readers muttering under their breath that the series was ‘gloomy’ and ‘sad’. It was at about the end of episode II when I realized that the first five episodes of the series were going to be sad all the way through.

Perhaps it was my fault, I started the series with an invasion and from there on out it was going to be…pretty dark. And of course, they couldn’t be victorious until the end of episode V.

But my argument went something like this: What’s wrong with being sad?

Sure, there are times when we want lighthearted comedy, when we want everything to end up as a Happily Ever After and we watch our favorite characters ride off into the sunset. Let’s call them “Indiana Jones” moments.

But there are other times, days when you’re not looking for a tickle and a giggle. Times when you’re looking for something with more depth, more meaning. Times when you’re faced with real suffering:  cancer, natural disasters, war, or even our own death.

At those times in my life, happy, sappy stories seemed out-of-place, and I was looking for something… more real. And that used to be hard to find in science fiction and fantasy. But that’s what I tried to do with Alien Invasion.

Alien Invasion isn’t GGII; there isn’t a dancing baby Groot to take away from the fact that my villians are a species that simply kills all mammals on every planet they encounter. But it is real. It’s dark, it’s scary, and you will see grown men cry. And depending on your context, your life at this moment… that could be just what you are looking for.

Starset – Halo

I wrote most of the Alien Invasion series listening to a band called Starset. Their music is dark and powerful, desperate but hopeful. When I was listening to this album on my iphone, I didn’t realize they actually had a sci-fi romance video out! Well, they might not consider it sci-fi romance, but I certainly do. Take a look – you won’t be sorry!

Welcome to Immortal Angel – and Serials!

Journeying to far away places, romances with men from another world, adventures with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat – if you love these things, then you might love my science fiction and fantasy romance serials.

I write fast-paced science fiction and fantasy romance with quite a bit of heat. I write serials – which are not just books that are chopped into five, ten, or twenty pieces. The serials I write are like episodes – each

has its own story arc and plot twist, and most usually end on a cliffhanger.

I’ve been writing for several years now, and find my stories are only getting faster – and hotter – with time.

I love to hear from readers – writing is too often a one-way communication – so if you have the urge to put fingers to keys, my e-mail is immortalangelwrites@gmail.com, or you can leave a comment below!

All the best,

Immortal Angel

In Darkness

Successful coffee shop owner Sarah Matthews is doing fine on her own. She doesn’t have time for Michael Davis, the boy who joined the army and broke her heart four years ago. Even though his boy-next-door looks have melted away, replaced by the hard body of a military man.

To prove it, she attends the yearly Halloween bash at the old Whiteside warehouse. Slightly tipsy and a whole lot of lonely, she leaves with a man in a demon mask. That night of anonymous pleasure is the stuff of every erotic fantasy she’s ever had. But this kind of mind-numbing sex can only be a one-time thing, right?

When her anonymous demon slips her a card with his phone number, she’s left with a choice. Should she spend her nights with the sexy demon who won’t interfere with her orderly life, or forgive Michael and take a chance on something real?
