Book Review: “The Gathering Storm” by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson—Reviewed by Chris Whelan

Introduction:

You’ll recall I did a giveaway for A Memory of Light the fourteenth and final novel in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series recently. Sparked by commenters’ enthusiasm, and given the significance of this series within the epic fantasy canon, I asked long time SFF reader, Chris Whelan, if he would review the final three books in the series—all written by Brandon Sanderson in accordance with notes left by Robert Jordan.

Chris is a new reviewer for “…on Anything, Really” and I’m very...

Tuesday Poem: “Pied Beauty” by Gerard Manley Hopkins

Glory be to God for dappled things –
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced – fold, fallow, and plough;
And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.
.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckles (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.

.

What’s A-Happening Now, Plus What’s Coming Up on “Anything, Really”

Right now I’m keeping my main focus on writing, writing Daughter of Blood, The Wall of Night Book Three but there are a few other things happening right now.

UK Mass Market Publication of The Gathering Of The Lost

Firstly, the mass market edition of The Gathering Of The Lost, The Wall of Night Book Two is now out in the UK. If I’m to keep the writing momentum going on Daughter of Blood then I can’t take time out to do a lot of promo (as per last year’s Blog Tour, which was great but d...

Three Arcane Secrets for Successfully Writing Books in the 21st Century

Because I have mainly been writing today, it felt appropriate to quickly take time out to share my three most arcane secrets of successfully writing books in the 21st century with you:

Stay off the internet.

Stay off the internet.

Stay off the internet.

A Geography of Haarth: Aralorn

The Wall of Night Series map; design by Peter Fitzpatrick

The A Geography of Haarth series features locales and places from The Wall of Night—a fitting focus given yesterday’s mass market release of The Gathering Of The Lost in the UK. ;-)

“Aralorn: a land south of The River, one of the Southern Realms of Haarth.”

.

“Aralorn, thought Carick, frowning over his mental map, was to the south and east of Emer, a land of sheep, chestnut woods, and quiet hills.”

Commemorating February 22nd, 2011: “Disintegration”

Spring blossom; valiant on a vacant (demolition) lot

Today is the second anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake of February 22, 2011 that killed 185 people, injured many more, and devastated the inner city and eastern and hill suburbs of our city, resulting in two years—so far—of demolition, emergency responses and repairs, and the slow beginnings of rebuild.

Because I wish to commemorate the event and both its immediate and more enduring aftermath, I am posting the poem Disintegration toda...

UK/AUS/NZ

Today, Thursday 21, is the UK mass market release date for The Gathering of the Lost — w00t!

I am not doing a big celebration because right now I feel my energy is better focused on completing Daughter of Blood: The Wall of Night Book Three and getting it out there to all of you I now are waiting. :)

But nonetheless I am very excited about it, and to celebrate, have done a guest post for Orbit–who are of course my UK publisher, so it’s absolutely fitting!

Celebrating Epic Fantasy in “The Gathering Of The Lost”

UK/AUS/NZ

As posted yesterday, the mass market edition of The Gathering Of The Lost will be released in the UK later today—Thursday 21 February, but UK time. That means my celebratory post on the Orbit blog (the site of my UK publisher), won’t be up until much later today.

So in the meantime, I shall re-post another of the guest posts from the”‘grand blog tour” I did for the US and UK trade release last year—all as a way of celebrating The Gathering Of The Lost right here on “…Anything, Really....
