David Gemmell Legend Award Shortlisting: ‘Still Ongoing’, Plus Even More Coming Up!

Events To Date:

The Legend Award

On August 15, just over a month ago, I announced that The Gathering Of The Lost (The Wall Of Night Book Two) had made the shortlist for the David Gemmell Legend Award — and since then you’ll have noticed that there’s been quite a bit of Legend shortlist related activity — more, I think, than for the Morningstar Award last year, which is interesting to see.

So far, the focus has been around interviews, with Q&A’s so far on Dark Matterzine, Beatties BookBlog, ismel...

Comment Of The Week: from StephF

“I loved The Heir of Night, it was such a fantastic book. It was one of the first epic fantasy books I ever read and it got me hooked on the genre. “

StephF made this comment on my September 1 post on the Supernatural Underground. Given my love of epic fantasy, I think you’ll understand why I liked it!

The Great BookSworn Worldcon Party!

By way of more fun stuff, although I could not attend this year’s Worldcon in San Antonio, my books were there at the BookSworn authors party — where if you ate a bug (yup, that’s right, a bug!) you got a book!

To read fellow BookSworn author, and party organizer, Courtney Schafer’s report, click on the post title:

You gotta go to the site to find out who everyone in the photo is. ;-)

A Geography Of Haarth: Hillholt

The Wall of Night Series map; design by Peter Fitzpatrick

The A Geography of Haarth post series is traversing the full range of locales and places from The Wall of Night world of Haarth. Today we venture further into “H.”

Hillholt: a clan territory of Emer’s Hill people

“The woman smiled thinly. “It’s true that Barrowdun and Hillholt are as likely to raid each other as stand together. But what preys on our farmsteads and hunting runs now is not of the Hills, even though the incursions against...

Big Worlds On Small Screens: Rebecca Fisher Discusses “Roar”

by Rebecca Fisher

Introduction:

This show is an oddity. Not something that I can recommend as anything other than a fledging programme that was never given the chance to reach its potential, a mish-mash of storylines and tonal shifts that changed dramatically from episode to episode, and a vehicle for a then-eighteen year old Heath Ledger. Roar is a show suited for the curious, not those looking for a genuinely rewarding viewing experience.

It was damned by the network, for despite having commis...

Tuesday Poem: “Lijssenthoek” — A Haibun By Joanna Preston

Lijssenthoek

.
the fields of flanders –
the rich red
of the cemetery gates

.

There. Red brick and white stone; an archway anything but triumphal. We wheeled our hired bicycles through the gate-building, blinking at the transition from light to shadow to light again as we stepped out into the garden. And garden it was. Rows of lilies, ranged in front of the crosses that marked the Canadian graves. The New Zealand graves. The South African graves. But not cut flowers – every grave had a fl...

Comment Of The Week: From Aron

“I was reading a teasing chapter of The Heir Of Night from the end of [another] book … I wanted more! … I went to the library and asked if they had the book… they didn’t have it so they brought it from abroad! MVH Happy reader from Sweden.”

Aron’s comment posted on “What I’m Doing A Daughter Of Blood” – I hope you also enjoy the story within a story of “How I Discovered The Heir Of Night.” ;-)

A Writing Quote For Saturday: from Junot Diaz

“The whole culture is telling you to hurry, while the art tells you to take your time. Always listen to the art.”

~ Junot Diaz

This quote was Junot Diaz’s answer to the question: “What advice would you give to an aspiring author?”

The question is part of an interview with Noah Charney on The Daily Beast, here: Junot Diaz Interview
