Comment Of The Week: from Elizabeth (Liz) Gatens

“Brilliant, gripping, fantastic backstory: my only gripe is you write great characters I love and then you kill them! I cast my vote for GATHERING in complete good conscience that I think it deserves the award.”

(Liz means the Gemmell Legend Award, by the way.)

I alluded to the reason why characters you love may die in my books in a post titled: Romance vs Reality: War & Conflict in Epic Fantasy and “The Gathering of the Lost.”

(Just click on the title to read.)

Liz is a speculative fiction auth...

The Crown of Good Company: BookSworn ‘Legends’

On Monday I posted about The Gathering Of The Lost having been nominated for the David Gemmell Legend Award.

I also mentioned that:

“It is a tremendous thrill to see my novel longlisted with so many international Fantasy authors whose work is celebrated in the genre—what my friend, poet Bernadette Hall, would call “the crown of good company.”

In the spirit of that “good company” I would also like to draw your attention to the new-out BookSworn post featuring the books of all four BookSworn autho...

Big Worlds On Small Screens: Rebecca Fisher Discusses “Maddigan’s Quest”

By Rebecca Fisher

Introduction:

Back in 2006, a little show comprised of thirteen half-hour episodes aired on New Zealand television. Despite being based on a book by one of our most beloved Kiwi writers and winning several television awards, it never garnered much attention, but now seems as good a time as any to shine a light on Maddigan’s Quest.

The project began when South Pacific Pictures approached author Margaret Mahy with a proposal to collaborate on a children’s drama series for televis...

Tuesday Poem: “Godwitting” by Bella Boyd

Godwitting

Wing out wilde bells,

restrain your dogs

spring harbingers clock in

sing of Limosa Lapponica,

fingers of Charadriiformes,

waders from the 16th C

flying in shrink wrapped

bedraggled

foraging for molluscums crustaceans in

shallows shining estuary,

where spring is peppered with

sewage and salted sea

wring out concerns,

for these summer tourists

pilot 11,000 Ks

trinkets to people twin share.

Roosting bibs a ruddy red,

waiting wind streams

homing Artic breeding grounds

godwitting on refuel

in yellow seas

Just Arrived: “The Judas Tree” — Poems By Lorna Staveley Anker; edited by Bernadette Hall

I haven’t had a new collection of poetry to read for a while, so I was delighted when Bernadette Hall sent me a copy of The Judas Tree a posthumous collection of poems by Lorna Staveley Anker.

The Judas Tree was edited by Bernadette and is published by Canterbury University Press (2013.)

I am hoping to share a few of the poems with you via The Tuesday Poem, but in the meantime, here’s what the backcover has to say:

“LORNA STAVELEY ANKER was born in 1914. She used to joke that this was the cause...
