Writing Outside the Lines with Dyslexia

I’m not sure when dyslexia became a common word. I remember seeing a commercialfor it when I was younger, but in school I was labeled dumb, lazy, and a “slow reader.”People seem to think it goes away when you get older. It doesn’t. You just learn how towork with it.

Dyslexia is like someone telling me that I’m mispronouncing a word, but then not tellingme how to pronounce it correctly. I know I’m doing it wrong, but I don’t know how to do itright.

The most debilitating for me is that I can’t...

Why Do Thirteen Year Old Girls Disappear?

I made Agatha Stone, the protagonist of The Lost Knight Series, thirteen yearsold to embody just how unprepared she was to save the world. But I discoveredsomething interesting: she doesn’t have a lot of other girls her age to stand nextto on the shelf.

When I finished the series, my daughter was thirteen. She might have been ableto save the world, but no one asked her so we will never know. No one ever asksa thirteen year old girl to do anything. We often say how hard “that age” is, butthere...

How Do You Debrief Social Issues?

The best thing about our youth is the freedom we feel. Often times we don’t have to deal with a lot of the issues that plague adults. As we inherit the society that was shaped and formed before we were born though, it’s pretty important that we stay aware of the issues going on around us.

Thankfully social media has brought the world much closer to us so we can learn about things going on in other cities and around the world at the touch of our computer or smartphone keys. At times, all of t...

How Books & Pets Are The Same

True book lovers know that reading is one of the best things you can do for your mind and imagination. Pet lovers probably treasure their furry friends just as much as bibliophiles value their book collections. The correlation between books and pets is a strong one. Just like we treasure our pets and take good care of them, we do the same for our beloved books. You want more ways that show how books and pets are similar?

Here are a few:

We can spend hours engrossed in our books and pets. Th...
