The Good Word podcast with Trina Boice

http://www.radiogoldproductions.com/thegoodword/episode-104-interview-with-trina-boice/

                                           Logo

I recently did an interview with a new friend, Nick Galieti, host of "The Good Word" podcast.  He's an author himself who has created a wonderful outlet for other LDS authors to spread the news about their books and literary passions.

Nick records his shows at Eborn Books in downtown Salt Lake City and then hosts a book signing right after the interview.   Unfortunately, I don't live in Utah, so our interview was held over the phone only.   Drats!  It would have been fun to meet him in person and visit with other guests!

The Good Word is designed to be a show where all books are welcome and the craft of writing is discussed to lift and inspire.  He was a great interviewer and allowed me to slobber on and on about some of my newest projects, as well as talk about some of my favorite books from the past.

Check out our interview together at:   http://www.radiogoldproductions.com/thegoodword/episode-104-interview-with-trina-boice/

What did YOU think of Les Miserables?

Nominated for BEST PICTURE today at the Academy Awards nomination ceremony!

Yep, I was one of the excited fans who lined up to see Les Miserables on Christmas Day.  Usually, Christmas day is spent at home with family, but I just couldn't wait to see this film and introduce my kids to this beloved story and music.  I loved it and cried like a blubbering idiot at the end....BUT....parents beware.

This film definitely should have been rated R.  I remember seeing trailers for Les Mis several months ago and thought it interesting that the preview always carried the text "this film has not yet been rated."  I was hoping for a PG-13 so that I could take my family to see it.  Granted, the subject matter of the story includes several dark themes, but you don't have to show all of the filth in the gutter to know it's there, right?

For example, the prostitute scene went far beyond what it needed to get the point across.  I was completely shocked and extremely disappointed.  My four sons sat next to me watching something they should never have to see.  Call me an over-protective mother, but really?  Did we have to see that played out?  The thing about rated R movies and disturbing images is that, once seen, they're  difficult to erase from your mind. Isn't the point of an R rating to protect younger, more innocent eyes and minds?  Did it seriously NOT cross the minds of those who determine ratings that a scene like that would be offensive to tender eyes?

Likewise, the innkeepers are usually the comic relief in the stage production of Les Miserables, but in this movie they were vulgar and disgusting. They weren't playfully imperfect, but simply crude and revolting.  There were only a few quiet laughs in the movie audience, not the usual adoring applause that a more innocent stage play evokes for the Thenardiers.

Less can definitely be more. When Russell Crowe's character Javert jumps off the bridge you hear the loud thump and crunch of his body hitting below, eliciting a united groan from the audience.  We don't have to see and hear everything to understand what is happening.  While I applaud the director for making certain bold choices, I am disappointed that he didn't rate this movie correctly and he went too far with other things.

I would have loved to see Fantine dressed in a clean, white dress with her long hair again in the end when she was escorting Jean Valjean to his heavenly reward...she was in heaven, after all.  (wink)  Anne Hathaway did a magnificent job, as did Hugh Jackman. While this movie version doesn't provide the "pretty" rendition of the songs, it packs a powerful emotional punch that makes you feel the music in an entirely new way. Hugh Jackman's meaty performance was truly inspiring.

What a special treat to see Colm Wilkinson, who was the first Valjean on Broadway, included in the cast in the role of the forgiving Bishop of Dignewas.  Russell Crowe's performance was believable as a tormented, driven man, but his vocals weren't as strong as most people had hoped to hear from Javert.

Speaking as a parent who wants to share good movies with my children, the "Titanic" movie was great....except for that one nude scene.....this movie had a similar effect on me...it would have gotten two thumbs way up from me...except for the prostitution scene and the innkeepers' crudeness.  Parents: beware.

My favorite line: To love another person is to see the face of God.  We are all truly "lost in the valley of the night" as we long to be a people "who are climbing to the light."

Let's be honest...Halloween is a weird American holid...

Let's be honest...Halloween is a weird American holiday!  The rest of the world celebrates something somewhat similar called Carnival.   Costumes are adorned and parties are plentiful.  So what makes Halloween different than Carnival? Well, for starters, we add the creepy, spooky element to the festivities.  Carnival usually occurs in the spring, while here in America, we often need coats or umbrellas to protect our costumes in the crisp fall when we celebrate.

Anciently, the Celts celebrated their new year during this time, marking the end of the warmer weather harvest and the beginning of the cold, approaching winter months.  They believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and dead was blurred.  They also believed that as they surrounded a big bonfire, dressed in costumes, that they could predict the future, as well as protect themselves in the upcoming year against bad fortune.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as "All Saints Day", a day to honor all saints and martyrs, possibly as an attempt to veer Christians away from the Celtic pagan traditions.  The night before the holiday, October 31st, was known as "All Hallows' Eve" which eventually became more secular, including parades and sweet treats for the children.

Today, Halloween festivities involve community events, trick or treating, and an attempt to focus on the fun party atmosphere, rather than on the religious tones, although death and superstition are definitely still part of the mix.

Here are some Halloween words for my international friends who are trying to make sense of it all:

* apparition - an unusual or unexpected sight, a ghost

* macabre - grim, horrific, repulsive

* cackle - to laugh, especially in a harsh or sharp

manner

* Jack-o'-lantern - a lantern made of the rind of a

pumpkin in which holes are cut to represent eyes,

nose, and mouth

* poltergeist - a noisy, mischievous ghost

* bloodcurdling - arousing fright or horror

* ghastly - terrifyingly horrible to the senses

If you're a fan of my books, then you can probably guess that I'll never write a spooky fiction novel, using any of those words!  My kids think I'm a dork because I refuse to decorate my home with creepy decor.  Instead, my Halloween decorations consist of happy harvest and smiling pumpkins.

Whether you like getting scared or not, have fun out there this year!  Wear a costume, share treats, create your own fun traditions, and be safe!   Happy Halloween!

Calling all serious authors

Once you've gone to all the trouble of writing a book…

It just makes sense to put in the little extra effort it takes to make it a bestseller. In fact…

It's almost ESSENTIAL for anyone hoping to turn their book, their message, into a solid income-producing career of coaching, public speaking, and further publishing success.

You see … a book, by itself, is not a business.

But when you can add “best-selling author” to your resume, you throw open the doors of possibility.

The trouble is:

Most authors have no clue how to do it!
But Peggy McColl sure does.

And on Monday, October 29th at 3pm ET you can join Peggy as she explains not only how to make YOUR book a bestseller (whether you’ve written it yet, or not) … but also how to use your new bestseller status as a springboard for spreading your message through speaking engagements, coaching programs, and more.

…and hopefully make a VERY comfortable living from it, too! (As she does.)

If you'd like to see how it's done, simply use the following link to visit the registration page. (Yes, you do need to register even though it's free because attendance is limited.)

You'll also find more details on this event there, too.

Trina

P.S. – This special online training event is for ALL authors who are serious about doing more than merely “write a book”. If you too would like to become a “bestselling author” and leverage that success into a full-blown, high-paying career…

Then this definitely is for you! Please act quickly so you won’t miss out – use the link below to register today:

Join us for Fall on the Ning—a free online writers conference sponsored by iWriteNetwork.

9:00 - Tristi Pinkston will walk you through some of the basic steps of editing your first draft—identifying and filling up holes, strengthening character motivations, and of course, those dreaded typos. Be prepared to take lots of notes, and have your first draft handy!

10:00 - Canda Mortensen will lead the discussion for the "Brush Strokes" class which will focus on 5 techniques by Harry Noden for improving the action, emotion, and style of sentences. Come prepared to rework and share sentences in your current work in progress. This type of revision works best with important scenes. Identify key sentences to rework during the class.

11:00 – Deanna Henderson will teach you to use Animoto, a program you can use to make short book trailers, create contest advertising, or just for fun. For our purposes, we’ll be making a book trailer, even if you aren't done with the book. Come with a few images downloaded to your computer that relate and that you want to use.

Be sure to sign up for the Ning at http://iwritenetworkning.ning.com/ ahead of time so you can join us for this fantastic event!

Plan your next travel adventure in honor of Columbus Day!

We know, it's not the biggest holiday in the United States,
lacking such things as beloved Columbus Day carols, festive decorations and
traditional meals to commemorate the day, but it is definitely worth
celebrating. The story of Christopher Columbus is inspiring, as that great
man's historic voyage teaches us to explore, search, and dream big.

We often discover new horizons while aiming for something
completely different. Christopher Columbus never did accomplish his original
goal - to find a western ocean route to Asia.
Instead, he achieved something even greater - he ushered in a new era in world
history by opening up the Americas to exploration.

Traveling around the world and going on vacation isn't as
expensive as you might think. Here at Workplace ESL Solutions, we love our international students
and we love to travel to their countries. Here are a few more ways to see the
world for less:

To vacation within driving distance, check out the "One Tank
Wonders" at www.tripadvisor.com/tankofgas To find the lowest price of gas
in your area, go to www.gasbuddy.com

The Internet has enabled us to become our own travel agents,
often offering better deals than if we called the hotel or rental
car company
directly. Some of my favorite web sites to find travel steals
and deals are: www.farecast.com
, www.yapta.com , www.travelocity.com , www.orbitz.com , www.breezenet.com , and www.hotwire.com

It’s easy to be influenced by a glossy brochure or fancy web
site that claims a certain hotel is the absolute best, but if you want to hear
what “real” people have to say about specific travel destinations, check out
their opinions posted at www.tripadvisor.com

Before purchasing, compare prices and do a "Google" search for
"discount code" with the name of the hotel chain, car company, airline, or
tourist attraction you specifically want. Joining the "frequent flyer" clubs or
hotel member clubs will often get you better rates, and those points you rack up
with each stay will get you free vacations in the future! Your credit card
might get you even more points, so find out which travel services they partner
with. AAA membership pays for itself
once you see all of the discounts you can get on hotels, cars, restaurants and even theme
parks.

A flexible traveler can really score big. For example, airlines
routinely over-book their seats, knowing that a certain percentage of travelers
will simply not show up for the flight.
If everyone does show up then there will be more passengers than seats so
the airline will then ask for volunteers who are willing to be bumped. By doing so they may offer you travel
vouchers for future flights,
meals, and even a paid hotel room if there isn’t another flight until the next
day. It’s a little bit of a hassle, but
if the airline is desperate they’ll keep sweetening the deal until someone says
yes!

Skip the tourist traps and save money by adding some volunteer
work at your destination! The following organizations offer meaningful service
opportunities and lower your destination costs during a “Volunteer
Vacation”:

www.americanhiking.org

www.greenpeople.org

www.charityguide.org

www.hospitalityclub.org

Swap a pricey hotel stay for a visit in someone else’s home
with a “Home Exchange” vacation:

www.homeexchange.com

www.homeaway.com

www.vacationhomerentals.com

www.vacationhomes.com

You can stay in a very inexpensive hostel and meet some
fascinating people: www.hostelworld.com

When you volunteer to drive one of those big RV’s one way it
helps the company return their vehicles and you save tons of moola: www.cruiseamerica.com

Traveling around the world might also inspire you to learn a
new language. That's
where WE come in! We
can help you learn Spanish or English and get you "travel ready" to communicate with the
world!

So, in honor of Columbus Day, dream big. Think big. Imagine
the impossible. See the world. And enjoy the journey!
